Came here with some friends for restaurant week - it really exceeded my expectations for a little place in a strip mall. I ordered the trout from the restaurant week menu. I don't normally order fish but I'm glad I did (though I am very curious about the pork chop they offered too!) It came on mashed potatoes with a little bit of broccoli rabe (could have used more veggies). One corner of my plate was INCREDIBLY salty though - maybe from the capers? A friend also ordered the trout and said hers was pretty salty as well. But no bones in the fish which is always great! For a starter we had some cheese curds. The highlight of those was the raspberry jalepeno sauce. I had a cesear salad (it was under dressed) and creme brulle for dessert. This was served a little chilled but it was super creamy and delicious (and in a disposable bowl so I could take it home :) The front of the restaurant sells bakery / desserts (including above mentioned creme brulle), ice cream and coffees. Super fun wall paper in the bathrooms too lol. Unfortunately I live quite far away so I likely won't be back any time soon, but I would definitely recommend it if you're in the area! read more

The amount of times I have been here since I moved to this side of the cities in May is definitely more than I can count on one hand...we were able to get a reservation on a Friday night and get a booth spot, which was great. I was able to hear those in my party, which was very difficult some or the other times I have been here. The appetizers came incredibly quick and hot. I went to Mason Jar Kitchen tonight with some friends and my wife, and the menu appeared to be very intriguing and promising. When we got there it had all the vibes of a modern trendy restaurant. The restaurant started out strong with the craft cocktails, which were very good. They were mostly gin and vodka drinks, but I was able to imbibe in the two mescal and tequila drinks which were excellent. They only had one whiskey drink which was basically an Old Fashioned by a different name. They could have had more than one whiskey drink, which is somewhat surprising because whiskey is popular right now but whatever. Appetizers came and they were decent. Nothing spectacular, but still pretty decent and better than normal chain restaurant fare. That was where the decent rating came into play. It was downhill from there. And by "downhill" I mean falling off a cliff. I ordered the Birria Burger, which is described as: "seasoned fresh beef patty topped with richly seasoned house-made birria beef, Oaxaca cheese, onion, cilantro, chipotle aioli; brioche bun; served with dipping consomé" So let's start with presentation...as you can see from the photo it was terrible. It looked like a cheap park cookout burger and just by the looks of it, it appeared to be a frozen food product patty mashed between a bun. I opened it up and saw the poorest excuse of birria meat I've ever seen. It was about a tablespoon in size. Beef birria is usually made with brisket, chuck roast or bottom round, all of which are very inexpensive cuts so there's no excuse for skimping because of cost. The Oaxaca cheese was miniscule and barely detectable. The photos show how poorly the burger was constructed and how little they put on the burger. I didn't taste any onions or cilantro in the meat. The chipotle aioli was on the bottom bun and it was barely there. I didn't even taste it. Listing it on the menu was basically a reminder of what was missing. So let's get to the meat- in short, it was disappointing. The meat was perfectly round and heavily compressed, and it looked and tasted like a pre-packaged food product. They say that it was "seasoned fresh beef", but it tasted like frozen patty. If it was actually fresh meat, it was heavily compressed to the point where it was a brick. What made it worse was that they cooked it to the point where it was well-done and completely grey and dry. There was no juice coming out of the meat, so any person could clearly see that it was drastically over-cooked. My wife, a vegetarian, even commented on how poor the burger looked. I would have sent the burger back if I thought they would have done a better job, but another friend at the table also got the same Birria Burger and his looked the same. The burger overall was an absolute disaster to where if I ever served that at my house to guests, I would be embarrassed. I hope management sees these photos and is embarrassed by them as well. It says a lot about a business when I have such little faith in a restaurant that I don't send terrible food back because I have no faith in them doing any better the second time. The beef birria itself was dry and flavorless to the point where calling it "birria" is an insult to birria. I don't even think they know what birria is- they probably just slow-cooked some beef in a stock pot and called it birria. I am both a competition barbecuer and Chicano, so I know what good meat is, how to cook it, and I know how to make juicy, moist birria. This burger was none of that. The saving grace was the birria consomé, which was very flavorful. It was vey salty, but that helped with the burger patty which was lacking in any flavor. The cilantro and onions were an added bonus. If it wasn't for the consomé, the burger would have been a complete bust. I will give them credit for the consomé, but it's too bad they couldn't produce any consistency in the rest of the food. Without the consomé this would have been one of the worst burgers I've had in a long time. The Parmesan garlic fries were decent, but you don't get very much. I dipped them in the consomé and they were even more tasty. Certainly nothing that rectifies the sin that was this burger. My wife got a margherita pizza and it was a Neopolitan style that was very mediocre. Overall this place isn't worth the time to try. The only saving graces here were quick service and good drinks. However, the drinks were even challenged because they were out of three of the beers on their menu. They even ran out of their rotating seasonal beer, which is just ridiculous given that there are 233 registered breweries in Minnesota alone. It's mid-October and there wasn't one single fall beer like an Oktoberfest or autumn ale. This is a restaurant that just doens't seem to care. If I had one piece of advice, it would be to go somewhere else. read more

