Matthews is truly a historical restaurant in Tucker Ga. My great aunt worked there for 45 years. When she past, they put a wreath on the door. It was very respectful. The food is simply amazing for a cafeteria style menu. It always has your standard food that just gets better with time. My favorite is country fried steak mashed potatoes peas and a salad along with banana pudding southern style for dessert. I have been going to Matthews for over 50 years myself. What an incredible step back in time. Been living in Atlanta since 1979 and have never visited. My wife and I have seen on Diners Drive Ins and Dives, we heard countless friends talk about this little cafeteria in Tucker so today was the day we decided to visit for lunch. We got there around 11:30am and quickly made it thru the line. The only challenge was what to choose because everything looked great. Between my wife and we had fried chicken, meatloaf, cream corn, Mac & cheese and collard greens. Desert was apple pie. Everything tasted great, they even go light on seasoning so customers can add salt & pepper to their liking vs the cook deciding for you. Wow. Everyone raves about this place, and for good reason. From the moment we walked through the door we felt the welcome and hospitality, and the savory smells of made from scratch home cooking filled our noses. The staff here is friendly, and happy to answer questions. The fried chicken was meaty and crisp- each bite brought a smile. The fried okra was glorious. The cream corn was sweet and tasty. I love a good cafeteria. Actually, I grew up on going to Piccadilly throughout my childhood and still today. I've been to dozens of "Meat-and-Three" places all over the city and I have to see I am not impressed with Matthew's Cafeteria. The fried porkchops had no seasoning and were over-fried. Ordered takeout recently. Customer Service over the phone was terrible, after ordering the lady just hung up the phone. Did not give a total, did not give an ETA on when the food will be ready, or even say goodbye. Just hung up. My fried chicken was tiny. Ordered 2 thighs, but actually received 3 thighs.... I think because they were so small? I would have been fine with 3 small ones if they were good, however, they were extremely dry and almost powdery on the inside. There were gray spots. No amount of hot sauce could make it taste good, so I didn't eat it. My husband's chicken tenders had tender meat, but way under fried. The fried batter was still almost white (instead of a golden brown), no flavor. Mashed potatoes extremely liquidy, that you could drink it through a straw if you wanted. Mac and cheese was the only thing that was okay, but even then it was no better than boxed kraft mac and cheese. We ended up throwing away the food and ordering pizza. read more

I love this place. It's not fancy, but it is exactly what it should be. The food will never win awards, but it's straight up Southern Cafeteria food, with loads of salt and grease and it tastes really good. The breakfast is timeless. It just tastes local. read more

Great old time cafeteria. These places used to be everywhere but now few and far between. I had chicken livers, mashed potatoes and gravy and squash casserole and lemon meringue pie. Stopped there for quick lunch late so there's plenty of sitting on Sunday! As always service fast and friendly. Went for my favorite Southern fried chicken - maybe rest of the parts are done right but the wing I got was close to being dry. Fried okra dark brown and very dry without even knowing it's okra when I ate it. Hot sauce helped for both dishes. Dessert has to be in your meal when you're eating at cafeteria style restaurant. The peach cobbler was mostly crust without much filling it seems. Matthew's is still a good choice to sum it up for quick affordable lunch. Ok this place is adorable. The food tastes like you wish your grandma could cook from the midwest. My first.yeast rolls were awful I told the staff they apologized and got.me fresh ones that were outstanding. Gravy yummy fried chicken crispy outside moist inside. Strawberry shortcake is a must have. Tasted all homemade even the whipped cream. All the veggies the four of.us tried were good, likely canned and seasoned. But at least they were seasoned. I love Matthew's Cafeteria! They are located in downtown Tucker area, but it's one of the few places where they have their own parking (although limited). When you walk in, there's definitely a cafeteria vibe to it. Grab a plate, tray, silverware, and move along the line of delicious meats and sides. I tried the fried pork chop with gravy, fried chicken, sweet potato souffle, greens, and corn muffin. All excellent, but my favorite was probably the sweet potato souffle. I came right before the Thanksgiving holidays and noticed people were all in a separate line just to pick up their sides for Thanksgiving dinner. After you move through the line and pick your food, feel free to sit in the three different dining areas that they have. During the winter, the back dining area is kind of cold, so just be mindful. Service is great, and gratuity is an option. Everyone was very helpful and seemed to actually enjoy being there. I will definitely come back for lunch whenever I'm in the area. read more

