The Barnstable Inn Tavern and Restaurant on Main Street in Barnstable has been on my wish list for years, and I finally got a chance to go. Rumors say the location is haunted. The restaurant looks much bigger from the outside than when you actually get inside. There is an entry foyer and a dining room and Tavern in a separate room. I pictured the restaurant to be much different than it actually was. We sat in a booth in the Tavern. It was a busy weekend night and was rather loud in there from patrons at the bar. The music seemed to be primarily 70's rock. The service was excellent and waitstaff were very attentive. I had a cup of the squash bisque which was a recommendation of one of the waitstaff, sour dough rolls, and then half broiled chicken, mashed, broccoli and cranberry ginger chutney. The chicken was moist and tender and the bisque was creamy and smooth. Veg and potato were delicious also. I think the cranberry chutney would be better without the ginger as it had a strong ginger taste and cranberry would have gone better with something like orange or nuts in it. I had a glass of Berringer white zin and for dessert, the toasted almond cake. My friend had white clam chowder, scrod, with mashed and broccoli, and a molten lava cake and she enjoyed hers as well. Be sure to sit in the dining room if you go there on a weekend night because the bar is very loud. Everything was very good. My only complaint would be the loud dining area. read more

I went to this little tavern earlier this evening for one of their wine dinners - and also for my friend's birthday dinner. The rate was $55 per person for a 5 course dinner (all paired with their own wine) so it came out to be $69.50 for the wine dinner. The meal is prix-fixed, but they were very accommodating for the non-drinkers and vegetarians in our party. The wine was all delicious. The whites were my favorite, but of course that all depends on your personal taste in wine. The last wine, the moscato, was far too sweet for me (but the other guests enjoyed it thoroughly). Each course was plated with care alongside its wine partner. The bread pudding (as delicious as it was) could have been plated a bit better. For something created with such a delicately sweet flair, it almost seemed a sin to be plopped onto the plate the way it was. As each course was being served, you heard a chiming of glasses and were given a brief speech about the wine that was chosen for this course. I found this to be a bit interruptive even though it was informative. The staff of young girls were all very polite and helpful. I arrived an hour early (didn't know how traffic was going to be since I was coming from out-of-state) and was directed to the bar while I waited. Once some of my party arrived, the hostess came into the bar to let me know that I could join them at our table. To knit-pick, it seemed a bit odd that the plates didn't all match, as well as the wine glasses. Also, even though this was a wine-tasting style dinner - the sheets of paper describing what you were about to consume under the glass table top at each setting was a bit much. Since we an audible introduction to each wine was being made, it ruined the elegance of the plate setting to have a typed-up 'prix-fixed' menu under each plate. I did enjoy my meal. The bacon-wrapped beef was cooked perfectly. I was impressed that every piece I saw seemed to be cooked to the same level, a nice medium-rare. The scallops were paired deliciously, I only wish they were a bit less chewy. Since they were being served to a large group of people, I'm assuming they may have been out too long during the plating. The salsa served with the scallops was a brilliant choice. All in all, this was an enjoyable dining experience and I would go back again. Al fresco dining, basically in a rustic countryside setting, basically on the Cape. Basically. There's nothing outstanding about Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern, yet nothing dissuasive. It's innocuous - an everytavern catered to olde thymey tastes and bayside expectations. The beer is brewed locally, with a loose, neither sweet, neither bitter, Cape Cop Amber that proved to be non-craft drinkable and fairly inexpensive. The chowder (is it clam on the menu?) is mostly krab, yes Krab, but it's got a solid balance of cream, sherry and briny bits. Edible, somewhat enjoyable, just not memorable. If you decide to try, get the bowl over the cup - it's only a dollar extra. Rain forced us from the outside to a stark, stale dining room, so stay under the sun (weather permitting). Service is friendly, I doubt this place gets crowded and it's ideal for a big group bent on conversation in the presence of passable prandials and chilled cervezas. read more

