Instead of apologizing they also delete their google bad reviews!!! So here I go again: Terrible experience with the kitchen staff. I kindly ordered a meatball pizza without bacon, specifying this twice. My family and I sat in the booth next to the kitchen. I was enjoying the place until I overheard a kitchen staff member saying in Spanish, "This pizza has no bacon, right?" The staff member in charge of the toppings repeatedly denied adding bacon, even after being questioned more than four times by the same employee. Then, he "mumbled" to another coworker, who was cleaning, that the pizza did indeed have bacon and that he was just going to "simply remove it," followed by some laughter, as if that really changed anything. Unfortunately for them, I am a Mexican Muslim, and I fully understood the conversation, including the slang. Knowing the pizza still had bacon after being baked, they only removed it from the corners of the pizza (????) and, consciously knowing it wasn't a mistake, sent it out to our table with plenty of crunchy bacon. The topping guy left the area, of course. Since I had overheard the entire exchange, I checked the pizza, and sure enough, it had crispy bacon. I kindly asked the waitress to show me the menu, hoping maybe the "meatball pizza" included some "crispy peppers" or something, trying to convince myself that I had misheard. She then explained that the crispy topping was indeed bacon. She apologized sincerely and offered to have a new pizza made, which I accepted, understanding that mistakes happen. However, the truly insulting part was that the Spanish-speaking kitchen staff continued mocking and gossiping about remaking the pizza "with no bacon." A lady wearing a hat in the kitchen said to the cooks, "A ustedes les vale madre, ¿verdad?" which translates to, "You don't give a f***, do you?" All while laughing, as if my simple request--a request that I am paying for--was some kind of joke to them. I definitely didn't want to consume anything made by kitchen staff who couldn't grasp the magnitude of the situation. And that's what makes this even more infuriating. I'm paying for a service. This isn't a favor, this isn't something I'm begging for--it's a basic, paying customer's request. I am here, in good faith, paying for food that should respect my dietary needs and beliefs, only to be openly mocked. It's like serving a child with a deadly peanut allergy a meal loaded with peanuts, knowing full well what you're doing, and then thinking it's enough to just scrape them off the plate. The next thing you know, an ambulance is rushing the child to the hospital, and the parents are filing a lawsuit for gross negligence. The difference here is, instead of an EpiPen and a hospital trip, it was about my religious beliefs being completely disregarded. This wasn't a simple mistake--it was a conscious decision to mock and ignore a paying customer's request. And the worst part? They did it with a smile and a laugh. One word: Brunchbox!! - aka unlimited brunch tapas from your neighborhood pizza joint. I finally had a chance to try out brunch here with a few girlfriends this weekend and it was fabulous! We sat outside (seating is limited and fills up quickly on nice afternoons so keep that in mind) and enjoyed a leisurely two hour brunch for four. We probably could have stayed longer so plan accordingly. Food: Chilaquiles (breakfast nachos) - best item on the menu by far. Spicy, smokey, cheesy, crunchy, salty and delicious. Do yourself a favor and order one for everyone at the table so you don't have to share! Arancini - fried risotto, mozz cheese and tomato sauce. I was expecting more flavor, especially from the sauce but it fell flat. Good dish, just not great. I wouldn't waste my calories here next time around. Chicken + waffles - the chicken was the star -crisp and juicy, I could have eaten it without the waffle and been just as happy. The waffle was fine but lacked anything to wow me. I think they could have kicked it up a notch with some hot honey syrup or by adding sugar crystals to the waffle to really make the dish shine. Shrimp + Grits - yum! Even if you're not a grits fan you need to give this dish a chance. The creamy grits alone are worth ordering again. Avocado toast - I didn't have a chance to try this one but the other girls seemed to enjoy it! The presentation was lacking and could use a little sprucing up - a blistered tomato or some finishing salt never hurt anything. Mini burgers - I was sad to see the mini burgers didn't come with the onion straws piled on top. It was a bit deflating when you've ordered them previously just to see two small burgers on a plate next to a small side of onion straws. #wompwomp. The flavor however was still tasty. Mini walk of shame burrito - I had high hopes for this burrito after eating the chilaquiles but I have to say this was my least favorite item on the day. Tasteless and all one note. Don't waste any calories here if you can help it. Cast iron cinnamon rolls - super cute cast iron with delicious gooey and sweet cinnamon rolls. To share or not to share...depends on how much you like your company! Lemon pound cake French toast - not sure how this was French toast, but it was still tasty. The lemon is definitely a predominate flavor. The blackberry drizzle adds a nice tartness to the dish and the strawberries help lighten it up. This is definitely one dish you should share because it's SUPER sweet. Biscuits with honey butter and jalapeño jelly - good but not great also. Comes with three mini biscuits and two little ramekins of butter and jelly. I had half of a biscuit and some jelly but that was enough for me. Nothing really to write home about. Pizza - we tried a few pizzas as well (why the heck not - it's unlimited right?!). We had half a brunch half meatball on one pizza and half pepperoni, half margherita. The service and food were great and the company was even better. However, the price ($31.50 pp, plus $3 per brunch drink) is a bit steep if you don't come with a big appetite! Cheers!! read more

