Alehouses! Alehouses for everyone! A few months ago the only thing resembling an alehouse we had in this town was Humpy's. This was problematic for a few reasons: - downtown location is problematic for some (parking) - filled to the brim with tourists when the days are long - not known for its food This is in the building previously occupied by "that hockey bar" that I sadly never got to visit before it abruptly closed. I went for lunch, I got wings and a salad. Mainly because that's about all I can eat here (keto diet, I'll shuttup now) They were both pretty good. The bar area was really nicely designed and the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. A big plus for me and my stupid diet is that not only do they have wine, they have wine on tap! Multiple wines, in fact! The places seemed to be running very efficiently. Impressive for a place that is so new. Doesn't seem like there are many kinks to be worked out. Only bummer is that they don't have WiFi. I'm one of those bums that likes to get crap done before/after I eat. No WiFi means I probably won't come here as much as I'd like to. read more

Ok, disclaimer I'm giving 5 stars, but keep in mind what this place is... a family friendly sports bar/ale house. This is not fine dining. The food is well prepared, but isn't culinary genius or anything. It's gut busting portions of food meant to be shared with friends while you get faced. They've got 70, that's SEVENTY, beers on tap. Many of the beers are Alaskan, most of them the more popular ones. They have two of my personal faves, Panty Peeler and Double Shovel Cider. They also have limited quantities of more unusual beers in tap like what I tried today Wild Turkey Coconut Imperial Stout, which was smooth, flavorful, kicked my ass, and practically constituted a meal. With the stout in mind, I ordered a SIDE Thai chicken salad that turned out to be the SIZE OF MY FACE. It was tasty and slightly better than I would have expected for a sports bar. My dining companion got a bacon chicken slider thing, which he hated, but I think most people would actually like. (I knew when he ordered the dang thing he wouldn't like it.) But it had bacon, cheese and fries on it... so i think the average, not health conscious person would find it well paired with the beer of their choosing. He also order an "appetizer" of bacon cheese fries that was the SIZE of my torso that will undoubtably contribute to the SIZE of my ass. It's made with Alaska grown potatoes, and is enough food for a family of six, which substantiates the redonkulous price. So be forewarned, portions are absolutely made with sharing and/Or leftovers in mind. I personally would prefer smaller portions and better pricing... But that's pretty much my only gripe. Matanuska Brewing Anchorage resides in the home of the old Boston's Restaurant. Since Boston's closed, this building has had multiple attempts from businesses to be the new spot. Matanuska Brewing is it! We had a group of four us who went at 6:00 pm on a Wednesday and they were PACKED. Local duo Blaze & Eric were onstage singing/playing the perfect playlist for relaxing music that makes you move (great artists, might I add; I hope they return). Live music is a regularly happening here, which livens the place up moreso. I drank the Arctic Warrior beer and loved it. Although they were jam packed, service was fast and friendly. Food was fresh. We all pretty much tried each others' food and these are the conclusions we drew: 1. The beer cheese is f*ing delicious. It will be difficult for me not to become a regular over that alone. Pretzel bites with beer cheese is how we had it and all of us loved it. 2. Nobody was impressed with the fried pork belly. The picture looks amazing and it the flavor was pretty amazing too. They need to be two or three times fried, though. The texture was like tofu and I prefer it crispy. 3. The prime rib tacos are tender and fresh but the ratio of cheese vs meat was way off (see photo). 4. The blackened halibut tacos are fresh and I loved them. If you can't eat spicy at all, ask about getting it mild because they aren't. If you like to eat some spice (medium) you'll be pleasantly surprised at the kick they have. 5. Chicken and goat cheese salad is delicious and again, fresh. 6. Cocktails are strong and the beer is cold! You may be put off by the fact that the business has changed so many times but give it a try on an evening when they have music. The environment was loud when we went but isn't that what going to a brewery with live music is for? read more

Matanuska is awesome! Very cool vibe in the restaurant, good beer, and delicious food. Got the Blackened Salmon Eggs Benedict, and WOW. By far the best food I've had while I was up here in Anchorage. Here for a couple more weeks and will definitely be going back to get those eggs benedict! Also, I've been looking for a nice metal growler up here that I can sticker blast, and they've got them. 64oz growler for $40. Heck of a deal even compared to what you can find on Amazon! They sell out fast though, so you have to be quick to get em'! read more

