My wife was in the mood for Sushi so I thought we'd go to Princeton. NOT to have to deal with the crowds or a wait to get seated we decided to come here. We've been here before and the food had been good. Unfortunately tonight was a different story. We ordered fried soft she'll crab ad an app. It was delivered to the table cold and chewy as if it had been fried earlier in the day. Also, the same with a shrimp tempura roll. The same cold, floury, chewy texture as the crab. Manager came over, I explained and he apologized and said he would remove the roll from the bill. While he was genuinely interested we finished our meal, got the bill that never was adjusted, paid and left. I think this was the last time we'll come to this restaurant. There are too many good places to go in the area and I should have gone with my first choice in Princeton. read more

You would never expect to find a great place like Masa 8 in a nondescript NJ strip mall, especially not next door to a pizza place called "Chuckles." But as soon as you're seated, you forget about the whole strip mall thing and begin to feel like you've been transported to a trendy little spot in the city no one else has discovered yet. The decor is dark and modern, but not sparse--a great place to make googly eyes across the table at your date (you'll both look better in the dim lighting). The real star, however, is the food. Comparable to Zento in Philadelphia, the sushi rolls here were both beautiful to look at and exceptionally delicious. A modern approach using tasty sauces and even a blow torch (try the Volcano roll!) and inventive combinations like tuna with mango make this place well worth a visit. BYOB read more

I have absolutely not a clue in the world as to why this resturaunt is rated so well. I believe everyone who gave this place a good rating has never actually had a diverse array of experience with sushi. The sushi looked like a low grade, rotten version of what they are supposed to look like. The presentation was awful but it tasted even worse than it looked. The fish was gross and the tempura flakes tasted just plain odd. If you really think this is a good place to eat sushi you have no idea what you are talking about. So you like sushi? Then you need to try Masa 8. It's in a small shopping center, you'd miss it if you blink. Seats around 20 to 30 max. What to get for lunch? The bento box. It's $9.99 and you get a ample amount of food, by far the cheapest bento box around. My fav is the shrimp tempora, comes with soup, sushi, rice, salad, and something else I cant recall at the moment. Delicious! How about dinner? If you're in the mood to spend a little more, go straight to the "Special Rolls" section. And order.....anything. They are on average $12 per roll for a reason. Must try the Volcano Roll and the ninja roll. Volcano Rolls are torched with a butane lighter, tho they don't come "on fire" they are quite spicy and savory. The ninja rolls are deep fried...need I say more? Everything is very fresh, I've made it a goal of mine to bring all of my friends to enjoy this place. Not one unsatisfied customer. I can continually go there and get a quality meal. Waitresses are very nice and every time someone walks through the front door the sushi chefs are sure to yelp out in your honor. Since I left Los Angeles I have been craving a place like this. I highly recommend Masa 8! My wife and I choose to sit at the Sushi Bar, and order from the Chef "Owen", who will make anything you desire. I am finicky when it comes to Sushi...everything is extremely fresh, and delicious. The decor is cool and lounge like, and once you are inside it is hard to believe that this is a strip mall. Masa 8 is one of my favorite restaurants in this area - not only is it decently priced, but the quality of food and the variety are really impressive. It's a nice place to go for a quiet and affordable dinner! They have a "two special rolls for 14.95" all-day deal which is definitely worth taking advantage of. I'd recommend the November 20 roll (it's not always on the menu, but they'll always make it if you ask!) and the Lemon Salmon. roll. They also have quality spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls, but these don't qualify as special rolls and are only discounted as part of the lunch deals. Don't be fooled by the strip mall, as soon as you step inside Masa you feel like you're in a dark little oasis with nice people and delicious sushi. Highly recommend for sushi-lovers! read more

This is my go to place for a lunch special. Sushi rolls are fresh and are more fish than rice. The rice is well seasoned and service is prompt. Certain items on the menu are not worth the price but most offerings are solid. If I'm not feeling well the vegetable soup is a great value and comforting. read more

