Everyone loves a diner. Market diner is exactly what you'd expect from one. Simple arrangement with a counter tables and booths and nothing super fancy. Now I've been here a few times but wasn't using yelp at the time so I'm writing my review solely on today's visit. Normally I'd have the daily special that rotates but this time I got a regular menu item. The one thing I've always noticed about this place. Is it's dark. Makes me feel like it's hiding dirt because of the scuffs on the floor and the off white drop ceiling tiles. It definitely needs more light. But we walked in and they told us to seat ourselves. Just keep it to a specific area. My guess to rotate clients to their wait staff. And our server was quick to come to the table for drinks. I say our server cause unlike most places. She didn't bother to tell us her name. Was friendly enough so maybe that just slipped her mind. Drinks came quick and we sat for a few minutes while she ran around to her other tables always saying she'd be right there to us as she zinged by. So it's nice to see someone paying attention to you even when they are super busy. The girl wanted breakfast I wanted lunch. So diners are always a good bet for that. I got a potato skins appetizer and ordered something called a triple cheese sandwich. She ordered a 2x2x2. Pancakes eggs and bacon. Now the skins were the star of the show today. They were massive. I was wondering why the menu said you only get 4. But think 2 russet baked potatoes cut in half and overflowing with cheese and bacon. They committed the error of a useless garnish with an entire plate of lettuce. But the skins were fantastic. My sandwich on the other hand. Was sort of meh. Big slices of Italian bread with a few slices of American cheese. I added the tomato and bacon that the menu said you could and they went over the top with how much you get for that extra few dollars. I just wish a triple cheese was three cheeses and not three slices. But for a inexpensive sandwich that was truly my only complaint. I tried a few bites of her breakfast food and it's what you'd expect. Egg beater scrambled eggs and pancakes probably from a premixed bag. Tasty and well cooked. But nothing to go crazy over. So I think the best way to sum this diner up. Standard, you get value for your money and good food. Just don't have 5 star expectations going in. And you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely go back to try and pry into their dessert case. But I never seem to have room in the end. read more

Stopped in with my wife for breakfast today. Waitress came right over as soon as i sat down. Great waitress, friendly, attentive. Placed our order. My wife ordered an omelette, i ordered the monte christo. Both came out in less than 10 minutes. Food was hot, very good. I took off 1 star for the male that cashed us out. I can find more personality in a house plant. He spouted to sign the receipt, i put out my hand for him to hand me the pen, he thru it on the counter and walked away. Not a thank you, stop back and see us or anything. I hold service just as high as cleanliness, quality. This guy failed miserably. Don't walk away from a customer without saying something. My bff went to get it for me & the ordered was never placed d/t some credit card machine issue. needless to say, I never got my food & got double charge $40.20 for food I never got. called the next day, was told they'd "check" with the acct..... I'm not really a 'traditional' breakfast person to begin with, so if I go out for breakfast I want it to be something crazy... sexual chocolate french toast, huevos rancheros, crab cake benedict, etc. If I'm looking for canned gravy and biscuits that's no further away than a trip to the grocery store, so I'm probably not a good judge of the offerings here to begin with. My experience with this diner was awful. My steak was over cooked. The turkey bacon was under cooked. They did not provide steak sauce or jelly as recommended. They also put pork bacon on my eggs. We don't eat pork! The cheese on the grits did not melt into the grits. It was like it's own thick layer of overly processed white cheese. We ended up throwing everything away. First of all for breakfast they don't have any meat options besides pork, not everyone eats swine. So I had to get a side of French toast and a full order of chicken tenders and fries. Let me back track. I ordered an Arnold Palmer to drink and it tasted like lemon water, clearly no one knows how to make sweet tea. The coffee was trash. Now back to the main course, the French toast was wet bread and they threw powdered sugar on top. The chicken had no flavor and the fries were okay, but all you have to do is throw those in the fryer. My friend had the steak which again was not seasoned AT ALL. I have to say that customer service was amazing. The server was polite and the woman at the register was delightful! The food was "okay" - the fries are delicious but the toast on the sandwich was burnt. Although not a big deal. Still good :) The reason i give a low ranking is that they allowed people to come with their dogs into a restaurant. It's unsanitary and these tiny creatures were at the table. I happened across this place years ago when in the area picking up my wife at the Amtrak Station in town. I can't say it left an overwhelming impression on me but apparently it did on the wife as she has wanted to return on for a couple trips to town now. Yesterday we had the time so off we went for breakfast. We arrived at about 12:15 so the Sunday breakfast was just ending and we were seated immediately. I ordered the Belgian Waffle with bacon and the wife a frittata. The wife liked her frittata. I can't really say the same for my meal. my waffle was not hot and I wasn't really fond of the bacon. Now as for the bacon, there are many different varieties and I think it was simply a matter of not liking the taste of whatever variety they use more than there being anything wrong with it. I mentioned the cold waffle to our waitress Danielle (who was wonderful, by the way) and she offered to warm it or have a new one made. I choose the former as I wanted to get on the road. It came back hot if a bit limp. But again, that was my choice. So we finish up and I'm at the register paying the owner. His wife comes over and mentions the waffle to him. She then mentions the warmed up one being soft. This surprised me as I never mentioned that to anyone other than my wife. I guess they were watching my reaction. In