I love how Maudie's has so many gluten free options and takes food allergies and gluten sensitivities seriously. My son has celiac disease and can only eat at places that are extra careful about gluten cross contamination. We feel comfortable eating here and love all the enchilada choices. They also have gluten free chips which is often hard to find in lots of places due to using shared fryers. read more

This is a great place for standard fares, but like most TexMex joints don't venture too far off the beatened path of fajitas and enchiladas. Janis and I decided to go for the mixed fajitas, but also felt a bit adventurous... so we started with the Chipotle Shrimp Stuffed Avocado salad, which could have been good if it weren't drenched in this drab and untasty orange-colored cream sauce. The chicken tortila soup left a lot to be desired, but after doing a little on-the-fly cullinary 911 by adding salsa, pepper and cilantro, it turned out pretty good. The fajitas are solid, the flour tortila is not like it's fresh outta mamacita's tortila pan, but it'll do. I might go again when I'm back in Austin, but I would probably be more inclined to try out a few other places along the way before returning. (Perhaps Pappasitos... although I've never been to the one in Austin, just ones in Houston). read more

Gee whiz, I've sure been wanting to play the half star card a lot here lately. I'd give this a solid 3 1/2 but it's good enough to be represented by a 4 star rather than just a 3. The atmosphere is standard Tex-Mex-joint so there's nothing particularly special about that. The service is rather pleasant and quick. I never had to worry about a refill of my drink or chips and salsa because they were on top of it (which was relatively impressive, considering the restaurant was rather busy and there were 11 people at our table). As far as the food goes, I've had pretty good experiences. It saddens me to say that the queso isn't worth mentioning. At all. It's really not very good. The salsa, however, is pretty solid. You really can't go wrong with their shrimp stuffed avocado. I kind of want to order that every time, but I decided to venture out of ye olde comfort zone. Today I tried "Kimberly's Favorite" which is one of their named enchilada dishes. It was two spinach, onion, tomato and garlic mushroom enchiladas covered with a poblano cream sauce. I personally wish that the cream sauce had a spicy kick to it. It really would have elevated the dish to a much more delicious level, but all in all it was a really satisfying meal. My partner and I are regulars here. We have been for 15+ yrs. Sat. night I had The Gringo Breakfast by myself. The scrambled eggs were in crumbs. Not fluffy. There was zero flavor to them. Sausage patties were a bit thin but tasty. Potatoes were good but too few. The flour tortilla made elsewhere tasted so. The plate had no garnishes. It just wasn't good enough to ever order breakfast there again. They don't get scrambled eggs or enough quantity to quench a man's appetite. My waiter was awful. He had larger tables which usually provide larger tips. I had to ask for everything. He never brought my requests. So the young woman who brings chips and salsa made sure I got what I needed. Bad food. Really bad service. And their prices have become outrageou. Ill come back to accompany my spouse but I am looking for a new Tex-Mex home. read more

This is one of my favorite Austin restaurants. I always order the Tio Chon enchilada plate. The plate has a spicy bite to it. I like to add some of the rice and beans to the plate to get different flavors and textures. Service is always great, refills are plentiful, and food is delivered promptly and piping hot. No margarita today because of work but I recommend the house margaritas. Ask for a a splash of orange juice to be added. This review is from the N. Lamar location which is closer to home while the S. Hands down, always our first stop when landing in Austin. Absolutely delicious tamales. Perfectly thin cooked homemade tortilla chips and their salsa as out of this world delicious. For $9.99 I had three tamales, rice, beans, and my fill of chips. Grandma got their chicken tacos and had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. She said the tortilla held up better than expected and couldn't believe how well the food heated up. It was still just as good the next day. My mom and uncle both had the combination plates for $12.99 and had options of enchiladas, tacos, tamales, and more that I can't remember. Their plates also came with a guacamole salad. Service here is excellent and the manager is always on the floor greeting customers and making sure everything is just to the diner's liking. I definitely recommend this place and we'll be going back before heading home to New England. read more