Having grown up in Barnstable and having deep appreciation for Barnstable Village, I had high hopes for my first time eating at the Tavern with my family. On a Friday night at 5:30pm with live music on the patio, it was impossible to get a table outside. Since the musician was very popular, I was not surprised nor upset. The decor inside is older, but clean and we got a nice table for all 4 of us. Our waiter looked like he was fresh off a shift at the Tower of Terror at Disney. But, he was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, he disappeared toward the end of our meal and we were inside for 1.5 hours (and my family eats pretty fast!). We ordered our desserts to go, and they came out about 15 minutes later. My dish (I believe haddock) was pretty good and so was the chowder I had as an appetizer. All of us at the table were happy with our food and the portions (just right). The prix fixe menu is definitely the way to go. It's ultimately a toss up if you are choosing between the Dolphin and the Tavern. If it's a nice evening, you may prefer eating outside at the Tavern. The Dolphin has a much nicer, classic interior. p.s. According to the Barnstable Village Haunted Tour, this restaurant is haunted! But, I didn't see any ghosts on my visit :-( read more

What are they doing here? I mean, WHAT ARE THEY DOING?! I've been coming here for about 5 years now since my pops retired up here, and it's literally gotten worse each year (somehow). We used to LOVE the clam chowder and clam pizza offerings (Cape clam fix), but the product is literally different each time we come ..... and not in a good way. Chowder this week was bland and watery as all hell, and the pizza was a barely-cooked mess. We always do take out, so I can't vouch for the dine-in experience, but I can't imagine it's much better. Every time I go to the Cape I can't help but return to the Tavern. On my past weekend trip I visited twice: once for dinner on Friday and again for brunch on Sunday. I love their extensive menu: plenty of choices for even the pickiest of eaters. On Friday I sampled the arugula and chickpea salad and then ordered the mushroom ravioli entree. My waitress was extremely helpful and attentive. I love how fast the service is! Dining alone gave me the opportunity to observe the tourist crowd. Conversations included how to make the best Crockpot beef burgundy, followed by Harvard's new policy regarding giving out permits for tourist buses.... Anyway, I digress. I returned on Sunday for delicious brunch on the patio. Nothing beats outdoor dining on a spectacular summer day. I was able to order a custom order of fried eggs with bacon, instead of the scrambled eggs on the menu. I definitely continue recommend the Tavern to anyone traveling on 6A! I am a Cape Cod native, born and raised in West Barnstable. The Barnstable Tavern has consistent food, and consistently good. Sunday brunch is my new "thing" with the Eggs Benny at the top of my list (and they subbed the meat for spinach - yum!). Mimosas are very generous and yummy with a splash of grapefruit juice. They are always willing to make things however you want! If you go, ask for the cute red-head Laura. Ok, so here is the deal...we went to check out the Barnstable Tavern on a busy summer evening. There was a guitarist playing outside in the front patio area. We really came to eat and hear some music but it was so hot and muggy outside that we chose to eat inside. Luckily, they gave us a booth that had a view out to the patio and we cracked open the window and was able to hear the music (which was just some James Taylor and Jimmy Buffet wanna-be). We started out with a fried clam appetizer. I was worried they would be chewy, as they usually are. They were. The batter was good but they were tough to break down. (I have yet to find non-chewy clams down here on the Cape). My husband ordered egg roll appetizer for his dinner and I ordered a veggie burger. The egg rolls were good (two of them). Nice and crispy and just like good ones from a good Chinese restaurant. The veggie burger, on the other hand, was probably the worst thing I have ever ordered. It was like eating a hard roof shingle. The bun even was was old and stale. I had to return it. The waitress was non-attentive. She did take the veggie burger off the bill and did apologize. She was not too swift in picking up our check however. I think this is a tourist trap and a place I would never go back to. read more

A friend and I decided to do a girls weekend down the Cape. We were driving around because we didn't know what to have to lunch and drove by this place and took a quick turn into the drive way to park. We were impressed as the experience could have gone in a totally different direction. We chose to sit outside since it was so nice! I had the CapeCod Red beer and my friend had the Cape Cod Blonde. They were both great beers for a local beer. The service was fine for lunch on the patio. I never actually went inside the restaurant. The menu is extensive and they had specials. I opted for the mussels in EVOO and white wine (on the appetizer list) and a cup of clam chowder. The mussels were cook to perfection and I even ate the a bit of the broth like a soup. It was very good. The clam chowder was incredible! I kinda wished I got a bowl. It was perfect in consistency and the taste was so good. I kept saying how good the chowder was. My friend got the clam roll. It was a decent portion for the price. I tried one and they were not rubbery and the batter was just right. Needless to say, I would definitely be heading back there again the next time I am around there!! read more

