Well seasoned and a huge portion. GARLIC MASHED POTATOES Creamy, well blended garlic infused perfect mashed potatoes. OMGGGGGG this was amazing an and unexpected, I wish I had extra because I love it that much. BROCCOLINI So delicious, roasted broccolini topped off with fresh Parmesan cheese. Dinner and a dining experience done right. It's often stated that first impressions are lasting impressions; if that adage is correct, Mastros made such a lasting impression on my dinner party last night! Of the eight people in attendance, six had never been to Mastro. By the end of the evening, indeed, every single one was blown away. It first started with the perfect ambiance on the main level with its rich decor and soulful sounds from the live entertainer at the piano in the bar area. The mix of contemporary tunes and timeless classics in a live performance sets this place apart. As we descended the grand staircase, we were led to a large room that easily accommodated our party. Edwin was the star of the evening as a server who was so knowledgeable about the menu that there was no question too hard to answer nor pairing suggestion too tricky to make to ensure our perfectly cooked steaks had the best tasting accouterments. Edwin was so observant that even during casual conversation, he heard me raving about the butter cake and made a mental note that was a surprise, sweet ending to the meal. The drinks were delicious and hand-crafted to provide the perfect balance to enhance the meal. What was most satisfying to see was the teamwork and responsiveness by Lobo, the server assistant who sprung into action when one of the guests accidentally spilled a cocktail; not only did he reset the table for our comfort. He also helped Edwin to ensure the guest had a fresh cocktail and kept our evening moving forward. There are many steak places in Washington, DC, and I have visited many top steak restaurants nationwide. And Mastros continually ranks at the top of the list. The steaks were fantastic. From the bone in 12-ounce fillet to the selection of Wagyu available, it is truly a stake lover's dream. I had both the 12-ounce fillet and Salmon before ordering. I was graced with the presence of Che', who stopped by to ensure that our party was enjoying the evening. I asked for a recommendation for the salmon. As I mentioned, I always have steak, and he suggested the Cajun salmon. The delicate nature blew me away that the fish was prepared and balanced seasoning for the salmon. Not only was my fish and steak cooked to perfection. I added garlic, mashed potatoes, and cream spinach to round out my meal. As I celebrated this evening with friends and family, the sweetest treat arrived: a decadent display of desserts ranging from crème brûlée cheesecake to key lime pie and the famed butter cake. It was indeed a euphoric moment. I wish I had taken more pictures of my food, but I will tell you I was so caught up in the moment that I did not want to miss out on being fully present to enjoy fantastic food, handcrafted drinks, and decadent desserts. The Crab Cakes That Ruined My Self-Control Stopped by Maestro after work around 8 PM, starving and planning to grab takeout. Walked into this dimly lit spot with sounds of piano playing on the left and a lovely woman singing. The vibe hit immediately, mid-week crowd, warm and inviting, with the bar to the left where it belongs. I ordered crab cakes and asparagus. Simple. I've been on crab cake kick for a few weeks now. I order, Paid, left, got home in about 20 minutes. My plan was noble: eat one crab cake, save the other for tomorrow. Then I took the first bite. It melted. Actually melted in my mouth. I poured the side of garlic butter over it and fell completely in love. One bite turned into two, and suddenly tomorrow's lunch was gone. Both crab cakes, demolished. No willpower, no shame. Then came the asparagus still crunchy, cooked to perfection, and huge. I've never seen asparagus that size in my life. By 9 PM, I'd eaten what was probably a meal meant for two. Amazing food and ambiance. I loved the singer they had and she was taking requests! She had a beautiful voice. On to the food...We ordered the oysters, bone in ribeye, bread basket, Caesar salad, crabcakes & we did order truffle fries however they were not available, which was a huge bummer because I really wanted those lol. The ribeye came out perfectly cooked. It also came out considerably fast probably about 15 to 20 minutes. It was absolutely delicious. It was also huge. We shared it. I rarely indulging oysters unless they Rockefeller however I decided to try for the first time here wow they were amazing 10/10 stars I am officially an oyster fan lol now onto the service the bartender was great a little slow however he was super nice. The drinks were so delicious and he definitely made our experience greater so it doesn't even matter. I will always come back here. I always have an exceptional time the staff is always so nice, definitely stop by and check it out. I'm a little sad that I missed week. We dined on blackened salmon, garlic mashed potatoes, lobster mac and cheese, and of course we finished up with their famous butter cake. Just delicious! I deducted a star because of the close quarters we were seated, that was even after making reservations. Plus, the music was too loud for the fancy image the restaurant was trying to portray to the customer. Additionally, the room was entirely too dark. Everyone loves a romantic and dimly lit room, but people were taking their phones out and using their flashlights just to view the menu. That's pretty dark. It was a wonderful experience, nonetheless. I see why they have a ton of reviews. My food was amazing, my mojito was strong, and the service was truly on point! Would I come back? Absolutely! I could go on and on about how fabulous my experience