We used Maudie's to cater my wife's 40th birthday party and couldn't be more pleased with how everything turned out. We ordered the beef, chicken and veggie fajitas and they turned out great. I picked up the large order and everything was ready to go and piping hot. I'm not normally a fan of fajitas but the beef and chicken were cooked to perfection. Did not try the veggie but our vegetarian friends said they were really good. We ordered enough for 65 people and still came home with plenty of leftover food. Definitely worth the price. Last night I forgot to write this because of Maudie's. I have been going to Maudie's with my partner for 8 years and have NEVER had a bad experience there! The food is always *looks you square in the eyes* ALWAYS fresh and delicious. Pretty sure their carne guisada is made by god. The grandpas special is way better than the name might suggest (do not judge the dish by its name) The margaritas they have are delicious and will never leave you wanting. The staff is always fantastic and the service is impeccable! Lastly, I just finished eating leftovers from last night and at 400 degrees in the oven for 10-15 minutes I couldn't tell the difference between leftover and fresh cooked! I really wanted to give a 4.5 stars, but here goes: I've been wanting to try Maudie's for years now. I'm more of an "Authentic' Mexican person as opposed to the Americanized "Tex-Mex" version. Side Note: Chuy's is my king of Tex Mex, so all other Tex Mex establishments gets measured against Chuy's. I must say that after my first visit to Maudie's, they are right up there with the Kings! The restaurant is in a very unassuming location (strip mall), in a very unassuming location (North Lamar), and the outside looks extremely unassuming (and thats being generous). Your first thought upon pulling up to the spot might be "Is it even open!?" Once you get past all the unassuming-ness (did I just created a new word?!), Maudie's is very welcoming. We were greeted by both the manager and a waiter as soon as we walked through the door . Within a minute, our waiter came over and offered us drinks and appetizers. By the time he came back we were ready to order and the process was smooth. I ordered the taco salad with pulled chicken (For some reason, I've had a craving for this for week!). The little one ordered a hamburger and fries (I know, I know! SMH). Oh and a small Guacamole (appetizer) was necessary because I always rate Mexican Restaurants according to their guacamole. So how was everything, you ask?? Let's find out... The guacamole tasted good, I enjoyed it. It was blended thoroughly so I was missing those small chucks of quacamole that I equate with freshly-made guac and when they say "small" they really mean it...it's a tiny portion. My Taco Salad was good. The shreded chicken was very soft and seasoned well. The salad and tomatoes were fresh. I really couldnt complain about my meal. The burger and fries were devoured, so no complaints there! The service was impecable and when the bill came it was very low. So for serivce, quality, and price...it's going to be hard to beat this awesome little Tex-Mex Spot. Not bad for a retaurant chain! Wow! This place is packed at lunchtime. Great menu. Good selection of breakfast tacos. Food was ok, typical. Maybe 'good' even. Surprisingly (and disappointingly), the don't have any decent hot sauce. I was expecting a side of habanero sauce or something to cleanse the colon, but no. Their 'hot' (?) sauces are Tabasco and Cholula. Doesn't get more boring than that. read more

I used to love this place until today. We stopped by here around lunch time and were seated . We were pretty much ignored for about 15 minutes. The waiter finally came over and took our orders. The drinks came out and my Girlfriend's bloody mary tasted horrible. The food came a bit later brought by 2 clueless waitresses,They did not know who was getting what and one of them burned my arm with the hot plate. I took a bite of my enchiladas and realized they gave me the wrong order. I sent the food back and told him to take it of my bill. My girlfriend kept her food but towards the end she was regretting it since I took a bite of the guacamole and pulled a long hair out of my mouth. I will never eat here again. read more