Tourists are guaranteed to love this place. Nestled in picturesque Barnstable Village, the Tavern just oozes traditional New England atmosphere. And it's a great place for a warm, inviting reasonably-priced meal after battling another Cape Cod tradition -- all that maddening beach traffic. On my recent visit, I found the food to be hit or miss. My colleagues raved about the crab cakes, lamb and shrimp -- and I will personally vouch for the savory whole bellied fried clams deep fried in a traditional, golden New England light batter. Terrific! But the clam chowder was scandalously thin and watery, and the french fries pre-fab frozen and mushy at best. Overall, a good experience. While driving around the Cape on a damp Sunday, my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this cute restaurant in Barnstable. I was craving breakfast food, and he lunch, so the tavern served as a perfect compromise for us. The establishment is split into two sections, a nice dining room and a rustic tavern. We opted for the tavern and were seated immediately (no crowd when we arrived around 1pm). Our waitress was very pleasant, and she was perfectly attentive. I ordered off the special brunch menu (which was dated, seeming to have been made specifically for that day). After being refreshed by a wellmade mimosa, I decided on the Ham and Swiss Omelet, which also came with homefries. It was good, but I was hoping for cubed ham in the omelet, rather than deli-sliced ham...A little disappointing, but the taste was still good. My date loved his bowl of clam chowder as well as his clam roll. He claimed that both were delicious, especially the clam chowder. The menu was priced higher than breakfast establishments I have been to before, but this restaurant is definitely on a higher scale than smaller places near home. Wow... what a disappointing meal. I have been here before and really enjoyed it but my goodness has this place slipped. After being seated outside I waited 15 minutes for my waitress to come and take our drink orders. Drinks arrived and we ordered dinner. Service was insanely slow. We asked for refills which never came.....Only one person in our party enjoyed their meal and one meal was so poorly prepared that it was not eatable and was sent back. We complained twice, once about the food and once about the wait, but no solution was offered and we were still charged full price. this place has really gone down hill which is too bad as I have sent many people here. Where to begin... We decided to sit outside on the pretty patio area; unfortunately, once it began to get dark, the few dimly lit candles on a few tables and single string of lights were not enough to light the patio area...needless to say, the tables were virtually pitch black; we could barely see the food on our plates to even be able to cut our food. My dad substituted potatoes for the side of linguine that came with his meal; the waitress asked if he also wanted the vegetable (asparagus) that went with his meal choice. He said "sure". Only to find out later that they charged him $4 for that asparagus they offered, and another $4 to substitute the potatoes for linguine. $8 added to his meal!!!! When our meals finally arrived (it took a long time; our server was apologetic)... I ordered the dinner size arugula salad and added steak tips on top. The salad came with feta...I really dislike feta and asked them to swap it with cheddar. The server said no problem. My salad arrived loaded with feta. Really hard to remove all the little pieces, in the dark, when it's tossed throughout the salad. They said they'd bring me a side of cheddar. Then realized it didn't solve the problem of my entire salad being loaded with feta. So they told me to remove the steak tips from the salad and they'd bring me a new salad with cheddar. Unfortunately, when the waitress came back, she said "oops! I brought you a Greek salad instead" ugh. She told me to just keep both salads and left. Ultimately, this didn't solve the problem, as I now had two salads I didn't want and we still paid for my meal. Service was unusual; we had a combination of 3 people who served our table throughout the evening. Apparently two were bartenders. While the patio setting was pretty, it was very strange that one of the employees who was clearing tables out on the patio, made a sport out of emptying all of the drinking glasses from the tables he was clearing, by THROWING the leftover beverages into nearby plants surrounding the patio (usually several feet away)...while I'm sure this made his job of clearing tables much easier, jt was really inappropriate while people were dining all around the patio as he's throwing drinks (let me make it clear that he wasn't just "pouring out" the drinks into the plants). We waited quite some time after finishing our meals for our bill. Once we finally got the bill, we waited once again for a while and finally decided to just bring our payment inside the building and try to pay inside as there didn't seem to be anyone coming back to our table anytime soon. Overall, the food was mediocre. We all decided we definitely won't be visiting here again. This used to be a favorite of ours years ago; we haven't been in quite some time and think the place might be under new ownership. I recently ate there, for the first time, after purchasing a Limelight deal. I expected it to be a lot better. The