Excellent service and a tasty brunch! Eagan is a bit of a hike for me, but a friend recommended this place. We made reservations, I would not come here without one. We tried that two weeks prior and there was a 2 hour wait so we headed elsewhere. It's nice they have a parking lot though. Any Mason Jar employee that we encountered greeted us and was smiling, I enjoyed that the staff was so friendly, I feel like that's lacking most places these days. The weekend brunch menu has options for every taste bud. I went with a handheld. Grilled turkey, apple, brie sandwich and a side of fries. My sandwich was GOOD, they didn't skimp on the gooey brie, and the cranberry wild rice bread pulled it all together. Fries were hot and crispy. We also had a couple pineapple mimosas, I could suck down a pitcher of those. The restaurant itself is really cute, a pastry display when you walk in, little bar, and hanging mason jars on the ceiling. The noise level though, that's what got to me. It was super difficult and annoying trying to hold a conversation, the restaurant had open tables so if it's that loud without a full restaurant I can't imagine what it's like when it is. If I'm I in the area, I'd stop in again for maybe to go and try a pastry or two. read more

Wow wow wow!! We came for our anniversary during restaurant week (how lucky are we to celebrate that every year!) and we finally made our way to MJK! We were so very impressed with everything about our visit. While it was busy we never felt rushed, our server was the perfect level of attentive and was so helpful in choosing wines for our restaurant week deal (3 glasses for $15 a steal!) and just so wonderful about keeping us happy. We did a soup and a salad, walleye and NY steak, and finished our meal off with Sebastian Joe's ice cream. Couldn't remember the flavors for the life of me but my *goodness* were they decadent. It was a beautiful day so we decided to sit out on the patio. No reservation was necessary even though it was pretty busy inside and out. I think it is fun what they have done with the mason jar theme. I think the patio would have been so so much more enjoyable if the loud carwash wasn't across the street. The service was great! Our waitress was wonderfully helpful and charming. I was happy that had more than just orange juice for the mimosa options. They offer orange pineapple and grapefruit juice choices. I chose to get takeout from Mason Jar Kitchen for lunch on a Tuesday. I love the GrubHub feature that is integrated into the Yelp app. It's so convenient to read an eatery's reviews, order what you want, and pay for it all through the app. I placed my order and then got an estimated time to pick it up. What stood out was local Minnesotan fare at this eatery. I love comfort food. The menu screamed it. I got the following items: - Chicken wild rice soup - Tater tot hot dish I took my time driving over to pick it up. It became a habit to stop by Caribou Coffee close to my hotel first, to kill some time and get my iced tea fix. Mason Jar Kitchen is located in a large plaza. I had no problem finding a parking spot. I parked at one of the curbside pickup spots, even though I was going inside to pick my order up. This eatery shares the same entrance as Cupcake, which is a bakery. I felt like I hit the jackpot! I walked in. A woman behind the counter said hi. I reciprocated and indicated that I had a takeout order. She went to fetch it. I looked at the dining room. There were mason jars hanging from the ceiling, which looked so elegant. I feel the need to return to check out the dining area alone. The woman came back with my order. I thanked her. I ended up buying an item from Cupcake because everything looked so good and I wanted something for dessert. I drove back to my hotel room to have lunch. I started with the soup. The chicken wild rice soup was excellent. It was creamy and hearty. There were chunks of tender chicken, celery, and carrots. This place went all out with the ingredients in this soup. I loved the wild rice, too. I highly recommend it. I then had the tater tot hot dish. hot dish (n.) A Minnesotan term for a casserole. I learned so much living in this state for two years. I will always have an affection for the place, the people, their unique accent, and Minnesotan terms and colloquialisms. This tater tot hot dish had everything that I love: ground beef, corn, house-made cream of mushroom, and tater tots on top with melted cheddar cheese. So simple. So scrumptious! It's comfort food at its best. I'd definitely get this dish again. It hit the spot. This place is a gem in Eagan. I love the Minnesota favourites section on the menu. Came to Eagan from Minneapolis for restaurant week, kind of disappointing, although I'll say a couple of the entrees were nice. Starters: The Baked Goat cheese lacked presentation as well as not really being "baked." The goat cheese had been squeezed out of a frosting piping bag into a pile in a dish of warmed marinara sauce, neither of which were close to being "baked", served with baguettes. It was edible but fell short on execution. Entrees: I was very pleased with the Seared Scallops served with creamy corn asparagus risotto. The scallops had a perfect sear to them with a butter drizzle over the entree. Tenderloin pasta: The presentation looks like a stroganoff but the taste was completely different, very tender steak, just as promised. The entree had a balsamic reduction with gorgonzola crumbles. Very tasty! Minnesota Walleye dish: The fish had nice flavor but presentation looked like a soggy fillet on a pile of mash. Chili Mac: Disappointed and fell flat from menu description. The "Chili Mac" should be name "Corn Chip Mac", once you got past all the corn chips there was only a few chili beans mixed in the dish. In reading a few other reviews, this seems to be a common opinion. Hopefully they will take a hint and actually start putting more chili on it. Cocktails: I would suggest sticking with beer or wine when dining here. We had two different cocktails and both were left wanting. The Old Fashioned was very weak, it was made with Bulleit rye and bourbon, but I would suggest the restaurant stock their bar with some more of a variety of bourbon and rye. Sweater Weather cocktail: This one should be labeled as a dessert cocktail, very sweet. The description said it had a Chai syrup, however it seemed more like a chai latte as the drink was very cloudy. read more