any case, as I said, it was my choice to have it heated rather than let them make a completely new one so I was really surprised when they took it off the bill. I have stopped by here a few times and have never been disappointed. The food is always good and the coffee keeps coming. It gets busy on Saturday mornings when the Regional Market is in full swing, but they accommodate you quite quickly and I have never had to wait to be seated or wait for my food very long. There is a guy there who is either the owner or manager I think. He is always hustling around making sure everything is running along and he pitches in anywhere and everywhere and is very friendly to the customers. I always tell everyone I know to go there and to order the pancakes because they are huge! As I say, "they are bigger than your face!" and yummy too! The scene is depressing, the oil is old in the fryers and everything tastes like fish Sticks or chicken fingers. The eggs were GRAY!?!?!? Besides the food being so gross we could not really eat it, everyone there seemed really sad. I mean VERY sad. I felt so bad for them. I came in on a Saturday afternoon because I had a hankering for some pancakes. The pancakes didn't disappoint. The eggs were good, I got them scrambled and they were liquid egg for sure rather than fresh but I prefer my scrambled eggs that way. The waitstaff was nice and prompt and the food while it didn't come out fast it didn't seem excessively long either. A remodel would do this place some good. Wow, after the way the Owner just treated me at the Market Diner on Park St. I will be telling everyone i know NOT to go their. He just called the cops on me for asking why my order was taking so long. I saw 4 GH drivers walk in and walk out with their food that arrived on the counter after I got there. I asked the Manger [owner] why I am still sitting here. He said "cant you see how busy we are?" I said "I've been here for 15 mins and she ordered over 45 mins ago are you trying to tell me it takes an hour to cook 2 pancakes 2 eggs and 2 pieces of toast?" He didnt even see if thenfood was cooking...just got mad at me and what made me lose my cool is when he said 'I pay for this service, your not even a customer." I said "are you serious, this is a customers order i am delivering, they paid top dollar and a delivery fee...he responded by telling me to get out or he was calling the Cops...i waited to hear 911 report the call on my scanner and then i left and called DD support. My wife and I were driving back home to Glens Falls after a couple days in Niagara Falls and wanted some comfort food on our last meal of the trip to fortify us for the last leg of a 6 hour drive. Shutting off the GPS, we drove into Syracuse and stumbled onto The Market Diner. The service was terrific and welcoming, and the food was delicious and exactly what we were looking for. I got chopped steak with mushrooms and onions, a massive slab of chopped steak that was challenging to finish, but I made it. My wife got chicken cordon bleu, which I stole a bite of, and it was excellent as well. Both entrees came with mashed potatoes and gravy, exactly the comfort food flavor we were craving, as well as fresh vegetables (peas for me, corn for my wife). If not for a box of Timbits waiting in the car, we would have tried the homemade desserts displayed in the cooler in the dining room, they looked great. The only negative, and it's minor, is the decor is just a touch dated. Not retro, just old. Could use a minor makeover. But the food and service were top notch, and if you're in Syracuse and you're hungry, you'll leave The Market Diner happy and stuffed. read more

Lot's of pluses for this local favorite... First it is super reasonable - especially with a Groupon! Second - it's quality diner fare. Good food, GREAT price, GREAT and friendly service. Good sized portions served pretty quickly. Myself and my 3 teens cost about 40 bucks (before the Groupon). Third - it's right across the street from Dynasty USA. You don't have to eat at the crappy food court or be priced gouged at a chain. After walking all day, go across the street to Park Ave and have a decent dinner or late breakfast. My family stopped in during a trip to Destiny USA for what we hoped would be good ole fashion diner food. I was glad we did as our experience was excellent all around. From the friendly wait staff, huge yummy food, a table visit from the owner and cool atmosphere directly next to the regional market, we were fueled up for the day. The menu is extensive with breakfast, lunch and dinner selections. We ordered French toast and pancakes and were shocked by how delicious and the large the meal was. Had a quick & decent meal here while we were in the area. I had a swiss & mushroom burger that was quite good; the meat was not dry at all, and the cheese was nice and melty, though the mushrooms had a touch too much grease. I got the impression that there is a big grill in the back where all foods get cooked and leftover food bits accumulate: I found a speck of green leafy stuff in my food, nothing too alarming but could be bothersome if you're picky about that kind of thing. I got the sweet potato waffle fries with it, which were delicious, crunchy, and sweet potato-ey. Service was very fast and we were out of there in no time. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and they nearly ruined it. After waiting in the doorway for 10 minutes without being acknowledged by anyone, including the woman at the cash register right next to us (!!), I noticed a sign that said please seat yourself. We go to sit at a table and were immediately yelled at by a man (who's wife was apparently at the register) telling us we can't sit there and asked if his wife sent us over there. We said no, no one had spoken to us or even acknowledged our presence, and the sign says seat yourself. What's the problem? He could have simply explained why we couldn't sit there rather than yelling at us. And if you don't want people seating themselves, don't put up a sign saying it's okay! They might have saved it when they walked us over to another table after we almost left right after being yelled at, but not so much. The waitress forgot my orange juice and we had at least 3 waitresses and 1 waiter in the 30 minutes we were there. The icing on the cake was watching everyone who arrived after us seat themselves after we had been yelled at for it. I've never in my life not tipped at a restaurant. This was the first time.
