The hog and chick is where it's at! If there's one thing in the menu you have to try that you can't get anywhere else it's the peppered bacon and the sour dough toast. It's very unique here. The toast is very think and they have the best jam. And the bacon is thick cut and very peppery. The rest is pretty classic shredded hash browns. Eggs how you like them. They used cheese slices on the omelette and I would bet it was a private label cheese. Too much and didn't taste good at all. Delicious breakfast choices at this local spot. Because my son is named Matt, I felt compelled to give this place a try. He even scored a souvenir t-shirt (although there's some question that he'll ever wear it. On this early morning, the place was 1/3 full with locals; always a positive sign of good food. There are about 20 tables, plus a few outside in this strip mall location. Service was quick, efficient, if a bit brusque. I tried the Hog & Chick - Two eggs, with bacon & sourdough toast. I passed on the potatoes, which are included. Eggs fried perfectly sunny side up, with yolk thickened but not hard. The bacon is peppered and thick cut, in nice big slices. A cup of strawberry jam is served with the bread - tart and thick, almost like a compote. Delicious on that sourdough. Amy had The Skinny - Four egg whites scrambled with gruyere cheese and baby spinach and chunks of chicken apple sausage. Instead of bread, sliced tomatoes. The scramble was light and fluffy, spinach al dente. The sausage added a little texture, adding an earthy but not overpowering taste. My wife had an eye surgery this morning and we needed to be on Phoenix. We live in East Mesa. I yelped a few places to eat nearby before the surgery. This was the closest with the best ratings. We pulled up and when we got out of the car we smelled a beautiful smell of bacon! I was thrilled the minute I smelt the bacon. We got in at 7:10 am, plenty of seating, menu was small with few options but they look like fabulous options. It reminded me of when Gordon Ramsay limited menus having them focus on less. I ordered the big papa burrito because they described it so nicely that I had to. My wife ordered eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. I took a bite of her toast and ended up stealing a piece. Amazing bread! I took a bit of my bacon! Couldn't have loved it more! I then took bites of my burrito and the chorizo, jalapeño eggs potatoes all perfect! I loved every single bite and so did my wife.I wished I lived closer. I'd eat here more often. It will remain a 5 star and I hope everyone try's the food! It's a little pricey but I believe worth every cent. My only bad points are this the bathroom. It's one bathroom for all. A man peed on the toilet and I guess it's my job to clean it with the cleaning supplies in the bathroom, so I can sit down. I know you can't always judge a restaurant by its food when you get takeout, but unfortunately we had a very disappointing experience with our takeout this morning from Matt's. I ordered the simple breakfast classic The Hog and Chick. My sunnyside up eggs were extremely under cooked, runny whites and parts were discolored a green or gray color. I did not eat this. Ended up cutting off the green area and gave to my dog. The hashbrowns were terribly greasy and had so much pepper I couldn't eat them as well. I'm spice adverse so I look out for any kind of mention of seasoning when reading menu items and try to steer clear. As for the bacon it was thick cut bacon as described on the menu, but again it was crusted with tons of pepper, which I wasn't expecting, so I gave that to my husband. As for my husband (no issue with spices) he had The Big Papa Burrito. He said it was good but since the restaurant put the rancho sauce on the burrito instead of putting on the side the tortilla was completely soggy and unappealing by the time we got it home and we were ready to eat. I understand sometimes the customer need to ask for sauce or dressing on the side if that is their preference to keep the quantity regulated when eating the item, but I would think this was a no brainer for this kind of item if it's to-go. Just a suggestion. Also the shredded cheese they put on top of the sauce on the burrito was cold and un-melted.... not very appetizing. Maybe our experience would be different for a sit down meal, but for now I know I won't be ordering takeout from here again. read more

Finally got the chance to try the infamous Matt's Big Breakfast and I am so happy I did! All of the servers were very kind and attentive during our meal. I appreciate the precautions they're following in lieu of COVID19. The tables are spaced apart to allow social distancing and feature a pump-able hand sanitizer, as pictured. They even have deli sheets to use for opening the doors to the restroom. I ordered an omelette with hash-brown and a side of bacon. It was a admittedly a lot of food but my spouse helped me! My omelette was perfectly prepared with yummy Wisconsin cheddar and mushroom. You have the option of customizing your omelette with choice of 3 different cheeses and a variety of veggies; each customization is $1, but fret not because the prices are reasonable. The fresh wheat bread with homemade jam was a lovely touch. I especially loved the thickness of the bacon. Did I mention everything is made from scratch? Tips: Do not skip fresh squeezed honey lemonade. It is so wonderful that I wish they sold it by the gallon. Also, it is open seating so feel free to seat yourself upon entry. read more

