Haven't been here in years. Came for 38$ brunch. Left disappointed. Pizza ovens have been broken for months and will not be fixed. So a good chunk of the menu is unavailable. They should charge less if they're not going to offer the entire menu. 25$ for unlimited alcohol. But with how slow they refill water I'm sure they'd refill alcohol even slower. The weekend DJ made the experience even more unbearable. The heavy bass is a deterrent and a good tactic by management to get tables bussed away faster than the 2 hour limit. Service was slow. Didn't seem like they knew what they were doing. Took multiple people for one task. Shrimp didnt have shells but there was still the tail bit at the end attached. The waffles had a wide range of odd toppings. There were plenty of taco shells out for the taco bar. Cotton candy took a while. They don't have the machine on until someone asks. Highly disappointed at the service and appetizers. However, cauliflower pizza was great. First, seated 5 people at a table for 4-even with a reservation in OpenTable. Very tight even though there were larger tables available. Muscle appetizer came to table with a handful of mini muscles--horrible quality and asked manager about quality. Manager ans exec chef agreed on poor quality and took them away--and off the bill. We didn't eat one. Cauliflower pizza was great, and why we came in. This place is located right in the heart of mosaic district, next to Angelika. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating and take online reservations. This place does serve alcohol; beers, wines and cocktails. We noticed a lot of vegetarian options in every single category which is hard to find and started off with arrancini as the appetizer. It's basically fried rissotto balls topped with grated mozzarella and chunky tomato sauce. Although, you can never go wrong with tomato and basil, the risotto stuffing lacked flavor in general. We were there to try their famous wood fired pizzas and tried Fire + Smoke Pizza and Artichoke Pesto Pizza. The Fire and Smoke one was spicy but not super spicy as they claim it to be, your ears won't blow out with smoke trust us! The artichoke pesto has mild burnt garlic flavor which went really well with artichoke. Matchbox is great for pizza and sliders but did you know that it was the perfect location for children's birthday parties? Christiane V recently invited my daughter and a gaggle of toddlers to celebrate her son's third birthday party here and we had so much fun! We were set in a private space in the back of the restaurant where we got to meet the chef, roll out our own dough, and then top our pizza to our hearts desire. I've never seen our children so attentive and engaged before! After we made our pizzas we got a chance to tour the kitchen which was also a treat as well. It was like being in a real-life Mr. Rogers Neighorhood special! Ever since we attended the party my daughter has requested to make pizza every night so I know it made a huge impact on her little growing brain! I was just a guest so I don't know how difficult it was to plan the event with the staff but we had a great time -- and it was really cool to be a part of something different from the regular toddler party circuit. Went to Merrifield for some dinner on a weekend and had no luck trying to get a table for 5 without a reservation until we walked into Matchbox. This should have been a warning sign but we were just happy to get a table after striking out so many times. We were seated in some weird cubby in the middle of the restaurant which looks neat but has terrible acoustics, making it hard to have any conversations without speaking loudly. We all ordered but a few minutes later, we're told that they were out of something pretty common so had to do a change. We all got our dishes but we're already missing sauce sauce on the side for my sister. When she finally got it after asking again, we found an old fry stuck in the sauce. Matchbox is always an oldie but a goodie in mosaic. I think this was one of the few times I came during a lunch rush though. We got seated immediately with a party of 4 and our server came to us asking for our orders right as we sat down which was a little unusual. We asked for a couple of minutes to look at the menu but she didn't come back to us for at least 10 (totally understandable during a rush). She ended up forgetting a couple of things we asked for but no biggie, she was overall super sweet. I will caution margarita lovers that their shit is S T R O N G. Like you can smell the tequila before it reaches your table. I asked for some sprite to tame it down but unfortunately, that couldn't even save it. I work nearby so my coworkers and I always find ourselves at Matchbox for happy hour! I agree with the other reviews that their menu can be pretty pricey and even during HH it may not seem like too much of a discount. But the portions are full-sized and I think their food is delicious! Drink-wise, I suggest their seasonal sangria and the patio pounder lemonade. Food-wise, the spinach artichoke dip and their mini burgers are A1. Of course I can't forget about their pizzas! I love that you can get half/half pizzas and that way you can try more of their options. I wouldn't recommend the calamari though. It was too battered and oily for my taste.... but give it a try if you want to decide for yourself. read more

