New on my radar neighborhood self-serve frozen yogurt that makes so me happy that I've gone 3 days in a row! I've always subscribed to the "but Paciugo is right up the street, why even bother?" philosophy until it got hot and I was really craving a tart original California flavor froyo with fresh fruit toppings and rainbow sprinkles. Yogurt Square has plenty of flavors. Lots of sweet dessert-inspired ones like cake batter, red velvet, fudge brownie, cheesecake, toasted mashmallow, etc. They also always have 2 sorbets at the same station, so you can swirl them, and the original tart. The watermelon sorbet they've had the past few days is ridiculously refreshing. The toppings bar is plentiful. Chocolate wafer straws, Nilla wafers, lots of candy, chocolate, crunchies, popping boba (!), fresh fruit, nuts, sprinkles, liquid toppings in squeeze bottles, and whipped cream too. The only downside is that I usually end up making an $8 cup, which may not be too wallet friendly if I keep going every day. They also give you neat little cup dividers that don't weigh anything, if you don't want your froyo flavors to touch. AND they have waffle bowls available - WHAT?! Be prepared for a buttload of indecisive and slow people if you go on weekends (I am a self-serve froyo speed queen). I tried the Chocolate, Cake Batter, and Peanut Butter and the PB was the only one with any detectable flavor. Second, the decor -- hideous fluorescents and day-glo colors. Cold metal seats. A giant flat screen tv showing fish? I even hate their name. Couldn't they come up with something better than "Yogurt SQUARE"? Really? And good god I hate their sign. I have to walk past that every day, multiple times, and it is really ugly. Third, the price. We paid $12 for 2 cups of tasteless air. Maybe you should offer a smaller cup size other than "giant" so people have an option. Just go to Paciugo. So my boyfriend and I have been anticipating this arrival to the Lincoln Square neighborhood. We saw it as we were going to Coldstone Creamery and we peered through the windows of the soon to be opened Yogurt Square. We saw it coming. Since then, we have fallen completely in love with Frozen Yogurt, and each other (awww how cute). So we walk in an hour before closing and apparently Yogurt Square is the place to be! It was definitely occupied full of Frozen Yogurt lovers, like me and my boyfriend. The place is decorated with bright colors and the tiled green wall read, "yogurt Square" welcomed us in. There are different self serve stations and a separate station with an assortment of toppings. The frozen yogurt options I got was Red Velvet, Dutch Chocolate, and Cookies and cream. So a word to the wise, be careful because you can easy over fill your cup, which I always make the mistake of doing. You are paying per ounce and it can get pretty costly if not controlled. So yeah I did a tiny helping of red velvet, a touch of Dutch Chocolate, and a dab of cookies and cream. Toppings is were you got to watch out. The topping station has an assortment of self serve topping options, Ground up oreos, gummy bears, ground up Captain Crunch, ground up frosted flakes, Ground Butterfingers, Chocolate sprinkles, regular sprinkles, toffee, whipped cream, fudge sauce, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, NEED I GO ON? So at the end of your frozen yogurt creation, you weigh your cup on a scale and pay per ounce. Its like .45 cents (give or take). Have a seat or walk around the Lincoln Square neighborhood. Cons: Took MONTHS to open. Now Hiring sign asked for photos of candidates. Creepy and unnecessary. Awful interior decor (bright fluorescent lights, a flat screen merely showing a fish scene? Cartoon vinyl scenes on the lower half of the wall of windows. No music playing (maybe that's a good thing). No hours anywhere when they opened (hours sign went up a few days later). Promo flyers that highlight a website that isn't built yet. The sign out front is terrible (generic font, not even level- different design than the sign inside.) A coffee setup worthy of the finest gas station in town. Awful name, etc... A lot of my cons are definitely subjective, and that's fine. You may argue that only their product or service or price matter, and that's fair as well. But I think the entire experience of a place matters, and when you look at everything about this place, it could be so much better. read more

