I just got home from picking up a "coctel de camaron" (shrimp cocktail) and as I was preparing to eat it I noticed a small piece of octopus in it. No big beal I understand a small piece must've got in it by accident, but as I continued to mix it I noticed more even bigger pieces of octopus on the bottom. If I had asked for a coctel de camaron y pulpo I wouldn't mind but that's not what I ordered and to be honest I'm kind of grossed out by the amount of octopus that came in my coctel. Located in a small shopping center off the 60 freeway, Mariscos El Rafa is a small quiet place. Great for having a beer and mariscos. The menu didn't not have a large selection of hot plates, but the ceviche de Cameron and aguachiles were good. We can't say the same about the oysters, they just didn't look fresh. Maybe it was the batch, but it was defiantly a no for me after having tried one. read more

The reason why I couldn't give them 5 stars is because the service could have been a lot better. We went around 7pm on a Thursday not busy at all but it took quite a while to get our food. They don't wear gloves and keep their rings on while handling raw seafood during a global pandemic. I asked a worker why they aren't wearing gloves and he said "the CDC says we don't have to wear gloves". I'm not dumb, I've worked at restaurants before and have my food handlers card and the number one rule is wearing gloves handling food. This is probably one of my top three GO TO place for ceviche y camarones (shrimp). It's a little pricy, but well worth it. Everything tasted fresh. The Micheladas are good. The service is quick. It was a bit expensive but it's understandable because it's mariscos. The following review is based on their customer service and my attempt to eat here: I had been wanting to try this place out for a month already since it's next to our favorite taco place. It was a hot Sunday so my cousins and I decided to head out have ourselves some fresh mariscos. I don't mind trying out 'holes in the wall' ( don't like to judge a restaurant by its cover) as long as the place is clean, service is friendly/professional and food is served in a timely manner. As we entered the restaurant it seemed cozy and clean, however it did feel a little warm due to the lack of a central air conditioner. They had a huge old A/C unit sitting on a table in the corner and my husband proceeded to plug in a portable fan standing by our table so that made it a little bearable. After the waitress had taken our drink order, I decided to forgive her curt attitude considering it was 5 in the afternoon and she was probably tired or had a long day. Plus she was cute and made some of us laugh (silently) when she said she had "one Squirt left". Well folks, Squirt was not the only thing she was running low on, apparently 'El Rafa' didn't go grocery shopping that day or didn't buy enough cuz she had run out of several things. After looking at the 1 page, 16 font size menu for about 10 minutes and having our drinks served, we were ready to order. Right before I told her my order, she decided to rudely interrupt me to and tell everyone at our table that any hot items in the menu were not available. Hmmm.... maybe not the best time to tell us considering she had already served us drinks, but forgivable since we were there for the cold fresh mariscos. So I decided to start my order with a dozen oysters and I was once again rudely interrupted and told the restaurant had none left. No sorry. No apologies. No sign on the window warning other customers. NO OYSTERS (which is a COLD food item if I may add). *Sigh*. When it was my cousin's turn to order for my 6 yr. old nephew (he hates seafood), at least she was 'considerate' enough to suggest the restaurant two doors down that sold hamburgers and allowed him to bring it back inside the restaurant. I settled for a shrimp cocktail and was left rather unsatisfied as she took the rest of the orders. Feeling hot and bothered by her lack of courtesy and the overall LACK of FOOD, and wanting to avoid further disappointment (aka food tasting nasty); we decided to cancel the order and take our business elsewhere! Will I be back and attempt again? Maybe not soon and certainly not in this hot weather. read more