I personally like the Fried Chicken Cobb Salad- A filling salad that doesn't feel too healthy, and not too unhealthy. Portion sizes are generous, and everything feels balanced in terms of ingredients. The pizza is also decent- standard fare that holds up to its name: Matchbox, if nothing, is consistent. Kudos to the staff for keeping the restaurant clean I during the ongoing pandemic. We devided to sit outdoors to maintain social distancing even after the lockdown is lifted. The restaurant has a face mask policy for customers which I think is helpful. There is a wait to be seated, especially outdoors, because the staff cleans the tables after the previous customers leave. They also provide disposable menus so that they can be discarded after use rather than having one menu for all. I love Matchbox for their Nashville hot crispy chicken with the deviled eggs. Everything is always on point and every bite is a delight. The sweet tea helps with the heat of the sauce. We also saved some space for the donuts with the chocolate and raspberry sauce. On a cold rainy Saturday evening, my wife and I popped into Matchbox hoping to not have the typical long wait. Fat chance. The wait was 50 minutes for a party of two a little before 6pm. Oh well, there was a nearby store we had planned to visit after dinner so we called an audible, grabbed our pager and went shopping. Upon our return and with a brief wait, we were seated near the bar and ordering our drinks. I got the usual IPA and my wife a Yuengling from a decent list of beer options. We strayed from their tried and true pizza with my wife ordering a calzone and me the crispy chicken dinner. Our food came out in a reasonable time frame (much shorter than the initial wait for a table) piping hot and fresh looking. My wife loved her calzone and paired it with a side salad. She had no trouble finishing it off. My crispy chicken was oven roasted for a good bit before being finished off in a fryer. It was very yummy and maybe not too caloric being unbreaded. It came with chunky size asparagus and smashed Yukon potatoes that were both enjoyable. I showed some restraint and took half home although it was not nearly as delicious the following day. We often visit Matchbox whenever we're in town and have always been pleased. We came in for dinner late Saturday night. This particular location is located in the Mosaic district, and is typically busy. We were told that a table would take some time to be available but we could help ourselves to a table in the bar area which we did. We might as well should've waited for a table in the dining room section because a server didn't come to our table until after 10 minutes or so, when we flagged the bartender to ask if we were to order through him or wait till someone comes. He apologized and got someone to our table after a few minutes. We started off with the crab and avocado appetizer which was delicious, but didn't expect it to have so little crab: a spoonful to be exact. I wasn't too hungry so I stuck to the appetizers menu and ordered the 3 mini burgers. Also enjoyable but they really did smother my dish full of onion straws. I've been here a few times and I like the consistency and the quick service that they provide here. They close pretty late and I am glad that they still treat the late night eaters politely as I usually come here around 9:30-10:00pm to have dinner. Many restaurants will try and rush the diners out because they want to close up, but I am happy they let us stay whilst they were closing up the restaurant. This has happened a few times and I am appreciative that this place cares so much about the diner's experience. We have ordered the Spinach & Artichoke Dip a bunch of times and it's my one friend's favourite out of all the other restaurants we dine. I love the bread that it used to be served with; therefore I always ask for bread instead of the tortilla chips that its served with now. But the dip is always the perfect blend of cheese, creamy, artichoke, & spinach. I have ordered the pizzas here and I actually don't like their pizza that much. The crust is way too thin and I think it's just okay for what you get. The pizzas have nothing