Visited here this past weekend for the first time in many years. Service was pleasant and efficient and the facility was clean - those were really the only good points. My home fries tasted old, soft and reheated. I asked for them with onions - they sprinkled raw minced onion on the top - like the kind you put on a hot dog from a street cart. They asked my GF if she wanted brown sugar on her grits (huh?!). The cheese omelet had oil on the surface, very little cheese, and the link sausage was blackened and dry. The waitress agreed that the sausage looked suspect, but the replacement links she brought were not cooked enough and were nearly flavorless. The ham on my Eggs Benedict was nearly paper thin and was overcooked. Even the toast was blah. Apart from "okay" grits and the eggs on my Eggs Benedict being cooked properly, it's one of the worst meals I've ever had in a diner. For a 12 oz glass of OJ (from concentrate), Eggs Benedict with home fries, and a cheese omelet with grits and toast - total damage of $16.30 not including tax or tip. Canned mushrooms, really? the onions & peppers were not fresh, they were pulled out of the vat, so they were over cooked and not what I expected. My dining partner had french toast, and when reading the menu saw that there was an extra charge for cinnamon, which to me was a bit over the top of nickle and dime. in addition, our table was dirty, although they put silverware on it, as if it were clean, we waited almost 10 minutes to get a waitress, and they weren't slammed, and we also had to track her down for our check. Great service, they are very quick despite being busy. The waitressing staff is comprised of very sweet ladies that call you honey and sugar. It has almost an old diner/dive bar feel to it and is a great atmosphere. The food is good but standard diner food. Steak and eggs is excellent. read more

My husband and I enjoy diners and after visiting some relatives we found Market. We loved it. We are from New York City and New Jersey( the garden state) we call it the diner state. This diner was the best, not fancy but a typical diner look with great food. My husband had a flame broiled hamburger and sweet potato fries. You can't get flame broiled everywhere and the sweet potatoes were delicious. They were homemade not frozen- crispy outside so soft inside. I had an omelet with ham, onions and peppers that was perfectly made and so tasty. The people that give this place a low rating don't know good homemade food. Absolutely awful! I came here with guests visiting Syracuse. There were four of us, and not one person enjoyed their food. My pumpkin pancakes had no flavor to speak of. Even the bacon was flavorless. Messing up bacon is a pretty tough thing to do, but somehow Market diner manage to succeed. I was so embarrassed to have suggested this place to my guests, that I apologized over and over throughout the day. I will not be back under any circumstances. Great local spot! Perfect for breakfast or lunch while you're at the farmer's market on Saturday! We got cheddar burgers which were juicy and delicious. The burger roll was fresh and very good. Best diner in 'Cuse! Come here every time I come home! I like that you can pick your own seat. Coffee is a never ending flow and always hot. Food comes out literally in 5 min and is also HOT. If you like a real hometown, welcoming place to eat, you can't beat the Market Diner. They're easy to find at the regional market just off I-81 in Syracuse, and it's always worth a drive. All the food is good or better and the portions are usually more than you expect. We went in for breakfast after my sons procedure. The waitress was extremely rude. They Brang me out undone eggs that were very slimy and put egg slime all over the rest of my meal. I sent it back and they actually scraped the eggs off and put new ones that were not done on the plate. Then preceded to lie about it and be extremely rude. We will never go there again. read more

My routine on Saturday is breakfast at The Market Diner and then shopping at the farmers market. I usually order a ham, cheese and onion omelette and I have no complaints. The onions are cooked, not raw, thankfully. The home fries are usually fresh... I've had a batch a couple times and didn't get the impression they were made that morning, but it happens. I now order them crispy and that seems to be the trick. Besides the eggs Benedict which was alright and just eggs and toast I haven't had much else there but go and enjoy it when I do. The waitresses and staff are friendly, there's never really a wait or a long one especially considering how packed they are on the weekends and the prices are reasonable. Obviously it is not a culinary experience because it's a diner... And they are certainly better than others in Syracuse. read more

i've got to second much of what owen wrote, below. ate there for the first time last saturday and it was terrible. on first glance everything looks fine - service was efficient and very friendly and had the typical diner-ish look about it. all ok. they had pumpkin pancakes on the menu, sounded good, so that's what i ordered. my husband hadn't noticed it on the menu and he was intrigued also, so he ordered them along with sausage links. i've never been clear how one can mess up breakfast but, man, they did. we both took our first bite of the pancakes at the same time and looked up together, kinda horrified. the best way to describe? sour. really sour. we flagged our waitress, she apologized, and we reordered - this time omelet for husband, scrambled eggs (dry) for me. long and short? they also tasted sketchy. bizarre. we left having eaten nothing, waitress was again apologetic but nothing was taken off the tab. full price with apologies and empty stomach. ick. never again. read more