Chicken pesto pizza was way too salty for me. Their mini burgers are very good and onion straws are perfectly fried, very crispy. Friendly service but very slow. The waiter on the other hand could have been a little more attentive. It was not very busy at all. However, I would definitely come back for their mini burgers and onion straws. Are here for the first time this afternoon. They have a happy hour from 3-6PM on drinks and pizza I believe. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip with chips as well as the chicken fettuccini. I came last night right after happy hour with a friend. Let me just say, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of where they chose to seat us- by the water station and dirty pizza dishes. There was a very persistent gnat circling our food. But I digress. We ordered the Chicken Pesto Pizza and Miso Salmon. When I tell you we were both pleasantly surprised by how delicious our meals were. We'd heard mixed reviews about the place so we weren't sure what we were gonna get. But yeah, the salmon and rice combo, with the miso sauce was amazing. And the pesto on my pizza... wow. What a train wreck of an experience. We had lunch reservations yet the first table they tried to seat us at (in the not even half full restaurant) was the table closest to the kitchen. They did accommodate placing us in a better location but seemed annoyed. Things went downhill from there. They used to have cinnamon buns that came out in a cast iron skillet for the table to share. The waiter suggested the sharing cinnamon roll so we got that. A few minutes later a busby dropped of a single XL size cinnamon roll - yep just 1. I understand that restaurants change things but this was definitely not a reasonable sharing size for 4 adults and no way to easily share it since it's a single cinnamon roll. I actually asked if they were sure they brought us the right thing. The waiter serverly effed up our order by replacing all the eggs Benedict poached eggs with over easy eggs. She insisted we had to specify how we wanted them poached. When the order came out we all had fried eggs on our eggs Benedict. She then argued with me about whether or not the eggs actually were poached and I had to get a manager involved to fix our food order. Overall the food was very bland and nothing special. In addition to the food issues nobody cleared any used plates from our table, they did not bring us water, and they didn't offer refills on any drinks without us proactively flagging someone down. They did give us a small discount for the food situation but overall I won't be back and definitely would not recommend them to anyone else. As for ambiance - despite it being father's day and the restaurant having mostly families there they had no crayons for the kids (go buy a box at Target) and the vibe was much more sports bar than family brunch. The music was too loud, the TVs were tuned to sports (good) and Law and Order SVU (weird and not appropriate for small eyes). Sadly, we won't be back, and recommend you keep walking too. read more

Dropped by this restaurant/bar for the first time with my friend. Got a couple of drinks at the bar waiting to get seated at JINYA, actually. Ordered a Mule drink which was pretty good! Got a chance to chill for a bit before leaving for dinner. Received great customer service from our waitress and we had a good time, albeit a short one. But I think I'll be back sometime. Mosaic District is a cool spot! Always have a good time going to a Matchbox restaurant. Have been to a couple around the DMV area and the food has been tasty. Has a beautiful outdoor setting! Indoor or outdoor seating is available. I came here on a random Wednesday with a friend I was catching up with. They sat us down quickly which was great, we went around 1-2pm ish and there wasn't a big crowd or anything. The chicken and waffles were so good! 10/10! The drinks could have been a little stronger but we gave them an 8/10. Our server was great but we wished he would have come around to check on us a little more. Overall, the experience was an 8/10 for me and I would definitely come back!! Since it's in Mosaic there are a ton of other stores and things to do there from Muse paint bar to Target! I checked out this place while visiting in VA. We had a big party of 14 people. So the waiter automatically gets 20% tip. I think because of that we got subpar service. When you know you're getting a nice tip why put in the effort. So sad. Second, is it me or is the