Problem with this place is, they only have 2 front of house staff for this gigantic place who are the server, the busser, the one who deal with food pick up, the one who answers phone calls, etc. They are just completely understaffed - FOR YEARS! We have been going to Ma's house for years, we do like their food but service has been even slower these few years. What prompted me for the 3 star review was, we dined in this past Sunday and I saw on our receipt that they charged $1.50 for Tea for each person. Amazing experience at this place! The food was incredibly delicious, and what made it even better is that everything is halal that really means a lot to me. The tea was also great, very refreshing and perfectly made. The service was excellent, so I happily left a 20% tip totally deserved! We ordered the green onion pancakes , orange peel beef, the crispy duck, the short ribs and the shrimp chowmein. One thing you do not want to sleep on is the green onion pancakes. It's sort of a fusion of East Indian and Pakistani flavors with West Chinese cooking. Imagine crispy fried bread with the subtle flavor of green onions embedded in it. It's the perfect companion for any flavorful Chinese dish. We had the spare ribs, but between three grown men, we wish there were more ribs to spare. Great tasting dish, but limited quantity And yes, orange chicken is a popular selection, but I promise you orange beef will not disappoint. If I had to make a comparison, I would say orange beef is the fancy equivalent of Beijing beef served at panda express, although with a specifically citrusy flavor. We ordered so much we weren't able to add it in, but I would strongly also suggest trying either the three flavor sizzling rice soup or the chicken, egg drop soup. Disclaimer, I am from New York, where we have the best Chinese food in my opinion. My family suggested the spot while we were out here in California on vacation and it did not disappoint. We ordered several different foods one of our favorites being chicken and broccoli with white rice and it was very tasty, The Kung pow chicken and orange chicken were also delicious service was fast and courteous. The restaurant itself is no-frills not fancy but just right for a large group and we were seated properly. Food came out quickly as well. Highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

We have dined at Ma's House in the past and have enjoyed the experience. Today's lunch was no exception. We happened to visit during Ramadan, so lunch was quiet and service was immediate. Lunch specials range in price from $14.50-$16.50 including soup, spring roll and a generous serving of a steaming-hot and delicious entree. Dishes labeled with a red pepper logo indeed are spicy but not to the extent that the hot chiles would paralyze one's taste buds. This restaurant is an anachronism; their menus items are priced as comparable Chinese restaurants were pre-Covid years. Their main-course lunch specials deliver generous portions of well-prepared, authentic Chinese cuisine. My bottom line: "Try it, you'll like it". read more

So went there for dinner and had the #19 fried chicken and it was a disappoint. Started with the hot and sour soup. It was a bit on the salty side and heavy with the a beef broth test. The chicken was dry and I mean dry... did I say the chicken was dry? The taste had potential... so the place was busy and clearly understaffed... Avoid this restaurant. the worst-tasting and most unsanitary Chinese restaurant I've eaten in my ten years in US . I ordered the braised beef noodle soup with handmade noodles, but all the noodles were broken -- not a single intact strand. The broth was so dark it looked like they poured in half a bottle of dark soy sauce. I ordered the cumin lamb, but it was obvious they used way too much meat tenderizer. The texture was so slippery it felt like laundry detergent had been added, and I couldn't even tell what kind of meat it was supposed to be. Only my husband ate the lamb soup -- as shown in the photo -- and without commenting on the taste, he was the only one who got diarrhea afterward. Ma's House, this location used to be a solid 4.5 stars pre Covid. However, our recent visit led us to recognize that food quality and flavor have unfortunately gone way down. What was once our favorite dishes like the sliced jalapeño chicken or Mongolian beef, are not the same. The chicken chowmein is now sticky noodles with mushed chicken pieces and an incredibly large amount of bean sprouts. For the price during lunch you really can't beat it. However, the egg roll is now tasteless, the egg flower soup is grainy and again, bland, and the entree portions are substantially smaller. Because I have such a dear spot for Halal Chinese in my heart, we may be back in the near future, but I truly hope they pick up for what they've lost, and that's truly the lack of flavor that once existed and drew us to them weekly. Family style dining for large groups of people or individuals with hefty appetites. The proportions are HUGE. Each dish serves at least 3 people. My favorite dishes were the 3 Flavor Fried Rice w/ beef, chicken and shrimp and the sesame breads from the dim sum menu (which serves about 5-7). People who don't eat pork will appreciate Ma's House, as everything is halal. I get tired of asking if there's pork or lard in the foods I order at other Asian restaurants that tend to use a lot of pork products. Modern decor with soothing neutral colors. Super clean. Husband got the noodles with three different kinds of meats - also yummy. Mom's got the veggies with noodles. Dad got the honey walnut shrimp, and I got the beef rolls. The food here is good, but it is seriously under-staffed. There's one man and one woman (probably husband and wife), running around to service all the tables. I'm not kidding, the poor lady was constantly running to keep up with the demands. They were both very pleasant. The restaurant is clean and spacious. For the size of the restaurant and volume of customers and to-go orders, they need at least 2 more employees (and that's a bare minimum). For our visit, we ordered the hot & sour soup and the hand shaved noodle stir fry with shrimp. The portions were huge! Great value! There's a large parking lot with plenty of parking spaces. Once they get their staffing issues straightened out, I think this will be a great restaurant to consider for large parties and special events. Come check them out, but have patience! read more