Get a lid and pay for it or eat it there. I did try 2 more Cookie & Cream, Thin Mint Cookies flavor's. It was what I wanted and I kept the spoon to use every day in my coffee or to eat with. It's essentially getting three stars for offering delicious frozen yogurt. It's not getting the remaining two stars because the decor of the store is LEGITIMATELY depressing. The staff were friendly enough, but whenever I find myself under such harsh florescent lighting I feel like I'm in a jail, or a hospital, or some other equally disheartening environment. I kept thinking of ANY other fro-yo establishment and how much more welcoming the all appeared. Luckily Lincoln Square is full of outdoor places to sit and enjoy a cold treat. Unfortunately the unnaturally warm weather hasn't quite extended to the evening hours, thereby making the outdoors options a little less appealing. Since I find myself in the area often (due to my favorite used bookstore in the city) I will probably stop in again during summer months, but I will most certainly NOT be enjoying my yogurt in-store. read more

At the risk of sounding like a fro-yo ho, I will say that I'm happy to have a self-serve spot close to home, regardless of which brand it is. (Forever Yogurt, you'll get some lovin' as soon as you open in Andersonville, too). If the product is good and the price is reasonable, I will purchase a frozen yogurt cup from just about anyone. I've even tried the sad-sack Yogurt Avenue on Clark. Does that make me a bad girl? On my first visit to YS, I had a couple scoops (swirls? turns of the cup?) of pecan praline and a scooch of dulce de leche, after sampling both. They were both good, with the pecan praline declaring victory. I was also tempted by the fruity options of peach mango and a ginger lemonade sorbet, so hopefully those are still around when I come back. Which will be soon, no doubt. The shop itself is nothing exceptional and kind of rips off the Forever Yogurt CTA tie-in, but at least they picked the right shop to copy. There is a poster near the back listing the health benefits of yogurt, and although I am generally in favor of yogurt, these claims are a little dubious (yogurt clears up acne and freshens breath? really?). Let's just say they have not been evaluated by the FDA. One area for improvement would be having both cash registers operating when the line is more than a couple people long, just because waiting while holding some frozen goodness leads to less-frozen goodness. Plus some less scrupulous types can't help themselves and start nibbling on their treats while in line (I sawl it! I sawl it!). Every ounce counts, especially when they are $.45, amiright? The outside seating is pretty sweet, though the trash receptacle is industrial-grade and requires a lid to be lifted which is a little icky. But it's a largish area under shade with plenty of seating, so it's otherwise pretty nice. It also affords a view of the LSAC, so you can watch the exercisers while you relax, eat your treat and try not to feel guilty. I'll be back. read more

I like the place just fine. We visit once or twice a week and I prefer tangy original..sometimes with fresh fruits. The fruits offered are expensive types at a grocery- diced mango and kiwi, blackberries and blueberries and fresh diced strawberries. I also like the little juice filled caviars for a treat or to add sweet. People are ribbing on the decor...it's not fine dining geez... It's a yogurt place in a family oriented neighborhood. This spot definitely caters to families so don't expect mellow coffeehouse colors and dim lighting. Starbucks is down the street if you want coffee (this place is self serve so expect nothing more from the coffee) and a neutral color palette to tap on your laptop. This is a new self-serve yogurt place in the square. The frozen yogurt itself is amazing yet the topping station was somewhat amateurish. It was obvious that they went to the Jewel and are reselling their toppings. Also, they were reselling Jewel brand bottled water in their cooler. I might be mistaken, but isn't that illegal? It can get pricey by adding toppings since you are paying by the ounce. Did I say the actual frozen yogurt was amazing? They had a nice patio for people-watching during Maifest. I am solidly in the middle with yogurt square. While I was about to go to the square roots festival, I did want to hit up some place in the area beforehand. I liked that there was a good amount of choices. The range was pretty good as well going from sweet to classic flavors. I do have a problem with there only being one size for the cups. Yes, the self-serve nature of it would allow me to choose how much I put in, but some size choices would really be nice. I decided on getting cookies n cream along with dutch chocolate. The cookies n cream part was pretty good, but the dutch chocolate was a little disappointing. It was decent, but not close to being really good. The interior is a bit spazzy for me. It seems like it's trying to be sleek modern or even futuristic. Instead, I sat on the outside patio. Even the chair outside were a bit uncomfortable. Yogurt Square is solid and the location helps it a lot. It's not out of the way, so a return could well happen, but I won't be rushing back just yet. read more