price of food getting more expensive and the portion are getting smaller? I've been to matchbox before. This is moreso a review of my experience with a particular dish last night. I ordered the Crab Cakes... for $32. It was advertised as "two jumbo Crab cakes, a side of old Bay fries, and Cole slaw". What I received looked more like a jumbo order of fries, two regular Crab cakes, and a side of Cole slaw. I also had stomach pains all night into this morning after eating them. I understand you can't give everyone huge Crab cakes, I do, but if that's the case just reduce the price and let people know what they're really getting. I didn't get $32 worth of food, and I feel bamboozled (and maybe mildly food poisoned? IDK). Otherwise, the service was decent and whatnot. But the value and quality of the food I received were questionable at best. The fries were a tad unseasoned as well. The bar was ok the service was good but the two stars is the food. First time in and I was here for a friend's birthday. I will start with the good. Love Matchbox as I've been to other locations and have loved them. I think the atmosphere is really nice, hustle and bustle without it being too loud. They're able to accommodate larger parties too which is always nice. Showed up a little late, everyone's food came out shortly and no server asked if I wanted a drink, or food, which was a bit annoying. Following, no server returned to the table after bringing the food so I was never able to get anything. Pretty disappointed that no servers were checking in on us considering we were a large party. We went on a Wednesday night, and the service was pretty terrible. First the waitress spilled a glass of Rosé all over the table (which we don't really fault her for, but my friend thinks it damaged her phone). The pizza at Matchbox is always great. I prefer thicker crust pizzas, but the thin crust pizzas here are cooked perfectly and not soggy. I especially love the mushroom pizza with cremini mushrooms. Very fresh, tasty, and plenty of toppings. We also had the buffalo wings. The skin was not as crunchy as I hoped. We came here during happy hour and the restaurant was pretty empty. Our server was attentive and checked on us a lot. Maybe a little too much. The staff were all very friendly and smiley. Before leaving, don't forget to pick up a box of matches. The food is yummy and the service is exceptional. We went for their Sunday brunch, but since I'm allergic to gluten, their brunchy-breakfast food menu was not an option. They did have a separate menu for their gluten free options. I ended up having the Roasted salmon + spinach salad (the name is what it is). My boyfriend had the Matchbox skillet. It was scrambled eggs, cheese, and veggies served in a petite skillet. We both mentioned that our food was tasty. The younger person at the table had the children's French toast. It was presented in a really fun way: served as a face and it was really cute. It was made using lemon-flavored bread. For adults, this would be a plus, for a kid, not so much. When she added maple syrup, it made things worse. But, this is where the great service kicked in. As it happened, the light bulb burned out as we were sitting at table. The manager (Daniel) stopped by to explain that they had noticed, but would like to wait until after our lunch so that it would be more convenient for us. Daniel also asked how we were enjoying our food. We mentioned that although we were enjoying our food, the kid's menu item wasn't enjoyable for a kid. He asked if there was anything else on the menu she would like to try instead. He asked her many questions and they came up with a veggie plate (off the menu) that he said that she could order on our next visit too. Not only did he care that the adults were happy. Not sure what the problem is but this restaurant needs help. I partly blame myself because it happened once and I went back again... There should not be any take out option because your food will be cold 45 minutes later when they quote "10-15 max". It also makes zero sense why we have to communicate through the host/ hostesses when making our pizza isn't even their job. Honestly feel bad for them. Its ingredients were horrendous and it was undercooked to the point it was cold. The fries I ordered(medium, cost $8) were average size fries... that were undercooked, and there were only 9(NINE) fries. Almost a dollar a fry? This place is located right in the heart of mosaic district, next to Angelika. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating and take online reservations. This place does serve alcohol; beers, wines and cocktails. We noticed a lot of vegetarian options in every single category which is hard to find and started off with arrancini as the appetizer. It's basically fried rissotto balls topped with grated mozzarella and chunky tomato sauce. Although, you can never go wrong with tomato and basil, the risotto stuffing lacked flavor in general. We were there to try their famous wood fired pizzas and tried Fire + Smoke Pizza and Artichoke Pesto Pizza. The Fire and Smoke one was spicy but not super spicy as they claim it to be, your ears won't blow out with smoke trust us! The artichoke pesto has mild burnt garlic flavor which went really well with artichoke.
