Sometimes I can't get their attention, so they miss a follow-up sale for a second drink, which would mean a larger tip. Was looking for a place to get tamales for takeout, and went with this one based on the various food recommendation articles out there. Absolutely loved this place! We tried the Tamales El Jefe, one with tomatillo and one with con carne - both were super delicious but I had a slight preference for the con carne for flavor. Surprised that it came with 2 tortillas per dish too! On top of that, it also came with free chips and salsa both of which were also delicious and was a nice surprise. The biggest bang for your buck that I've seen in a long time. We came here super hungry in the morning after a late night and had a great experience! The service isn't 5 stars but to be honest it would feel weird if it was. I was happy to see all the staff buzzing about doing their best even if it meant I had to wait for water. Everyone we interacted with was kind and helpful. But the food is where it's at. I got the Marfa stack and my husband got the migas. After a long time being gone from Texas the Marfa stack was exactly what I needed. Cheesy and saucy and oooooey gooooooey!! It was delicious and I want another one right now. The migas were delicious according to my husband (I was too distracted by my food to even think to try his. Oops!) but personally I think I "won". The ambiance is classic Tex mex with salsa in pitchers and big ol water cups. Exactly what the doctor ordered. I used to order carry-out from this location often when I lived closer. In fact, I ordered so often, that when I showed up and hadn't called beforehand because I was going to eat in, the servers panicked because my order wasn't ready (gotta love that). The food is excellent (especially the guacamole) - Cheap, yummy, Mexican food. The service is superb. They always knew what I wanted (yes I'm boring - I find one incredibly yummy meal and I stick to it). My only negative is that they have raised prices substantially (on what I used to order), so it is no longer a super cheap yummy meal...it's a moderately cheap yummy meal. Bluntly, Austin is full of great Mexican food options from upscale interior cuisine to classic old school Tex-Mex to trailers with every taco option known to man. So, in all honesty, a three star review for Mexican food in Austin is probably a sign that you can do better. BUT having said that, this Maudie's does a couple of things well. First, the salsa is good and has a nice kick. Second, the orders came out correctly. And most importantly for Tex-Mex, the tea and chip refills were readily available. That's about where the good ends, though. My dining companion got a combination with a taco and guacamole salad and added a cheese enchilada. I'm not a guac fan, but the tiny dollop of green on top of a huge pile of lettuce looked like someone was trying to stretch it out. The taco looked good. My dining companion wasn't a huge fan of her enchiladas. When I tried them, I was overcome by the large amount of chili powder. It's not bad -- just a bit overwhelming. My fajitas for one were slightly underwhelming, especially being served on a plate instead of a sizzling platter. And like the others have mentioned, the service definitely appears to be MIA at times. While the chips and tea were on point, getting an order taken, food delivered, or a check delivered was certainly an opportunity to work on your patience. Loving Maudie's is a no brainer in Austin and the North Lamar location is the best one. The people that work there have been there forever and they treat you like family when you walk in. Now I'm gonna admit, I go here mainly for the Tio Chon enchiladas which are their famous cheese and Chile con carne enchiladas, but on these they ALSO put ranchero sauce, queso and lettuce and tomato. They are so frigging good!! Get 'em some time or you're really missing out on some deliciousness! They also have the BEST tortilla soup in the planet. You get all the rice, cilantro and minced onions on the side to add as much as you please. Another thing I LOVE is the Power Bowl Salad especially vegetarian with fajita veggies instead of meat. The steak is also incredible on it! And the spicy pineapple jalapeño margarita with Tajin on the rim... Lord! So good. I wish I had more pictures to share of my food from there. I know I've taken plenty but for some reason I just felt like doing a review for them... Guess I miss eating there.... Sadly there's no outside seating right now and Covid's bad right now. So as I ride down North Lamar, I figured I'd stop and try this place. I went to the one closer to south and I wasn't too impressed...needless to say it's the same experience here sadly. When I walked in, it was a awkward vibe with the "hellos, how many today?" ....almost walked out then..but I dismissed it and followed through. Seated a waiter came over took my drink order (got the mojito) and the lady dropped off some delicious salsa and crispy chips (the best thing) so I ended up ordering a cheese enchilada plate with a crispy pulled chicken taco. That taco cake out First...talk about flavor-LESS!..was like boiled unseasoned chicken...pushed through and ate it.. We have been coming to this location for over 20 years weekly. Several of the staff have seen our children grow over the years and welcome us like family. Tonight was a first as we actually walked out after never receiving our food. I don't know what in the world was going on as two tables that came 20 minutes after us had theirs and were in fact finishing up while we still waited. Rating out of 10: 7 Maudie's is an Austin institution. It is synonymous with Tex Mex and is authentic. If you are looking for fancy, then go elsewhere, but if you want no frills Tex Mex served well, you should definitely check it out. There are a number of locations, but the N Lamar location is very consistent. Start with the chile con queso, as it is not only a great way to start your meal, but it is also fabulous. It has a bit of kick and is super creamy in all its queso-ness. I love chili rellenos, and Maudie's does them well. I prefer the beef chile relleno, but the chicken one is also quite tasty. They come with rice and beans that are fairly average on their own but work well overall. The food is quite filling and the portions large. If you leave hungry you have done something seriously wrong. I don't make it to Austin much these days, but when I do, I try to make it to Maudie's. read more

