We were looking for a sushi restaurant for my daughter's birthday on our way home from Montauk. We were very lucky to find this place! She loved her vegetarian sushi, miso soup and seaweed salad. I had a mango dish with soy "chicken" which was delicious and my son loved his Malaysian vegetarian green curry. My parents had really good sizzling tofu and a salmon dish. The lettuce wrap appetizer were delicious. The entree portions were large and we left with lots of leftovers. The service was good and quick. Casual, so fine for kids- even on a Friday evening. Words alone cannot express the amazing dining experience that is Matsulin. Truly the best asian fusion in Hampton Bays, Matsulin provides an above and beyond experience with delicious and unique dishes from all over Asia. The owner Vivian is a very kind-hearted woman whose passion you can taste in her cooking. The chicken curry is mouthwatering and to die for, while their calamari is the best I've ever had hands down. Food is always served fresh and in many years I've never been disappointed. For those who complain about waiting, the quality of food you receive is well worth the wait (personally I've never had to wait long) and if you don't want to wait McDonald's is right down the road. This has to be one of the saddest asian restaurants out there. One time i called for a delivery and they said 30 to 45 minutes, 1 hour past and i called and asked about the food and they said its going to be on its way, then 15 minutes past and i called and they said it should be there any minuet then another 15 minutes past i called and they said their driver got pulled over, they did not even bother calling me up. So they only had one driver that night and they had to call another one in and have him go over to where the first delivery man got pulled over and delivery it to me. read more

Every once in a while I come over to Matsulin to grab gyoza to go. Last year it was my go-to lunch snack -- small, seemingly light, with a strong impact. They're great walking food, if you can walk and chew gyoza at the same time. The most recent time I got some gyoza, they were extra crispy on the bottom -- and pretty dang tasty, if I do say so myself. (To first-time tasters, I recommend dipping half in the sauce they give you.) You can call Matsulin while driving into town, and they'll have your food ready by the time you get there. (10-15 minutes) It's one of the things I've always liked about the place. That, and the hostess always remembers you, no matter how long it's been -- it's like her superpower! read more

I loved the lettuce wraps and the salad! I recommend the ginger dressing too... Good choice for Asian in hampton bays with lots of different types (Malaysian, Japanese, Chinese). read more

After giving thumbs down on 99% of restaurants in the Hamptons, I regrettably omitted Matsulin, our favorite stand-by for very good food reasonably priced. Normally I resist what is called "Asian fusion" but in this case it is accurate and also delicious. Thai noodle dishes, Malaysian curries and delectable roast duck, one of the best ever, are on the very long menu that includes sushi, (which I personally don't like) , soups, and original salads such as spicy shredded papaya with shrimp, or cold duck and spinach salad. The service is friendly and professional, and reasonably quick even on a Saturday night, and the crowds on weekends indicate that Matsulin has regular patrons, which include us. Because of the long menu you can order small, medium or large dishes. We usually order two appetizers (reasonably priced at $5 to $8) and one main dish, usually a noodle dish, which is quite inexpensive and easily feeds two people. That was our menu last week plus a small bottle of sake (unfiltered) for my husband, and with tax and tip our bill was about $64. For the Hamptons, or anywhere, that is extremely reasonable, especially for this high quality food. I encourage people to go there and make it your regular spot. read more

Sunday Night Disaster!!! We were happy to return to matsulin after a long absent. Sad to say Its nothing like it used to be. The food was fair but the service was horrific. We were waiting and waiting for food-over an hour. We tried asking the staff about our order but they must be told not to talk to customers because they would only hurry past us. Vivian the owner brushed us off saying the food was coming any minute. No apologies or explanation. We waited another 15 minutes and finally left. If there was a mix up in the kitchen just say so. Instead she got flustered and was rude and brusque like we were bothering her. It was bizarre. Won't ever be back. read more

Topping my pet peeves are restaurant staff who cheat their posted hours by closing early or rushing customers through their meals. Last Sunday we checked Matsulin's website for closing time which is 10pm. We arrived at 915pm only to be told we could get take out only. When we complained the hostess aggressively offered ridiculous excuses that the kitchen closes at 9 etc. and then continued to argue with us about their posted hours of operation. The kitchen staff here are great. The food is good. The management however needs a class in customer service. Very disappointed. read more

3 years since my last review and I still consider Matsulin to be the best Asian restaurant on Long Island. the place feels great with a few recent added touches. low lighting, beautiful sushi bar etc make it the perfect package. try the harp duck... nobody does it better. hint: ask for your favorite classic Chinese dish even if its not on the menu... they will accommodate you in most cases. read more