I ate at Ma's House for the first time last weekend. The food was ok. The sizzling pepper beef, three flavor kung pao and the sauteed pea pod leaves were all decent, though somewhat bland. The kung pao had LOTS of red chili peppers in the dish but strangely, almost no heat. It's as if the peppers were added into the dish after cooking. The pea pod leaves were sauteed with fresh garlic but had very little garlic flavor. The sizzling rice soup was a complete failure. This dish is intended to contain crispy fried rice that remain crunchy in the soup. The fried rice did not sizzle at all when dumped into the soup, and the rice was not crunchy but instead chewy and gummy. We sent the soup back, agreed to accept a won ton soup, and when that had not arrived by the time we'd eaten everything else, told them to forget it. The egg rolls were crunchy outside, and a uniform "mush" on the inside. Overall, I would give the food three stars. Service, however, was pretty awful. First, there was a cart with dirty dishes parked right next to our table. The server came and cleaned off other diners' plates into the plastic slop trough literally steps from where we were dining. The slop cart with the scrapings and dirty dishes remained right next to us well into our meal until I asked whether it would be possible to move it. It was then moved about 5 feet away, next to a table at which were seated another group of diners! This fact alone is enough to convince me not to return to Ma's House. When the slop cart was parked next to us, smells of the discarded food mingled with our (presumably) fresh food. Additionally, service was slow, even though the restaurant was only about 1/5 full. We had to ask multiple times for things and dishes were kind of just dropped onto the table. Although our group won't return, Ma's House really needs to understand that it's a real turnoff to have others' trash and half-eaten food scraped off plates just steps from where you are trying to eat your own order. Leaving it parked in the dining room just gives the impression that the owners/management don't care about cleanliness or sanitation, and gives rise to all sorts of negative speculation about the state of the kitchen. read more

Ma's House, which has a location in Orange County, replaced a previous Chinese restaurant (forgot the name) at Madison Place in Clairemont Mesa. The huge dining room was bright with a modern decor. It could easily seat over 100 customers. I grew up in an area with access to a lot of halal prepared food but never Chinese cuisine so it was cool to see the mix of Middle Easterners, Asian Indians, and Chinese who were dining when I arrived. The menu was overwhelming with many choices... appetizers, cold dishes, soups, warm pots, dim sum, lamb, beef, seafood, poultry, vegetables, fried rice, home-style noodles, noodle soup, and chow mein/chow fun. There were probably close to 200 different entries. Note that steamed white rice was not included with the individual items so it must be ordered a la carte. I picked the Steamed Chicken Dumplings and the Lamb Dough Sliced Chow Mein for my meal. The noodles actually came out first. What I really liked was the lack of oiliness in the chow mein. Too many places cook their noodles using an abundance of oil which leaves the dish very greasy. The dumplings were served as a set of ten resting on a large lettuce leaf inside a steamer. They weren't too doughy, and the chicken filling was decent. Family style is the way to go at Ma's House. Bring a large group to enjoy and share the offerings. Overall, I gave my dining experience a four star rating. read more

Overall, the visit was ok. I came on a Monday right at 4:30pm when they open for dinner. I give the place high marks for food quality and ample parking. Like another reviewer, the odor at the entranceway was a bit off-putting. It reminded me of maybe an Asian shoe store or Asian pharmacy. And like another reviewer mentioned, there is a cart that they dump all the dirty dishes into, and it is in plain sight (though not right next to me). Service was kind of gruff, no smiles, just down to business and acting borderline annoyed at customers. Despite the central cart dump, the tables and floors looked very clean. The water tasted funny; coupled with the smell of the place, I could only bear to have a few sips. Luckily, the neighboring table's food came out quickly and it smelled good, so the bad smell dissipated. The white rice bowl is an extra $1.50. Strangely, chopsticks were not at my table- just a fork. It was kind of unusual but not exactly bad. The beef chow fun's noodles had an excellent texture, not overly oily, not mushy, not stuck together. Beef was very good. The shrimp with snowpea leaves was good too. I personally think it was decent value for the money, as the platters are family sized. I am not sure I will return, but I think they are a very unique option, as a Halal Chinese restaurant. read more

one of the best comforting chinese food spots in san diego. the hand cut chow mein is amazing, it's my favorite dish! the egg flower soup, walnut shrimp, and beef and broccoli are also my go-tos here. service is always pretty quick and responsive. the restaurant has never been packed when i've been, so it can be a bit quiet inside. parking is also ample. i absolutely love coming here and highly recommend if you're craving some delicious traditional chinese food! read more

