Checked out Makta Khichdi--first U.S. location and it's right here in Chicago! We ordered a bunch of stuff and honestly, everything was good. My favorites were the Italy Touch Sandwich and the Kaju Khichdi--so flavorful and comforting. The biryani was solid too. Also tried the sev puri, kuchi bowl (basically a deconstructed dabeli), vada pav butter, and paneer shaak. My fam said a lot of it tasted like the street food back in India, which says a lot. They've got fun drinks too (non-alcoholic), and the vibe is chill and welcoming. Service was amazing! Definitely a cool spot to check out if you're into Indian street food or just want to try something new!

Anjjeer kaju milkshake- 3/5 Samosa - 5/5 - Mid size but crisp and masal was good Green onion lasuni khichadi - 4/5 - good taste Kaju lasuni khichadi - 5/5 Masala Chaas - 3.5/5 - more masala needed

Great khichdi place. Unique menu for an Indian joint - not your usual Punjabi or South Indian food. I would definitely get this again!

Every dish--except the salad--was spot on: authentic, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The chicken inferno was especially memorable, and the portions were generous. My only suggestion would be for the kachumbar salad to have more vibrant colors and fresher flavors--perhaps beets and carrots instead of the very chewy purple cabbage. I didn't try any of the cocktails, but I did have a glass of cava brut, which was served in a white wine glass and was a very generous pour. This place is truly a gem, and I hope they continue to keep the same recipes and portions because they've got something special here. We will definitely be back!

They have lunch specials, a happy hour, and tea (!) from 2-5, veg or non-veg options, which I'm definitely checking out. If you're vegetarian, items that can be made vegan are clearly marked, and there are more vegan items on the website than I saw on the menu, so I would ask. Most of the French touches appear to be on dishes with meat, though there are flatbreads and a spinach dip, and of course dessert; there is a lot more paneer on the menu than I'm used to, which might be a gesture towards the French love of cheese. Vegans would do best ordering the soya chaap or from the Accompaniments section, which includes classic Indian items (aloo gobi, dal). Overall there are about 8 vegetarian entrees / accompaniments, plus appetizer options. Restaurant serves wine, beer and cocktails in addition to the usual mango lassi, chai and soft drinks. We got a ginger mojito; mango lassi; the corn fritters; the fig/pistachio/paneer flatbread; garlic naan; rice; the soya chaap and a cardamom creme brulee. In general, food had a blend of spices but was mild, which makes sense given the French influence. The corn fritters were nicely spiced with good texture and a tasty sauce. The garlic naan is quite impressive with lots of herbs and garlic. Unless you love soy cutlets, I don't recommend the soya chaap (soy/wheat cutlets in coconut curry sauce); it's fine for what it is - the gravy was delicious and rich - but it's not for me. The flatbread was interesting; the pistachios didn't overwhelm at all but I would have liked more fig to stand up to the paneer. The spouse was impressed with the mojito; the lassi was OK but wasn't as fruity as I like. The cardamom creme brulee is served in a wide ramekin, maximizing the surface area of the sugar crust and making it easily sharable. Instead of permeating the cream, the cardamom seeds provided little bursts of flavor, which was nice but not what I expected. Service was a bit slow but solicitous - we were there on a quiet Sunday night. Copious parking; easy hours; I'll definitely check out the lunch specials and tea when I'm in the mood for local Indian food, heavy on the paneer.

My only suggestion for improvement is that I'd love to see additional paneer options for the lunch special- I would have absolutely ordered 2 different paneer entrees, but I had butter chicken for my second choice and it was also delicious! Tip: parking in DT Wheaton can be crazy sometimes. If you're planning to arrive here at a specific time, definitely give yourself extra time to find parking and walk.

We started with the chicken lollipops. The taste was decent, but apparently the chickens they use are roughly the size of sparrows. Next came the Bang Bang Shrimp. The chef might want to take a field trip to PF Chang's and try their Dynamite Shrimp just to see what the dish is supposed to accomplish. The momos were ordered as appetizers, which I assume means they're intended to arrive before the meal. Ours showed up just as we were finishing our entrées. Maybe they were traveling from Nepal on foot. The goat curry was actually pretty good, which briefly gave us hope. Then the garlic naan arrived and tasted suspiciously like something that had recently completed a successful career at Costco. If they have a tandoor, it's apparently being used for storage. To add to the experience, there was live singing. Unfortunately, the entertainment seemed to receive more attention than the food. My humble suggestion: spend less time rehearsing songs and more time rehearsing recipes. The grand finale? The morning after, both my son and I were dealing with indigestion. Nothing severe, but it was a fitting encore to an already memorable evening. I rarely write negative reviews, but when a restaurant charges premium prices, I expect more than tiny appetizers, delayed food, questionable naan, and a digestive adventure. The biggest mystery of the night remains how this place maintains such a high rating.

Our server was Ricky, who was helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and also not rushing our table. We see each other rarely so there was a lot of talking. We were seated and greeted, ordered the chicken 65, the bread basket (all different types of naan), and rice chips came to the table with two different chutneys. The chicken was dynamite and the onion garlic stuffed naan was my favorite. Tough to stop eating when you start with such amazing apps. They ordered butter chicken, and I got the eggplant, which always has been a personal favorite. Here it was beautifully plated, had some heat, and also flavorful as hell. I had to stop eating after a couple pieces because I was heating up massively. The weather was gorgeous so the doors were open. I was dressed for work, so I was blazing hot. We sat and talked for a while, then decided to come back and order desserts and coffee. Mango creme brûlée and the pistachio ice cream looked great. I had a mango smoothie which was refreshing and not too sweet. Ricky told us it wasn't super busy so we could stay, which was very kind of him. I have been exhausted all week, lots of meetings and I'll be flying home tomorrow. But this is definitely a large variety of options for people to find what they like. Thanks to Ricky and the team for a wonderful dinner! Support small businesses!