food was VERY disappointing. We ordered a sort of caribbean chicken for an appetizer, and it was just dry, overcooked chicken fingers with a Kechup-based dipping sauce. Ugh. I ordered a stuffed sole, and it was so full of bones, I could not even eat it. I was disgusted. The fish was also very "fishy" tasting - NOT FRESH. The mashed potatoes and zucchini, served with it were also pretty bad. The zucchini was very mushy and wattery, and the potatoes had no flavor. My husband was happy with his steak tips though. Came to check it out since they were part of Restraunt Week. Had a 730 reservation, got there a little early (7:15) so we could have a pre-dinner cocktail and check the tavern side out. The hostess told us our table would be ready in about 10 minutes...at 7:45 my husband went to the hostess stand and asked about our table and was told it was almost ready....we were seated a few minutes after that but were told we would have to wait about 5 minutes for our server to come over. There were 2 other tables occupied in the restaurant side and many many empty tables - all of these things should have been red flags. Dinner salad was great, fresh greens and good bleu cheese dressing, I wish I had stopped there. Had the salmon with an herbed butter sauce. it came with mashed potatoes which were definitely instant and asparagus. the salmon was so dry I had a few bites and was all set. husband got sole stuffed with crab meat and that came with the same instant mashed potatoes and asparagus. After finding 5 pin bones...we left the rest untouched. save yourself from this place, looks cool from the outside and maybe would be a great place to sit and have a cocktail and listen to some music in the summer beyond that don't waste your time keep driving up the road a bit in either direction and you'll find a much better option. read more

If yu have not been back to Barnstable Tavern in awhile give them a shot. I was there for lunch and from the moment I entered and was greeted by one of the owners to the time I paid my bill it was a great experience. The new bar is beautiful a handmade unbelievable wood top. The Bartender Shane was informative and cheery. I wanted the Cape Cod Reuben but not fried fish. Shane talked to the Chef owner Bob and he came out to me and asked what preparation I wanted and proceeded to make a great Baked scrod Reuben. My son had a Chicken parmigiano sandwich and it was well made and delicious. With the sun shining in or the gleaming new bar it is well worth another visit. read more

Stumbled on this "lunch" spot on our way home (back roads) from the Cape. Honestly two of us had to us the bathroom really badddd, so we stopped in hopes to find a good place to eat. Overall I was pleased....but.... Not so pleased with the bloody mary's...not enough tomato flavor, and I like spice but the overload of pepper didn't cut it. Very pleased with the calamari appetizer!! Lunches: I ordered the Sicilian salad with an add-on of steak tips, can I just say DON'T do it! Don't get me wrong it was delicious but the salad was $8.95 and the add-on of (3) steak tips was $8.95!!!!!!! Almost twenty dollars for a medium sized salad and (3) steak tips!! Holy Cow! Literally. My boyfriend order the Steak Tip Sandwich which was $12ish but b/c he asked for french fries instead of potato chips - it was an extra $1.50. Another friend ordered the Crab Cake dinner...I tried some - it was delicious although a bit "rich". I think that was $14.95 (good portion and good quality)...then the last person got the Sicilian salad and the mussels is a red spicy sauce...delicious, but again $8.95 each. Moral of my story - pretty darn tasty food but a rip off! The total for "lunch" for 4 people was $120 and some odd change.... The food was good and reasonably priced. My wife and I had the three course menu (only $22, a no brainer) . We ate outside which we always enjoy. I had the clam chowder for a starter and my wife had the shrimp cocktail. we both had the swordfish for an entree. It was very tasty. It came with pineapple salsa, mashed potatoes and asparagus. The only down side was the service. Very slow and inattentive, even by cape cod standards. I'm pretty sure our server was stoned or retarded. Maybe both. Barely said hello when she first came over, didnt tell us the specials or refill the water glasses and came by to ask us how everything was when we were done It didn't wreck the meal, but it's kind of a pain when the hostess comes by more often than the server. From reading the reviews it seems like a mixed bag, some people have good food, bad service, some have good service and bad food. I think they need to get a little more consistent. read more

