Al fresco dining, basically in a rustic countryside setting, basically on the Cape. Basically. There's nothing outstanding about Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern, yet nothing dissuasive. It's innocuous - an everytavern catered to olde thymey tastes and bayside expectations. The beer is brewed locally, with a loose, neither sweet, neither bitter, Cape Cop Amber that proved to be non-craft drinkable and fairly inexpensive. The chowder (is it clam on the menu?) is mostly krab, yes Krab, but it's got a solid balance of cream, sherry and briny bits. Edible, somewhat enjoyable, just not memorable. If you decide to try, get the bowl over the cup - it's only a dollar extra. Rain forced us from the outside to a stark, stale dining room, so stay under the sun (weather permitting). Service is friendly, I doubt this place gets crowded and it's ideal for a big group bent on conversation in the presence of passable prandials and chilled cervezas.

Having grown up in Barnstable and having deep appreciation for Barnstable Village, I had high hopes for my first time eating at the Tavern with my family. On a Friday night at 5:30pm with live music on the patio, it was impossible to get a table outside. Since the musician was very popular, I was not surprised nor upset. The decor inside is older, but clean and we got a nice table for all 4 of us. Our waiter looked like he was fresh off a shift at the Tower of Terror at Disney. But, he was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, he disappeared toward the end of our meal and we were inside for 1.5 hours (and my family eats pretty fast!). We ordered our desserts to go, and they came out about 15 minutes later. My dish (I believe haddock) was pretty good and so was the chowder I had as an appetizer. All of us at the table were happy with our food and the portions (just right). The prix fixe menu is definitely the way to go. It's ultimately a toss up if you are choosing between the Dolphin and the Tavern. If it's a nice evening, you may prefer eating outside at the Tavern. The Dolphin has a much nicer, classic interior. p.s. According to the Barnstable Village Haunted Tour, this restaurant is haunted! But, I didn't see any ghosts on my visit :-(

The steak was fantastic. 4 of the 8 of us had different steaks. However, one of us had the lasagna, and the rest of us finished it. Some of the best lasagna I've ever had, aside from my mother-in-law's. Slightly upscale place for the laid-back Cape, but we felt comfortable dining there in shorts and t-shirts. Don't miss this place when driving through Barnstable!

The interior is pretty basic, small tables and small chairs, so a person of substance such as myself didn't find the seating comfortable. I tried: - French onion soup: this should have been an easy win. I found the Gruyere cheese to be overly thick, and the broth to be heavy handed on the wine. - Steak tartare: this was a good dish. The beef was thin cut, smooth, and the egg was cooked just right so the yolk added richness that then got offset by the capers. Due to the richness, you may actually find that this could be all you need for a meal, despite it looking small. - Croque Madame: le sigh, what a failure this sandwich was. Over easy egg? Not today, over medium, so not much runny yolk but a thicker one. This is a gigantic salt bomb, in addition. They serve your water in tiny glasses and every bite led to downing an entire glass of water. It's good they were on top of refilling the glasses, but even then I finished a quarter of this before I couldn't take it any more. I did saunter over to the counter where they have a lot of good looking pastries, so we'll see if the ones I bought end up redeeming this place. As it stands, I can't recommend this establishment unless you'd like to try the tartare.

Wine was still available in 3oz. and 5oz. pours, and we found a couple that we really enjoyed. We received fantastic service at the counter, and we were checked on several times while we were seated (we were lucky enough to get the plush chairs by the window). Nice to see many familiar faces amongst the servers, and the sommelier (Raphael) is truly wonderful! We have always been met with warm greetings and very good and attentive service. My wife loved all the courses of her meal. 2 of mine were amazing (the toro and the steak), 2 were very good (the lobster and the lavender dessert), and one was decidedly lacking (first course bonito). So, in my opinion, not as consistently great as it was last year. But maybe wife would differ with me on this. Yes, it is pricey. But of the "pricey" options on the Cape, we definitely feel this is still the best. It's up to each person to decide whether any of these fine dining/pricey options are worth the premium over the cost of dining at the many "nice " restaurants on the Cape. We will return.

While I can appreciate the choose your own adventure / tasting concept and benefits of moving at your own pace, wine tasting is something where I'd prefer to have more of a personal touch. The storytelling and personal connection was missing, and made the experience feel a bit hollow. The space was a nice open hang and there's snacks and games, and there is staff there, but the experience made me realize I prefer a guided human tour for some things, wine tasting being one of them. Prices also snuck up on us a bit, it's easy to lose count of how many you've had with the card reader. I was also a bit bummed to find that if you liked a wine you cannot purchase a bottle on site.