was. From them being willing to change my reservation time twice, and immediately seating us upon our arrival. The ambiance was very giving very much 'Grown & Sexy'! The lights were dimmed, white table cloths, and the servers had on white jackets. There was also live music playing as well. One word, phenomenal! I really loved my experience at Mastros. I was brought here on a surprise date. He booked this spot a week in advance. We were running late, but they gave a 15 min courtesy. This place gets booked really quickly. The service was amazing. They were on point with bringing out everything, refilling drinks, and just adding to the overall ambiance. The food was delicious! I got the filet mignon with a side of mashed taters and Mac & cheese. You can add different flavored butters to your steak. I would go light on the butter because if was a lot for my size steak. We also ordered a really good duck horn bottle of wine and they give delicious complimentary bread. My favorites was the steak and the bread pudding dessert. The mashed taters I would not order again. They had a live piano player which was really cool!! You can't hear him if you're seated in the very back of the restaurant. We lived in LA for over a decade, and Mastro's was always our go-to spot to celebrate a special occasion -- whether a landmark birthday, a beloved family member coming to town or a special anniversary. My partner and I just celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary and decided to continue our tradition from LA here in DC. It's a very different vibe than our go-to Mastro's in Beverly Hills. Not to be unexpected at all, but the vibe in DC is much stuffier. But the staff was all very friendly. I do prefer the Beverly Hills location better, with it's open-air balcony seating, lively atmosphere and over-the-top clientele and servers who are basically all wanna-be actors (or in some case those who made it big and didn't get another gig). Yeah, this is not the DC version! This dining room is much darker inside, with curtains drawn all around, and much quieter in the space. It's still an amazing meal, and the dishes were as high quality as the ones we ate in LA. It's a steakhouse so expect a very pricey meal. For us, it's a special splurge place so if you're like us and looking for a spot to celebrate in style for a special occasion, this is a great choice. read more

I would normally give them 5 stars but.... I went for my birthday celebration and the entire table was annoyed. ONE HOUR AFTER being seated, we had to ask the server to take our order. He then had the audacity to tell us to hurry up with our orders. Additionally, we had to ask for bread. My food was lukewarm and unseasoned because the server wasn't listening to me. While he was friendly (until his smart remarks), he was extremely hyper and just all over the place. Most of us have patronized the restaurant on other occasions and were disappointed at the low level service. This is suppose to be a five start restaurant but fell short. HOWEVER, my friends called the manager over and we explained our experience. He was extremely kind and attentive and assured me he would make things right because I was clearly hurt and felt my celebration was ruined. The manager had my meal made over and brought it out himself. He made sure it was prepared to my satisfaction. To top things off he brought out an incredibly beautiful platter of delicious desserts. I had to wait a while for them to get to me even though I was the only one waiting. When they finally came back out, I checked in for my party. I chose for my salmon to be well done and blackened . They surely delivered! It was literally melt in your mouth and came out HOT, just like I like it. The lobster mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned and had the right amount of sauce with it. We were both thoroughly pleased with our meals! Then, I ordered dessert for my birthday! I got a cheesecake and the butter cake. The cheesecake was really good! The butter cake was ok. I wish it was more melt in your mouth and sweeter. It wasn't what I imagined. I wanted to write this review in hopes management would see this and improve. I used to love Mastros but this place needs to train the staff. With all of the choices in DC at this price point, I would assume Mastros wanted service to stand out to keep customers. First I walked in and the front desk girls did not even greet you hello. We're sitting at a long table and the staff keeps bumping my chair all night long. My head was turned and felt extreme heat behind my ear, FYI this waiter is coming with a very hot plate but doesn't announce herself. I simple " pardon my reach " would have been great. Lastly, they kept cleaning the table of our food and were not done. Can we take our time to eat? The bread was not free, why remove half the basket. The dessert was not done, why not offer to box it up? Simple things like this make it the last place I would think of. We celebrate the holidays every year with a family dinner of 11 guests, but this will not be my choice again. The only reason I gave 2 stars was because I enjoyed my lemon drop martini. Maestro's a decent and classic American upscale steakhouse. Nothing worth hyping up. It'll serve a decent medium rare steak and all the classic sides/add-ons. I went here a few months ago and nothing from the main courses stands out - sad, especially given their prices. HOWEVER, their butter cake dessert is worth coming back for! Ordered a few takeout cakes today - spectacular. They come room temp, so fire up your oven. The ice cream, fruits and sauce come in separate containers. Downtown for a show at the Warner Theater and we lucked out with an on-street parking space 1/2 block away on F Street. Wanting some thing tasty before the show, we spied Mastro's. Since it was a