The Josie's Enchiladas and the homestyle chicken tortilla soup (Caldo) (among others) have been my family's fav's for 3 generations. Born and raised in San Antonio and dined at the best of the best, we agree Maudie's is the no. 1 restaurant in the State for great, most delicious Tex-Mex. So much so that we have traveled from DFW to this location in north Austin to enjoy the consistent flavors and service only Maudie's provides. We have tried well over 50 Tex-Mex restaurants and food trucks in the DFW area , searching for something tolerable - but have not found anything close. The chips and salsa are a great indicator of the quality and flavor of the food to be served at many restaurants and Maudi's excels there as well. Pretty good Tex mex that hits the right cheapness:goodness ratio. Wait staff is super friendly and they're fast and helpful. You can basically customize anything in the menu however you want it. I usually go for enchiladas and they're pretty good here, but it really depends on the sauce! But, if you want something on the menu but don't like the sauce, you can always ask to get it swapped. Overall, I think it's pretty much on par with a chuy's or el Mercado. I think they recently renovated the dining room too, so it does seem a lot cleaner and more updated, which is a bonus. read more

UPDATE: About the service... the struggle is real. Server disappears for long periods, makes an appearance and walks right by without making eye contact. It's not rude service, it's just not good. There are two or three folks that are really good. I've had a long run of not good servers. I come here every week anyway because it's my neighborhood texmex place. ---- I like the food well enough. To be frank, the service isn't terribly good. Even with the place half full, there's lots of staff running around doing ... stuff ... and we're waiting quite a while to get waters and cokes going. The place has its charms and the ungreat service is tolerable when the enchiladas are so good. I'm currently liking the beef enchiladas, and the texmex enchiladas are great when cheese is all I need, and we've all been there, right?. The carne guisada is great. The chili rilleno is good. Their queso compuesto (I forget what they name it) is a favorite. Rice and beans are serviceable. Tortillas are average. So, I go and chow down on good texmex, and sometiwait a while for staff attention. No big deal. Avoid the booth way back in the corner. It's a blind spot for everyone who works there. Be young. The sauce was spicy. The chicken was fine. The chips and salsa were pretty good. I can make very similar beans and rice (props to Felix from Albuquerque for the recipe and guidance) at home and look at me, I'm not even slightly Mexican. Service was average, but it was 5PM on a Tuesday, nobody there really. It was inexpensive. Total with tip was $13 for dinner and a beer. On our last visit to Maudie's North Lamar, we were greeted by a joyful man who, in spite of the already crowded dining room, seemed unbelievably happy to see two more patrons. Well, alright. Not a bad start. The rest of the evening pretty much played to a similar tune. This Maudie's locale is tough to find, but also tough to beat. It's huddled in a run-down strip mall in the 10,000th block of North Lamar. For newbies or visitors, that's wayyy up there. Aside from the location, there's really nothing not to like about this charming little restaurant. The crowd is steady, but there's not usually a wait (at least on weeknights). There's no ridiculously loud music. The booths are cozy. The wait staff is efficient and friendly. And the prices don't take away from your appetite. We had two entrees and sodas for $15. Their menu is standard Tex-Mex with a better than average taste. The enchiladas are delicious, the rice is flavorful, and the veggie nachos are piled high with crisp, sauted peppers and onions. They practically throw food at you here. (I'm not complaining.) A basket of warm chips is paired with a mild, sweet salsa and flour tortillas are served with nearly every meal. We have eaten at this location A. LOT. I have tried most of the fare. And every time, the food does not disappoint. This place is great because not only is the food really comforting, but the Mexican martini is ridiculously stout and the waitstaff beyond accommodating. Only four stars because when Maudie's is in the weeds, which is every time we visit, the chip basket doesn't get refilled quickly, if at all, and beverages are slow to the table. That being said, call on any server, expediter or the ever-present manager, Pete, and the problem is remedied. Sadly, the little things matter most. But, this ain't corporate Tex-Mex cuisine. The food is usually fine. The Pete's tacos are good, and I like the fish tacos too. Their sodas are large and refillable, which is a plus. However, we are considering not returning because of the loud, terrible music always blasting from the kitchen. I fully support people being able to listen to music while they work, but the kitchen is essentially open to the dining room from 2 different openings, and it's loud, and the choice of music is not great.
