I will drive down to Hampton Bays from here on out if I want Asian food. No one had anything bad to say about anything they ordered and everyone wanted more. This is the best Asian restaurant in any place with the word Hampton in it's name (on Long Island). Our only complaint was that everyone in my party noticed a sort of smell about the place. Couldn't really place it and it wasn't noxious but we all sort of recognized it and at first had us taken aback. Glad we stuck through it. read more

The food is some of the best Asian on Long Island! My dish had lightly fried rice noodles with shrimp and scallops. It wasn't drowning in broccoli and oyster sauce but lightly seasoned but very flavorful. The price was reasonable for the Hamptons. Much better than other local Asian restaurants! read more

We tried Matsulin for the first time today for lunch. While the dinner prices are a bit pricey ($20-$25ish), the lunch prices are more like $8-$10 (unless you get sushi or a bento box. Both are more). The food was excellent - very fresh, with balanced flavors. The presentation was nice; obvious thought went into how the dishes were served. Lunch comes with either miso soup or a salad. We had the soup today but might try the salad next time for variety. Also, the service was attentive, both by our waiter and by the young man who refilled our water glasses. All in all, we're glad we tried it. We will go back! read more

Hi, I have been to Matuslin several times and I declare: I am their biggest fan. I love the appetizers, the sushi (you must try snow montain roll) and of corse the fried rice served in a pineapple....(You are sure to earn some envious glances from the other tables when they serve you that big pineapple) My favourite appetizers are the lettuce wrap and the coconut shrimp which I order everytime and they ALWAYS leave me speechless.... I have driven past Matsulin more times than I can remember and thought "hmmm wonder how that is" but never ventured inside. After going for the first time, I am completely hooked and when I leave my taste buds are still screaming for me to go back. Some nights I dream about the coconut shrimp. True story. Let's start with the basics: Decor: Beautiful. Very chic and modern. Staff: Extremely nice and very attentive (although I could do without them refilling my water glass everytime I take a sip, that's good service) Food: AMAAAAAZING!!! My recommendations: Start out with the Coconut Shrimp. I typically do not even like coconut shrimp, the flavor to me can sometimes be a bit overbearing so I was extremely apprehensive to try these for the first time. When I did I was hooked! They are cooked perfectly and taste so delicious. Any description I give could not possibly do justice. They also come with a really tasty Thai dipping sauce which is like nothing I have ever tasted before. Entree: Although I have tried a few good things, my absolute favorite is Sambai Shrimp. It is a stir fry of Shrimp, very fresh asparagus, peppers, and red onions in a chili pepper based sauce. The dish is so fresh, flavorful, light and delicious. I could go on and on about this dish but again it wouldn't do any justice. Dessert: Fried banana or fried icecream both are great, I personally love the fried banana with coconut icecream. This place is a must go. It is a gem. The food is so fresh and flavorful I just can't even. I have yet to try sushi from there, but have heard amazing things about it!I used to love Tony's Asian Fusion down the street but I do not even think of going there now. GO GO GO GO GO! The only REALLY GOOD restaurant in Hampton Bays, and far superior to what's served at the Tony's Asian Fusion franchise that seems to have blanketed portions of the East End with its brand of mediocre pan-asian fare. For starters, you can't go wrong with a little bowl of miso soup, and a simple, crisp and gingery green salad. I've never had a better Buddha's delight -- a rich assortment of veggies, superfine cellophane noodles, pan seared tofu and a sauce that's to die for. My significant other usually gets the totally irresistable Siam Chicken, sliced thin and fried in what seems to be a panko crust and served with the most unique and perfectly balanced tangy, spicy sauce. Highly recommended. UPDATE - FEB 2008: Just when I thought they couldn't get any better, they went and added a vegetarian menu! I had the pepper "steak" and it was very tasty. I recommend that anyone who likes vegetarian fare to pay them a visit - the menu is a trial of sorts, and if it doesn't take off they might eliminate it. read more

Went here on a Friday night with my boyfriend because we were sick of all the fast food and franchises around riverhead and let me tell you it was a smart move. We were seated right away and the ambiance was very nice and relaxing. We ordered the spare ribs, roti canai, Vietnamese calamari and a salad to start. the ribs were fall off the bone good, roti canai was a bit bland that night but it's usually better, the calamari wasn't greasy and flavorful and the salad had a good amount of dressing. For our main course we got pad Thai and jalapeño yellowtail and let me tell you! The yellowtail was so fresh. My only tiny complaint is I wish the portions are a tad bit bigger bc it does get expensive ordering 4 appetizers and two main course for two people. read more

I have been a regular patron for over three years. The quality of the foood and the freshness is outstanding. Wine list is very reasonable for the location of the restaurant and has recently been expanded. Staff is prompt and courteous, hostess manages to remember regular's names in spite of high volume. Made the mistake of ordering from here after having enjoyed the food at the restaurant in past visits. We were conscious of being subtly overcharged ($1 or $2 per app/roll) in the past, but staff were at least apologetic when we pointed out their mistakes. This time every single thing we ordered had an extra $1 tacked on, which was explained as a "takeout surcharge" when I pointed it out. The lady at the desk dubiously explained that they were in the process of "changing the menu" when I said I had never been anywhere that charges a takeout surcharge before, and was clearly lying. The food here is good but they nickel and dime everyone to death and don't back down when caught on it, so beware and don't trust your bill or the hostess. read more

Quickly seated at 7 pm on a Monday. Service was poor. Had to ask twice to get silverware after receiving my food (5 min). Had to ask twice to get the bill as well. Food was mediocre. I ordered the garlic chicken which came out dry, flavorless, and extremely salty. The chicken also did not seem to be cleaned properly due to the excessive amount of little bones in the dish. Had an amazing experience! The owner sat down with me as I was by myself and then gave me a tempura banana dessert for free. I got a Thai mango curry that came in a mango. It had soy chicken which sounds iffy at first but was actually pretty good. I would highly recommend this place and will get the pad Thai next time per the owners suggestion. read more

Great for dining out or ordering take out. The atmosphere is comfortable, the staff is pleasant and always present. You're never waiting for them. Went to Matsulin last night for dinner with some friends and loved it! The food was delicious. The atmosphere is very low key and relaxing. You would never know from looking at the outside though, as the restaurant is situated in an old bank building. Get the crispy fish and the pad thai! We were looking for a sushi restaurant for my daughter's birthday on our way home from Montauk. We were very lucky to find this place! She loved her vegetarian sushi, miso soup and seaweed salad. I had a mango dish with soy "chicken" which was delicious and my son loved his Malaysian vegetarian green curry. My parents had really good sizzling tofu and a salmon dish. The lettuce wrap appetizer were delicious. The entree portions were large and we left with lots of leftovers. The service was good and quick. Casual, so fine for kids- even on a Friday evening. I wouldn't call this place either Chinese, sushi or Pan Asian. Actually I'm not sure what they are other than very pricey with relatively small portions. The food was eatable but very far from good in my estimation. The service was well below par and the restaurant was far from crowded. Not a top choice! read more