special or wow about them. I actually prefer mixing a few apps and starters and making a meal that way. I also really like the portions that they give here and the drinks. All in all, it's a clean restaurant, with a swift friendly staff, and good food. Came here the other night for a birthday treat, and boy did they deliver! The happy hour was extended til 9pm with the larget cucumber gin and tonic I've ever seen. It was delicious. The waitress took my complicated pizza order without blinking and remembered all of it without even writing it down. The pizza here is so delicious, I ate most it all by myself! I have enjoyed eating at several of the Matchbox locations in the area. This one is one of my favorites. The food and drink is awesome. And the location is perfect in the Mosaic District which offers several restaurant options, shopping, and entertainment (Angelika Move Theater). Beginning with the food, I almost always go for a pizza. And I was fortunate enough recently to try one of their seasonal versions which I LOVED. The South of the Border pizza was fantastic (which includes the ingredients of a chicken fajita). Yum! I hope that add that one to the regular menu. As another food option, the 369 sliders are a great choice. As the name describer, you can get them in groups of 3 ... and they are always topped off with a large bunch of shoestring onion rings. The drinks are great as well. Whether you are hankering for a cocktail or one the many beers on tap, you cannot go wrong. It seems like we are always on the search for a good, regular pizza place, so we tried Matchbox. Honestly, I waivered between 2 and 3 starts since 3 is "ok", but 2 is "I've experienced better" and we will likely not return so it is 2 for us. Nothing horrible, but we can't tout it as great or even suggest it for others. Service was friendly. I did run out of water though. Also, I do have one nit which really isn't a huge deal but annoying all the same addressed below. It takes a lot of words to explain and not terribly relevant, but it's below the review. The food was fine. I mean it was all edible. We had the pear salad which is probably the strongest course. We had one large meat pizza (pepperoni, sausage, etc with no cheese) and one small chicken pesto. I did find the chicken pesto pizza far too greasy and the meat pizza was not too greasy, but it was not especially flavorful until we doctored it with pepper flakes. Once again, we ate everything, so not horrible, but not great and certanly not repeatable. The total price for a 9 oz glass of wine, large pizza, small pizza, pear salad, and two softdrinks with tax and 15+% tip was $91.00. This felt a little heavy in price when balanced with the food quality and service. ----------------- My one nit with service which leaves a bad taste in my mouth ( uh...yeah...) is that when we were welcomed our server asked if this was our first time. It was, so we get a free appetizer of arancini. However, the waiter then realized the latose intolerance issue and suggested free dessert. OK, this sounds nice. I thought it was a nice touch, but at the end of the meal the server advises all the desserts have dairy, so we weren't getting anything. Granted, we are no worse for wear because we expected nothing when we made the reservation, but the whole thing was communicated in a ham handed way. This is the first visit to this Matchbox location. We had patio seating which was nice. I ordered the special, seared scallops over cream corn with mushrooms...excellent. Service, however, was not. Our server was very pleasant but horrible!!!!! She would disappear for extended periods of time. We literally had to give our order to the gentleman who I thought was originally supposed to serve our table. The only thing she actually brought us without prompting was our waters. We had to ask for my husband's salad after signaling her over, same for ketchup and same for the check. Like come on!!!! Also, went to the restroom and out of the two stalls, one has no lock. Went in the one with the lock only to realize it had no toilet paper...after the fact. Oh and don't get the fried fish. Lots of breading and they smelled really fishy after first bite. Fried chicken Cobb salad and fried chicken sandwich are the two best items on the menu. Unfortunately, I decided to try different items this time. Spicy meatball pizza- not impressive. Crust was so hard it was inedible, and the only flavor came from the rare bit of bacon. I felt that it was missing some type of vegetable to balance it out. I've never tasted a Caesar salad so flavorless. It's as if the dressing was diluted, and I could barely detect Parmesan. The lettuce was also not very crisp- "wilted" as described by one member of my party. The other dishes were so-so, and all overpriced.