Came in for a quick bite for lunch and left full but a little disappointed. I had a Caesar salad and a cup of the curry apple soup of the day. My food was great the salad was fresh and crisp, my soup was delightful perfect temperature and fresh. My husband got a burger with no bun and salad the patty was tiny and lacked in flavor but for the price it was fair. I'll go back for the food for a quick lunch, the service was what I was mostly disappointed in and I'll give another chance and change my review another day. I had the Prime Rib Dip sandwich at the Tiffany the bartender's suggestion: FABULOUS! The fries were perfect little nuggets of potatoes and again Tiffany brought housemate ranch for dipping. Heaven. Had the blackened halibut tacos and my wife had the pastrami pretzel sliders. We shared and were both full, so can only speak about the appetizers, and they were excellent. She had a flight from their HUGE assortment of beers, and I Had French 75s, which are not a commonly offered cocktail in most bars because you have to have champagne or sparkling wine to make them. The atmosphere was festive and live music was advertised but not happening yet. The wait staff were great, as well. Highly recommended. read more

Honestly not my favorite place, the burger that I got was the mango habanero. The only tasty part about the burger was the additions I put on it. The sauces tasted like nothing which was something I was looking forwards too since there mango. The bread just was not suited for all the juices and just completely fell apart, and frankly was not appealing. On the upside the pretzel bites and kombucha were delicious. My partners burger the white cheddar bacon burger was much better then mine. read more

This is a tough review. The waitress was excellent and the beer was the best selection we had seen in Alaska. The appetizer was excellent, but my problem was with the $32+ ribeye; it was basic, over cooked and the mixed veggies were just Brussels Sprouts? I don't know, I hate it when I make a better stake than a commercial restaurant. It's just disappointing, especially for that kind of money. All in all I want to rate this lower, but since everything else is 5 star I can't. I'd recommend coming here just don't order the steak. read more

I appreciate that Matanuska was one of the first establishments to open back in 2020 and their efforts to stay in business (heated outdoor seating in the winter!), but the latest change is a big negative. They've added Pull Tabs (at the entrance), a sitting area that holds ~20 people (but no one using), shrunk the eating / bar area that is now so crammed pack with tables you can barely move around. Definitely not an enjoyable dinner. Regarding prices, they've added a CC surcharge vs raising prices which I really appreciate, but when we paid with cash to avoid the surcharge (which is what they indicated is the case), our change came back after the surcharge! Wait staff / cashier error.....deducted from their tip. My suggestion, bring back Friday night music and drop the pull tabs. read more

Beware: our drinks on the bill were more than advertised on the menu and they'll charge you an additional 3% (undisclosed) fee on top of your total bill. They call it a credit card fee but we paid with a gift card and they still charged it. Insanity. Also, we got Moscow mules that were made with soda water even though the menu said they would be made with ginger beer. The service was nice. The food was fine for a sports bar. read more

Darn it. These guys have gone downhill. We visited again June 30 Friday as our favorite burger place was just too busy. This place wasn't however--that should have been our first clue. We got right in. Server was quick to seat us. I ordered a cheese burger with fries. Husband ordered a Mahi salad. My burger was quite dry. I checked the menu and the kitchen forgot to put the mayo on it. So we had to hunt down someone to get us mayo. Also, that evening there was a dj. The music was so loud that you couldn't have a conversation. Keep in mind that this was a 6 p.m.---not the drinking hour. We asked if the dj could turn the music down, and he did--a bit. Looking around most of the patrons were there for conversation, not the music. I found it amusing that while we were there the dj took a cell phone call and he turned the music way down to take the call. So he knew that one could not have a conversation with the music as loud as he had it. Unfortunately, this place was off that night. We'll think twice before going back. read more

Recommended by some locals so my co-worker and I gave it a try. Unfortunately it was lunch, and we were still on the clock so we couldn't sample the beer. I had a spicy burger with fries. The burger was great, not too spicy but cooked perfectly, with lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. The fries were very good, and the iced tea was very good. Meal was $16 which I find reasonable for this area. Service was excellent. Will visit again someday when I am off the clock so I can sample some of those beers. read more

Sadly, I have seen many restaurants, brew pubs, and sports bars occupy the space where Matanuska Brewing currently is occupying space in Midtown. Equally sadly, given the excellent service I have received from other locations, I expect Matanuska Brewing Co. to be the next one to pack up in this location. And it will not be because of the excellent service provided by the bartendress tonight. I wish I had her name to thank her in writing. Great beer, OK food. Instead, the issue lies with a cultural atmosphere I suspect is trickled down from management. We asked the hostess if the 'bar was open seating?' The answer was 'yes.' And so, we went into the bar which had plentiful seating and sat ourselves at a high top. My spouse was just readying himself to walk up to the bar to order, when a rather snippity hostess said we could not sit there, that only the 'bar itself' was considered 'bar seating.' Otherwise we had to wait 30 minutes for a 'seat.' She did not help us find one. We had to ask a couple to move over a seat to gain a pair of seats, but we squeezed in, and ordered two beers and an Hor d' oeuvre. And as I said, the bartender provided incredible service. We tipped her well for this. On the way out, I asked for a manager (my mistake) to comment on the hostess's behavior. And this is when I found out that the reason the restaurant had so many empty seats was not just the hostess but was at least partially the manager's fault. She was snarky and unpleasant, ready with an answer, while not really listening to the complaint. She offered a gift card, and when I turned that down, and repeated what I actually wanted (more training for the hostess) she said, "Do you think I am stupid?" Silence is the better part of valor which is why I did not state the obvious. I own a business, and I am sure both of us are glad that she is not my employee. But I suspect she will not be an employee of Matanuska Brewing Co. Midtown much longer either, because if they do not court repeat customers, they will be out of business. PS: the food was only OK, so the stars are for the great bartender and the epic beer. read more

