You just can't go wrong with those cheese loaf enchiladas. I have lived in Austin a long time. I know where to go to get my comfort food. It's good to know that i can be in any area of town and find a Maudie's to drown any emotion i might need to, with cheese. They have a decent sized menu, lots of things to choose from, i just don't. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't. Service is always pleasant and the salsa and chips are fresh. The drinks are never that watered down variety you dont want. Fact is, i can just never stop my mind from wandering to those perfect cheese enchiladas. Seemingly stuffed with roughly a quarter pound of Velveeta like cheese, per enchilada. Is it good for me? Hell no. Is it good for my heart, Gawd yes. (metaphorically, of course, i'm sure my Dr would tell me that i shouldn't eat a plate of melted Velveeta.) Some days you just need that meal that you used to have when: it was finals week and you needed to stuff your face, or where you would meet friends who had moved away from Austin and were Jonesing for their old fix of Maudie's or that meal that you would have with your best friend when you just needed to gossip. Tried Maudie's because our friend just LOVES this place. The food is awesome Tex-Mex. This is NOT a fancy restaurant. Don't expect culinary master pieces. But that's not why you are coming here. This is the type of restaurant you go to if you love your Tex-Mex covered in sauce and cheese, and then more cheese. My wife and I both ordered the Maggie, funny cuz we didn't discuss what we were getting. We both thoroughly enjoyed our taco, enchilada and chips with queso. The queso was just OK in my opinion, but I still devoured it. My removal of 1 star is because of: - the crummy atmosphere - the crummy location - un-attentive wait staff. My 8 month-old daughter threw-up like no bodies business (the kind worthy of high-fives from all your buddies) and we could NOT get napkins. We even got a waiter to come to our table and take our request for napkins. He said "OK" and then went about his business. I wasn't informing him we needed them, I was asking him to go get them. Maudie's is good at making margaritas and because of that I can have a good time going there. The food without alcohol is pretty generic Tex-Mex and while nothing really stands out it is perfectly acceptable if not maybe $1 more expensive than what fair value would really be. Their service has been fine the three times that I've been. I think this is a good place to go after work but there are better places for lunch and it's a dinner I'd get overly excited about. read more

As much as I appreciate the gluten free awareness, our waiter was barely aware of our existence. I had to stare him down to get drink refills or chips, he was much more concerned with a larger table, and with a girl at the back of the restaurant (appeared to be a customer, maybe his girlfriend or something) that was was putting his arm around repeatedly. What a hoot! This Maudie's has a real tongue in cheek attempt at "decor." The outside of the building didn't appeal to us at all as we drove past, but the parking lot was nearly packed on a Sunday morning, so we just HAD to give it a try. I had to chuckle as I entered the building, because it didn't appear the door would even close shut, let alone keep out a burglar, but I got distracted by the interior decor, which falls somewhere between "We don't have any money. What's the cheapest way to cover up the water damage in the ceiling?," and "Decor? We don't need no stinkin' decor! They come here for the FOOD! Besides, I have a sister who likes to finger paint. She can do it!" Needless to say, I was a little dubious when I had to get up and go get my own menu . . . there didn't appear to be any table service. But, when I took a look at the extensive menu, and the descriptions of the meals (with really modest prices), I began to feel much better. About the time Lea and I had decided on our choices, another two or three couples came in, and then another, and another, and before long, the place was really hopping, and there were four people tending tables. Not to say the place is pretentious, at all. Our waiter, in his 30s, wore a pair of faded jeans, a sweatshirt, and a ball cap down over his eyes. We had mistaken him for a customer earlier. Turns out he was just otherwise occupied. Soon there was salsa and chips on our table, delivered by a young lady who took our drink orders. The salsa at Maudie's is homemade, and delicious! It was spicy enough to clear up my morning sinus congestion, but still left enough taste buds to enjoy the entree when it arrived. Lea particularly enjoyed the very thin chips that are baked fresh daily. She had the Gringo, a platter of eggs, homestyle potato fries and bacon, while I had the Pancake Platter, with big, fat pancakes, eggs and bacon. I ordered "crispy" bacon, and when it arrived it was so crispy it had burned spots on it! That's hard to get in most restaurants, where they hesitate to get it to the point you can break it with a fork, because so many folks will send it back. All of our food was delicious, table service was pretty good, and there was a real mixture of (do I dare day "diners" in a place like this?) groups from couples to families enjoying generous portions of their favorite foods. It was definitely a good place to eat if you like good Tex-Mex offerings. And, it's kinda fun to speculate as you eat how long those big plywood stars on the ceiling are going to be able to hold on! read more

