We ended up coming twice on our trip to Anchorage and we had good experiences both times. The beers were great, the cran-apple cider was AMAZING, and the food was good each time. I got the halibut tacos my first time and they were INCREDIBLE. This isn't going to be a gourmet, Michelin star restaurant. They've done a great job filling the space left in a building that seems to never find a business that can survive. We had very slow service on a weekend when the place was about 50% capacity which disappointed me but I'll make this review about just the food. My burger was bland, overcooked, and dry (why even ask how I want it cooked if you're just gonna send it out well done?) The fries were soft and soggy. The tiny cup of ketchup supplied is not nearly enough to make the burger and fries edible. The kids didn't mind their burger but wouldn't touch the fish and chips. I could see why when I cracked one open, it's 60% breading made to look like a larger piece of fish. I didn't care for the house beers either, I've had them before and didn't like them so it was no surprise but I did find them slightly better tasting out of the tap here than in a store bought can. I won't come back here again because I don't think they care at all about making good food. Been here twice. I'd recommend this place based on the pizza and drinks. The other items not as much. The first time my husband and I went here, the pizza was pretty good. However the second time coming... My husband's white cheddar burger looked better than it tasted. It was cooked perfectly, just no seasoning whatsoever and flavorless. I went to see a lady who was performing last night and I've recently started the Keto diet. I'm familiar with Mats menu and decided on the burger no bun with salad option. Well, they did it right. All the way from no croutons to adding boiled egg to the salad. Kudos Matanuska Brewing for having your kitchen staff conscious of people's dietary needs and for taking them seriously. I really like how spacious it is and it's perfect for watching sports! They are still fixing some things on the menu so be sure to ask a server if you have any questions. When I asked my server about what's the best thing on the menu... she told me they don't get time to eat.. so I'm assuming she just hasn't tried anything. We also over heard her talking to another waiter at the table next to us about people not tipping her enough after she just came and picked up our ticket which I thought was extremely rude! As I quote " If I get another table to tip me under 6 bucks I'm gonna lose it.. what the fuck..?!". All I could think is if you learned the menu and could answer any question we actually had about it or brought out any of the food or drinks and checked on us more than one time... I'm glad we didn't tip more.. ungrateful! The King Crab here is 70 dollars which is well above other prices in Anchorage, so I would t recommend coming here is that's what you're looking for. They have a really big menu so there is plenty to choose from as well as their beer menu! We went during lunch so it was pretty mellow. Perfect for families. We order the garlic cheese bread and there was a lot more than expected! Very good price for the amount! We also got the spicy burger with a side of clam chowder and the Parmesan crusted halibut burger. I didn't think the spicy burger was spicy at all and I am a wimp about spice, so if you are someone who really enjoys spicy food I would choose something else. For everyone else.. it has really great flavor and would probably order again! The clam chowder had a ton of clams! I was pleasantly surprised! Very delicious! Gave this place one more try today. Not busy at all, bartender was having lively conversations with servers, and other employees sitting at the bar. Waited while attempting to make eye contact and start with at least a greeting for 9 minutes and left. Really sad state of affairs. He did make several drink tickets that came up while I sat waiting (next to the well) to be greeted. Beer is good but not worth being ignored while entitled staff go on and on about travel and other personal things in their life. You would think they are working off tips? Bartender walked back and forth about 20 times without even acknowledging my presence. I was even greeted by other people who I recognized in the restaurant. No dice with bartender though. I come to Matanuska Midtown regularly and I've always enjoyed their signature dish chicken and brussel sprouts. Sometimes the atmosphere left a little to be desired, but I've noticed recently, it's firing on all cylinders. I've tried some of their new menu items, all which have been great (the spicy zucchini dish is awesome) and the overall ambience has gotten much better than I've ever seen it. Staff seems happy to be there and aesthetically, the decor looks great ((axe throwing available too!!)) I have always looked at this place thought this place might actually be good. Through the night it was slowly setting in that this place is not great. I ordered my food and appetizer too. The whole point of an appetizer is to have something to eat while waiting for your main course. I was waiting forever for my starter course and it pissed me off. I was even more pissed off when I actually got the starter and it was burnt onions and I could barely find the pork in the pile of onion shit on my plate. I know somewhere else at that price would of given me a heaping pile of pork belly. Then shortly after that main course came. I had the smoke rib burger and coleslaw was just god awful watery and made my burger soggy as well. My wife had a prime rib sandwich which look like it came straight out of Arby's with the size of it. Then someone made fun of my fry basket that it looked like a basket fries for kids. Whoever was handling food kept bringing food that no one ordered. It didn't stop there. The worst part was waiting to get my empty plate out of the way and just waiting for everything. I was done with my food and it took so long for someone to come around and ask for a check. I finally got my check and then I waited forever again to give my card. Then she finally took my card and waited forever for the waiter to come back. I must of spent almost an hour trying to get the hell out of the restaurant. The audacity of forcing a gratuity for such shitty service was a big one too. Been here multiple times over the past year and finally got a chance to review it. I've seen a lot of sub-par reviews for this location, but in all my times dining here, the food and service have always been consistent and excellent. The mushroom burger and black and blue burger in particular are always delicious, and the fries are cooked perfectly. They have a nice beer selection, and their Backcountry Blue is a nice change of pace if you like fruity beers. We've never tried any of their other food items besides burgers, but if you're looking for a solid burger in midtown, I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