Saturday, with no reservation we were skeptical that we'd get in, but we wandered in anyway. As busy as they were (no reservations; no tables all night) they did have some seats at the bar, which by the way the lounge area is a lovely center of attention with a large space for seating. The bartender/server was wonderful, making us feel very welcome and special. Since it was our first visit we were curious about the preparation of items on the menu so he took extra time to walk us through descriptions and made some great suggestions. While DEFINITELY a steak house, their seafood offerings were equally impressive. So for starters we discussed sharing their Spicy Mambo Salad-basically their house Caesar, but with a special, in-house spicy dressing made with Wasabi. While not for the heat-averse, this is a unique, and wonderful salad. We also spied their signature Bread Basket (which is the cheapest item on the menu) which sported 4 different kinds of breads, all warm and delicious as well. Extra credit goes to the bartender for asking for the salad to be split without us requesting such. Trying to be mindful of sitting at the theater, we decided to split the Chilean Sea Bass. They offer 4 ways of cooking their fish; blackened, grilled, fried or pan seared. For us a lightly seasoned pan seared the way to enjoy the flavors without being subverted by spices. For a side, their White Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese was an abundance of noodles with ample and tasty cheesiness. We almost opted for the Lobster Mac & Cheese, but that will have to come on our next visit. I should also mention the craft cocktails were also a highlight, if not a tad bit expensive. Years ago I was a young, African American woman working in streetwear as a buyer and manager with blue hair and bright eyes. Being one of the only women invited to sit amongst such trailblazers in the industry, Mastros became a place of immense pride and joy. Fast forward to tonight with my amazing and beautiful friends, celebrating the end of a fabulous year - made me feel amazing! Now for the food and decor! The decor will remind you of Ocean Prime or Ruth's Chris - lots of dark wood, white linens, suited waiters, and dim, romantic lighting. So... ABOUT THIS FOOD! The food surpassed everything I remembered. I had oysters - medium/big, crisp, with a little bit of brine and sweetness. Mastro salad with succulent shrimp and plenty to share! Lobster Mac and cheese - SAVE YOUR DAILY CALORIES FOR THIS ONE! Oh and the besttttttttt steak - New York strip - PERFECTLY juicy, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor ! Not your average run of the mill steak house that's for sure . This place is very trendy and has live music, which I didn't realize until walking out. I came here for a birthday celebration and the whole experience was outstanding. The star of course here is steak and their dry age process that is used to prime their steaks for cooking. I choose the Bone-in Ribeye. The steak cut was excellent and flawlessly cooked. It was so so tender, juicy, flavorful and cut like butter. The sides were a la carte and we ordered plenty. A highlight amongst the sides was definitely the Seafood Mac. Not the cheapest option for enjoying a good steak. There are other options around the city that I could recommend, but Mastro's was worth it and in a league of its own. This, plus the ambiance and classy service makes it worth giving Mastro's a try. *TIP: if on a budget, make this place one of your places to visit during "restaurant week!" The menu and prices are significantly lower. Just make sure you make reservations early because apparently everyone has this place earmarked on their radar for restaurant week for the very same reason. read more

1) Food Steak is not as hot as they describe. We were told the plate would be very very hot with steak sizzling, but we got our plate cold with steak just warm enough to eat. I also asked my steak to be medium rare but it turns out to be at least medium. Our neighbor asked medium well but got a medium rare. 2) ambiance Restroom is somewhat dirty, a bit smelly, and all of the hand soap is empty ! Table is also so small for our dishes. 3) Service is not good Before we decide to go, we called Mastro if they accept Laundry Select club reward because our paid plus earned rewards are about to expire. We got the answer as yes that they can use the reward but just cannot earn points through them. That's an important factor we chose Mastro within so many member restaurants to celebrate birthday. We were not told bread need extra charge by the waiter, which normally was not a chargeable item in most other steakhouses. We were also not told that birthday complimentary dessert is a set one rather than a one we pick up from the menu like most of other restaurants normally do if they do give out complimentary dessert, so we ended up with getting more than one dessert which we didn't expect at all. Anyway, waiter's communication with us should be better. 4) Overall I would think Morton and Flemings is much better than this place. read more

Great experience at mastros! Top notch service, food, and drinks. The bread to start is great. The filet and mash potatoes are to die for! I enjoyed sitting at the bar area as it was a fun vibe with the live music. read more

I have been trying to get to this place since the pandemic. Welp, I finally got there with a friend of mine. This place is NIIIIICCE!! The food is plentiful and will fill you all the way up. The staff was very attentive and on point. We didn't have to wait for anything. The atmosphere is nice and calm. I will definitely be back. The only very minor drawback is the parking in DC. But that's not their fault. You can do valet, but I didn't do that, though. We foot blessed and fou d an open spot in the street. read more
