I have been to this place a few times a year in the past but I haven't dine in since the pandemic started in 2020. Two weeks ago I took my family back for dinner and it was great. I got there at 6 pm and the place was empty. That got me scared a little. I wonder if the place is dead or the food is bad so people doesn't come back. To my delight the place is great, the server is attentive, and the quality of the food is actually better than before. Maybe it was a slow day. They offered 30% discount if you ordered Togo. Been eating at Maru for awhile and it's time for a review. Maru has good all u can eat sushi. Food comes out quick. My favorite is the bake crawfish roll. They give you a lot of crawfish too and not stingy like some other places. Be sure not to order too much when doing the all you can eat because they will charge for left overs. Maru Sushi has been my go-to place for AYCE sushi for at least 4 years now. They have always had great value for their AYCE price tag, the sushi portions are large, and they have a great variety of items on their menu. That being said, over the years, I have noticed a decrease in the quality of the fish, as well as an increase in wait time. In earlier years, my friends and I would order a handful of rolls and sashimi per round, and the fish always tasted and looked fresh. For this reason, I kept bringing more friends and family to eat here. Unfortunately, over the last 2 years, the quality of the sushi was either hit-or-miss. For example, when I order the tuna roll, the fish was fresh and delicious on some days, other days it tasted sour and had a slimy texture. Additionally, the wait time for the food has been getting longer over the years. Before, even during busy lunch and dinner hours, I have never had to wait for good sushi at Maru for longer than 20 minutes. Recently however, we have waited up to 45 minutes for our full round to come out, oftentimes missing items we marked (and sometimes bringing rolls we didn't order). I would like to note that the waiters/waitresses and host/hostess are always very friendly and professional, so this is not to say that the customer service overall is terrible. As such, comparing the sushi quality and wait time from before until now, Maru has been on a decline for me. That being said, I do hope they improve on these issues, as I would love nothing more than to keep coming here and bringing others with me! read more

Maru Sushi has changed their AYCE menu. And, now, I truly am a fan. Guys, I know I sound like a crazy person. I mean, this place has a three-star average right now. But listen, the new menu is the tits! I swear. Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye. The new all-you-can-eat menu is slightly pricier. It's about $22 for dinner and $18 for lunch. And, hot damn, they know how to do it! Of course you can still order teriyaki, tempura, miso, edamame and all sorts of other things from the kitchen. That's the same. The rolls are much better now. Less rice, and more fish. And more options. The roll champion: Albacore Roll (tied with the Lobster Popcorn Roll) The roll loser: The crispy tail. Some deep friend nonsense. (Sorry, crispy tail, you can't win 'em all!) The biggest change is that you can now order nigiri with the AYCE. What's more...the fish is all fresh and tasty. I can tell you don't believe me. You're telling the person sitting next to you in the cafe right now that you're reading about some crazy lady on the 'net and how she thinks she found good sushi. Lunch for two with drinks $46 We were in the mood for AYCE sushi and Yelp search came up with Maru Sushi. Great, only a 5 minute drive away. I never knew it was here. Just a stones throw away from GEN BBQ...another AYCE winner. The young lady at the front greeted us and sat us immediately. No waiting. It was our first time and she explained how it all works. Simply write your order on the check list. There's 3 "sessions" but she said if you want more then just fill it in on the side. There's no time limit, either. Any substantial leftovers will be charged as is the rule for many AYCE restaurants. We power downed 3 full sessions. I can't remember how many rolls total but it was a lot. Nearly a food coma. It was definitely nap time when I got home. Our plates were always removed promptly. Tea was refilled quickly as well. Pretty decent sushi for the price. So, I finally made the leap and went from just going to buffet with sushi to a real sushi bar. It was a great decision. I want to thank Hazel Q. for suggesting it and giving it such a thorough review. My wife and I went for a late lunch. If you go I would suggest getting there by 1-1:30 as they close at like 2:30 for the afternoon and then re-open for dinner. We used the AYCE menu. To be honest to me it looked almost identical to the À la carte menu. So for about $18 each we had 7 cut sushi rolls and one hand roll. Our