The right amount of Philly "dirt." Shappy has found a way to perfectly replicate this here in LA. I ordered online and picked up my order at Canter's Deli (shame on you Shappy... I walked out of there with a black and white too!) The initial order of 6 won't last very long, and then I'll be back for more!

I understand that Shappy's is not Canter's where the pickup was for that day. But I had a bad experience with my pickup. The people working at Canter's were incredibly rude and kept bouncing me from one counter to the other. Please note: these counters are across from each other and it seemed like the employees had some kind of interpersonal conflict. They were rude to each other, to me. I finally went the host to get help and he brushed me off and said I couldn't pick up here. Fortunately, one woman came out from the back, a server, and she got my order for me. Of course, she was immediately reprimanded for helping me. I would definitely go again to Shappy's if the pickup was anywhere else. Update: Shappy's reached out to me about my above issue within 30 minutes of posting and they took the time to talk and make things right. That's customer service right there! I will put up with Canter's to support Shappy! GO BIRDS!

We decided to stop in after our session at Rock Steady Boxing for lunch, great decor both outside and inside, fairly quiet for a late lunch crowd but our server covered the entire floor. We wanted to try what I saw on the social media feed and our server pointed out which one it was. A mixed platter of house smoked brisket, sausage, pulled pork, chicken legs and wings, and ribs. Slices of white bread, Cole slaw, sliced onions and pickles. A trio of BBQ sauces and then a side of cowboy beans and tallow tater tots. And plenty of it, we had a filling lunch and had enough to take home for dinner all from a shared entree. If you want delicious local BBQ and a variety of craft beers this is your place. Well done Pedals & Pints I will be back for more and that Banana Pudding! Mangiamo!

We were daunted by the 1.5 hr drive to where we were staying and hoped that eating closer would save some time later. It did! Rasselbock is a bit hidden away but we found it with street metered parking nearby. We had arranged for a reservation but we hardly needed it. The place was mostly empty when we arrived. Music was thumping, and not German music. It was classic rock but a touch too loud. So keep that in mind. I appreciated that they had Erdinger beer. That's some of the best beer around. I chose the non alcoholic since I had a drive ahead. I was told it might not be cold enough and the server brought me the bottle to sample it by touch. I cheerfully noted Germans don't drink very cold beer and it was fine. My wife and I ordered schnitzels, she chicken and I pork. She had the Oma's potato salad - which with mustard and mayo really would not have passed muster with a real Oma like mine. She reported it was good anyway. I had spaetzle and cucumber dill salad. The kids both had a bratwurst, salad and fries. On the whole the schnitzels were good. Not entirely authentic but USA-good enough. I'd say the same for my spaetzle and salad. One kid liked the bratwurst, one didn't. I found what I tried of the sausage to be pretty good. The stone ground mustard was particularly good. Service was a little slow to start but the food came quickly and we were off. A 4.2 rounds to a flat 4. German food is hard to come by anywhere, so I welcome it. Especially with a good selection of beer. They serve multiple sizes included a liter "mass." Sounds great but I think those days are behind me. Definitely worth a try.

The place has several different seating areas, which gives it a relaxed and flexible atmosphere depending on where you prefer to sit. The pizza was surprisingly very good. I tried the Hawaiian pizza, which was flavorful, and the bread itself was delicious. Overall, it's a nice spot if you're looking for a place to grab a drink and enjoy a casual bite to eat.

The beer was pretty good, I had a couple of different varieties and they were all very tasty. The letdown was the pizza, I was kind of expecting close to the quality of Fluid State but nope, not even in the same league. It was actually bad, the crust kinda reminded me of when the kids were little and we took them to Chuck E Cheese. Regardless, the beer was good and even though it was packed Saturday night, we didn't have any issues finding a table.

The layout is one of the best parts of the place. It's incredibly open with plenty of seating inside, and the outdoor patio with live music is a huge plus. It never felt cramped, even when it started getting busy, and it's getting harder to find places that are designed this well for hanging out. What surprised me most was the wine list. I expected maybe a couple of basic options, but they actually have a solid selection featuring some well-respected Santa Barbara producers. It wasn't just the standard Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc either. There was enough variety that I had no problem finding something I genuinely enjoyed. Ordering through the QR code at the table was easy, and our drinks came out surprisingly fast, even during a busy rush. The system seemed to work really well. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back. The crowd isn't exactly my personal vibe, but that's completely subjective and didn't take away from the experience. If you're a wine drinker who's hesitant about going to a brewery, don't write this place off. There's a good chance you'll be pleasantly surprised too.
