Stopped in on 11/10 around 5:00am to get a dozen donuts for work the service was horrible my wife was placing an order ahead of me I was next in line the sick girl started gathering the dozen for my wife's box as she was loading the donuts she asks the lady holding the mop if it was ok because she was sick. My wife asked if there was someone else who could help her that wasn't sick the lady holding the mop was rude made a comment saying my wife was rude for asking the girl is she was sick. That is what was rude her making that comment to a counter full of people. So I was next in line the guy working refused to help me because I was standing with my wife even though I said this was 2 different orders. Long story short I ended up not being served for whatever reason. Now there was a law enforcement officer behind me my wife told the lady she would pay for her donuts as well lots of confusion on for the lady who was the one mopping. Weird I know but made me very uncomfortable in this donut shop. Don't misunderstand their donuts are amazing this is not a post about poor quality donuts just about a horrible rude disrespectful staff and a sick girl working the counter. Again amazing donuts the last time I had them just wished I would have been served so I could have enjoyed some. Recommend staff gets some training on customer service and what should and shouldn't be said while they are working. What gets me I could have went to another donut shop I chose to drive to Mary's and still not get served. Customer appreciation would have been nice from the mop lady to the guy and the sick girl. Mary's is the go-to shop for apple fritters! They are proportioned well with pieces of apple, glaze, cinnamon and dough. They are dense, but not heavy, moist and yummy. I have had dry apple fritters elsewhere, but never here. They even keep well as leftovers if you don't finish the whole thing. (Sorry I'll have to get a pic on a future visit.) I think the glaze donuts n twists are really good here, too. Just the right amount of oil retention for flavor, moisture and not being too fluffy. The jelly in the jelly donuts is not too sugary and has the tartness level I like. Mary's has been a community favorite for many years. What keeps you coming back?" to which I replied, "first, quit bugging me, and also, I've been to Mary's twenty-three times that you KNOW about, jerk." When, where and how many times a day I eat donuts is a man's private concern, and I'm disinclined to tell the world how much I love donuts, in particular, Mary's Donuts. The reason is you people. You health nuts who eat and drink grass, snatching food from the mouths of cows that were going to be my dinner. You mean girls, all raw and jittery from your diet of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. You reducers, who lost weight, and then found true religion. You people can be judgy, and frankly, I don't feel like crafting a review that explains why donuts, if you're not willing to be convinced. I don't have a lot of time, and a risk/reward thing comes to mind. So, how about this: All y'all healthy people stop by Mary's for a Devil's Food donut, spread with simple chocolate icing. You'll find a surprise inside the donut, a subtle spice that teases, that captures the senses in a way that requires you to keep eating Devil's Food donuts until you understand, too late, that some glorious bastard laced the batter with clove, which, given the effect it has on chocolate donuts and their dependents, means that Mary's Devil's Food donuts ought to be a controlled substance. That visit should bring you to your senses, but if not, if you still think donuts are a bad thing, then you need to go live in a tree, 'cause friend, the things that make life worth living, here in the world, were not made for you. Moving on... For those who appreciate donuts, but don't know Mary's, I offer: A GUIDE TO MARY'S DONUTS 1. Devil's Food Donuts, as per my earlier recommendation. Plan ahead. Mary's runs out of these, several times daily. 2. The Maple Bacon Bar, which, notwithstanding Ben Franklin's opinion of beer, is truly proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy. I say this, notwithstanding the Maple Bacon Bar is grease, sugar and nitrites, because I don't care. It's good, and if you don't like Mary's approach, can I have yours, please? The place runs out of Maple Bacon Bars, as well. 3. Fruit Burritos, which aren't donuts, per se; they're flour tortillas stuffed with fruity filling, fried, then slathered with sugary icing. I know how that sounds. Doesn't matter. Get some. 4. Still hungry? Of course you aren't, but buy some Cream Puffs, anyway. These tiny two-inch purses are filled with Bavarian Cream or raspberry jelly, then dusted with confectioner's sugar. To the committed, they're bite-sized; just watch you don't inhale the powder. 5. Uber will deliver you to Mary's. Sure, that'll make your $5 box of donuts cost $25, but last week, you spent $40 for a $4 piece of fish at a glittery Gaslamp bar. Mary's donuts are a better value, better for you and, well, better. 6. The correct serving size is six donuts. Eat fewer, and you'll have leftovers (you bought six, didn't you?), and there's probably data indicating stale donuts are bad for you. Eat more, and you risk sensory overload, which is a real thing, like food coma. 7. Vegan donuts are made without lard, butter, milk, or eggs. So is dirt. Mary's serves tasty food, not dirt. You'll find vegan donuts at that cool shop in North Park filled with unhappy people clad in Birkenstocks, or skinny jeans, or whatever. 8. I've seen women crying in bars, and heard grown men shout angrily at the mirror in their gym, but in 60 years, I've never seen a sad person eat a donut. At least, not so's you could tell. 9. There is no redemption to be had from drinking skim vs. whole milk with one's donuts, so drink whole milk, and dunk those suckers. Better yet, drink really strong, black coffee with lots of sugar in it. Mary's makes decent coffee. They also make a great cake donut. Dunk it. 10. Sit down while you eat your donuts. If you stand, those springy, sweet and slightly fatty wheels of joy will send your eyeballs up and rearward, and you'll lose your footing. Better yet, take your donuts home and eat them in bed. Mary has insurance, but it's unfair to drive her rate up because you wouldn't restrain yourself. 11. A couple of years ago, after 31 years at its original location, Mary's Donuts moved to a shopping center in Santee, on Carlton Hills Boulevard, just off Mission Gorge Road, next to the GTM. If this is a problem, remember that you eat ramen in a Convoy strip mall between a car dealership and nine massage parlors, so stop being snooty. Good is good. ---------- Finally, folks, I feel bad. Had I done my job, you'd never have reached the end of this review. You'd have put down your phone or turned off your computer a while ago, and gone to Mary's. I don't live close to Mary's but it's definitely worth the drive. Had the best experience Wednesday. The lady working (sorry I didn't get her name) was so friendly and saw that I was making a box of goodies as a surprise "Leprechaun" treat for my kids. So...we spent the weekend camping at Santee Lakes and my niece won bingo at game night. Her prize, 6 coupons for a free donut at Mary's. She was stoked. Since we live in Orange County, we figured we had to go redeem them after a tiring morning of cleaning and packing up the camp gear. All 5 adults with 6 kids head into Mary's and we saw the yummy donut case filled with so many goodies. Thats all that Mary's got going for them. The workers there who look like teenagers or even early 20s looked like they disliked their jobs. No smile, no greeting just "what can I get for you?" Someone was already helping us but Ms. False lashes came along and she brought some kind of entitlement with her bc you can see it all over her face and demeanor. Well, you can tell she was irritated and even talked to her coworkers loudly about our group and then proceeded to scold one of the poor workers bc they let us redeem a giant donut with one of the coupons.
