Food/price was good, portions were good, but the service was terrible. Took 27 minutes by the time we finished eating to get the bill. We were pretty much ignored by the waitress for forever and the busboy finally ended up bringing our bill. Would've taken 2 minutes to get us a bill and get us paid up. We had the mojarra frita , vuelve la vida seafood soup and micheladas. All very tasty and delicious. The tilapia was crispy , the seafood soup didn't taste "fishy", it was delicious and bonus had lots of carrots and celery and tomato, not just seafood. I'm picky w micheladas being diluted w beer so I asked for beer on the side. And it worked out , I had the perf miche. As we arrived there was just one table but restaurant became busy shortly. The service was great. I appreciate the attentiveness. You get 3 salsas and chips on the house , and those were a hard pass. We didn't like any of the 3 . One being creamy , made from sour cream?? My daughter and I were both in the mood for enchiladas. Mariscos La Playa did not disappoint! We were seated quickly. Almost immediately we were served chips and a trio of dips- pico, beans, and a third that I'm not sure what it was but it was delicious! The enchilada plates were overflowing. The chunks of beef in the beef enchilada were tender and flavorful. The rice was perfectly cooked and the beans were delicious as well. I've been here twice now and have yet to be disappointed! The coronarita margarita is so good, and so are the micheladas! The service was good, regardless of how packed the restaurant was. We go sat fairly quickly and only had to wait a few minutes for the bartender to make our drinks. I ordered the filete marinero and oh my gosh was it delicious! The fish was buttery and covered in shrimp, octopus, scallops and cheese. My boyfriend got the marlin tacos and the fish had so much flavor. We left stuffed and the prices weren't too expensive. We shared a mango margarita and I can not say enough good things about it. I had the marinero and will gladly order it again. The flavor was awesome and the portion was filling. Decided to try Mexican seafood in New Mexico. This place has mixed reviews but our experience was great. Started with house chips, the perfect kind and they came with a guacamole style salsa, pico de gallo, and bean dip. Shrimp and octopus cocktail (coctel campechana) and their Caldo Vuelvea la Vida "El Mejor" - "Come Back to Life" seafood soup with shrimp, octopus, scallops, clams, crab legs, and calamari. The seafood was perfectly cooked and tender. Fresh and tasty. We didn't get a crab leg or calamari but there were baby muscles and shrimp. Mariscos La Playa serves very authentic Mexican seafood in a very brightly colored and festive-looking setting. Despite the inland desert, small town location, the seafood is fresh and high quality. Even the raw oysters on the half shell, a dish you might wonder about this far from the ocean, taste fresh. I've spent a considerable amount of time traveling around Mexico, and I can attest that what they serve here is typical of what you'd get in Mexico, and nothing like the usual "Mexican" food you find in the US. I've been hunting for a restaurant that serves these dishes, and Mariscos La Playa is the only one I've found that captures that authentic Mexican flavor. I'm especially happy to have finally found a place that serves authentic Mexican-style Coctel de Camerón (shrimp cocktail). These delicious concoctions, consisting of shrimp, avocado, onions, cucumber, tomatoes, and cilantro in a clamato broth, are ubiquitous in Mexico, and I fell in love with them there. But they seem almost impossible to find in the US, where "shrimp cocktail" has degenerated into just a couple of shrimp with some cocktail sauce for dipping. The Coctel de Camerón at Mariscos is awesome, and comes in chico, grande and "Ballena" ("whale") sizes, the latter being nearly a meal in itself. They also offer mixed seafood and ceviche versions. Meals begin with the customary complimentary chips and salsa, but here they provide three types of salsa: a very spicy pico de gallo, an avocado-based salsa (not your typical guacamole, but something runnier, with jalapeños and other stuff, and very spicy), and a non-spicy bean dip. Though it varies from day to day, on some days the spice level on the first two can be very high, but they're all delicious. I find all the chilled appetizers and entrees particularly good, especially in the summer. These include the above mentioned cocktails, the tostadas de ceviche, and several seafood salads. Of the hot dishes, I particularly like the Fillete al la Veracruzana (tilapia filets in a Veracruz-style tomato-based sauce with peppers), and the Caldo de Pescado (Fish soup). The latter comes in small and large sizes, the "small" being a very large, almost meal-sized bowl with two generous filets of either red snapper (the better choice, in my opinion) or catfish, all in a light broth with vegetables. The location here in Española is similar to its sister restaurant in Santa Fe, although this is larger,newer, and nicer. I enjoy the garishly bright, tropical-looking undersea themed decor -- it's another authentic Mexican touch. This place is popular with the locals, so you're likely to be surrounded by conversations in Spanish, completing the south-of-the-border experience. Alcohol is limited to beer and wine, but they also offer a wine-based margarita, which is actually quite good. All in all, an excellent place for great seafood in a casual setting. I've been going to Marisco's since they were in their first location in Ranchito's. I've had a little bit of everything on the old menu and had 2 or 3 go to items. Surprise! They've made some changes to the restaurant in the last few months that have resulted in a smaller menu and a nearly perfect dining experience. My wife had the tacos al pastor, I had the discada fresca and they were flawless. It's hard to get good seafood in northern NM, but they've managed to deliver pulpo, calamari and scallops that are tender. It's good to see a restaurant strive to improve and innovate. I have always loved eating at Mariscos in Espanola, Me and my family go several times a month. However, today 9/20/22 my husband and I went to have lunch and after the waitress Amber sat us down she comes back and tells us that she has video proof of us ordering oysters and not paying. She said this loud and in front of other customers. she proceeded to tell us that we needed to pay for the oysters before we could order lunch. We proceeded tell her that it wasn't us and to please provide proof. She promptly told us she didn't have access to the cameras and the manager was out until "maybe Monday". We proceeded to press her for proof and to get the manager on the phone so we could settle this to no avail. She informed me that she knew it was us because she recognized us. I offered her proof that on this particular day we had eaten somewhere else and attempted to show her our debit card history. I also asked her why would I risk going back to a restaurant where I had just dined and dashed the week before she was rude and said "I don't know". She refused to entertain the notion that maybe she was mistaken. There was no way I was going to pay for a meal that number 1 I would never order because I don't like oysters and 2 not see the proof for myself!! I called the Santa Fe location and spoke to a really nice gentleman that called his manager for guidance. He promptly asked my name and number in the hopes that his manager could speak with the Espanola manager about this. We were embarrassed and couldn't believe this waitress. I guess that explains why we were literally the only people in the restaurant at noon on a Tuesday. Angelina's was packed as was el Paragua. We should have known by the empty parking lot. The employees stood around the cash register the entire time.... nobody brought us a check .... nobody asked if we liked our food. I love the under the sea theme. The chips and salsa is delicious. It's a pico de gallo with lots of jalepenos and I like the avocado salsa. It can also by quite spicy. The non-spicy bean dip is really good. I have only ordered 3 things here. I just can't try something new because I love what I normally get. I really like the shrimp kabobs.