The food is superb! The place was full so we had to wait a bit but well worth the wait. Food took some time to come but any good restaurant would never rush your food out. Anyone that complains of food taking too long to come out don't usually dine in fine restaurants. If you want rushed food then just go to Mcdonalds. Relaxed atmosphere and the sushi was very fresh. I have never written a review on Yelp before, but joined just so I could review this restaurant. The place was not horrible, but the disconnect between expectations/reviews and reality was so great that I simply had to share my thoughts on this. I had heard good things about this restaurant from people my wife works with, so I eagerly went there after work yesterday with my wife and kids, to be very disappointed. The restaurant is beautiful for a moderately-priced, Asian fusion restaurant. A free-standing, non-shopping mall building promises a good experience, with superior decor, but both service and especially food were lacking. I ordered Pad Thai, and it was quite spicy (too peppery, not just the Pad Thai typical peanut-y/lemony/fishy taste), with a bitter, greasy aftertaste, as thought it were deep-fried in overly used frying oil. I realize this dish is not actually prepared via deep-frying, but making Pad Thai that tastes light and clean, not bitter, is a bit of an art, and I expected better from an upscale restaurant. The taste here reminded me of the worst of take-out-only strip mall Chinese restaurants (and yes, I realize that Pad Thai is not a Chinese dish...) The spring rolls where also extremely crunchy, almost feeling too thick in dough and definitely over-fried, with an unusual hint of mint (which I will not ding them for, although it was not to my taste). My wife ordered a a fake-meat dish from an extended specialty menu, which was quite decent. I used to live near Rockville Centre and order mock duck on the menu at Thai Table, which had simply fantastic Thai food. They had only few fake-meat dishes, but mock duck there was a gold standard to me (no longer on the menu, but they can make it), similar to the dish we ordered at Matsulin, but it was better-spiced. Back to the restaurant at hand... the Thai iced tea was very good, not too intensely spicy, and light and creamy. They made it right, and it was refreshing. Our other appetizer, vegetarian chicken nuggets, were ordered for the kids but were simply not great, even for fake meat. The server spoke extremely limited English. I understand that English may not be a primary language in an restaurant offering regional cuisine, but we had two or three incidents. First, he brought us extra appetizer of dumplings, which we had not ordered. I asked if these were complimentary, and he could not understand the question. Finally he simply brought them back to the kitchen. Much later in the meal, when the hostess/manager (?) asked how our meal was, I found out that the dumplings were indeed not intended as a complimentary offering. Later on, I tried to get an additional side dish of white rice added. This, too, took quite a while to get through, involving pointing, etc., but we were accommodated. The meal proved quite pricey for mediocre cuisine, as the appetizers for the kids jacked up the price. We spent around $60 for 4 people, which is not high for a restaurant but can be high the equivalent of 4 noodle dishes at an Asian restaurant. The food simply didn't feel "worth it" Overall, the price was not the problem. The service and especially the food did not match the price. Had the Pad Thai been great or even good (no bitter oily aftertaste), and (to a lesser degree) had we felt that we could communicate with the server even reasonably well, a quick meal for two adults + 2 kids for $70+ (including tax and tip) might have felt worthwhile. Admittedly, I did not sample the sushi, and the fake meat was quite good, but overall the experience felt like a strip-mall Chinese restaurant meal (even if we ordered mostly Thai food!) good for quick take-out in a pinch, not an upscale, lovely and delicious experience at ANY price. My 2-star rating is NOT a rating-per-value, but an absolute rating based on the quality and taste of the food we ordered. Were I again in the area (I don't live far away) I might try the restaurant again without my kids, but I would avoid the Pad Thai and some of the appetizers, and would need to try something else on the menu. I so much wanted to like this place. A beautiful restaurant is hard to find where I live (Manorville/Moriches area). This place promised so much, but disappointed. When I saw its high food rating listed on a placard (from another rating website, not sure I can name it), I was shocked. Nearby in Manorville, we have the new Asian Perl restaurant. The town is underserved for restaurants, and it is a breath of fresh air. I always order take-out from there, and I haven't even bothered to eat in the restaurant there yet as it seems small and basic (but CLEAN), but the food is delicious. Maybe I just got unlucky in ordering Pad Thai instead of Sushi or some other menu item at Matsulin , but I have to wonder if people are letting themselves be swayed/fooled by the nice decor. read more

First of all, we walked in and we had a reservation. There were many open tables and it took us at least 10 minutes just to be seated. We called over a waiter and asked are you our waiter? He shrugs and says I'll take your order the man didn't even freaking know if he was our waiter. If we hadn't asked we would have sitting there for another 20 minutes. We saw at least 3 tables just walk out, no one even gave them water. We ordered appetizers which we shared and it was barely anything. It was more than an hour until we got our sushi and they didn't even no who's was who's. They also forgot my sons meal which took another 10-20 mins to come. My daughter ordered a hand roll which they gave us just as a regular roll. The food was very good. But the service in my opinion ruined the meal. The people didn't even come back to collect our plates. I ordered 2 rolls and they were barely anything. My whole family was still hungry and we had to keep ordering food. We order the chow fun twice it was delicious but again took forever. We also order spring rolls which were average at best, not my thing. We were talking to a lady and she said she has to BEG for her check. There was only one sushi chef!!! It took us like 2 hours to eat. read more