This is my favorite spot to watch the game with the boys every week! We all look forward to seeing Charisma! She keeps the energy high and light, her name sure does do her justice, she is awesome as a server but it's super awesome to see how talented she is at her job overall. The way she can serve while doing manager duties and run around the restaurant and help other servers is impressive. She seems like she can do it all without even batting an eye. Disappointing. It was our first time coming here and although are expectations were not high we left feeling dissatisfied. We came close to opening so there was no wait, walked in and got seated quickly. As soon as I sat down I noticed the glass cup had a lipstick stain on it. Our waitress was nice and patient as we looked over the menu. They're pretty pricey for subpar food. I had the loaded chicken in the keto menu and I barely ate it. We also had the pepperoni pizza -Nothing fantastic. Overall it was not worth it. Won't be returning. read more

I was really craving a burger and a drink so I drove to Matanuska Brewing on a Saturday after a long hike. I sat down and made my food and drink choices and then waited...service was not the fastest, and I was about 1 of 20 people tops. I ended up getting up and asking the bartender for my food and a drink, and he was super sweet and obliged. All was well from there, cheddar bacon burger was pretty good and I had the adult cream soda which was fun. I'd say get the burger a little pink because I asked for medium and it was well done. Still good but a little dry. Overall ok experience, I like drinking their beer at home, and maybe I'll door-dash next time. read more

Got the bill for our meal. The receipt stated taxes $1.97. I asked our waitress what are the taxes since Anchorage does not have a sales tax. She told me it's the credit card fee. I told her why didn't she tell me when I gave her our card. She said it's posted somewhere up front. I did not pay this fee. My question is why doesn't the receipt actually state credit card fee? With all the tourism in Anchorage, tourists probably don't have a clue that Anchorage does not have a sales tax. Very deceptive as far as I'm concerned. read more

After reading a number of reviews on this place, I decided to come down here to catch Monday Night Football. Anchorage Alehouse is located at the old Crossbar building behind Arby's on C St. between Northern Lights and Benson. The place was packed when I came in but I was able to get a decent seat at the bar in front of one of the large flatscreen TVs. The bar special that night was 16oz. Bud Lights on tap for $3.50. A great deal while watching football. The bar manager behind the counter was very friendly and engaged in a little small talk before I placed my order just in time for kickoff. I decided to start off with their Buffalo Wings. The wings were served unbelievably fast since it seemed I just placed the order a couple of minutes before it arrived. However, this is where I decided to go with two stars rather than three in spite of the friendly employees and lively atmosphere. The plate had 10 small wings along with a cup of blue cheese and celery. The wings were crispy but they were lukewarm with chunks of blue cheese sprinkled all over the wings. The bits of blue cheese did little to enhance the buffalo sauce which was hardly spicy and had very little flavor. At $15.00, this was unbelievably overpriced for an appetizer. Around halftime, I decided to try a bowl of their French Onion Soup, a reliable favorite for me at a lot of sports bars. The soup was a lot better and absolutely delicious with a flavorful broth of onions and bits of bread topped with a thick layer of two cheeses: mozzarella and provolone. Again, the issue here was the price....$9.00 (!!!) for a small bowl. I would consider it reasonable if it was lowered down to $6.00 or $6.50 at the most. There are plenty of other restaurants that would give you hearty portions for prices like that, maybe even less. $15.00 shouldn't be considered as a price for a single appetizer unless it is a sample platter of other items. By the time the game was over, my bill ended up to be $27.50 total. That is way too much for the small meal that I had. The real stars here has to be the drinks available on tap. They have a wide variety of IPAs, Guinness, and local offerings from the Glacier Brewhouse as well as the Double Shovel Cider Company. This place is better to have a drink with friends and to catch a game but eating here is a different story. Almost all the burgers are priced at $15.00 or more with the highest at $19.00 for a Philly Burger! Best to spend your hard-earned money elsewhere if you're hungry. read more

