Absolutely stellar food This place has been a personal favorite of mine for over a decade. No other pastie shop I've ever been to has come close to food quality and taste as marshals pasties. Tips: The first thing you should do is read the other reviews. I don't want to reiterate something that has already been said, aside from the quality of the food and service I had. Second, have a plan, know just what you want. Large/Small, Cornish Pasties--Hot, Cold, or frozen. Some history of the Cornish Pasties: Associated with Cornwall in Great Britain, hence the name "Cornish Pasties". Also known is this was a staple for miners, because it was easy to carry and handle while on the job. Actually the exact origins are unclear, one of the early references was in the 13 century, (1207-1272), in the town of Great Yarmouth. One more note then on to my world famous reviews, (just kidding). In the Cornwall mines, the Pasties were associated with "Knockers", said to be spirits knocking on the mine walls to indicate rich veins of ore, or a warning of an impending tunnel collapse. The miners would leave a small part of the pasty in the mine to be on the good side of the spirits. So what does this tell us? ALWAYS SHARE YOUR PASTIES! I was just walking by and saw this little shop that is about as wide as a typical bathroom is long. But it looks so genuine I had to stop and check it out. After all my Yelp friends rated this 5 STARS! I had no idea what or how to order a pasties--note how to pronounce this gem, this is not a donut. One lady as I was coming in had 2 dozen in boxes heading to Lake Tahoe. Another lady at the counter was there waiting for her order, so I asked how does all of this work. She gave me the run-down, and also told me when she was just a little girl she went to elementary school just right down the street and behind the school they were allowed to go to another local pasties shop to get some for lunch. She also told me, she does not live in Grass Valley any longer, but always comes back to get a dozen or two for the freezer back home and one hot pasties for her driving trip. Very Cool Stuff! I ordered small beef and sausage pasties, paid my $4.45 for one and quickly headed for my truck to try one. Mmmmmmm OMG.. good! Fresh, not overly seasoned, and perfect for 1 hand driving/eating on the go. (This is not a recommendation) All I can say is you must try it to understand how good they are. The service was wonderful, the lady at the counter has been working there for many years and told me of some of the history of Marshall's Pasties. In that location alone, 43 years! One of the oldest businesses in Grass Valley, and still getting 5 Stars.... Amazing! This is a keeper--on my Local Flair list! read more

When we moved to Grass Valley everyone told me "you''ll enjoy our pasties. They're a tradition." This was usually right after someone recommended I proceed immediately to a place called "Gentlemen's Quarters." For a moment I wondered what kind of community we'd moved to -- a place where no one could pronounce a long "a" and where I was probably always going to be getting my change in singles. No tassels at Marshall's, just old-school Hot Pockets for Cornish miners. We've had beef, pork, veggie, you name it. Great stuff. Had the chicken pastie. Came in at the end of the day. Was put off by the lady warming up the pastie in a microwave. Couldn't they have invested in a salamander grill/toaster oven set up. Microwaving it totally wrecked the texture and possible flakiness of the pastry. I have had better and personally made better myself. read more

After spending an evening at the Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley, I stopped here and check out this so call "pasties" after some friends told me the historical aspect of this food. I gave the beef pasties a try and could almost imagine the miner's with their lunch pail warmed by a candle with the pasties, tea and a saffron bun deep in the mines surrounding Grass Valley. It was a bit salty but delicious. I will try it again when I find myself back here. read more

If you are looking for something hardy and scrumptious this is the spot. I would recommend getting it cold and taking it home and heat it up in a toaster oven because I'm very anti microwave. If they didn't use a microwave to heat them I would definitely give them another star. read more

Marshall's are the best pasties in town. The crust is amazing. We have tried all the different flavors. If you like ham and cheese you will be in hog heaven. One warning-It is tiny. If there are more than a few customers, you may not fit inside. Don't let that deter you though. read more

Microwaved? That's a bad start. The prices are fine. The customer service is also, the hostess was very friendly. As soon as I ordered, she went to the back and popped a pasty into a microwave for about 3 minutes. Characteristic of microwaved food, my pasty was very hot on the outside and lukewarm in the middle. As for the flavor, it was bland and rather dry. I know these things aren't traditionally fancy, but it really wasn't that good. I did eat almost the whole thing! I relied on vinegar and ketchup lent some extra flavor. read more

Go here the people are so nice and the food is very very good. These are real Cornish pasties and they have an apple one that is heaven.