Started stopping by here with wifey during our usual weekend visits to lincoln square after lunch. The place is nice and clean. It can get pretty busy at times, it comes in waves. The place has about 10 different flavors of frozen yogurt and its fat free. You start off at the back of the line and you fill up a cup or waffle cup of your favorite yogurt. you can even put a little handy dandy divider in your cup to try more than one. At the end of the line you have about 20 different toppings and cookies etc. You end with paying for your yogurt by weight, so the more you add the more you pay for. Its delicious. So far I've only had a few flavors but they've been excellent. So far my fav's have been pink lemonade and birthday cake! you should def. stop on in there its simple, its good and it makes great dessert after lunch! Do it! read more

Stopped in here last night on their second day open. I was excited to try Yogurt Square, as it lies directly on the path from my house to my yoga studio (potentially dangerous). Anyway, the yogurt was ok... the machines are fancy and newer than a lot of the other froyo stand-bys but the flavor options (mostly fruity) were lacking, as were the topping options. Also, their coffee station is clearly modeled after a 7-11 or something; they have that cappucino machine that you see in every gas station everywhere (push a button, get a cup of something that resembles cappucino). Prices (.45 per ounce) is comparable with any other froyo place. The ambiance is unpleasant; extremely bright fluorescent lights and many signs that look like they were craft projects from the local elementary school. Anyway, it's only their second day open so I'll probably give them another shot at some point in the future. Until then, forever yogurt will still occupy that special place in my heart dedicated to the love of froyo. read more

I'm more of a Pachugo person, but this place is okay. I neither really love or dislike this place. Also agree with the other reviewers that this place is just a-okay, but I wouldn't say as good as Forever Yogurt. I'd say it's more like about as good as Berrymoon at Golf Mill with slightly fewer toppings(unfortunately), and not a destination place for me. But it's fine, if I happen to be around there, and by some chance I don't want gelato(not often, but it happens), it works. Honestly after the renovation happened, it seems like the interior barely changed at all, and is still kinda eh on how it looks. But I can overlook that, since they do have a patio for warmer months, and there are a lot of other benches and outdoor places to sit north of here on Lincoln in warmer months. Or of course, one could walk south to Welles Park. Their bathroom was at least maintained and clean, on my last visit this past summer. My favorite was the raspberry- tasted delicious and fruity. We topped it all with chocolate chips, mango, strawberries, and blueberries. My wife and I stumbled upon this place last week. It is two doors down from a Coldstone and considerably better. There are 12 different self serve flavors ranging from plain and vanilla to dutch chocolate, snickerdoodle, cookies and cream, strawberry/pomegranate, and blueberry/acai. Another plus is that every two that are paired together can be served in a twist with the middle lever. It can, however, be a little dangerous because it is self serve/pay by the ounce and they give you a big 16oz container to fill. So be careful there because before you know it you'll have 1 lb of fro-yo with no room for toppings :) There are candy toppings (the usual suspects: gummy bears, crushed candy bars, etc) and fruit toppings (cherries, kiwi, mango, coconut, etc). The fruit was all fresh and of good/high quality. Pros: -Tons of delicious flavors (I'm a fruit flavor guy and the peach/mango was fabulous. My wife likes the chocolaty flavors and really loved the peanut butter!) - Toppings were fresh - People behind