The BEST fried chicken, hands down. I really haven't been able to order any other entrees because it is so good. If I go on a day when fried chicken is not on the lunch menu (which I think it is now on the menu every day but didn't used to be the case), I get a vegetable plate because they are all so good too. I have had the squash casserole, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes with and without gravy, lima beans, green beans, turnip greens, black eyed peas and butter beans. Everything is great. Sometimes the mac and cheese requires a little splash of hot sauce or salt but I would rather need to add salt than the mac and cheese be too salty. I also often get a yeast roll because they are sooo good. Everything is a la carte so bread is not included, as it often is at meat and three places. So expect an upcharge if you ask for a piece of cornbread or a yeast roll. On a side note, this place is a community staple that has been here many years and does so much to give back to the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they created a drive thru system that was so creative and made eating there feel so safe. They also teamed with other local businesses and provided free meals to healthcare workers. This is a great restaurant and I hope they are around as long as they want to be! Yeah I love the old time ,southern charm ,cafeteria style food but the prices have gone up way too high, it's not worth the quality of food you're getting, so I enjoy it when I go but I don't go often because it's just too expensive really , Ever since they got their spot on diners drive-ins and dives it went to their heads I guess, just like Mary Macs down on Ponce. Everything's very southern about both locations except for the prices, none of the poor Southerners can afford to eat at the southern restaurant anymore... Editing my review, as I said the prices are bringing me down, I went there the other day and actually complained to one of the workers that none of the food even has a price on it, they don't let you know what it's gonna cost for a meat and two vegetables , I told the lady it's not cool that you don't know what you're going to pay until you get up to the counter and get sticker shock, she actually looked right at me and just shrugged and left, went into the restaurant and no prices are to be found written on boards or menus anywhere, talked to an older gentleman there who said he got some fried chicken livers, two sides some pie and a drink ,got up to the register and cost him 20 bucks, these plates they're serving the food on are not big. Seems like more of a novelty item so the wealthier people in the area can come and play pretend that they're living in the old South. Hi. My name is Tiffany. And I am a fried chicken addict. Matthew's Cafeteria is a cafeteria, which is pretty self explanatory, given the name. I went on a Sunday afternoon around 1 PM and the line wove toward the door. However, the line moved relatively quickly, and it gave us some time to decide what we wanted to eat. Seating isn't too hard to find, being a cafeteria. There are many large tables that are good for large groups. We were able to seat our entire table of 6, and noticed that there were groups double our size eating together at one table. First, the desserts and appetizers. Why they put desserts at the beginning of the line is beyond me... I picked out a pecan pie, although I struggled to choose a dessert out of all the other desserts on display. I didn't pick up an appetizer, which includes Next were the meats. I couldn't choose between the fried chicken and the fried pork chop, so I got both! I got a chicken thigh (dark meat) and a pork chop. Most reviews complained that the meat was dry and overlooked from the overhead lamps, but I fortunately did not have that problem. They ran out of chicken thighs when I got to that part of the line so they brought out fresh ones directly to our table for those who ordered them. The hot sides were at the end of the line, where I picked the creamed corn and the mac and cheese. Chicken Thigh - hot and crispy and juicy. Perfect 5. Pork Chop - tender and crispy and easy to cut. Even better with a dash of hot sauce. Creamed Corn - Just ok, wasn't a huge fan. It had a grits-esque consistency that I didn't really appreciate. Mac and Cheese - really hit the spot. However, it was just average and nothing special. Pecan Pie - Loved it. Super sweet and rich, it was just slightly too big for one person after the full meal that I had. I've had better, but this really hit the spot. This is very close to my church so don't be surprised to find me here every Sunday afternoon. read more

Happened to be nearby for soccer so I dropped in for a piece of chicken since I didn't have time to sit down for a meal. Note: there is a carry out line that is shorter than the dine in line. I didn't know that, but was helped by the staff anyway. The chicken had been sitting a while (it was 30 minutes to closing), but it was still crispy and tender. What can I say about this place - other than run there immediately if you've never tried it out! The food is delicious, the pricing is reasonable, and the staff is always friendly. They have daily specials which I love because every time you go, you can try something different. My grandmother, who owned 2 restaurants of her own and tends to be picky as a result, loved the food. The last time we visited, she ordered the beef tips and mashed potatoes. She said it tasted exactly as it would if she had made it at home!! If it was closer to our house, we'd probably be there several days a week! read more

It was okay. We used to live in Tucker, and never made it to Matthew's although we kept hearing about it. So the last time we were in Tucker, my husband and I stopped by. It was a little later at lunch time. We weren't sure where to start or exactly how it worked. I think that's mostly why I took stars off. Everything was pretty tasty. This place deserves 0 stars as it's terrible food. Everything tastes bland or overcooked and shouldn't be considering we got there at the start of lunch. You could def tell everything was cooked the day before not fresh! Not sure how anyone can eat any of this and I mean every item we had was bad. We ordered two completely different meals and the fried chicken. I had the salmon crochettes with Mac and cheese and turnip greens. The other plate we ordered was the fried chicken and pork with rice and gravy and cabbage. I've been hearing about this place so when we were in the area my husband and I decided to try it - it's gross. My husband got fried chicken that was so dry it was like the Turkey in that National Lampoons Christmas movie. The mashed potatoes are thin and runny. The cornbread is so over baked you need to be a stone mason to cut it. I got a veggie plate. The potato casserole was good. The Mac and cheese was just ok. The squash casserole was bland. I can do better at home. The tea is weak. Think sugar flavored water . Portions are good and the price is reasonable but the food just isn't good. Maybe people keep coming here because they are nostalgic and meat and threes are drying up all over metro Atlanta. Unfortunately we won't be back. read more

My problem is not with the food or the ambiance, it is with the mask mandates.They have signs now that require all patrons to wear masks. But if you look inside at the different dining tables, nary a mask while people are eating. You can see people sitting and eating without masks on. So apparently this virus is smart enough to know when people are sitting and eating, and when they are walking and standing in line. There is also the arbitrary demarcation of people that you know who you sit with, and people you don't know that you socially distance yourself from. When was the last time you sat down with someone you knew...not knowing who else they hung out with since the last time you saw them? If you are going to have mask mandates, make it for the complete restaurant, not just the line. Maybe open seating outdoors. The idea of eating in a enclosed space with poor ventilation sounds to me like a conflict of messaging. So...masks on walking in...masks off eating...masks on getting up or walking around. This assumes the virus does not travel in it's aerosol form. read more
