I've never had a bad experience here. The sushi is yummy, especially the pink lady roll. My uncle really favors the sashimi here, and he's definitely a sashimi enthusiast. So its not like Vallejo has many sushi joints though i suppose this one is one of the better ones. I went to this restaurant a few times when i was in Vallejo and craving sushi. The food is a bit overpriced and their service could need some improving. The couple times ive been there the servers seem to have the attitude "i could care less." Though maybe it could be the fact the times i went it was either they were kind of busy and not enough waiters to go around or not enough people in the restaurant and for whatever reason did not seem to care. I admit that I am a bit of a sushi snob, but Matsuri is a place to be avoided. You're not going to get physically sick from the sushi, there's just nothing redeeming about the place. Decor? Nope. Sushi? Not too tasty. Price? Too high. The best way I can think of describing the sushi is that its like the sushi you would get at a supermarket, only with more choices than just a California Roll. There were no rolls on the menu that I did not recognize and I can't recall any of the rolls coming with albacore. I got a couple standard rolls and some nigiri. My friend and I both got our dinner at the same time, but my other friend who only ordered one roll didn't receive her food until 20 mins after ours. RIDICULOUS! I like the Titanic Roll (which is more filling than it looks like it'll be), the Unasake Roll (simple but yummy), and the Sake Maki and Negi-Hama (which are both 8 pieces each). The pieces of salmon were fatty and delicious! There are a few things in the "rolls" section of the menu that aren't what most people would think of when they're ordering sushi rolls. This place is under new and better management. Food is definitely yummier and service is soooo much better. We ordered the spicy unagi roll, pink lady roll, caterpillar roll and customized California roll (cucumber wrap instead of seaweed). They definitely used the highest sushi grade sashimi because everything tasted so fresh. We couldn't get enough and kept on ordering more! Sushi master prepared for us one of his special creations, which we called scallop in a spoon- it was to die for. I will probably order this every time I come here! It's absolutely delicious. Considering there are few sushi places in Vallejo and its vicinity, Matsuri is definitely the place you want to go to if you don't feel like driving outside of town. I've had better sushi, but because of its convenience and its atmosphere, especially on Friday nights, I give it 4 stars. The fish tasted fresh, with interesting combinations and flavors. I thought the price was spot on for what it was. I've been to places that were far cheaper, but so was the quality. Been coming to this place for a couple years now. Went yesterday (7/6/18) and noticed things had changed (decor, menu, etc.) and found out it's under new ownership. We usually order a few sushi rolls and a couple extras. My wife ordered the Hawaiian roll and was really good but I also ordered another (forgetting the name) and it was not as tasty. Overall the sushi was ok but the service was not. Don't get me wrong the servers were working very hard but I wasn't sure if they were understaffed or inexperienced?? I enjoyed my dining experience here at Matsuri on an early Friday evening. The place was not too packed, but had its diners scattered around the seating arrangement. We were seated promptly upon entrance on a comfortable cushioned bench with a nice view of the rest of the lightly dimmed restaurant. Service was prompt. I ordered a two-entree "Matsuri dinner" (bento box w/ soup and salad) w/ fried oyster and salmon teriyaki, and my boyfriend ordered a yosenabe bowl (soup). We also ordered a crazy monkey roll for the side. The food came in a timely matter and in good-sized portions. In addition to my oysters and salmon, I was hooked up with sashimi & tempura--two items usually considered entrees on its own in a bento box. There obviously were quite a few leftovers we took home. Total bill came out to a little less than $50. If you're ever in the "valley of the hoes" (just a silly nickname for Vallejo for those of you who don't know), I recommend checking this place out as we found it via my iPhone Yelp app after spending a day at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom! Honestly I wouldn't have noticed it was under construction if it weren't for he awkward service we received. I was visiting in town and my brother took me here. It was between this and Panda Express or Princess Garden (yuck!). I guess this place was the old Osaka's. But I wouldn't know. I left Vallejo in the early 90s. The place was packed and noisy. Our waitress was really nice and was always smiling when she came to our table. I had the dinner combo with the sashimi and chicken and salmon teriyaki. Not a whole lot to rave about. I was stationed in Japan for a year and this was a common fare over there and not nearly as expensive. As with any restaurant, you're not just paying for the food but all the overhead and costs associated with a business. I didn't get sick either, so it's worthy of eating in a pinch. read more

while on vacation, my family and I stumbled across Matsuri Restaurant. They had the best sushi that I have ever tasted. The seafood was so fresh with the perfect amount of sauces/garnishes. The rice was flavorful and moist, just like in Japan. Everything I had, from the pink lady rolls, crab legs, nigiri sushi, salad, bulgogi meat, desserts was delicious! The portions were generous too. Even my picky kids devoured everything they were served! I was impressed with how clean the establishment was and also with the warm and cozy ambiance. I give this place 5 stars. Best of Solano County? I sure hope not! My daughter and I were visiting Discovery Kingdom and after a long day eating junk food at the Kingdom wanted some "real food." Unfortunately we consulted Yelp and decided upon this restaurant based upon the glowing reviews. It is apparent that Solano County has the worst Japanese restaurants in the country! This "Japanese" restaurant in addition to having "Japanese" food on the menu includes KOREAN food dishes. None of the workers was Japanese! I ordered the $19 salmon teriyaki combo which included rice and the $5 combo part (miso soup, salad, California rolls). The salmon was cooked perfect unfortunately the teriyaki sauce was tasteless. Rice was okay. Miso soup was average. Salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, slivers of carrots, and slices of cucumber. Salad dressing was nothing remarkable. California rolls did not have cucumber. Plate appeared to have an excessive amount of garnish. My daughter ordered the $25 sashimi plate. It included salmon, yellow tail, octopus, and salmon. She thought the sashimi was okay. I was sorely disappointed with our food. Other than the poor food, the service was good, restaurant was clean. I will not return. read more
