Very Disappointed with the Service and Food! The staff was NOT friendly. Went with my family to this diner and nobody was able to finish their food because it poorly prepared and under cooked. Ordered omelet with potatoes. The potatoes seemed like I was eating cardboard and the omelet was runny. Very expense for the type of food and service. Overall, I would not put another foot in this diner. The manager had nothing good to say when paying the bill and was giving attitude. I'm a pretty low maintenance diner, but my biggest pet peeves are not getting drink refills in a reasonable time. I had to BEG for a water refill (they those tiny glasses) never got a coffee refill no one brought my check over, nor checked on me the entire time except once, when I flagged her down after I'd been sitting without water or coffee for a solid 10 minutes. The home fries ... I found them dry, lacking flavor, and the texture was weird. They were basically crumbled up. Not quite a patty, not quite cubes. Not even ketchup could save them. The eggs bennies were pretty solid. Good hollandaise. Very tangy, which is exactly how I like it. Good hollandaise deserves two stars. But I again ran out of water (what is with the tiny glasses?!) was done eating, and over this diner. So I waited for a few more minutes for my check, and finally had to go ask someone else for it. I just cannot get over the service. I wish I was exaggerating, but I spent half of my time sitting in the diner without a glass of water or coffee (or they were both empty.) if you can't remember to check on your diners once or twice, at least give them tall glasses for water/other beverages. read more

9/23/15 - today, I wanted a turkey burger deluxe with a replacement of mixed greens for the French fries. They actually gave me a hard time about making that switch. The manager actually tried to tell me that the price of 10 pounds of french fries was less than the price of 8 pounds of tomatoes, and the tomatoes were almost three times the price of the potatoes. This would be great, if I had intended to eat 8 pounds of tomatoes! Since I was only asking for a small amount of greens, this guy was totally off base. Every other diner in the area will gladly switch a small amount of greens for french fries. As a diabetic, the greens are much more in line with what I can eat. The carbohydrates of the French fries would skew my blood sugar to the point of requiring additional medication. Eventually, he gave in. But not without some gnashing of teeth and moaning uncontrollably. I am NOT a jerk water customer. I personally hold a servsafe certification and work in the service industry at times. Be careful who you try to BS, they may know more than you think. read more

On a cool Sunday after a late Mass I can't think of a better place than Matthews Diner. So what if there's a line to get in and the crowd is pretty darn loud. I got a great batch of pancakes and home fries and the portions were big enough for me to barely finish with all of my buttons buttoned - and I've got a pretty good appetite. It's got enough standbys for regular diner patrons and sweet gooey stuff to satisfy the kiddies. Although it was crowded the waitstaff was fast and never acted like they were rushing us out. Coffee wasn't overly strong (a minus, in my book) but the place was enjoyable, nonetheless. I'll certainly be back, maybe to try lunch next time. read more

One of the better diners in the area. My personal favorite are their pancakes, which are some of the best I've found anywhere. Other menu items are also pretty good from my experience, which consists of all the typical "diner foods" like burgers, omelets, etc. Service is always pretty quick no matter what time of day I have gone. It's cute, average diner-faire. Is it amazing? No. I didn't expect it to be. I got a nice omelette there, with coffee and oj and some other stuff for like 7 dollars, which is pretty solid. I've been to quite a few diners in my day and this place is probably in the upper half of the all time greatest. A nice quaint little place with quality food and quality service. You can just tell right off the bat it's a family owned restaurant so they really do care for their customers and want to provide the best service possible. I always get an omelette when I go, and I can't complain because it's pretty good. An old standby that is reliable, good food at a good price. Today we three went to Matthews Diner for breakfast. We had not been for a while. First of all, the waiter was not warm and friendly. He said and did as little as possible. Two of us ordered blueberry muffins and waited a long time for them. Then a waitress came and said they only had one left (at 9am in the morning).I changed mine then to a corn muffin. Both of us could not eat them-they were dry and stale. No one came to ask if everything was okay. We had to wait and wait for a second cup of coffee. When we complained to a waitress and the man at the cashier's desk, no one offered any compensation or even said they were sorry. We had to pay for muffins we could not and did not eat. This is my first time eating at this diner. I ordered a cup of chicken noodle soup and fried chicken. The noodles were very mushy. The soup flavor was okay. The fried chicken was good. The skin was crispy, the chicken was moist and had a sweetness to it. The French fries were generic ones. They could've fried those a bit longer. NEVER EAT AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT!! After reading mixed reviews from my fellow yelpers, I decided to take a chance and go to Matthews for dinner. Biggest mistake of my life, and that's saying a lot considering I grew up in Mombasa. Trust me when I say, do not eat at this place. If I were starving to death and had to choose between Matthews Colonial Diner and walking on a mile of broken glass to get half of a 4 month old Big Mac, I would choose the latter option. It truly was that bad. I ordered Belgian waffles with fruit thinking, "how hard could it be? after all, it is just cooked pre-made BATTER with chopped up fruit and the fruit is not even the chef's doing; it's made by NATURE." Big mistake. I've tasted better waffles back home, where there is more dirt than flour in them. The fruit was so unripe and sour that I couldn't even finish the waffles. Among the other foods that were ordered were cheese fries and ravioli. Within three hours of eating, ALL OF US GOT SICK! I'm not just talking about your standard diarrhea food poisoning. I'm talking about the explosive works that Americans see on the fourth of july. It's the food poisoning that hurts more coming out than it did coming in, which is even worse because the chef might have been blind. The food isn't the only bad thing, though. The wait staff is extremely inattentive and we were never asked, even once, if we would like to have our drinks refilled. Not. Even. Once. I wanted to express how unhappy about my food, but I wasn't able to since our waiter never even checked up on us. It was very disappointing. Not to mention, the lavatories were horrible. You can't even access one of the two stalls if the urinals are occupied. Who was the architect? Bob the builder?! Also, the paper towels were out. At a very minimum, I expected this first-world country to have a means to dry my hands with. I hope not all restaurants in the states are like this. Perhaps the only one redeeming quality about this restaurant was the attractive hostess. Man, could she "work her booty" as Little John says. I personally love Mathews Diners. Never once have I had a bad meal there and ive been going since I was a child . The staff are intelligent and well versed on the menu and you can tell the owners really care about there customers by checking on food quality and timeliness often . All these poor reviews I have seen just go to show that some people have nothing better to do than attempt to bash a family run and well maintained restaurants reputation. I would and have recommended this establishment to all of my friends and family. The entire bottom of the omelette was coated in pancake batter. We had a horrible experience here last week. I ordered tea with milk, I was given a cup of tea with lemon. I reminded my waitress that I had requested milk, and by the time it reached the table, the tea was cold. I had to remind her for the water we had ordered as soon as we sat down. My friend ordered buffalo wings, she was given chicken wings with no buffalo sauce. They redid her order, and...she found a hair in her food. Our waitress was rude and asked us, "What do you want me to do about it?" when we pointed out a hair in our food. After we finished eating, we waited 20 min for our check, and had to flag down our waitress because she was nowhere near our table. After rolling her eyes at us, she said "Didn't I already leave the bill on the table?" Obviously no, since we're asking you for it. I've never had such poor service at a diner.