He always get something different, while I go for chilaquiles with added chicken fajita, and a couple of sunny-side up eggs on top. Tried to give this place a second chance and unfortunately they failed again. I called in a to go order, simple regular dinner, which is supposed to be two cheese enchiladas, a taco, rice and beans, i requested no onions, when picked it up, asked again and was there told were no onions, only to get home and find there is no taco and of course there are onions. Called again and was told, sorry, if you come back we will be waiting for you. Yea not at all what happened. Just ended up getting a refund. Terrific job to my server Juan! First time dining with my family in this restaurant and of course I looked on yelp for some Tex-Mex food and I made my selection according with the review. We walk in to the restaurant some of the people who worked there were sitting in a table they stood up and gave us warm welcome. Then the server Juan comes to our table. A very polite gentlemen and very professional offering drinks and appetizer . I told him that this was our first time with them so. He suggest one of the appetizers. Of course my kids they loved queso :). We ordered some ships and queso that was really good and then salsa is not too hot and not too spicy so you can enjoy without it being too hot. I order the fajitas . And they were delicious . Let me tell you this .the menu has a really good selection we find some fish for my wife The food looks really healthy you have a choices for you in case you want to have something more Homestyle. My older daughter order the chipotle chicken enchiladas. Great flavor after our meal my kids asked JUAN for Desert. he offer us the item on the list but my daughter ask for something different root beer float . So he very profesional told my daughter that he was able to do that for her . And them my little daughter ask for cheesecake that was funny because even the people next to us laugh because she was asking for cheesecake in a Mexican restaurant so Juan suggest to my daughter to try their tres leches cake . Then that was the decision for my daughter she was really happy with the tres leches cake. :) I really recommend this place to anyone looking for Tex-Mex food and course I hope all the server were profesional and nice like Juan not only with adults but with kids also . YA'LL. I have been craving EXACTLY this kind of hole-in-the-wall Mexican since I moved here. You know what I mean. Where every dish is covered in a giant mass of melted cheese. Where the sauce made of meat drippings and spices or something. Where the portions are so big that you and a date can stuff your faces and still manage to get out of there for under $25. I don't get it. Really. I've been to Maudie's in a couple of locations and vowed never to return, but then friends always say, "Oh come on! I'll show you the good things to order!" and I go back. Only to be disappointed again. This is what happened yet again when some friends of mine finally figured out they live like 2 minutes away from this location. The ritas are pretty tasty and quite powerful. Maybe that's what keeps people coming back? The place is crowded and has no space to wait for a table, as the bar is also crowded and extends all the way to the front door. The salsa is pedestrian and not terrible, but certainly not impressive. This time I was told the Kimberly's Favorite Enchiladas ($8.95) were the way to go. Two steamed tortillas with spinach and mushrooms in a poblano cream sauce and queso blanco. Ok. Enchiladas. *cracks knuckles* {somewhat informative rant} Now, I've eaten my fair share, and made my fair share of these. I've catered with them. I've made them for parties. I've climbed the peaks of stacked enchiladas and I swam in the seas of sauces from chile con carne to molé to suiza. These are in the suiza style, which means a cream-based sauce like a béchamel that originated from Swiss immigrants who came over and decided to make things a little differently. Suiza=Swiss. Now, a good suiza sauce needs a few things to make it good. A roux is helpful to make it nice and thick and to get it to stick to the food. A decent amount of salt and pepper balances out the sweetness of the cream. Finally, the majority of the sauce is traditionally made with (now stay with me here) things that have flavor other than cream. Like chiles, onions, garlic, tomatillos, cilantro and the like. In other words, you make a sauce (typically verde) and then add a bit of cream or sour cream to it. Maudie's decided to go another route and start with just cream and then add a few little chunks of poblano. I wouldn't have believed there was anything other than cream in the sauce if I hadn't spied a tiny piece of poblano in there. Then there's the tortillas. They're not supposed to be steamed before rolling. They're supposed to be dipped in the sauce and then rolled. OR you can dip them briefly in a little hot oil. This allows them to absorb the flavors of the sauce better and makes them more pliable. Maudie's may steam theirs to make them healthier, but if you're covering them in cream sauce and cheese...you've already lost your healthy meal. Finally, when they say "topped with queso blanco" they do not mean actual white cheese. They mean "queso". This means there's not much distinction between the sauce and the "cheese" You'd think that maybe the two sauces would mix together and help each other out, but you'd be wrong. Please, people, put some freaking cheese on my enchiladas! {/somewhat informative rant} Despite our excellent service, I doubt I'll be back. Maybe I'll go for some ritas and apps. Maybe their apps are good? I don't know, but my distaste for their food seems to continue. I just don't get why people like it. read more

This is actually closer to a 3.5* (P says 3*) but the manager pushed it to a 4* for me. He was delightful. Charming, big smile, checked in on us twice AND bussed tables! Haven't been to Maudie's in forever but we were down that way and thought why not. I forget all of their stuff is "chili con carne" when I prefer a less meaty/chili powder sauce but that's certainly not their fault. Quesadilla was good - pico not chopped as finely as Rio Grande (so meh) but the tortillas were crispier which was nice. Water pitcher was lightly iced so the water was cold but a refill did not jam your cup full of ice. Big glasses for water - must. P has this thing about servers taking his last 1/4 of diet coke away to refill instead of bringing a new glass and our server here left him his drink to drink while getting him a refill. He really enjoyed that. So, I got my usual: 2 cheese enchiladas, rice, taco. Ground beef is stewed with tomatoes/peppers and kind of watery - not my favorite but was good. American cheese enchiladas are hard to mess up and these certainly weren't ... again, would just prefer a red enchilada sauce instead of their famous chili con carne. One issue -- the tortillas ??!! Store bought?!??? P dined on carne guisada burritos and liked them. Said the chunks of meat were bigger than expected. Of course it was slathered in CCC. Last note - I wound up ordering a "grande" margarita and was somewhat disappointed to not see a giant goblet placed in front of me but once I tasted Maudie's I was MUCH happier that it's a 16oz (??) cup that tasted quite strong to me -- more tequila, less sugar water. I don't get it. I just don't get it. Maudie's is always packed! But every time I have tried to give it another chance I think the same thing: Eh. It isn't that the food is bad, but it isn't what I would call good either. Way too loud and crowded, I can only assume it is so popular because you can bring your wild children here and get some mediocre Tex-Mex. But other than that, I see no reason to dine here. Especially in a town that has so many fantastic Mexican food places...so why settle? The service was fine, but nothing special. Honestly it felt more like a formulaic chain without that special something. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong thing (I've had tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas: all basic Tex-Mex staples), maybe I have just been unlucky enough to hit them on a bad day (several times), but either way I don't recommend it if you want something truly outstanding. I'm really stuck on the fence about this one. My entree stunk, but my app, and the chips and salsa, were good. What's a girl to do? I already knew I liked Maudie's chips and salsa; they're a sinus patient's dream. I'd eaten them with a Corona or two at the Lake Austin location a couple of months ago. I finally decided to try Maudie's for lunch. Well, hmmm... I'll start with the entree. I got cheese enchiladas, which I think most of you know tends to be my go-to Messycan dish. I like to draw comparisons among Messycan restaurants based on that dish, so there you go. The enchiladas were average at the absolute best. I can't completely put my finger on what I didn't like about them. I think it was mainly the sauce. It tasted like it flunked out of Chef Boyardee Culinary Academy. The rice and beans were quite good, though, but I was pretty full by the time I got around to them. Okay, the app... I got the Diablo Sol Food ("A savory blend of melted cheese seasoned with the tasty flavors of fresh garlic, onions and peppers, combined with our tender taco beef and pico de gallo."). It was a flavor explosion in my mouth! Just enough cilantro without being too much, which is hard to do. There was a huge smack of flavor in every single bite, and the garlic gave it just the right kick. I walked out of Maudie's black and blue from all that flavor excitement. I don't normally like tomatoes or peppers, but I found myself eating them happily in this case. The flavors created a medley better put together than anything Lennon and McCartney ever did in the music world, and that's really saying something because I'm the world's biggest Beatles fan. I desperately wanted to stand up and scream, "I am the walrus!" But I didn't. Service was fantastic. I got everything I wanted and needed at the drop of a hat, and this is one of the few restaurants where I got the check in due time. I'll definitely go back for more Devil's food. read more