We tried Matt's on a Saturday morning as we were in town for some baseball games. There was a wait. But of course, that's a good sign. Right?.. We waited patiently for about 40 minutes. Then we got a table inside. Coffee? Decent. Fresh OJ? Delicious. The rest of the meal was good but just not quite great. I got the Chop and Chick which is a pork chop with eggs (duh). The pork chop was seasoned nicely but kinda tough. I was rocking the table trying to cut it with their oversized steak knife which seemed a bit too big for the job. I'd ordered my hash browns well done and they were dark on the outer layer but quite grey and mushy in the middle. Not great. The home fries were also cooked unevenly. They were cut in different sizes so some were undercooked. Eggs were fine and the jam and toast were VERY good. The pancakes were also very tasty and fluffy) kid approved) and so was the nice thick bacon. The menu listed RC cola as the only soda option (go figure) but after inquiring we got a Boylan's cane cola. Gotta update those paper menus. First time at MBB! My partner and I chose bar seating instead of a 15 minute wait for a table. The crew was busy with customers, but they came by every so often to provide us with hot coffee. It all started when we were seated, we were left for quite some time until we were even given any water. The orange juice was warmer than usual and not that refreshing. We finally ordered our food but it must have gotten lost? We watched 3 tables who all were seated and ordered after us get their food way before us. We never even received a refill on our water after asking twice. The hostess finally filled it after we were done eating. We then began the long wait for our check. Excellent breakfast. All cooked to perfection. I had over easy eggs and sweet post sausage with cheese while wheat toast and hash browns. Thick slice of toast and the hash browns were crisp and tasty. Of course I can't leave out the home made straw berry preserves. Everything worked well together. As is well-documented by the myriad check-ins at the Marina Heights MBB -- where my Dukedom lies in dormancy -- and now my quarantine-era Dukedom at the Downtown Phoenix MBB, I am a fan of Matt's. Every Sunday, my girlfriend and I order omelets with American cheese, bacon, peppers, mushrooms, with home fries and wheat toast as the sides. Since the temporary closures of all but Downtown and Biltmore, we have kept up our tradition, only to-go. | Proximity and Purchase | This morning, we were unable to reach the Downtown MBB to place our order (the line was busy). So, having never been, we decided to give Biltmore Plaza a shot. They picked up the phone immediately, took our order, and advised our Sunday breakfast would be ready in twenty minutes. Bravo. Turns out the Biltmore location takes almost the same amount of time it would take for us to get downtown; this may become our new Sunday activity going forward! Biltmore Plaza is a nice location (after you've traversed all the nonsense on 32nd Street), with a towering Safeway and plenty of small shops around. When we arrived, we were delighted to see a couple elderly folks sitting outside with their to-go boxes, enjoying their meal and having a conversation (with adequate distance between them, of course). A sign on the door requested that only one customer enter at a time; no problem there. We paid up, signed the bill with a sanitized pen, and took our order home. | Cheese Omelet | MBB continues to create the best omelets I've ever had. It is interesting to see how the style changes a little bit depending on which Matt's you go to. Of course, I continue to deem Marina Heights the best, but Biltmore Plaza did an exceptional job. Home fries were abundant and ever fragrant with rosemary and sweet onions. The jam selection was blackberry today, an excellent accompaniment to our wheat toast. There is no doubt we would have loved it more with dine-in service, but the small table by our TV will do for now. As long as it's necessary, we will continue our Sundays like this. | Verdict | If Downtown doesn't pick up again next weekend, we'll be back here. Who knows, I might even lay claim to another Dukedom. Back-to-back-to-back Dukes of MBB... these are my life goals. There is no "zone" wait staff coverage rules (aka "not MY customer")....so every waiter or waitress that passes you checks in on you and keeps you happy. One complaint: The metal chairs and concrete floors. I took my brother in law this holiday season, and every time someone goes to sit or get up, the heavy metal chairs dragging on the concrete floor (amplified by the body of the chair) makes a sound as loud and obnoxious as a chainsaw being started up. The menus is limited, but what they do they do good. The breads are artisan no from a commercial bakery. The ham, bacon and sausage come from a local farm, the eggs are cage free. If you appreciate quality and are willing to wait for a good meal. This is your place. read more

I have eaten at MBB before (at the airport location). This one is a stand alone restaurant, I was looking forward to having a nice leisurely meal, stay for a bit and drink coffee and enjoy my morning. Not the case.. The server asked me when I sat down if I'd like some coffee which I did, she quickly brought the coffee and a menu then it was another 10 minutes before she came back to take my order. I ordered something off the menu, nothing special, it came out fairly fast and was delicious, no complaints. I did have to wave the server down (she was engrossed in her phone) to ask her to bring me some water, she gave me a snarl and then brought me back a luck warm glass of water. I then went about enjoying my breakfast. Along comes three of the wait staff to stand directly behind me and one of them (the male server on duty) proceeds to blow his nose, not a small dainty blow but a honking blow where you question if he has brought up part of his lung, I turned around to look at him in total disbelief, nothing the three of them go back to playing on their phones. They ignored each of us, I could over hear the ladies in front of me complaining to each other, all the while the servers behind me are complaining about how dead it was in there. I arrived at the restaurant at approximately 7:15-7:20 am, There was two other patrons in the restaurant, I counted 8 staff members. There was no excuse for the level of service that was received. This comment is for the Airport location since I can't find it. This was ridiculous and poorly managed. I ordered a breakfast burrito before my flight. I checked on it after 15 minutes, they said the manager was making it. Then 5 minutes later they said my burrito was given to the wrong customer and told me they would start a new one. I requested a refund as I had to catch my flight. Then they couldn't find the manager to approve the refund. Then they told me they can't refund the service charge they charged which I wasn't aware of in the first place. So I tipped, billed for a service charge for food I never received. Unbelievable.