This was a great spot for dinner with my family. We came here with a group of 7 at around 5: 30 pm on a Sunday and it was the perfect time before it got too busy. I asked our server a question about how the cauliflower pizza was prepared and she informed me the pizza is made on a separate pan for those with celiac. They take allergies seriously and I like that they differentiated between celiac and gluten free. For dessert I had to try the creme brûlée. I got the individual size and it was the perfect amount! We came in at 9:45 on a Sunday morning and were able to get a table right away. We ordered the mango lemonade, cinnamon roll waffles, and the mushroom scramble. The lemonade was pretty good but pretty sour, the cinnamon roll waffles were DELICIOUS and had a cinnamon roll filling and cream cheese frosting. The scramble was what you would expect out of scrambled eggs but still good and the salad needed more dressing. Overall really good breakfast and priced well! We came here for some baked goods as they won an award from cupcake wars. I am honestly not sure how they won. It was an overall bad experience. The customer service wasn't great. We were not greeted or acknowledged for over 5 minutes. Some person came up after us and was served first which was uncool. We got 4 things. We got the grasshopper cupcake which tasted like it was moldy/mildewy and freezer burned. The frosting tasted like it had zero sugar and was made with a crisco vegetable oil base. The mint tasted very artificial and gross. It was 0/5 stars. We got the blueberry macron which tasted like an artificial filled blueberry pop tart 1/5 stars. We got the vanilla bean macron which was really good 4/5 stars. We also got the pistachio macron 4/5 stars. Came out for a birthday dinner and couldn't be more pleased. Dropped off some birthday flowers ahead of time and the staff made sure they were at our booth when we were seated. We had such a great meal here today. We got both the giant caramel and cinnamon roll. Both were good but the caramel roll was the favorite. My fajita omelet was amazing and the hashbrowns were cooed perfectly. My daughter's pancakes were thick and fluffy and her friends French toast looked amazing. The service was great. Our only complaint is the syrup. It was super watery and just meh. I hope they can fix that!! read more

If you are on the fence about the butternut squash ravioli, do it! It's really fantastic. The pistachios bring a crunchy finish, and the chef does not skimp on the shaved parm. The best part of this dish is that the squash still has bite/texture...it's not that overly puréed, super sweet paste. It's real butternut squash. This place was surprisingly good! Tucked in Eagan and a distant drive from Minneapolis, we came here for Restaurant Week and I was blown away by everything we ordered. Their cocktails were the highlight of the night for me. The spicy margarita was so delicious and the martini was shaken and stirred so well with the perfect dash of the olive brine. The cheese curds were good also, especially the homemade ketchup like sauce that came with it. They have a great happy hour menu and I love that it ends at 6! For the main entree, my steak was cooked the way I ordered it - medium rare on a very tender juicy meat. It was perfectly seasoned with a great taste of umami. The mashed potatoes and asparagus were cooked and paired well with the steak. My friend's order of the trout fish tasted fresh with a good crisp up skin. Her mashed potato was maybe a little heavy handed on the salt. Overall, it was a fun night and a fantastic meal. This place was packed and lively all through a weekday night. My key lime pie was heavenly, from the crust to the perfect tartness of the filling. It came in this small cute round tin foil, which I think was a nifty idea for those who want to bring their dessert home in a to go box. What a grand finale to seal the night for me! We came in as a pretty big group so definitely grateful for their patience! We got two appetizers, Shishito peppers and spinach artichoke dip. They were both excellent. My entree was seared scallops, and boy was it good but also very very small. I didn't realize how small the portion was. I was quite disappointed, honestly I'd wish there was at least a little more even just the sides like starch, grains, or veggies... the cupcake for the dessert was just okay, the cake was pretty dry. So. Visited here in 2022. Cool enough atmosphere. If that's what makes a restaurant for you. Wife loved the Mason jar theme. Me, I can't fill up on atmosphere. The uni sex mixed bathroom is an interesting concept. Kudos for that. Food. Hmm, It was good. Too boogee for me. I want a simple omelet with crispy hashbrowns and sourdough toast. The restaurant staff, cooks, and menu planners seem to be completely tone deaf to the needs of guests who are dining with children. Making sure they are attentive to taking drink and food orders on a timely basis to keep the service moving for hungry children, making child friendly food (why would anyone think serving dinner plate sized pancakes to young diners is appropriate...serving "silver dollar" sized pancakes, with appropriate proportions is much more guest friendly) that is delicious (cooking "scrambled" eggs to the point that they taste like and are the consistency of well worn tire treads, to the point that an 8 year who loves correctly cooked, fluffy, not overcooked, scrambled eggs, can discern that they are not cooked correctly), are seriously important to the dining experience for people who have children they are feeding. Please pay better attention to your guests of all ages! read more
