Best carnitas tacos I have ever had. Can't wait to go back. ----- We found the location on North Lamar on the way home from a day in San Antonio. Pretty beat and tired, we rolled in not sure what to expect. The environment was nice, service was decent. Our kids opted for the pancakes (hah!) because they love pancakes although one of them got a quesadilla and liked it. Again, I got the carnitas and they were unbelievably delicious. This is my favorite place to eat in Austin! You will never have Migas this good anywhere! You can't even make them as good as Maudie's at home. Their salsa is always just perfect, not too mild or too spicy and their chips are always hot and fresh. I am also always impressed with their service. Their Margaritas are great too, it's a real shame I developed an allergy to tequila. I used to have Migas and Margaritas for lunch at least once a week! This used to be my go to Tex Mex restaurant, but no more. The food is the same, but the service has hit rock bottom. For the 4TH TIME, they completely blew it. We got to the restaurant a little before 11:30 this morning. Waitress was eager and got our drinks and obligatory queso. We placed our order and kept waiting patiently with no visits from our waitress. 25 minutes in we noticed people who were seated 10-15 minutes after us getting their meals. We flagged down another waitress (not ours) and she found our waitress. That's when the fun started. Our waitress just matter of factly said she'd check on our food with no apology or anything. I said "don't we at least get a sorry for the wait?" Her response was that it wasn't her fault so she didn't need to apologize. At that point we walked out and will never be back. Stopped by for a quick lunch-ordered a small guacamole-very bland, tasted like mashed up guacamole, no cilantro, limes, onions, lime juice-very disappointing. Love Maudie's Austin, generally speaking, but experiences at this particular location have been disappointing: "extra cheese" nachos had so little cheese that I could not see it; add-on corn tortillas as stiff as cardboard. Went on the website to order a taco salad. It has an option for the shell to be gluten free (corn). Went to pick up the order and find out the taco shell is actually flour and not corn and the gluten free option was not available. So upset I spent my time and money at this place. I've never reviewed a restaurant before, I made a new account solely for the purpose of leaving this review, but the experience I had here was so unbelievable that I decided it needed to be shared so that I may prevent someone from making the same mistake as I did. This was hands down the worst meal I've ever had and I can't think of a close second. From the guacamole to the fajitas and enchiladas everything about this meal left me in disbelief. An unseasoned bite size serving of fajita beef, store bought corn and flour tortillas, guacamole that was spicy yet flavorless (How does one manage this), and everything slathered in American cheese. I've never walked out of a restaurant upset after eating comfort food but at least they gave me a new first. I've read a few reviews claiming this spot is a "Hole in the wall", for my own sanity I have to assume they don't understand what that means. This is my husband's go to place cause its on the way home from work and next to the Alamo. I like it, I don't love it. The service is always pretty decent, nothing to rave about it but never had a rude experience. I pretty much always get the same thing. Its one of those menus that nothing really sings to me. I get their avocado shrimp salad, its chopped avocado, shrimp, cheese and poblano cream sauce. Sometimes its spicy and sometimes its not. Guess it depends on whose making it. But its pretty much always tasty. And the price is pretty good too. So its one of those so-so places that doesn't blow my socks off, but I know I won't be mad we went and spent money on something gross. read more

So my family and I have been to many different locations of Maudie's .. and this is the one that disappoints the most! The food was so salty.. I swear I tasted salt first and then some food. The other locations aren't this way at all.. they do a perfect balance of salt, spices and just over all flavor. Now last night they were packed, BUT the waiter didn't do anything correct on my husband's plate. They forgot the beans and the chicken in his burrito and so it was veggies and sauce. I know the waiter felt horrible because my husband did deliver this screw up with a voice with plenty of base.. but at the same time, the waiter did ask twice if he wanted beans in the burrito. I will say the one thing that was funny about the whole experience was if your basket of chips was half empty.. it was like magical chip fairies showed up and put a new basket on your table lol ... I've been to Maudie's a billion times. It MAY be my favorite restaurant in Austin, for both foodly and sentimental reasons. That being said - have I had bad service? Sometimes. Have I had bad food? Rarely. The best parts: margaritas, friendly and attendant service, good chips, good queso, great salsa, GREAT breakfast anything (at any time of day), comfortable atmosphere, usually a few cute babies, Pete's Tantalizing Tacos, serranos, and delicious refried beans. I can't say enough good things about this location. I'm used to visiting the Lake Austin Blvd. location, but my gf and I recently moved up to the North side. This location is just as delicious, and not nearly as packed. It might have something to do with the Chuy's about two blocks away, but this place seems to always have a seat. I even had my birthday party here on a Saturday night and they didn't even flinch at the 20-person reservation. And sure enough, the place was busy that night, but there were still tables. Omg salsa. The red salsa is amazing, and you should definitely eat a lot of it, but the avocado-tomatilla salsa is ridiculous. If you like green stuff, eat it. Omg beef. I like Maudi's. The service and the food are reliable. I've been over a handful of times and their migas, breakfast tacos, pancakes, or