We placed a phone order from Ma's House for lunch. We ordered mongolian beef, kung pao shrimp, a single order of white rice, and an order of spring rolls. Our food was ready when we arrived to pick it up and was still hor when we got home. The spring rolls were good. Nice and crispy. The mongolian beef had good flavor, but some pieces were a little chewy and some were very tender. There were no fillers, just beef and green onions. And they gave you quite a large amount, enough for probably 2 to 3 people. I was disappointed with the kung pao shrimp. The portion size was very generous, and it only contained shrimp, peanuts, and green onions with no fillers. It just lacked in flavor. The sauce was watery and had no real taste to it to me. And that's pretty much the only dish I order when I go out to a Chinese restaurant. So comparably it was the worst kung pao shrimp that I ever had, but it wasn't terrible. I give it a 6/10 and once again, they gave you tons of shrimp, and you could easily make two meals out of it. One thing that we really appreciated that a lot of restaurants don't do is that they did not close the container of spring rolls. They left it open so the steam could get out and the rolls remained crunchy. I gave them extra bonus points for that and their fast and friendly service. We came on Sunday, October 30th, 2022 around 11:30 AM when they just opened. The restaurant was solely just us and we shared family style (6 people). Plenty of parking. Clean restaurant interior. We ordered: -Three Flavors Sizzling Soup: interesting soup that came out with rice on the side. The waiter asked if we want to use all of the rice, but we asked just for half of the rice to be poured in. Tasted alright, godo to have soup on a cold day. -Mongolian Beef: Moist and juicy. You can't go wrong with ordering this! -Honey Walnut Shrimp: Mmhmm! I always love honey walnut shrimp. The mayo and the honey in the sauce is always such a good combination. -Eggplant with Spicy Sauce: We ordered without meat which was great since we saw this one as our veggie dish from our choices. Very tasty. -Chicken Chow Mein: this was alright, the usual chicken chow mein. -House Special Chicken: very saucy and flavorful. We ordered 4 bowls of rice whic they combined into 1 medium size bowl with lid to keep it warm. We had 3 guys and 3 girls in our group and finished everything. They were out of lamb with pickled cabbage when we were there. And I swear I didn't see lamb with cumin on the menu when we went, but when looking onsite on their menu, it show's it's there. I wonder if the menu we were looking at might have changed. There is also no alcohol here. This is apparently a chain restaurant where they have two other locations in Anaheim and Laguna Hills. Very authentic northwest Chinese food! I ordered my food through Hungry Panda as they have only $3.99 deliver fee recently. The dishes I recommend are honey walnut shrimp and sesame red bean pancakes, also the egg rolls are pretty great as well. The other dishes like eggplants and lamb pot are nice too, but their portion is too huge. I definitely need to froze some to eat in later days. read more

Ma's House is quiet at lunch time. Lots of parking available unlike most Convoy St eateries. Three Flavors Won Ton soup came with shrimp, chicken, and beef. Broth was on the salty side with lots of salt/msg. Won tons had a thick won ton wrapper and a small amount of chicken inside. Luckily there was lots of chicken and beef in the soup to negate the starchy flavor from the won ton wrapper. Good amount of snow peas, carrots, mushrooms, and napa cabbage in the soup. Overall this is a good dish. Next time I'll ask for less salt. Three flavors chow mein had a heavy white pepper aroma and flavor. Noodles had a mild flavor I liked. Shrimp was plump and had a fresh flavor. Chicken was tender and moist. Beef was thin and had a tasty fresh flavor. I liked the flavor of the fresh bean sprouts and napa cabbage. This would be a great dish with less white pepper. Beef short ribs was $20 for a generous amount of beef. Very strong garlic flavor and there were lots of pieces of garlic on top of the beef. I'm not a garlic fan so I removed most of the pieces. Beef was tender and had a sweet flavor I liked. read more

This restaurant has become a favorite of mine for my Chinese food cravings. It is located near my house, and I have either dined in or ordered food via Uber Eats. In the past, I always used to just drive by this place, until one day I decided to walk in and try it out. My two favorite dishes here are: Three Flavor Spicy Curry Fried Rice and the Three Flavor Dough Sliced Chow Mein. The portions provided for each dish are huge, and typically last me 2 more days when I don't eat everything in one setting. For the price you definitely get bang for the buck. Most of all, the food is tasty, seasoned just right, and the proteins like beef and chicken are tender, and the shrimp are nice and plump. Whenever I dine in or order food online here, the quality and quantity are what makes this spot my "go to" for Chinese food. read more