Visited the midtown location last night for dinner and drinks. The food was great, my server (Summer) was a total treat, and the bartender was as fun to watch work as her drinks were delicious! For the most part, it was a great evening and a fun environment. However, I had the misfortune of watching a man who I later found out was the OWNER yell at/cuss out his bartender until she was in tears and had to walk away from the bar. He was very clearly intoxicated and it was very sad to watch an employee that had been working so hard all night be treated in such a way by the very man she makes money for and helps keep in business. Shame on him. As much as I enjoyed my meal, I will not be returning, as I do not feel comfortable supporting the business of a man that doesn't treat his employees with the respect and basic decency that they deserve. I hope that bartender receives an apology and a RAISE for having the patience and self control she has to deal with someone like him. read more

I had to track down the server and she told me was no longer her section and walked away. 45 minutes later we were able to order our food and drinks. The food was typical barfood and had fantastic beers. The icing on the cake was that it took us an additional 30 minutes to get checked out. we came here to watch a football game and the food, drinks, and service were great. that wasn't the problem. What left a bitter taste in my mouth was the fact that on the merchant copy of my bill it had "taxes" listed and was charging me a fee that seemed too high. When looking at the breakdown on my customer copy, I realized that the "tax" I was paying for was actually the credit card processing fees the owner was passing along to its customers. While I don't totally agree with passing those fees at a restaurant along to patrons, I can understand it in some instances. What I didn't like was that at first glance, if not looking at the bill super closely, people may think they are paying taxes. This is a bit misleading. read more

My husband and I were frequent visitors here, usually once a week. My favorite was the Blackened Chicken Sandwich without the bun. I always ordered the Salt & Vinegar chips instead of fries because they never got the fries right. They are always soggy and tasted dirty which is a result of fryer grease not being clean or hot enough. Our visit last night was our last, they changed the menu, you cannot even read it, they eliminated the Chicken Sandwich and the chips. I ordered the buffalo wings instead and tomato soup, soup was quite good, wings were way to saucy and undercooked. My husband had fish tacos which before had cheese and this was also eliminated from this dish. Love to hang at this place for a quick brew or for a full hockey game. The beer selection is very good. My team comes here almost once a week. They have everything but Girdwood Brewing Company beers on tap (waiting for that in the future). King Street, Glacier Brewhouse, Matanuska Brewing, Deschutes, Elysium....Well, point is, plenty of good beers. Pizzas and wings are also both crazy good. I miss the poutine from the old Crossbar menu, but the food, generally has been good when I've ordered something solid. Great TVs. We watched the Caps win the Cup in this place, and we will likely host our fantasy football draft here and watch the World Series.
