This is one of the staple restaurants around where I grew up. My childhood friends and I come here pretty frequently, and we've been coming for years. Matthew's is just a classic suburban diner. Food isn't off the charts, but it's very comforting. The prices here are pretty good- but I think that's just because I'm used to Manhattan prices. I've gotten the Chicken Waffle Benedict a few times now. The egg and hash browns are always cooked well. The waffle doesn't have much flavor, however. The chicken is okay. The waffle and chicken end up getting soggy unless you eat your meal extremely quickly. I usually have to douse everything in syrup so it has some flavor - and I'm not one to normally do that. The service is usually very fast and the workers are nice. You have to pay at the counter, which I would say is very standard with diners. Not much more to say about that. AGAIN- this restaurant is a classic. I will always end up coming back here no matter how average the food is. read more

Very nice diner in Waldwick. It's very clean and the staff is friendly and accommodating. We came here with our kids for lunch, and felt very safe dining indoors. The portions are quite large, and the prices are reasonable. I created my own omelette, and it tasted very fresh. The kids got different burgers and wraps and they were very happy! The servers were patient with us, as we stayed for over 2 hours eating and chatting and they still gave us free coffee refills :) They have a lot of parking in the back, which is amazing. The diner is located in a really nice area of NJ. Almost looks like an inviting house when you pull up to it. The parking lot is usually pretty full, but the parking lot is big, so you'll always get a spot. Cozy atmosphere inside. It's decorated particularly nice and homey for Christmas. There's a nice tree by the fireplace, along with all the other Christmas accents everywhere. The food is good. So far, everything I've tried has been enjoyable. Located next door to the Hermitage in Waldwick, my partner, our friends and I came tonight to this award winning establishment by 201 Magazine's Best of Bergen 2021 for best diner. Upon arrival, we were able to get a table for 5 with no wait. It's very clean, the staff is friendly and accommodating like our server, Rosanna. We had ordered one of their specials - the chicken française sautéed in a lemon butter wine sauce served with rice which came with a soup or salad and dessert, Fettuccini Alfredo with added chicken which came with a salad and Portobello panini consisting of slices Portobello Mushrooms, Roasted Red Peppers, Tomato, Mozzarella Cheese, Mixed Greens & Basil Mayo with huge sweet potato fries. Food came out fairly quickly and the quality was excellent. Portions are HUGE and the prices are reasonable. They have a sizable parking in the back. Came here with friends who insisted we go to a Nj diner. We came with a group of 4 and a toddler at prime breakfast time and didn't have any issue with being seated. The menu is approachable for a diner and everything we got was delicious. Had a great omelette with cheese and lots of veggies. We shared chocolate chip pancakes for the table and they were great! I stopped at this diner after an afternoon of apple picking in New Jersey. The servers were nice and friendly, we got our food in a reasonable time frame and the place looked clean and cozy. I skipped lunch so I was VERY hungry and decided to order a Deluxe Hamburger which comes with lettuce, tomatoes, French fries, cole slaw, and a pickle. The first half of the burger tasted pretty good! I asked for medium rare and they nailed it. But toward the second half of my meal I started tasting how greasy the food was and I felt a little gross after eating this. I didn't even finish my fries. Overall is a pretty good place and I can't complain about the prices (my meal came out to $8.75 + tax and tip. A pretty good deal!). It's a diner. 3.5 stars... I haven't actually dined here in-person yet but just moved to town and recently had breakfast as a take-out. The place is gorgeous though (both inside and out). Really the cleanest and nicest looking diner I've come across in quite some time. The blueberry pancakes are excellent. You could tell they didn't use low quality tiny frozen blueberries like a lot of diners to. My wife is a fan of their lunch wraps. The corned beef hash on the other hand was either from a can or made to replicate the quality of it. Real pet food mush for the meat. The quantity you get is massive but with the quality being as low as it is, it barely matters. The omelets also fall a bit flat, quite literally. As far as their overall rating goes on Yelp, just pay attention to what people are ordering. This is a diner, don't expect fine dining or excellence in everything on the menu. Find what they do well (like pancakes) and stick to it and you'll be a happy customer. read more

This is our go to spot. There is an immediate "welcome home" feeling when you walk in. The staff is extremely welcoming and accommodating. I know it says diner in the name; however, that doesn't do it justice. The hardest thing whenever we come is deciding what to get, which in this case is a good thing. Matthews was a staple of Ridgewood. "was" I was so disappointed the last few outings. However, I kept coming back thinking it was a fluke. What happened to Matthews? This was my final meal. How it went down today. I almost left because I waited for 10 minutes to get my order taken. I would have had to wait longer if I Gadsby flagged someone down to begin with. I guess there most of been some type of confusion or the man taking my order is deaf because there was no chicken in the wrap. Look - host was far from pleasant, seemed like it annoyed him that we were even there when he seated us. Still, our server was excellent, attentive & pleasant. Food got to us quickly with the right amount of time for us to enjoy, then we both ordered the rice pudding for dessert. My friend's order came with not only a long hair on the plate, discovered immediately & which the server removed, but a minute later she found a very long hair buried under the whipped cream. Gross. Matthews has always been one of our favorite diners and now during Covid even more. I am very concerned that eateries I dine at follow the proper protocol. Out of all the restaurants in the area , I have been to Matthews has been the best. Tables are spaced six feet apart. There is hand sanitizer when you enter the tent. They have 4 levels of cleaning the table between patrons. They take off the old 3 ply table cloths which include a plastic layer as well and the smell of the Clorox cleaner is evident when they spray down the table and replace the 3 ply table cloths. They provide all new paper menus and individually wrapped paper napkins with clean silverware. The food is and and always has been consistently good. I miss their delicious salad bar but that is because of the times. The staff could not be better or more attentive. Spiro the owner seems to always be there with his smiling eyes( behind his mask) happy to welcome everyone as family. So if you have not been out or have had a bad experience during covid eating out try Matthews. You will feel safe and confident. read more