Best Migas in town!! Oh my gosh, they are unbeatable! "Pete's Tantalizing Tacos" are also spectacular. Fantastic salsa. Delicious margaritas. Great prices!! My first experience was on a double date with another couple who had seen the reviews here on Yelp and wanted to give it a try. Personally, I was a little doubtful when we arrived and realized the location, since the zip code is rather rough, but its actual location and parking lot are not intimidating. While you look over the menu, they bring out chips and salsa. The salsa is REALLY good. It's not a chunky vs smooth difference; there's just an extra flavor in there that makes it stand out. My friends grabbed the tacos el Pastor, and seemed pretty amazed by them. They are always on the hunt for acceptable el pastor, so this must hold some kind of value (haha). I ordered the Kimberly's Favorite (spinach & mushroom enchiladas) and was not disappointed either. We all ordered different styles of margaritas, and all were tasty and had a great balance - none overpowering. We were all rollin' on a budget and this ended up being the perfect place to go, it was SO cheap, even with the drinks. On my second trip, we ordered the chili con queso, which was alright - but I made the very distinct statement that it tasted like Velveeta and Rotel. The Carnitas Burrito was ordered and promptly devoured. The meat has a great season (dry rub??) that makes it taste very different and delish. Both times, the servings were perfect sized; not too small, but not obnoxiously large either. The waitstaff is nice and everyone that crosses your path acknowledges you, unlike some other places where the only one that cares about you is the waiter that's counting on your tips. read more

Let me start off by saying... I HATE when I have to leave a bad review. That being said...Tonight was a disaster!! My husband was in the fajita mood, so he ordered beef fajitas. With it being cold outside I ordered some chicken caldo. First off... The salsa was a little too spicy for me, so my husband asked the waiter to bring some creamy guacamole dip. When it was brought out, it was just plain ole guacamole. Secondly...when the food was brought out, one bite and my husband was done. The beef fajitas tasted more like PEPPER STEAK. You know, like from a chinese restaurant. He was so disappointed. My chicken CALDO, well it was more like chicken tortilla soup!! And trust me when I say...I KNOW what caldo is!! Chunks of potato and carrots. Big pieces of chicken. Yummy goodness. What got brought out to me was...shredded chicken, celery, onion, avocado, cheese, and tortilla strips. That is certainly not CALDO!! Thirdly, when asked for a manager to come talk to us, it literally took 5 minutes. I guess he wasn't in a hurry to see what was wrong. Up north, you will find that Maudie's, an Austin classic, has a longstanding location in the most obscure portion of town. Who, in their right mind--as a Tex-Mex mecca--would set up shop just due South of Chinatown? Asians don't like cheese, as indicative of their lactose intolerance. Queso is "no bueno" for the Eastern stomach. Being Asian and all, I can only assume that when I have some fatty grub adorned with much dairy product, but I certainly always make room for their rather "clumpy" cheese dishes. Their Hernandez enchiladas, with all of its beefy, carne-based chile, sits real greasy and heavy. Onions, queso, melted cheese, the aforementioned slop, and tortillas? Yes, please. Aside from giving me the worst "morning after" around, Maudie's certainly gives you a bang for your buck, if you are shooting for the cheesy, meaty, less-good-for-you grub. Along with this, there is no doubt that all will have no problem going to town, up until the point of losing your lunch, on their chips and salsa. As expected, you can assume that they are pouring an abundance of alcoholic beverages. To this effect, you will only consume more. Maudie's seems like the perfect fall-back for those going up north and thinking, "I don't think Vietnamese noodle soup or family-style Chinese food sounds good today." So, basically, MSG... or highly-processed cheese-based foodstuffs. read more