I've been on the West coast for quite some time so sushi and variety of sushi was always there. Moving back East, the variety of sushi was pretty lackluster. That being said, Masa 8 proved me wrong. The rolls were very generous with just a small layer of rice in each roll. A lot of places love to add rice as a filler to save money on ingredients, which is not the case with Masa 8. Really impressed and no questions about it, this is my go to sushi place. I highly recommend the Volcano roll and the Masa roll. We also tried the standard California, which was probably the best California roll we ever had...that's saying a lot (for how basic it is). Masa is definitely hands above all other sushi/Japanese places in this area... including Edo in Pennington, which used to be my favorite. Try the Mexican roll if you like spicy, its amazing! And an "off menu" item that is a favorite of mine is the Lemon Salmon roll. Its a lemony salmon with beautifully thin slices of lemon (rind and all!) laid across the top. Its very good! Just ask for it, and they will make it. I've been to the restaurant 6 or 7 times now and it has been consistent across the board. Best sushi we've had outside of NYC. Mass 8 has been our weekly stop for several years. Our "I don't like that" picky-eater daughter loves this place. You have to try the Spicy Tuna Crunchy Bowl and the Volcano Roll. The Mass Roll and just about any other special rolls on the menu are a work of art. As a BYO, we enjoy trying different wine pairings, and it really helps keep costs down. It is rarely busy and the staff are always willing to go the extra mile for customers. It's a great place to go for conversation as the quiet atmosphere makes it easy to her each other while note feeling like your neighbor is overhearing your conversation. I get this craving for veg sushi sometimes for lunch and I'm always pleasantly surprised by this place and how fresh and clean and tasty their food is. The miso soup is delicious, I think they use white miso paste as the soup is not as salty as others. I love that I can get pickled daikon here as a lot of places don't offer that in their sushi. A friend had salmon for lunch and said it was really good. They serve a nice green tea (also a lighter variety) which is smooth and soothing as green tea should be. This place has all-you-can-eat sushi for a ridiculously low price. And, it's delicious! Their all-you-can-eat menu offers regular sushi rolls, special sushi rolls, sushi/sashimi a la carte, soup, salad, appetizers, dessert and a soft drink for around $18.95 for lunch and $24.95 (I believe) for dinner. For lunch, my dad and I dropped by and got the all-you-can-eat menu. We ordered... four special rolls three regular rolls ten pieces of sashimi a soup a gyoza appetizer two pieces of tempura shrimp one ice cream All of this cost a grand total of ~$40 after tax. If sushi isn't your thing, or if you're spouse doesn't like sushi, you can always order some of the less adventurous fare. They serve filet mignon, twin lobster tails and other things there. They also have bento boxes at lunchtime for $9.99 that come with an entree, a California roll, gyoza, soup, salad, rice and I believe one piece of tempura. You have to try this place. read more

There are lots of good sushi options but this one is the best I think. Wide range of items, the knifework is generally excellent, big menu, pricey but worth it. Service is outstanding once you become a regular, but I could see how it's less than perfect if you are new. The fish is pretty fresh, but this place is over priced and has a relatively small selection on the menu. Don't get the spicy salmon wrapped in cucumber appetizer. The salmon is not spicy and there is twice as much cucumber as salmon. As a true salmon lover, my heart was crushed. The rest of the meal was fine, but nothing to really brag home about. Worst tempura ice cream ever. You know it's not good when my boyfriend and I leave half of the tempura ice cream untouched, and we goad each other on to eat it... but it just melts on the plate. Sooooooo. The food was so good I forgot to take pictures. I remember the Mexican roll, the masa Roll, and the dark roll. For appetizers we had a seared tuna, salmon and a scallop dish (all 3 separate dishes). I apologize that I can't be more specific, but hunger struck and I didn't have a snickers. So at that point I was a savage tearing everything to shreds. My FAVORITE was the Mexican roll. The tuna was seared with a black pepper crust. It was SPOT ON! Management was extremely accommodating for my date and I. I won't say why, but tip *if you go in there with a friendly smile and good attitude, they will bend over backwards for you. Now....why a 4 instead of 5? Let me be clear again!!!!!! The food is amazing and there was nothing out of the 6 things I ordered, that I didn't like. Idk if it a Jersey thing (no offense at all) but it was BYOB. I'm from California, so I expect to be able to order a drink with my meal. What sucks is that (as a tourist) you find out (most of the time) after you get there, which means you either make a store run and come back, or take the "L" and eat with drinks that lack alcohol. I gave three stars based on 2 recent orders. In the past, I was never happy with the Chinese food, can't comment on the current state of the Chinese food.. But I'm a hunan beef guy. Ive had it everywhere.. They are all slightly different, but this one was sweet, and the beef quality was, well terrible. That was well over a year ago. This review is on the 2 sushi orders. I'm pretty much a spicy tuna roll person, sometimes others too, rainbow roll, love sushi grade fish. Also appreciate the fantastic Wasabi they use. First order was good, to very good, just the sushi rice needs vinegar.. Something missing from rice in the sushi, but the it could be overlooked a bit, but if you know sushi, and went to culinary school, youd know too. The Chinese pan fried pork dumplings w my sushi #1 was all dough, little pork, and deep fried, locked in a to go , and soggy oilinfused wedges is what I chose not to eat. The sauce w it has vinegar and scallion, etc.. That was killer w the sushi instead of plain soy sauce. At this point, I've ruled them fine for occasional sushi esque meal. On 2 order, just went w various tuna rolls. This is where I would give a 1 star.. The tuna was not sushi grade, as the tendon, or silver skin, like you remove from a tenderloin, running all through it. I chewed, a'd chewed, only to be nauseated by the vivid imagery of what the cat food parts of a salmon are made up of.. Now it wasn't cat food.. But it was absolutely not sushi grade, as there is nothing but the cleanest, leanest, free of any other part of the fish then pure unadulterated tuna colored flesh. This was not edible, and was the last time I've gone there. Deep frying, for pan fried is not interchangeable. Your prices reflect fine food, but that doesn't seem like something you can count on, so that's the worst. It could be good, but it might suck too.