the counter were friendly and nice - Not too expensive ($0.45 an ounce isn't bad. Our combined cups usually come out to roughly 16 oz) Cons: - Not a ton of seating - Wife really loved the peanut butter, but they haven't had it since the first time she tried it (I know not really a con, but maybe they'll put some peanut butter flavor back in ;) ) I'm not a fro-yo pro by any means (I haven't been to one since TCBY was big in the 80s) but I really liked this place. Yogurt Square is a pretty standard self serve frozen yogurt place. You grab a cup, choose your flavor or flavors, fill your cup with as much as you want, add toppings, weigh your cup, and then pay. They charge by the ounce, and it can get pretty expensive if you aren't paying attention to how much you are adding to your cup. It can be tricky to navigate around the screaming children and people who can't seem to figure out how things work, but it is still fairly easy to get in and out quickly. I usually take my treat to go (I like to eat while I walk), but I do sometimes take advantage of their outdoor seating when the weather is especially nice. They have nice selection of basic flavors ranging from tart original to the standard flavors (chocolate, vanilla, cake batter) to fruit flavors like coconut, banana, and watermelon. I do appreciate that they have the nutrition information displayed for every flavor. And I love the little dividers they have that you can add to your cup if want multiple flavors, but don't want them to touch. They also have a decent selection of toppings (fruit, candy, sprinkles - pretty much everything you expect to find at a frozen yogurt place), but it seems that those aren't always refilled, as there are times when I've been in and the strawberry container is empty. So no, there isn't anything special about Yogurt Square, but a cup of frozen yogurt sure hits the spot when you are craving a sweet treat. Just a word of warning - customer service doesn't exist here. You will not be greeted when you enter. Don't bother asking any questions, because you won't get any answers. The staff also doesn't seem to clean very often or restock empty toppings in a timely fashion. Oh, and one of the staff members gets a little unpleasant if you don't tip and likes to point out the fact that they have a tip jar. Yes, I see the tip jar. Gimmie some yogurt, fool, and get out the way!!! Feeling overwhelmed by the options? I feel your pain... You don't want to go in there guns blazing and commit to a yogurt just like that. This is a big decision here. Narrow it down by 3-4 and grab a sample cup from the register and whittle away the frozen four from there. I usually do a half and half, not the swirl, that's amateur hour. You lose the individual personality of the yo' yo. But tread softly and take it easy on the lever, cause you could be lookin at $5.00 without even hitting the toppings bar. And no one ever got rich eating $10.00 frozen yogurt. I like that the flavors change and there are some traditional flavors and fruit flavors so a yogurt connoisseur can mix things up. Now the toppings. Topp-ings! Topp-ings! Topp-ings!! I hit the chocolate covered mallows hard. Load em up, they're light, and the deliciousness to weight ratio is off the charts, so it makes good fiscal sense to go for the gusto here. There are also tons of different pulverized candies and cookies to choose from along with cut up fruit. The fruit is always fresh and I have never seen them run out of anything. Then mosey over to sprinkle and sauce city. My cup is usually overflowing at this point, so I usually skip it. Also convenient like whhhhhatttttt. Right off the brown line and smack dab in the left ventricle of Lincoln Squizzle. Its no wonder cold stone is gone. The only beef I have is that the store is small and there is not much room to get your yogurt on when there is a rush and people eating inside. But I'll live and you'll live. You get a big cup, fill it yourself, and pay by weight -- it would be easy to buy a whole lot of fro-yo if you really wanted to (or if you're not paying attention) but it's also nice to be able to control your portion size. The woman behind the counter was friendly. I sampled red velvet, but ended up getting chocolate and peanut butter. All three flavors were delicious and I want to go back when I'm in a frutier mood to try some of the others. It seemed like there was a good assortment of toppings, including a decent assortment of fresh fruit. I believe they also have wifi (saw the network name & password posted.)
