My wife had the Dinner Combo with Salmon Shioyaki and Calif. Roll. She thought the Shioyaki was completely mediocre. I ate her Calif Roll and can confirm it too was unremarkable. My son ordered Chicken Udon and a 49er roll and he liked both. I tried one piece of the 49er roll and agree it was nice. I ordered the Titanic roll. It was good, but seemed small for that price category. The server was pleasant and polite, but he forgot to bring out my Sapporo (unforgivable!). Also, all the food came out in random order. When you have a party of two or more they should be smart enough to bring out the food in some logical sequence. We had a situation where one member of our party was eating while the others waited, then another item would be delivered to our table and then it was someone else's turn to eat while the other two waited. Crazy. Throughout this meal we were wishing we went to Yo Sushi instead. Finally, the bill came, so I place my credit card into the provided cup. Later the server comes back with an iPad with what appeared to be a SQUARE attached. So, STEP 1: I'm supposed to choose a gratuity, either 15, 20, or 25% while the server is standing right there eyeballing this whole process???? Ridiculous! Then, STEP 2: I'm supposed to electronically sign. I should have just drawn an "X" on that screen. I didn't get a credit card receipt, so I get up and ask about a hardcopy receipt. They act like I'm the first one who's ever asked for a credit card receipt in the restaurant's entire existence. So the guy brings me the same bill and presents that as the receipt. This "receipt" doesn't have any credit card information on it nor the final amount with gratuity. I'm the type of person who diligently reconciles all bank and credit card accounts every month. I post every transaction to a register. If there's a problem (admittedly, very rare) I have the receipt to use as evidence with the CC company. Theoretically, Matsuri could change the amount charged to my account and I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. What if they wanted a 500% tip? Anyway, why can't the do credit card translations like the rest of the universe? Why are they so rink-e-dink to be using SQUARE? This isn't a taco truck! I chose a 15% tip but I have no idea what the total amount charged to my card was. Is the tip calculated before or after tax? Finally, the restaurant name is Matsuri, but the bill says KIMCHEE. What's up with that? Food quality vs. price: we walked out feeling ripped-off. Never again. We will go back to good old reliable Yo's. Forgotten Sapporo: to me this is a major screw up. Restaurants want their patrons well lubricated and they missed out on an opportunity for more booze sales. Credit card nonsense: a proper receipt is important to some people, like myself. Choosing a gratuity while the server is practically holding the iPad in front of you is about as stupid as it gets. Let's make the customer feel really pressured and uncomfortable. If he didn't forget my Sapporo he would have gotten 20%, I get that the restaurant business is hard because there is so much competition. But it's not hard to execute. It ain't rocket science. But in my opinion its to get us in and out.. which I had initially mentioned to her kuz I had to make a tat... yet..the service was sllllllow as hell. Convenient location, good price, quick turnaround time, and very decent sized portions. It's your average Japanese food, but it will satisfy cravings and it's worth your money. I enjoy rolls that are not made with imitation crab meat, so I applaud Matsuri for having most of their maki rolls being made just straight up rice, seaweed, fish, and sometimes extra sauce. That being said, I feel like sometimes if you order a maki with sauce (ie. spicy salmon maki, albacore with spicy sauce, etc), the sauce and rice drown out the fish. I haven't tried the Korean portion of the menu, but I'm enticed and will be updating this review once I try it! Really friendly and great service will bring a smile to your face, to boot! read more

I just moved to Vallejo from Georgia and have been dying for sushi since I got here. I saw these reviews and was excited to have sushi for the first time in months. I ordered the seared albacore special roll, miso soup, and seaweed salad for take out. When I got home I noticed the soy wrap the sushi was in was 3 different colors: green, brown and some white. I took a bite and had a longggg hair stuck in my teeth. I couldn't think of eating any more without the thought of vomiting. So I drove back to the restaurant and I spoke to the owner. I was in the middle of trying to explain the situation to her and she walked away from me mid-sentence. She shoved a refund for only the sushi in my face and dashed off back to the table she was sitting at when I walked in. I never got a receipt with my order and was ignored when I asked for one on my second trip. I spent $23, got $13 back, and ate one piece of sushi. This was my first experience with California sushi, what a bummer. read more