Burgers and cold sandwiches are very good. But don't get the fish. It was the worst I had ever had. My mother didn't eat hers and my husband didn't either. To their credit, they took two meals off the check. They explained that the fish is breaded in the morning and then frozen. So that explains why it's so bad and flavorless. Also, some people like coated fries. I hate them. But that's the kind they have. The waitresses are friendly and accommodating. The bacon cheddar burger is one of the best I ever had. Waitress acted upset that my daughters wanted to make changes to the burger, no pickles, etc. One item we were looking for wasn't on the menu I asked did they have it and she said yes but it's not listed, when my daughter asked for different add on items she acted as if she should've known what it came with, yet it wasn't listed. Our food was brought out and she never revisited the table to ask did we need anything, never asked did we want a refill on our drinks, didn't check on us in anyway after bringing food. I felt like she may have thought we weren't going to tip because of all the questions we had. I still tipped her 18% even though she didn't deserve it. I told my daughters she may have been having a bad day, and we would just choose a different diner next time. Seemed like a nice place when we came in, lots of customers and friendly staff. Food coming out looked appealing. We ordered coffee and placed our order. We sat behind a coffee station and were horrified to see a cockroach come crawling out from under a central coffee urn. We notified our waitress and she was distressed. They cleaned under the machine after that. Hard to feel the same about the strawberry waffle that came out minutes later. I have always came here for breakfast and it's been good. Today, I came for lunch. I'll stick with breakfast. The food portion is that of a child. I am not saying I need a heaping portion of food but c'mon. I ordered a triple cheese grilled cheese and fries. My grilled cheese had one type of cheese or processed cheese that is, on very small white bread with a handful of fries. For $7 I would expect something a bit more. We went here on a whim... A whim that we should have not acted on. We visited on a Sunday, it seemed quite busy. Which was promising. We grabbed a booth and placed our orders. That's when things went down hill. Our son could not get his napkin off the table as the table was sticky. So I starred wiping the table down with a hand wipe. The wipe turned dark grey within a few swipes. GROSS. It took me 5 wipes to get through the initial layer is stickiness on the table. Then we noticed the ants that were crawling on the window ledge. Again, GROSS. We were contemplating leaving, but the waiter came with our food. So we "ate". No one ate much, we paid our bill and left. After watching the goings on in the establish, and seeing the people busing tables and simply wiping them down with a dirty cloth, it is no wonder everything is sticky and they have ants. Once again I stopped by the Market diner with the family dropping off my son at Syracuse university. The activity around the diner was large because of the market that was open and the Syracuse state fair was open. We went in and sat right away. The waitress came right over and took our order for the 3 of us. We had eggs ham coffee and toast. I mentioned to the waitress about my coming the last time and had a great breakfast with the family. I asked if I could say hello to the owner to let him know my experience. The waitress said he was right at the register and she would mention it to him. After our awesome breakfast Tony came right over and thanked us for coming back. Probably for the last time. My family hasn't been there in nearly two years; figured we'd give them another shot. The waitress was rude, stressed and snappy at us. Don't know what we did other than sit down and wait for menus. I understand they're busy but after five full minutes of her going by us, she stops by and asks what we'd like, I asked for menus, told her we'd been there 5 minutes (can't decide without it what to order right?)She snidely remarked that "we have been busy" or something to that effect. That set the whole mood bad from there. Complained to the manager later on the way out, service sucked, so did the ordering. I refused to place an order other than coffee after the waitress replied to my daughter about ordering a milkshake, she replied that she was really too busy and didn't have time essentially. She was very sharp tongued and rude. WTF? what happened to the respectful service. I just wanted to have Brunch, not attitude from a (*&^%. Re think going to Market Diner at regional market guys, especially on Sundays. Not worth it. Time for MARKET DINER TO CLOSE or have Restaurant Impossible fix them up. Two years ago they wouldn't honor the coupons featured in the Enjoy The City book that they had featured in there on Sunday. Based on one visit: Server was attentive and courteous. The food was very good. Prices very reasonable. Bathrooms clean. The only negative was the bad coffee. I ordered the chicken gyro with French fries. The pita and vegetables were fresh, the chicken was tender and the tzatziki sauce was very good. The French fries were lightly battered, and normally I'm not a fan ( I wouldn't have ordered them had I known they were battered), but these fries were very good and perfectly crisp. My husband ordered the chicken Philly with sweet potato waffle fries. The chicken was nicely seasoned and over all good, but we both would have enjoyed it much more if the inside and outside of the Italian hoagie/sub roll had been toasted. The sweet potato fries were great. We sat outside, which was nice despite the seating area being located near a busy street. I would definitely return, maybe next time for breakfast. read more