The service was honestly not the best and it was obvious they weren't very fond of us from the moment we walked in (we were an all black group). I had eaten breakfast at one down south and was told I had to try them for diner. Since we were up north, we stopped into this location. Overall, the food was great and the portions weren't too big. We ordered Josie's Enchiladas, which were by far the cheesiest cheese enchiladas I have ever had. If you like cheese and lots of cheese/chili sause, these are the enchiladas for you. The frozen margaritas were quite good, and they have happy hour specials until 7pm. We were disappointed that this location didn't have a mango mojito, but the mango 'rita made up for it. I swear that the second round was more 'leaded' than the previous! Decor was a bit dated, and the seating a bit close, but the service was excellent and we never went without chips and salsa -- which was fantastic. I hear they make their own, and it was some of the best I've had. Head on over to this location of Maudie's, and you'll be pleased with the generous menu and tasty selections. Maudie's has always been my go to spot for margaritas. Seriously, I go there at least once a week. This being an extra hectic week, after today I will have been there three times. I can't wait til 5:00. OK. These margaritas are the best in town. Hear me out. There are plenty of places to get an equally good margarita with fresh lime juice that isn't too sweet or too fake. Maudie's delicious, quality margaritas are $3.50 during happy hour, $3.75 the rest of the time. Sure, you can get a foo foo margarita downtown for $11 that probably tastes pretty good and gets you buzzed, but here, you can afford several. I don't live near this location, but it is my favorite. I love the staff. Don't get me wrong, all locations are good. Love the food. The fajitas were an old stand by for me forever--they are delicious. Lean meats (no fatty googlies), lots of different kinds of grilled peppers, a ton of fixings. Lately, however, I am addicted to the Kentchiladas. Enchiladas with their fab taco meat smothered in their amazing verde sauce, then their amazing queso. Damn! Yum! read more

I love Mexican food and Tex Mex, let me say that first. I love trying out new places, and I read good things about Maudie's so I figured I'd try it. I want to try every cheese enchilada dish in Austin (slowly, over time). First off, chips and salsa. Good. Cheap happy hour margaritas. Awesome. When the waiter came over to get our orders, I first asked what cheese was used in the enchiladas and I asked if they were recommended. He gave me a look like I was crazy and said, "Uh, yeah they're good. I dunno... Velveeta cheese?" Ok, that's a bit of a red flag. Velveeta? Seriously? But, but, I read on Yelp and on Urbanspoon that people love the cheese enchiladas, so I figure I'm missing something. I order one of the highly recommended cheese enchilada dishes while my brother orders chicken enchiladas. Our meals come. They look like plates of cheese slop with some tortillas buried beneath, still, I am hopeful. Slop can taste so awesome sometimes. I start eating mine. I like the rice and beans. The enchiladas, though, are a bit difficult to eat. The cheese, it doesn't really stay in the tortilla, it has no firmness. It just squirts out to join the rest of the cheese slop. The flavoring is good, the sauce decent. But man, this cheese is fake cheese! Meanwhile, my brother has discovered that there is no chicken in his cheese slop. He tells the waiter and asks if he can just pay for the rice and beans and not the enchiladas. We had a movie to catch at the Drafthouse next door so we didn't have time to wait. The waiter offers to "bring [him] some chicken" to "fix the problem". But the deal is, we wanted baked chicken enchiladas. You know, with chicken included in the deal from the beginning. Nicely, to his credit, the waiter accepts our request and removes the chicken-less enchiladas from the final total. (P.S. The cheese slop tastes good with the chips...like queso) As we leave I think..."Damn, another Tex Mex place to mark off my list." I wanted to love it. Ah well. If you like cheese enchiladas made with sloppy fake cheese (and many people do) you'll like it. If you're looking for real cheese, head to Habanero on Oltorf or even Magnolia Cafe (The Magnolia Enchiladas are too die for). read more

These peeps got some kind of swank set up. You walk in and someone is already waiting to seat you in the dining area or the bar. Either way is good. Queso is good, salsa is soupy but eventually if you eat enough of it there's a kick. The bartenders were pretty cool (we sat at the bar) and they made sure I was happy with my strawberry "swirl" margarita but I failed to mention that the strawberry goup they put in my glass froze to the side of the cup and when it was scratched up by my straw it looked like chunks of period blood. It tasted good, but appearances suggest otherwise. The bathrooms have high quality two-ply paper, not quite charmin quality, but better than the standard sand paper most places give you. There is a lovely paint on each bathroom door and BLACK TOILETS. A visit to this place is warranted just because of that alone. read more