If you're coming for lunch, remember they close at 2! I came here with my friend and got here 20 min before they closed. I honestly thought they were going to tell us the kitchen is closed. BUT we got exactly what we wanted. We ordered the rainbow roll, miso soup, pink lady, and of course SAKE! Aha! Service was on point. Before when I use to live in Vallejo, I would come here all the time. We came for special occasions and even for fresh oysters for happy hour. We (my boyfriend and I) saw the same people all the time, still, they never recognized us. In fact, one night we sat at the oyster bar for happy hour and spoke with a guy who claimed he always worked there, even asked our names and stated he would never forget it. Went there the following week, past our tables several times and didn't say a word. Food tastes good, but I have had better. Their fresh oysters are pretty decent though. Service is always great, I come here so often that the the two ladies that usually take my order always bring me extra ginger without me having to ask. They prolly only remember me as the "Ginger Guy". If you have a question about a particular item just ask them they are knowledgeable, if they don't know they will find out for you. We just went to Matsuri for the first time and overall we really liked it. We got the pink lady roll and the Napa Valley roll and a teriyaki Bento box. The food was all great and came to the table very quickly. The servers were also all very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was very clean and had a nice ambience. I Attended the O'Regan Wedding here at Matsuri's on January 23, 2016 and was treated to some of the best food ever! Not only was the food delicious, but the service was excellent. The staff that served the food was helpful in explaining what certain dishes were, and ALWAYS had a smile on their faces. From the "I Do's" to the best cup cake Wedding Cake EVER, all the way to the last song, this was a GREAT place to host a wedding.... It was big, yet intimate...and the Guests (along with the Bride and Groom) constantly had smiles on their faces which told me.....they were having a BLAST... I've come here on several occasions since it was the only sushi place I knew around American Canyon. I knew that going to a sushi place out in the boonie areas are going to mean less quality and more expensive prices (compared to the other sushi places in the Bay). Trying to keep an open mind, I tried it multiple times and was not impressed. The caterpillar roll was good, but small and pricey. The bento boxes were once again small but pricey ($13 for a bento with barely anything in it). The other rolls we order (I forget what they are) were usually small and not that tasty. Service is a hit or miss. They hire young teen girls who wear jeans, tshirt, and fashionable accessories as their servers, which in my opinion, is a bit unprofessional. Some of them are attentive, some not so much. Although it mentions nothing about adding 18% gratuity on a party of 6 or more on their menus, they do it anyway. I didn't think that was cool, considering our party of six consisted of 5 adults and 1 5 year old who barely ate. (I don't know if that's the proper rule to include children, but whatever.) I'm so happy for a local sushi spot in the V. This place used to be Osaka's and has now morphed into a more upscale, better management, and better overall experience. I LOVE that they now have an oyster bar. And yes it will be crowded on the weekends but it's due to them having a live band on Fri/Sat. They now have a cool lounge area you can sit at while waiting for a table. And if you come mid week, no problem, you should be seated immediately. Totally not worth going if you're on a budget and/or you just want to get your money's worth. Menu items were pricey! Sushi is a really small portion for the price you're getting them for. They don't even taste at all amazing or worth it. I say the portions you get are worth $4 for a $7 roll. As for the bento boxes, I must say that the chicken and salmon are pretty good. That's at least worth it if you want to spend $20 on a meal. It also comes with tempura, salad, and miso soup, so you get a wonderful variety. Their salad and miso soup aren't top notch quality though. I can definitely get instant miso soup and their salad in bulk for $20 that could last me a month! The positives though: Their salad dressing was pretty amazing. the service was good. And they have a wonderful view of a small lake if you sit at the side of their restaurant. We've gone to Matsuri in Benicia for years and I am always worried when owners try to open a second location but they nailed it with this one! Matsuri was a great dining experience. The sushi is outstanding and the service was excellent. The place was jammed when we were there but the service didn't suffer in the least. The menu is great and the value is excellent. The horrible things I've read so far about this place aren't anywhere near the experience I had. I'd really give the place a three and a half, but this place needs the aid of an extra half star to bump up its average. The current situation is a HUGE improvement from Osaka Sushi, which originally occupied this big space. Osaka wasn't terrible, but it couldn't compete with urban Japanese fare. The decor is much more comfortable as less spartan than before, and the bento boxes are more interesting (fried oyster?) I was here with a big party (the fam), and indeed, they do charge a 18% gratuity, which I've come to expect after a year of dining out nearly nonstop. Nevertheless, they were able to serve us in a timely manner. The squid tempura appetizer was good (the batter kept coming off, but thumbs up for the sauce.) The oldies ordered bento boxes and we kids got rolls. The rolls are about average price for what you get and the fish/goodies-to-rice ratio was good. I had a Nigiri combo: ebi, white tuna, masago, sake, hamachi, unagi and a CA roll. I must say, the CA rolls aren't super great (no mayo) but are decent. The best deal here is probably those bento boxes. Eight bucks and you'll be stuffed. I poured imaginary libations to the sushi gods for granting Vallejo with a decent sushi place to take the folks. Thank you for not making me go to Kaigan in Benicia ever again. read more