This place is literally right across the street from where I work, walking distance. It has a nice atmosphere for a sports bar but I haven't been here to watch a game before but I'll definitely come by to watch one. For lunch I ordered the mushroom burger and my boss got the BBQ blue cheese burger. Very odd when they told us that they ran out of burger buns...it was early in the afternoon. Our server was very nice and apologized for the burger bun inconvenience haha. But we still ordered our burgers with a hoagie bun instead...it was pretty good but of course still prefer the burger bun for a burger. This is actually my second time coming here and I really liked their burger so I wanted to get it again this time around. Last time their fries were very salty and it's still very salty and they over cooked their fries....it was kinda hard to eat cause some of my fries were burnt. I tried some of my boss' fries cause some of hers weren't burnt and it was good. They also have a large selection of beers! My husband , 4 year old daughter and I ate here for a late Sunday afternoon lunch, the wait wasnt long, and we were able to get a bar booth with no wait. We were super stoked to try this place, as they opened up earlier this week, and were slammed Friday night when we drove by. It's set up very much like a sports bar/restaurant and have lots of local brewery paraphernalia around. The booth was comfy, and the TV's weren't too loud. Our waitress was top notch! I carry crayons at all times for our four year old, but for some reason had no paper. As she heard me explaining this to my daughter she went and got us a few sheets of printer paper to keep her entertained. She was attentive but not overbearing, and made sure our beers never ran dry. Being from the east coast I really like my Philly Steaks, and so I ordered one with fries, my husband had the black and Blue Burger with fries, and our daughter had 'chips and cheese' (nachos with melted cheese.) My philly steak was definitely more of a french dip kind of sandwich. It was super dry and difficult to eat on such a small ciabatta bun, but with the french dip au jus sauce they provided (which was odd for a philly) it was moist enough - just not what I had expected. My husband reported that his burger was good, but not stellar. The real main issue we had (beside my sandwich not really being a philly) was the fries. They were limp, soggy, and just all around felt under-cooked. It almost seemed of the second fry hadn't been hot enough to crisp them up. I figured some malt vinegar would help spruce them up (since they would go a bit limp anyway) but our waitress reported they did not have any. My guess is that this was due to how new they are, but still a disappointment. The one thing that really did hit home with us, and will cause us to be back to this place despite the mediocre food is the beer list! Holy cow what a list! They had everything and anything you could need! I had a Double Shovel cider followed by a red ale, my husband tried three different IPA's of their list of more that 20 IPA's alone! Overall we will visit again, and I hope the food quality improves, and that their beer list stays as awesome as it is! I'll be back to adjust my ranking if it does. If I could I would give this place ZERO stars. My coworker had nothing but good things to say about this place. So we decided to give it a try. My boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy. I ordered the small house ceasar salad and a cup of french onion soup. Let's start with the biscuits and gravy. It came out and looked like sour lumpy milk on stale biscuits. My boyfriend said it smelled gross and didn't even attempt to eat them. My lettuce in my salad was limp and had NO dressing. Only ate like a bite or two. The "cup" of soup was not even a cup and it was mostly bread, very little broth. Needless to say we both left very hungry. I would not recommend this place to anyone read more

Music was a nice level atmosphere is really cool and they have 70 beers on tap, yes 70. plus they have an awesome root beer non-alcoholic perfect for me. Matanuska Brewing Anchorage is located in a large Midtown building that has been occupied by many previous establishments. They used to have an awesome stage for live performances. Visited Sept. 2021 and they now have some golf simulators instead. Lots of large flat screens around still. All staff we've encountered previously have been attentive and efficient. Service today was super slow but friendly. Vibe was different than previous visits. I always get the blackened halibut Caesar salad. It is usually large, yummy, and satisfying. Today it wasn't any of those things. My spouse got the spicy chicken burger and it was okay. It, as well as the handful of fries it came with, looked sad from my point of view. My brew of choice here is usually the "Backcountry Blue Ale." I also like their "Magnitude 9.2 double citrus" and their "Snow Bike White." All 3 of these I've been able to find at my local liquor store and have enjoyed them during summer get togethers. This visit, I settled for a Matanuska mimosa with Wild Pineapple Cider. They were out of advertised brews + ciders we wanted to try this visit. Overall, I wish we would've gone elsewhere for lunch. read more

Guy that brought us drinks spilled one on the table, didn't apologize, didn't offer a new drink, just walked away and came back and left a stack of napkins. Bad bad energy, no eye contact no smile, no clue. Food: I'll update this later after I eat. Not happy right now. Ok we ate four different meals, nobody finished. Great new restaurant in midtown. Came in a couple of times for food and was pleased with each item I ordered. I hope this place makes it since it's a better idea than Boston's and The Crossbar. I like that this place tried to serve local produce and the beer options abound. I had mixed experiences between servers, from attentive and enthusiastic to slow and uninspired. Good food and beer though. I like this place and will look forward to coming again. One thing I didn't know is that there is an annual beer festival in Nome, or so says the couple of posters I saw on the wall. Think I may have to head that way some time. read more