Like Emily, I am a multi-Maudie's reviewer, I can't get enough of this place. I woke up on Memorial Day with a huge appetite, craving French toast. I didn't want sub par Enny's-Day type toast, so had to think fast what would a) satisfy my craving and b) be open -most five star French toast is served on the weekends during brunch. I can't get over how cheap Maudie's breakfast is. Once again I got worked up about the pricing and over-ordered. The tamale breakfast taco is only the best idea ever so I tacked that on top of my FT order, and even added a side of bacon. Bring it! As typical with the other Maudie's location, our food was served promptly and with a smile. I don't particularly have a preference between locations, but I thought the inside of this Maudie's was the coolest of all (while simultaneously being the lamest of all on the outside): they what looks like old skool mexican pin up posters everywhere and other unique decorations. Third time is indeed the charm - I am officially awarding Maudie's the Best Mexican Chain award. read more

Yes, I realize this is my third Maudie's review. That's because I'm pretty much in love with the place. I believe this is the original Maudie's - and personally I like this one or the one on 360 best. Being from Dallas, I don't get to eat here often - but when I do, it's pure heaven. If I could arrange this to be my last meal, I would. There's just nothing like this place in Dallas, and I try to make it my first stop when I come into Austin, which isn't as often as I'd like, unfortunately. This a smaller location, so there usually is a waiting time Friday and Saturday evenings. Has a good ambiance though, the light fixtures are made of old soda bottles. I have good news and I have bad news, which do you want to hear first? Bad? OK. I decided to have Maudie's cater my wedding, because they were by far the cheapest option I had considered. I had never been there, so before signing the contract, my fiancee and I went to try it out. The location is SCARY. We waited for like 20 minutes after being seated to ever be approached again. After we got our food, he came back like 5 minutes later to drop off the ticket, and that was the last we saw of him. We had to get another waiter to run our credit card. The food however was DELICIOUS. I got chicken fajitas and my fiancee got the cheese chile relleno. The fajitas were so amazing. I got SO MUCH food, and so many extras. It came with a big plate of chicken, tomatoes, onion, and peppers, and sour cream, guacamole, cheese, lettuce, rice, and beans on the side. Oh and hot sauce and chips were great. Good news. Since we were so impressed with the food, we decided to have them cater the wedding. I worked with the catering lady (Laila I think was her name) and she was so fantastically helpful! She was just great!! The day of the wedding, everything went really smoothly. All of my out of town guests were saying "Oh man, where did you get this food?! We have to go there next time we're in Austin!" The catering helper was so extremely nice and she did a wonderful wonderful job of keeping the food replenished, and she cleaned up quickly and didn't leave any messes for my family to deal with. She even brought containers and packed up the leftovers for us, which I thought was such a considerate and great idea! So, in conclusion, Maudie's has delicious fajitas. The North Lamar location is a bit dodgey, but luckily the restaurant has several different locations that may be less scary. read more

This is one of the best known texmex joints in Austin. In not sure why other than they have been here for long time. Food is decent but truly nothing special. Chips are the run-of-the-mill restaurant supply variety. My favorite is the Skinny Cheryl. The cheese quesadillas are pathetic - soggy and void of more than a tablespoon of cheese. I like their spinach and mushroom enchilada, however, I was not a fan of their queso, which is a make or break with me and also their service was HORRIBLE. There was a large party there, so I understand it must have been hard, but they sat us right next to the party when there were many more seats. The day we were there it was raining. Sure, get inside and out of the rain - you think - only to go into the restroom and have it leaking water from the ceiling around the FREAKIN' LIGHT FIXTURE! Scary! The floor was also flooded...guess they didn't get the memo and try to throw down a pan or two to catch the water... oh well. Maudie's had great food. They really did. The guac was fresh as hell, queso was delicious. I had 2 enchiladas, taco and chile con carne. It was all piping hot and delicious. Everyone at the table commented on how great their meal was. So clearly food isn't the issue. Let's start from the beginning. We had 6 plus 1 in our party and arrived at about 530 on a Sunday. We were sat immediately and greeted promptly. Our server took our drink order and took off. It was at this point that he couldn't be found with a search warrant. The waters arrived in good time, as did the guac and queso we ordered with our drinks. Still no waiter, still no drinks. It seemed as though our server had a really spread out multi table section while others on the floor had a single or two table section. Not sure what the hell was going on. Eventually, and by that I mean 15 minutes plus, our drinks arrived and he took our dinner order. I immediately ordered another margarita just to be safe. The food took FOREVER. Almost 30 minutes. My single taco came out all by itself 10 minutes before any other food hit the table. When the food did arrive, we were missing fajitas for 2. Our food sat on the table as we waited for the fajitas that came 10 minutes after. I spoke to the manager and asked him to make it right, leaving the Interpretation up to him. Our waiter profusely apologized as did the manager. He comped the fajitas and felt so bad he gave me a hug. That's a first. I will go back to Maudie's because the food was so good and the manager seemed to be sincere. read more

