The entire experience was pleasant. Bojin communicated well and was prompt with her responses. I drove about 1 hour to get to the studio, and it was well worth it. Upon arriving: The parking is secure and the building has an artsy feel. I was greeted nicely, and got started. The studio has amazing views, which makes it nice. I had to reschedule my appointment with Sam three times and both she and the staff were incredibly understanding and flexible. I felt so welcome and well taken care of while I was there. My privacy was well respected and I was made as comfortable as possible. Hygiene is a top priority and the space reflects that. I was ignorant and used numbing cream beforehand unknowingly making her life so much harder but she worked around it and poured hard work into my tattoo regardless. I am so in love with my tattoo! I trusted the process with Sam and she did not disappoint. I am forever grateful that I have found this studio and Sam. I had reached out to Sam back in early 2022, when the studio was located close to the Arts District in LA, for my first piece from her and she was able to get me in within the month! I pitched my idea and she somehow brought it to life, red spider lilies and a snake. After that session, I knew I wanted Sam to do my entire arm moving forward. I booked a consultation with her and pitched multiple ideas. Everything from different flowers, skeletons, insects, plants, and even adding an Ewok since Star Wars is very special to my fiancé and I. Of course she was much busy this time around (normally what happens when you're AMAZING at your job!) and due to it being a full flowing sleeve, we booked my appointments in advance. Anytime I would reach out to Sam or anyone in the Mateo Studio team, I would receive immediate responses. Any questions or concerns? Didn't have that here! Since the first session, Sam made sure I was always comfortable, relaxed, and constantly checking in. She even fed me in my third session! Haha! I am absolutely obsessed with my tattoos! The studio is super bright and cute and located in the arts district area; big plus there is a parking lot! Sarah is super sweet and intentional with her work. The first tattoo she did for me was my very first tattoo ever - I got a butterfly. I always get compliments on it and the color is super vibrant! I got a tattoo done by Hayashi last week and it turned out absolutely amazing! It took around 3.5 hours for my 3-4 in cherub. Hayashi is a very meticulous artist, who made sure the piece was as perfect as it could be before we finished our session. I felt comfortable and we took several breaks. The studio itself is small and private. Plus the background music they played was really good. The only negative about the experience was that Hayashi was a bit late. My appointment was at 1230, and we didn't start placing stencils until about 230. I understand things happen, but I feel it's important to mention. Hayashi gave me a discount at the end and I am also extremely happy with the outcome, so overall I had a positive experience. read more

Mateo Street Studio is a clean, well-kept shop on a street with plenty of parking and a convenient location near the I-10 freeways. Upon entering Mateo, I noticed how cozy the studio was for both clients and staff: there was a water cooler, a fridge, a microwave, and plenty of other amenities and personal decorations. Howie, the husband of the shop owner (Sam), even told me to feel free and have water and eat some cookies. I ate some complimentary Pocky, which was a much needed energy boost during my session. Last session I had back in November with a guest tattoo artist from Korea, I didn't adequately hydrate or feed myself so I traveled home woozy and miserable. Here at Mateo, I felt so at home that I was able to take better care of myself and drive home feeling refreshed. Now the experience at Mateo Street Studio is by far the best tattoo experience I've ever had, and I have quite the tattoo collection at this point. Sam, who tattooed me, is such a funny, kind, and generous soul and the same can be said of Mateo's staff. I have never laughed so much in between getting tattooed, thanks to talking with Sam and Izzy during the 2.5 hour session. Her hourly rates are extremely reasonable and I ended up paying less than I thought I would, so I tipped heavily. We went with a large peony on my shoulder instead of what I had requested initially, which also included a chrysanthemum. I'm glad I listened to Sam because I much prefer how this piece came out in the end. Sam has such wonderful values that really speak to her passion for the craft. Her linework is detailed and strong, while her hand itself is light so it wasn't even that painful. I plan to get more tattoos from Sam in the future, and hope that her books fill up soon because Sam deserves it. Also I have to add a big thanks for Howie, who so kindly brought the water bottle I forget at the studio down to me in the street. While I was getting tattooed, Howie actually got a call from someone looking to get a swastika tattoo. He turned them down, which I think speaks to Mateo's values: these people are responsible artists who care about their work and the meanings behind it all. read more

Sam and everybody else at Mateo Street Studio were absolutely amazing. Sam was very kind and quickly sketched out a new tattoo design after there was a quick mix up with what I wanted to get. She was also super cool about waiting for me to eat some food I brought before the session as I hadn't eaten all day prior. She was quick and her work is amazing. My 3 hour session felt much shorter but it was a breeze! Sam's linework and shading are super detailed, but it didn't even feel all that painful given how light and gentle she was. I'm grateful I chose her for my first bigger tattoo (~6 inches). The rest of the staff were extremely friendly which made the atmosphere very comfortable and eased my nerves about getting a bigger tattoo. All in all, I would 100% come back to get more tattoos done here and I highly highly recommend them. read more

My friend Jinny and I visited from Seattle. We were here for about 4-5 days and had no plans for getting a tattoo! I've been wanting a tattoo for awhile and it is very hard to find an artist that understands your vision, taste and delicacy.