My wife and I took in lunch on a holiday Monday at noonish and wow was it packed - which instantly tells you the food is good or it's priced right! Well, I do have to admit the food tasted very good, very nice portion was served, and polite service was rendered. I ordered their Greek Salad, which consisted of Feta Cheese, Olives, Romaine Lettuce, Tomatos, Hard Boiled Egg, Cucumbers, Onions, Stuffed Grape Leaves, Anchovies & Peppers with Our Homemade Greek Salad Dressing - and I added Grilled Chicken. The Grape Leaves were some of the best I've had! I loved their homemade Salad Dressing as well. It also came with warm pita slices that's not listed... Of note: We left right before 1 and the line was out the door waiting...... Pro's: - Fast, courteous service. - Hearty Portions. I looked at other entries being served and they looked very filling as well. Con's: - Just a tad too high priced for a Salad. $12 without a chicken breast; $15 with. Salad did its job and filled my belly - but a $15 dollar bill is tough to swallow for a salad... Two salad's and a tea shouldn't cost almost $40 w/tip. And I know what I was going to pay for a Salad, so you salad Nazi's leave me alone lol..... Bottom line.... A typical Jersey diner. Good food, fast service. It's definitely in the top half of diners I've been to in my time. Giving it 3 stars is due to the high prices, parking can be a chore if it's busy, and I hate to say, my silverware was dirty :-( The only thing that will keep me from coming back is the high prices, but I can honestly say, you do get your money's worth here and you most likely won't leave hungry. I'm a local and my family has been to a lot of diners and restaurants in the area. This is a diner where you pay for the food, and get a terrible experience. That's just it, plainly, no BS. We came in to meet our family (albeit five minutes later than them), and the owner sat at the bar staring at us while we ate in disapproval. When the food came out, the Canadian Bacon was bad and sour and clearly not to serving standards, but was served anyway. We told them about this, and the waitress promptly brought us out some bacon as a replacement (strictly because we requested, it was not offered). We finished eating, and paid. Finally, we get up from our table to ask the man at the front to split our $20 bill so that we could tip our waitress. He's sitting at a diner table, reading his newspaper, and is clearly disgruntled and unhappy that we have disrupted his reading time. He says "what do you want" and we explain that we'd like to split our $20 for the tip. He starts fretting and fraying, acting like he's doing us some big favor. Finally he mumbles a clearly derogatory comment under his breath, to which I say "What did you just say?" and he says "Oh, nothing. I'm just talking to myself!" in a snide and sarcastic way. We just wanted to eat breakfast, tip our waitress, and start our Saturday morning off nicely. If these people don't like their jobs, they're doing a really great job at offering poor service to guarantee that they don't have them in the future. But I guess location is location - and you can't take that away. For that reason they'll continue to get business from people. P.S. Our waitress was fine - we tipped fairly because it was not her fault. But my family and I will not be going here again. I'd recommend you do the same. read more

Really 1.75 stars. Mediocre diner food. I've eaten here numerous times and I almost always came away unimpressed. Salad bar is good, but the beets and other pickled items sometimes have a weird rancid taste to them. Service is lackluster. Last night might have been my worst experience here though. I ordered a medium strip steak that came to the table sinuous and tough. The meat was butchered terribly, and was uneven in thickness: the edible part of the steak was about an inch and a half thick in the center, but the surrounding meat was about a quarter of an inch...it looked like my steak had a bubble in it. It was hard to chew and had very little flavor. Only half the steak was edible. Experiences like these are the reason why I almost never order steak when I go out. I won't be returning. read more

This is your typical north Jersey diner. It's pretty close to my house and it's open late, until 1am. Service was friendly, if a bit slow for 11pm on a Wednesday. It was also surprisingly packed, with kids home from college and local adults as well. The coffee at this hour tasted bitter and burnt as hell. I've had breakfast here a few times, usually corned beef hash and eggs. I've also had their cheese fries as a somewhat frequent late night snack. Their breakfast is delicious and filling, but I love coming here to eat lunch and dinner as well. My favorites include their pita sandwiches, burgers, and lamb kabob. I especially love the salad bar option here - a great selection of fresh vegetables and dressings. Also, their fries are ADDICTIVE, both the regular ones and the sweet potato ones. There are 3 diners in my town within a 2 mile radius from my house, but I am so glad I went the extra couple of miles to Matthews. My standard diner fare typically consists of A turkey or grilled chicken club, with or without sweet potato friends, depending on how hungry I am. We got nachos first, which is atypical, but we were starving and they were really good! My grilled chicken club came with blt, avocado and swiss plus a side of glorious sunshine - I loved it. When our server came back, and I showed it to her she agreed and went back to the kitchen and brought me back a small dish of bacon. The bacon was barely cooked and was inedible.