I had an excellent dinner last night along with 3 guests. I live on the Cape and dine out frequently. This summer I have been fairly unimpressed with the level of service at many Cape restaurants, so it was a pleasure to have the opposite experience from our server, Jacki, who provided exceptional service. I had the sole piccata, which was excellent. Everyone else was equally pleased with their selections and the generous portion size. My wife and I are on the Cape for a getaway Thanksgiving visit and dinner and a mile from where we are staying is the Barnstable Tavern and Restaurant where we have a Thanksgiving reservation. Since it's Wednesday night and we don't know our way around and since the Tavern is so close we thought we'd go there and get a preview of the next days Thanksgiving dinner. Judy was our server and she was fantastic. Sixty seconds after we ordered our soups she brought them to the table. It was SO fast that I said, "What took so long?" She laughed and said something like...."I can't help it. I'm an overachiever!" We all laughed but that set the tone for the rest of our dining experience. She was friendly, attentive and we gave her a great tip. On the way out of the restaurant we stopped at the host stand to see if we could move our Thanksgiving reservation to a tavern booth where we had just eaten rather than the restaurant area but the hostess looked at her reservation page and said that we had been scheduled for a booth in the restaurant area. She offered to show us which booth had been set aside and after seeing it we said that would be fine. While we were speaking with the host Judy must have seen us and she came out and thanked us for our generous tip. I told her that she earned it. So now we were really looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner. When we arrived at the restaurant the next evening after a short wait we were shown to a table. I asked the host if we had somehow lost our booth. She went back to the host stand and when she returned she said that there was no mention of a booth on our reservation. I told her about my conversation with the host on the previous night and she found us a booth. About seven minutes later Geri came to our booth and asked if we wanted something to drink. I asked if we could see a wine list and she said, "Oh, you don't have menus?" Four or five minutes later we got our menus and four or five minutes later we ordered a bottle of wine and placed our dinner orders. Potatoes came with my entree but I said that I'd skip the potatoes. She didn't ask if I wanted to substitute for them. For the next ten minutes we watched her clear tables, take orders and serve food. When she passed by I said, "You didn't forget our wine, did you?" She said, "No I didn't." Two or three minutes later she brought out our appetizers and our bottle of wine. She didn't ask how our appetizers were and when a runner brought our dinners my wife told me that she needed more gravy for her turkey dinner but Geri was nowhere in sight. Of course, I was given potatoes. When Geri finally reappeared we flagged her down and asked for more gravy and she brought some. When she brought our desserts and started to walk away I told her that she could take the bread and potato away, too. During our visit I didn't see Geri smile once and all conversation was limited to the ordering process. By the way, my wife heard the party at the next booth complaining about Geri's service and when she gave them the bill we saw him take his bill with a credit card up to the front rather than wait for her to come back to pick it up. The food was "just okay" but the service ruined our experience and, needless to say, Geri did not follow us out to the host stand to thank us for a generous tip. Two final thoughts. We are not complainers. I'm a mystery-shopper and I try to be objective and fair. I know what good service is and I know what bad service is. Secondly, yes, I do realize that our second visit was on Thanksgiving day but the table for two that was seated three or four minutes before us had finished their appetizers and were enjoying their entrees before we had received our wine....but they had a different server. We went here on a Sunday afternoon (4PM) for a beer and a burger. Sat down at the bar (no one else was at the bar) and told the bartender we came in for a burger. She just smiled(?). Our first sign that we should have left. Turns out the lunch menu ended at 3:30 and no burgers are on the dinner menu. If we wanted a burger, the cook would do it for $18.95. Yikes!!! waste of money. We have gone here twice to eat and a few times for takeout. Just had our first experience this summer for take out. Forgot an entree, the clam plate we ordered, was about 6 clams, no fries although it says they are included on the menu and no tarter sauce. My husband had to run out a second time to correct the barnstable Taverns mistakes, each trip 15 minutes there, 15 minutes home. No apologies on their end. I would not yelp it if it wasnt for the fact that it happened last summer when we did take out. Forgot 2 entrees and we realized it when we got home. But shame on us for going back. The inside of the restaurant needs major renovations, but that said, dining outside on a nice day/evening is good. We hadn't been here in years because there are so many better options in the vicinity but tried it again last night. Service was good, drinks good, and the two entrees we ordered were good. My daughter had the sauteed sea scallops over linguini and husband had meatball pizza. Both were enjoyable. I had the wedge salad. It was good, but the lettuce came out room temperature. No salad should be room temp - for taste and safely reasons. Lettuce should be refrigerated after being picked. We will be happy to go back and eat on their patio. read more