Perhaps our opinion was helped by visiting the Texas Wine and Music fest (and therefore having a good amount of drinks), but Maudie's was a welcome cool respite in the Texas heat. The food was very good. Nice and spicy. My girlfriend had the quesadilla, while I had the vegan tacos. Tasted fresh and authentic, nothing "canned" about the food. But do to wanting to try a food delivery service (DoorDash) that company ruined there food by taking 30 minutes to deliver it when I live 8 minutes away. I love this restaurant! The first meal I was turned onto here were the breakfast tacos. They are AMAZING! And, for the price, you get a huge amount of food! The Mara's Bean Dip rocks, and the Nachos Compuesto hits the spot! Their Mexican Martini is the best in town. The staff is top notch! Rene and Adrian lead the crew in making everyone feel at home. I went here for lunch on 12/2/13 with a large group of 16 from the office. I had only been here once before and honestly didn't remember the experience. Once I got my food I realized why I didn't remember it....it is not that great. In my opinion, there are much better Mexican/Tex-Mex places in the city of Austin. I ended up ordering a beef taco salad which I'd think you couldn't mess up. Well for some reason my taco salad runneth over with juice...no dramatics. I'm not sure what was up with that but it made for a mushy taco shell which is no bueno. The salad didn't have much flavor. I have had better. The chips and salsa also did not stand out to me either. I can't give them much credit for the food but the service was good especially considering it was a large group. This will not be on my list of places to suggest and/or frequent. read more

I hate to give a bad review because our waiter was the most kind and attentive I've had in Austin.......but the food here sucks. I've heard about maudies on and off for years so my husband and I decided to finally try it. The location is not the best, but as far as Mexican places in Austin, it's par for the course. We started out with some margaritas, which were good but could stand to be a bit stronger. The chips and salsa were pretty good too and our waiter was always nearby for a refill. Now on to the main course, we got a chicken taco plate and beef taco plate. The chicken was the driest chicken taco I've ever had eating out. The beef was slightly better, but dripping with grease....some people like that, me not so much. The rice and beans were not the best I've had in austin and the the taco toppings consisted of iceberg lettuce and not much else. I really wanted to like this place, but it feel far short of what Austin has to offer for Tex-Mex. read more

I haven't been to Maudie's in ages...probably close to ten years I would say. The truth is that it has been so long that I didn't remember much about the dining experience itself. Now remembering the company I was with...that's another story. Back to my current experience... first off, the service was excellent. Our waitstaff was attentive and friendly. I had the light plate which ended up being only one taco and a small guacamole salad for me since the queso covered chips went to my 7-year-old queso fanatic. Since that was my sole purpose in ordering that particular plate it was all good. I have to say that taco was one of the best I have had. The meat was perfectly seasoned, saucy and filled more than 2/3 of the shell. The salad was just right. I usually prefer more meat than salad and that's what I got. The rest of my party had a variety of dishes but everyone was happy with what they had and we had a really excellent dining experience. I had not visited this particular location previously but I certainly plan on returning. read more

My boyfriend and I just moved to Austin and on one of our first nights in town, we stopped in to see what Maudie's had going on. And I'm so happy we did. The staff was friendly and attentive, but not overly so. Maura's Bean Dip is ADDICTING. Even though we were gut-bustingly full after our main courses, we couldn't help continuing to dip the crisp tortilla chips in the bean dip. So good. We went back for breakfast a couple days later (we were having our cars worked on! No judgements please! :P) and it was equally as delicious as our first visit. I got the Migas plate with flour tortillas and my boyfriend got the Huevos Rancheros with corn tortillas. Both were excellent and...cheap! They also brought out fresh chips and salsa. Man! My husband and I ate breakfast in here this morning, and it was won-DER-ful! The coffee was hot and delicious, and the service was on-the-spot. The chips are hot and thin and perfect, as is their salsa. Perfectly hot and fresh. I'm going to search out the recipe online, when I finish this post. We both ordered the migas (I know, but we're jealous types!). They were so spicy and tasty, with fresh serrano peppers sliced up in the eggs. (I wouldn't recommend eating one of those, until you've tried a PIECE of one, first, but maybe that's just me. I'm a green-eyed gringo.)
