Loved the tempura, but shrimp tempura reigns supreme. Udon noodles are handmade and perfectly cooked and chewy. Definitely worth a visit.

This location has a larger seating area compared to the South Coast Plaza location but it's somehow overall more disorganized and the food didn't hit the same. The udon was harder than usual and the broth wasn't hot. The service was great though with servers checking on us throughout the meal. read more

Although this was my first time trying udon, I visited with a group of 9 friends and was impressed by their diverse menu featuring various meat options and delicious curry. I ordered the chicken curry katsu, which had the perfect crunch and fantastic flavor. All 10 of us unanimously agreed we'd definitely be coming back for more. The restaurant seems to be in its grand opening phase, and it shows in the best way possible. The space is spotlessly clean, and the staff's enthusiasm is contagious. From the moment you walk in, someone is there to greet you warmly. Every few minutes, the entire staff calls out something in Japanese - while I don't understand what they're saying, it adds to the lively, enjoyable atmosphere. The service here truly stands out. Everyone is genuinely friendly and always wearing a smile. They seem to genuinely enjoy their work (either that or they're all having a really good time - just kidding!). Throughout our meal, I noticed Max making rounds to nearly every table, checking on guests and ensuring everyone was enjoying their experience - it's this kind of attentive service that makes dining here special. On my visit, I had an interesting experience when I was accidentally charged the wrong price. When I mentioned this to Max (who I think is a manager), I simply wanted to confirm the correct price and told him not to worry about it. However, he apologized profusely and went above and beyond to make it right, even though I was already satisfied with the situation. His dedication to customer satisfaction really impressed me. Here's the positive: First thing you see walking in a sign that tells you where to go if you want to order for dine in, order to-go, etc. 10+ employees will welcome you in and you get to see the food assembled in front of you. The reason I say "assembled" is because everything that goes into your udon is pre made. And they just add it into your bowl. The difference between regular and large is less than $1. But the biggest difference between them I would say is the amount of broth you get. But noodle wise, it's not a noticeable difference. The interior is clean, you can see ingredients put aside, labeled and dated. Work area was clean and surfaces still had a shine to them. Here's where they lost stars: I ordered the Nikutama Udon. The biggest turn off was how the meat tasted and looked like the beef you'd get from Yoshinoya. So essentially you're ordering beef Yoshinoya with udon. The only difference was that you'd probably get your food faster here than Yoshinoya. But taste wise, relatively the same I also grabbed a chicken katsu, which was $4.75 before tax and tip. For the price, you'd expect a larger size of meat. But without the tempura sauce, the katsu was dry. With the sauce, it was decent but still on the dry side. The tempura bar was disappointing. Many items were missing and what they had still left was dry looking. Recommendations for them would be to fry them in small batches and/or replace what's on the line so it's fresh for your customers. Summary: Overall it was an enjoyable experience. I came hungry and left comfortably full. After a long stressful day at work, I got to fill my belly with a healthy meal. Every restaurant has pros and cons. But they definitely have places they can easily improve on. I would definitely come back to try something else on the menu and maybe I just had a one off experience. I look forward to possibly an improved experience next time I'm here. read more

We came 15 minutes before closing but they were willing to take us in. It took around 5 minutes for all of us to get our food and that stocked us up on top of a student discount! Rose was an extremely sweet server and had a conversation with us even though we stayed beyond close. Great vibes, good seating, overall good time! read more

I ordered the Nikutama and it was good! The broth was sweet as advertised but not too sweet. I like the texture and slightly chewy taste of the udon. I was there during dinner and it wasn't busy at all. The servicers were very friendly. Overall I think it was a good meal and location. read more

This place opened up in the Diamond Jamboree Shopping Plaza recently so I went to try it out with coworkers. They have a lot more seating than the Marugame at South Coast and can accommodate big groups up to 8. Udon is decent but sides and drinks are overpriced. Great place for a quick bite to eat as they do shoo you along when there are long lines. Parking is a nightmare as always. There's now a large side parking lot on the right side next to the HMart if you can't find parking in the main plaza. read more

Have been coming here or to the Aliso Viejo store almost weekly. Food is always freshly made. Soup is hot and noodles cooked to perfection. They just released their Tonkotsu Udon and I had to give it a try. The broth is thick and savory as you would expect from a tonkotsu broth. charsui was thinly sliced and tender. A nice addition to the menu. I'll probably stick with my fav Nikutama. But keep this as alternative when I want something different. I've always liked udon more than ramen, but it's not as popular and usually an afterthought on a menu. Marugame is the gold standard of udon, imo. I love the variety of broth choices and addons, plus the different kind of tempura, and they have THE BEST chicken katsu- the breading is somehow lighter than air with a delightful crunch. My favorite things to order are Tonkotsu udon with kitsune added, chicken katsu (do not forget the sauce!) and their calamansi drink (which they serve with crunch ice and I'm obsessed). Saw some reviews about people complaining they felt rushed, I didn't get that vibe, but I will say it's more of a fast-past lunch spot as opposed to their South Coast Plaza location, which is cozier, but expect a line. I wasn't paid, I'm just a texture girlie who freaking loves food in taste and flavor with a crunchy ice addiction. So, if that's relatable, you'll love it. My stomach hurt after. I usually go to the South Coast Plaza location. I came to this location yesterday and one other time about 6 months ago. It was pretty bad compared to the South Coast Plaza location which is a 10/10. I had the curry udon noodle bowl and the quality was very poor. The liquid they put in is not as flavorful as the other location and very salty, the meat is very scrappy and fatty compared to the other location that's full of flavor and not scrappy, the egg that goes in the bowl was cracked on top of dried residue :( (that grossed me out). Overall it just feels like this location doesn't care as much and the quality is poor. The South Coast Plaza location feels very welcoming and the quality of the entire bowl is great. Food Udon: Broth was very light and almost tasted watered down. I understand that their noodles have always been machine made, however, today was the first time I've ever noticed a really bumpy and unpleasant texture to the noodles. Toppings: I got the sweet potato tempura, potato croquet, and "big chicken katsu". The tempura and croquet were as expected. I would not however call the "big chicken katsu" a katsu, it's more of a karaage with panko. It had a really bad after taste. Service Although we were greeted by a hello, the rest of the experience as a guest was blasé. On the cooking line they were shouting pretty loudly about running out of things, etc. Things that guest probably shouldn't hear. No one on the line seemed like they really wanted to be there, no one had a positive or welcoming attitude. Ambiance Typical food court vibes. Nothing outstanding. The place is well lit and the floors were clean. I moved to California from Honolulu, HI and if you know anything about Marugame Udon, you know there's a Marukame Udon in Waikiki. Maybe I was spoiled with the service and quality from Marukame in Waikiki, but you would think that this company would ensure their standards were being kept everywhere. Their shirts might say "irashaimase" or "arigato" but they aren't welcoming or thankful at this location. I would recommend searching for other locations or other options altogether. read more