There used to be a place near me when I lived in New Jersey that sold pasties. They were fresh made and outstanding. Also when I was growing up, my grandmother with freshly make pasties at home. So imagine my excitement in Grass Valley finding Marshalls pasties. My excitement quickly waned as I had to run across the street to the bank and use an ATM to get cash. No credit cards are accepted at Marshalls. I got a beef pasty and I ordered a sausage one for my wife. The beef pasty was very bland. Very flavorless. Have to say my wife's sausage pasty had a lot more flavor but she complained that it was very bland as well. I'm all for supporting local businesses but I can certainly make a much better pasty at home than what I got here at Marshalls. read more

I love this tiny little downtown shop, if you grew up in this area, chances are you have some gooood memories of eatting these pasties. It always smells so good when you walk by you HAVE to go in and get one. That golden brown flakey crust is one of the best things in the world! read more

Hubby and I went to Marshall's when in town for my niece's daughter's first Birthday. We read that if you visit Grass Valley/ one MUST have a pastie, the food of the Cornish gold miners. These are pies, like meat pies (think hot pockets). Hubby had a beef pastie, I had chicken. These were good, not great. Maybe a little dry. But the experience is worth it. Give it a try! read more

Love this place! We went back twice while visiting Grass Valley. It's a no frills, down to earth location with super nice people. We tried the sausage and Han & cheese hot pasties and loved them. The ingredients are real and made with a lot of love! We went back and tried the apple pasties! They were yummy bites of hand held apple pie. What more could a girl ask for on her birthday. Absolutely outstanding!!! Authentic pasties that taste as good as our family's homemade/traditional recipe. We were in Grass Valley for the Cornish Christmas and came across the little gem! Will definitely be back and will be bringing my Finnish father who is from Upper Michigan whose family grew up with pasties. He currently orders from a place in Michigan but after trying Marshall's Pasties, I am sure we will be making frequent visits here to pick up pasties to go! Really good Pasty's. I recall in the 70's going up to the foothills (Lake of the Pines) every summer for two weeks for vacation with my folks, there was many pasty places around GV and Nevada City. Used to be a place called King of the Pasty that was just the bomb but sadly it closed it doors in the 90's forever as did most of the other places that made them. Still happy there is a couple places left but I have to say, none are or were as good as King of the Pasty. read more

absolutly my favorite place to purchase a pastie. They were delicious warm or cold. They also offer vinegar or ketchup to go with your pastie. my favorite pastie is the Veggie one, it is full of flavor and savory spices that add to the delicious experience. I highly recomend visiting them. Their cute shop is right in downtown Grass Valley. They have limited seating but walking around town is always fun. went to have a few with my son. It feels like they would rather rush you out with a to-go order than have you dine in ... its very small just a few tables but we didn't mind. The pies were more dough than meat or Potato's. we had ordered the Beef ....The consistency was more like minced meat and little to no potato's. I had a past'e Once before at the fair and it was chucks of meat and potato's I guess I went in expecting the same but later found out that Marshall's didn't prepare it that way !! Of course my son was fine with Ketchup but I prefer the malt vinegar I'm not a toddler!! but because the two bottles were being used and the lady didn't want to open another I had to wait for one of the other customers to give up a bottle it was awkward and my pie was cold towards the end. Wow! These are some of the best pasties I've ever had - and I've had pasties made by generations of Finnish aunties! The flavor is so exquisite I didn't even use ketchup! (a first) and the crust is not too thick, and a beautiful flaky texture. And...they have so many fun varieties to try, all of which we loved! I'll be back and will be buying even more! read more

I grew up in Grass Valley, so pasties were just part of the local culture and everyone knew what they are. I was actually surprised when I moved away and couldn't find them anywhere. When I was back in town recently I decided to have Marshall's for lunch and it was as good as I remember. I enjoyed it so much I wound up buying a dozen to take home with me. Whenever I return home to visit (30 years later) we make sure to buy a dozen, and bring a frozen dozen back to Pennsylvania with us to enjoy. Pasties in general were always kind of meh to me until one day, I was walking down Mill Street with a friend at lunch time and we decided to get some food. It was a very cold day so we were kind of thinking soup, maybe pizza....then we happened to walk by Marshall's, and though I had eaten there in the past and never been blown away, the delicious smell of meat and pie crust wafting onto the street was irresistible. We squeezed inside (I mean literally squeezed...the place is TINY) and ordered two beef pasties and while they heated them up for us we decided we'd take them up to the balcony above which is I guess their dining room. As we climbed up the stairs it started to snow, and while we sat and ate our pasties Mill Street became softly blanketed in white and I felt like I had traveled in time back to the 1800s. Everything just looked so... quaint. Nobody else was really out, and those beef pasties with extra ketchup and extra vinegar just tasted so much better than I remembered. This experience could probably only be replicated on such a winter's day, but I encourage any visitors to Grass Valley to give Marshall's a try. read more

hands down, best pasties I've ever had. Not only that, but the staff are funny and helpful, the pasties are inexpensive (and also delicious!) and they're made right there in the shop. Make sure you're at the BEST pasty joint in California, on Mill street across the street from the Del Oro Theatre.
