First and foremost our server mattan was alright, very slow its wasn't busy. Me and my wife have been serving for over 10 years and this was just a bad experience. Our first time we came was great so we decided to come back and very much regret it. Our food was cold and my pancakes were raw still, my wife's bacon was burnt, grits were cold. My sweet potato fries were cold and hard. We will not be coming back the server never asked if everything was okay even seeing we barely ate our food and had it all stacked up on the edge. They took forever to even attempt to take our bill and my wife got sick of waiting so we paid online. Also side note we had to wait about 8 minutes to get silverware to get eat our food as our server walked past us like 3 times. I would consider myself a diner enthusiast. I love a good simple, no frills diner. I was super excited for Mattie's as it is walking distance and seemed to fit the description above. I have been here 5 times (really attempting to give it a fair try with it opening recently) 3 times for breakfast, once for lunch, and once for dinner. Breakfast: I typically order 2 eggs sunny side up, extra crispy- well done bacon, and rye toast. I've ordered this twice from Mattie's, and how is it acceptable to only be served one piece of toast? Both times I've ordered the bacon very well done - and it has come back rubbery. The theme of my review comes down to the small portions served. Only 1 piece of toast and 2 pieces of bacon and no home fries were served with the omelette. (Which would maybe be okay if prices weren't the same as lunch/dinner) Lunch/ Dinner: Definitely would recommend going here for lunch/dinner instead of breakfast. Better value. Got a sandwich one time and fried chicken the next, which were both solid. Again, there are better places close by but it's a good option if you don't want to cook. Again, I want to love this place so much- (design, location, using fresh herbs) but it needs some improvement to be great. read more

This morning 5.5.23 I ordered the P 90 with extra onions with a side of small grits and toast. Total around $16 dollars! This was soooooo good! This is my second meal from this location. And both times I have enjoyed my meal! The portion size was also worth the price! The staff is so friendly and super quick. The chefs behind the counter are great and are so friendly and checked on me the entire time I waited on my order to be prepared. My order was ready in about 10 minutes and packed so that when I arrived at my location (about 10 minutes away) it was still hot! I have nothing but great things to say about this location. I have been so excited to try the new local diner in my neighborhood, but honestly I couldn't be more disappointed. As someone that has worked in service myself this was honestly some of the worst service I've seen in Charlotte. We came in and were told to seat ourselves. We selected a patio seat and waited over 10 minutes for a server to literally throw down menus at our table and say nothing. She came back 5 minutes later, didn't introduce herself, ask how we were doing or anything and took our drink order. We waited over 20 minutes for a very simple breakfast order. Not only did my food came out incorrect, but we had to request anything needed versus our server just asking if we needed anything. This included silver ware, syrup, and hot sauce. Things that we shouldn't have needed to ask for in the first place. Then I had to go to another table and get butter and jelly from them cause our server was so inattentive so she never noticed me trying to get her attention multiple times. Separate from the service, the food was subpar. Nothing we had we thought was better than ok. As mentioned I could not wait to try this place, but I don't think I would be back. We couldn't even stay here due to the fact that there is no AC! I don't know how anywhere could think it is appropriate to have a restaurant without AC in a climate that regularly has summer days that are 90-100 degrees with high humidity. We asked the server if the restaurant had AC because it was terribly hot and humid and the server said no, we just have fans. It's bad. I feel bad for the employees who have to work in those conditions not to mention a kitchen that is already putting off heat. My friend was so happy to have the dinner back, however, plates are pretty small for the price. Also, having eaten a late lunch, I requested a kids meal only to be denied. The server activate she was so miserable taking care of our party of 7.. When she brought our drink she set them all-in-one spot and told us to take care of who gets which drink. They brought the food out very slowly. When we asked her to split the checks she's she said ""of course you want me to split your checks" and rolled her eyes. When she returned, she handed all of the checks to one person and said "here, you can figure it out". It wasn't busy and we were very nice to her in spite of the attitude. I've visited this neat little spot twice now. I am a Pennsylvania native, so I love a good diner. Initially, I picked this place because it had really good vegan options to choose from and one of the members of my party is vegan. His only complaint was that he didn't get the milkshake. Upon my second return, I had brunch with a sister from New Jersey. She too felt it was very authentic and loved the diner feel. She had the salmon bowl. Sausage patties with grits she had grits to the grits are amazing creamy with just enough butter. The French toast was pretty good. I do wish they would have Chris buy sausage patties but I understand not everyone is willing to almost burned food. This place is not Southern but their tea is. I love the East coast vibe and variety of foods. I also love that I can eat inside, outside, or kind of in between. I would highly recommend this place for food atmosphere, service, and aesthetics. The only con is the awful parking when the place is full. Many people use the Food Lion parking lot as overflow. Recently, they have been open normal hours to which is really nice for a Sunday brunch. read more

This cozy eating establishment is situated on The Plaza in a shining relic of yesteryear, a polished chrome and glass railroad diner car. The car is joined up with the renovated and retrofitted shell of an old service station which serves to seriously expand the seating capacity as well as let in lots of fresh air, a necessity in these times and global pandemic. While the diner car portion of the place is a bit noisy due to the close confines (a feature, not a flaw) those sensitive to clamour might choose a quieter spot in the back. The offerings on the menu were familiar yet we found everything flavored with a little bit of YANKEE SPICE AND ATTITUDE -- and we found it suited us. Since the doctor had just placed her on a restricted diet, Agent H steered clear of the heavy stuff and ordered from the vegetarian menu. "Yum!" she said. I had very much the same reaction when I dug into the meatballs I ordered for myself. The fries were crispy and the gravy a savory treat. Our only disappointment was learning we would have to come back to try the milkshakes another time. Oh well . . . Can't wait! I had vegan meatloaf, omgggg it was really delicious. Gonna have to try to recreate and make my own vegan meatloaf recipe. Had mashed potatoes, they were chunky and couldn't taste garlic. The seasoned greens were sweet and tasty but could've been more tender. So many vegan items on the menu. I'll go back. And it's a diner car moved from boundbrook nj, perfect for me being a Jersey girl! It could've been done nicer but it's ok... small lot and not a lot of parking. Bathrooms need cleaning lol. Only opened 5 days, and service was slow. When we were finally seated and helped, the waitress was really helpful and sweet. But I'd still go again. I want to try vegan pastrami Reuben, vegan eggs, and lots of other options. Hubby had breakfast and he loved it all. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, and grits. Food left on counter for waitresses to serve and they talk a lot over the food. We've been looking for a real American, greasy spoon, diner for a long time. We live in Rock Hill, SC, now, but we like travel the area for different restaurants. We've eaten here a couple of times. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun! Someone else on Yelp hit it right on the nose saying the place has a little "Yankee seasoning & attitude". I was so excited to be invited to dinner at this restaurant. After seeing posts about this restaurant for the last year, I couldn't wait to try some great food! I was very dissatisfied. The restaurant does not have ac which lost my appetite, because who gets hungry when you're sweating indoors? The poor waitress said "you think it's hot in the garage bay, just be glad you aren't in the indoor section". Like what kind of owner lets his customers and staff be like that all summer?! The food was bland and very dry. I had the salmon blt. Salmon was very dry and unseasoned. One strip of bacon was very soft and flimsy and the other super crunchy. I ordered fries with mine and received about 4 whole fries and about 10 small (1" long) pieces, while a friend who ordered fries received a whole pile. The bathroom was grungy and musky because of the again no ac. We are in Charlotte and it is 2022, it's hot af and super muggy! The waitress we had was SUPER nice, which is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars. I really really hate that it was not a pleasant experience.