Sushi chef was John and he was a delight. He was both helpful and friendly. And it was very educational to watch him roll as I have been learning to roll sushi. Previously I have not had a great deal of experience with sushi. Mostly places like Todai, Hakkaido, and on the east coast Ichiban. And in comparison to my previous experiences they were quite good. Having gone to Maru I doubt we will travel back to Hakkaido or Todai ever again. Now when I speak of inexperience with sushi - I have eaten quite a lot of sushi but only at sub-par places. And I have eaten tons of cooked fish. I love seafood. The fish at Maru was fresh and smelled and tasted it. The spicy tuna handroll had more spicy tuna in it than I have ever seen in one pile. It was delicious. After having it and then having the cut spicy tuna roll I realized that I prefer the convenience and ease of a cut roll if the price is the same. I would love to have some people message me to tell me why they like hand rolls so I understand the positives. Maybe its the excessive amount of spicy tuna that comes in a hand roll. The sushi chef recommended the las vegas roll and one that I didn't understand the name of. The moral to the story was that both were amazing. The baby lobster roll was my wife's favorite. The lobster in it was quite tasty and it had a fantastic sauce on top. We also had the spicy tuna tempura roll as well which was fantastic. My favorite by far was the dynamite roll. It was crispy and spicy and sweet all at the same time. I am person who loves complexity in one item and it had a lot going on and it did it all well. The hot tea was also quite good which is a big issue if your eating Asian food of any kind. The iced tea was pretty average and I probably will have something different cold next time I am there. Even though we were eating AYCE they told us that we could sit anywhere. I chose to sit at the sushi bar so that I could watch the chef roll and cut. I would recommend this place with no reservation. I have no negative to report only positives. I will be going again though - so I will definitely either edit this review or give you an update review. 3 stars, the sushi is just A-OK, nothing spectacular. Came here with a group of friends for a birthday celebration. We all opted for the AYCE dinner for $23.95. The servers were nice and attentive. Although I think some rolls were forgotten/never arrived. We ordered a variety of specialty rolls, hand rolls and nigiri to share. Honestly, some rolls had too much sauce/mayo. The eel also had some small bones. The nigiri didn't have too much rice; the fish to rice ratio was good. The yellowtail hand roll tasted good. I like the fact that the seaweed wasn't soggy... you know that feeling when you can't take a bite because the seaweed is too wet.. well the seaweed stayed crisp and it was easy to eat! Filled with plenty of fish. They also played a fun birthday song for the birthday girl and brought out a yummy dessert. It was vanilla ice cream with tempura fried banana topped with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate. The banana was so good with the vanilla ice cream. I tried Maru on the advice of my friend Aaron D combined with logistics: I was in town, driving from LAX to Costa Mesa, and passing right about dinner time. I did not come close to Aaron's intake of 12 hand rolls. I had the albacore, dynamite, spicy tail roll and one other I don't recall now. Plus 4 individual nigiri orders, 2 yellowtail and 2 saba. It was way, way too much food for one person and I didn't quite make it through it all. The most dangerous thing about Maru Sushi as that you fill out a card in advance with your menu choices so you are at great risk of ordering too much. (The card also says there's a maximum of 2 rolls per person on the AYCE, though it's clear from the reviews they don't enforce that.) So I advise you to take it slow... you can always ask for more. I liked the albacore for good fishy flavor and the dynamite roll for complexity including a hit of sriracha sauce on the top of each piece. Wish I'd had room for the baby lobster... from inspecting the menu that's what the "lobster popcorn" is technically named. Beyond this, the details blur. I honestly think 2 rolls per person is all a human SHOULD eat. The inari was less good. Saba was regular, the yellowtail oddly lean and pink (maybe not in fact yellowtail?) and the rice too dry and it fell apart in the wasabi sauce. 2 stars for that. But 4 stars for the rolls, the value and the friendly people... I think it is likely to increase quality compared to an assembly line like Todai when you sit at the sushi bar and the chef is making food in front of you and sees you are enjoying it. And then I have to bump it up a bit to balance some of the haters below. read more