margaritas never disappoint. This location isn't the best, definitely not at nice as the location on Slaughter, but it is still good. As an individual now living on the East coast, I can firmly say to all that since I've left Tejas, I dream about breakfast tacos on the regs. To the point that I wake up some mornings and I'm practically in tears that I have to make them for myself. The East coast needs to get with it, and rapido. But mas importante, is that Pete's Tantalizing Tacos or Tatiana's Tamale Tacos are the ones that come to my dreams before any other. The BEST BREAKFAST TACOS EVER! I'm not a big fan of going out for breakfast tacos since I can make the same at home. Whats so hard with eggs, bacon, and cheese right? I can't say I tried them all but... the pork tamale tacos are spot on. It's just eggs mashed with pork tamales and cheese on a flour tortilla. My new coworkers have been coming here for a couple of years now, every Wednesday is 'Taco Day' which is held at Maudie's. I have been trying to sample a new item every time as to be able to experience the whole menu and not just order the same thing over and over. So far, so good. This place really impressed me! Decided to give it a try last night for dinner with a few friends. We got there just in time for happy hour, $4 margaritas! I really like the atmosphere here, it's a really cute place. Plenty of seating, they also offer outside seating. I must admit, due to the location I was a little scared to try this place. Three beef enchiladas with two sunny-side up eggs resting on top. I knew I had to have it. C'mon, it has EGGS. How could I refuse? Anyway, I can't stop raving about it. It came out piping hot just like I like it (temperature, not spice). So wholesome. Almost life-changing. Beans were good! 2. Wait staff is nice and attentive! Sad points: 1. Music??? Why was there no music playing? 2. The food took a while to come out. I watched one of those shows on Food Network or something where they rescue a restaurant or bar and one thing the industry expert said was that the industry standard for food to come out is 12 minutes. I have been to the north Lamar location several times, I really have mixed feelings about this place the service is not really consistent. We have waited 10 minutes for our food and we have also waited 30 minutes for our food, we have had good service and also really bad service as well. You just really don't know what to expect. The food is mediocre tex mex however I really do love the queso and the salsa both seem to be on point. The staff has always been friendly and the happy hour is pretty reasonable. This is my family's go-to spot for when we've had a bad day and need to unwind and forget. It all starts with margaritas that make you sit up and take notice. There's nothing watered down here...youou get your liquor's worth. The Perfecto and Pura Vida are here to help whatever ails you. But they're not just strong, they're darn tasty drinks. I'm a tamales guy and love the Tamales el Jefe. My wife goes for the Rockin' Ruthann. My daughters dig their quesadillas. But here's what we love about Maudie's. We've never had a bad meal and we're practically regulars so that speaks to their consistency. And the service is always terrific. All in all, the value you get for your meal is spectacular. This review is for Maudie's on North Lamar. Since I moved to Brentwood, I've been frequenting the North Lamar Maudie's for my weekend migas fix. I've become fond of it, much like I was of the South Lamar location that I frequented for 6+ years. Food quality is the same deliciousness, staff is super friendly and attentive, and prices are good. They've also redecorated the interior of this location, looks pretty slick. I can't bring myself to give this location 5 stars because of the location. Once upon a time, Lamar north of Rundberg was probably a fine place to live. It's so bad now and doesn't seem to be turning around (except for Chinatown up the road a ways). The plaza that Maudie's is in is old and a little run down, even though the restaurant itself is pretty nice. Maybe Maudie's will consider opening a location in, say, the Triangle? Could be nice to have a central location!! read more

No wait for a Sunday brunch? Really?? We love Maudie's Bee Caves and on 360! Thus we tried this location to change up our Sunday routine. Unfortunately, this location is a weak link in the Maudie's chain. We were seated promptly, Oscar was bright eyed, courteous and eager to take our orders. The food, however, was not up to the standard we expect under the Maudie's name. French toast was burnt; eggs were cold. The sausage was mediocre. We suspect the orders were mixed up and thus cold. Poblano Crema Chicken Enchiladas, borracho beans, a bowl of queso and a mango margarita. That's my go-to order. I also enjoy every taco I've had, the beef and chicken fajitas, and the chicken relleno. Service here my most recent visit was just right. Had a party of 9, and this is a smaller location. They immediately went to pulling tables together and the hostess offered us a drink while we waited. Classic, solid, cheesy, simple and darn tasty tex-mex. The food is not very fancy, not very pricey, but Maudie's doesn't pretend to be anything else. If you've got a cheese craving that Josie's enchiladas can't satisfy then I think you may be beyond hope. My only suggestion is not to go when it is empty (mid-afternoon). Sat at the bar while waiting for our table, watched them pour margaritas that had been sent back to the bar into the pitchers again to serve. Then we were ignored for 25 minutes at the bar, after somebody had already asked if we need menus and we just wanted a drink while we waited. She turned around and never came back. Finally we sat and I guess they were short staffed. Our waitress took forever to greet us and would disappear often, we asked to order 3 times only to be literally waved off till she was ready. I always tip, I understand waiters live off tips and I would never want to take that out of somebodies pocket no matter how crappy the restaurant is or how busy.