I went here yesterday and we sat at the bar. The rolls were very decently priced compared to what I am used to and the fish was fresh. My soda, however, was very flat. The chef (who was the owner) was very attentive to us and even gave us a sample of some of his own creations to try. We had this awesome roll that had strawberries and mango and salmon & crab in it (topped off with a special sauce that was very sweet tasting), and I told him he should name it the "pacific sunrise" roll because we were joking about how it tasted like breakfast sushi, but he seemed to prefer the name "hawaiian special" roll. The Skinny: This places offers an above average experience of AYCE sushi. Sushi is above average and prices are affordable. Environment: The restaurant is located in a pretty large plaza that was very empty for a Saturday. It may be a little hard to find; you won't come here by driving by it and noticing a sign. You would have to know what you are looking for. As for the inside of the restaurant, it is very small. The tables are small and seats are small, which sometimes is an issue when it does get busy. Even though there were not many people ahead of us (around 2 groups), it took us almost an hour wait. Service: Service here is great. Even though it was a wait, the were good with asking who the people on the waiting sheet were periodically. The service (chefs) did falter when they forgot two rolls on our first order, but because it is AYCE it isn't that big a deal to me. We got it next round. Service was pretty prompt despite it getting busier while we were there. Sushi: I was surprised at how decent the sushi was. I always order Nigiri sushi when I do AYCE, and I get really annoyed at places that put large clumps of rice. This place had pretty minimal rice, how it should be. The fish was nice and fresh; I had salmon, yellowtail, scallop, and smelt egg and all of them did not disappoint. Maybe I had lower expectations for AYCE that I ended up being pleasantly surprised, but hey no complaints. Overall: 4/5 Though the place may be claustrophobic/tight to some people, you can't beat the price they got here for AYCE. (I'd save room in your stomach and avoid the tuna, as it's not that great a quality) Definitely get the oyster shooters if you've got the chance as it's 1 order per person (2 oysters per order) and that's the limit. So nice though. I was craving for some sushi inbetween my break at CSULB and GWC. I have the Yelp application for my Palm Pre and searched for "sushi" around "my current location" and Maru Sushi appeared. I recognize this place because I always pass by it on my way to the 405 N. This place is very cozy. It is Japanese decorated and they have many flat screen televisions hung up. I love how their specialty rolls are displayed as pictures on the menu, which is more appetizing. The price is affordable, but the sushi rolls are a bit on the small side. I've experienced Japanese restaurants with larger sushi rolls, so that was a bit disappointing. My favorite is the Hot Kiss roll! Yum! The waitress was very attentive and always refilled the drinks. However, my friend convinced me that we should give it a go if we couldn't quite pinpoint why this place wasn't that good. Well, I can say that my experience this time around was much better than last. All of our orders came out correctly and quickly. I was hoping they would actually slow down a bit. Among the things that I enjoyed: gyoza, jammig roll... but outside of that, everything else was pretty average. If there is one gripe that I have about this place, it is that the rolls come out way more sweet than savory. When I eat sushi, I want it to be more on the savory side. I had a bit of the salmon egg sushi and I'm not a fan, but my friend said he has had wayyy better salmon egg. Hot Kiss: shrimp tempura roll with salmon on top. The roll looked so pathetic...it was tiny and the shrimp tempura wasn't crunchy and the slices of salmon were so small. Crazy Roll: it had salmon, albacore, red snapper, cream cheese, cucumber, and avocado. Small roll was well and nothing 'crazy' about it either. Spider Roll: soft shell crab and avocado topped with crunch. Not crunchy at all. We ended up not even finishing it... Service: I would have to say service was pretty good. Food came out fast...maybe way too fast as if everything was already pre-cut or something. Come here for AYCE deal, not for a regular lunch/dinner meal. I've eaten here a few times in the past and I'd have to say my only great experience was when I opted to do their AYCE. The rolls come out quite quickly and every roll I ordered was super delicious. I especially enjoyed all of the "fried" rolls. I know, that was an unhealthy time in my life. :P Now, I've also dined here for lunch and a regular dinner and I would have to say the food AND service isn't as great. It takes them forever to bring out just your drinks and little appetizers and their standard spicy tuna or California rolls were pretty blahhh.