I'm totally biased when it comes to Tex Mex these days. All I'm looking for is a place that has other options than cheese enchiladas. And Maudie's does it well, very well. Options: Lots of them. For crying out loud, they even have a separate GF menu which I think is totally rad. Not to mention, an entire "no meat section." They even have a lighter portion section claiming some plates can be made to be under 500 calories. Health conscious options, extremely accommodating and a long time local favorite? I'm so in. Food: I have tried the potato rajas taco plate at another location prior to this one. At this location I recently tried the spinach tomatado enchiladas. Never have I ever had a Tex Mex plate that was served with grilled zucchini as a side. WOW. I mean, how can you not love this? And I approve of their flour tortillas. Their breakfast menu also looks very good and again, with an entire vegetarian taco section. I'm sold. Location: So I moved back to my old hood recently that I lived in when I was a youngin'. This location is now conveniently maybe 5 minutes from the house. There are a ton of locations, and this one is easy to miss in an uninviting shopping center between Braker and Rundberg (yes, really). The waiting area inside it very small and cramped. Outside is awkward too, if you're waiting. Specials: Happy hour is Monday 3pm-close, Tues-Fri 3pm-6:30pm, Sat-Sun 10am-2pm. I'm not a margarita slut but they appear to be quite popular here so I may have to cave and get one (on the rocks) next time. Regular house margs are only $3.50 during HH. Prices are not outrageous, as Tex Mex should never be. I for one, am happy to have this location nearby. read more

I did not like this place. I was excited to eat here because they use organic, hormone and antibiotic free meats and eggs - just my type of place, or so I thought. I'm hoping it has a 4 star reviews because i came on a bad day? We walked in and it was kinda dull feeling. Service wasn't bad, exactly, but it certainly wasn't memorable. The food was just boring and not well executed. The eggs were chopped up, overcooked and tasteless. The ranchero sauce was too spicy for my kid, the only spice that was probably on the plate and very watery. The potatoes were flavorless. The portions were small and I can make better food at home. My dad said his taco was okay, the waitress said the tortillas were not home made. That's a damn shame in Texas. read more

This Maudie's wins "Most adorable manager." His smile, accompanied with a raspy yet squeaky voice, makes me feel right at home every time. This guy really really seems to love his job and the people that walk in to his restaurant. The frozen margaritas here are just plain awesome. I won't go as far as saying it is the best frozen drink I've had, but it is up there. The fajita quesadilla and fajita tacos are flat out mouth watering. I always get the fajita tacos (steak) because they have never disappointed and they have always satisfied. My wife always gets the fajita quesadilla, which I have no problem nibbling on. This food was awful. The service was mediocre and the food was worse. I ordered the gulf shrimp fajitas. Very small portions that it fit all one plate. I got 5 shrimp rice and beans all on one plate. The only thing I ended up eating was the rice and beans. The shrimp were hard and over cooked. I told the manager and the amount of time they took to correct my order was ridiculous. I visited this restaurant for the first time on 11/16/19. The food was okay. I had gotten the beef enchiladas. The enchiladas were okay, they don't put much cheese on them. I also got the question with beef in it and even that was okay. I will not be returning to this place again. The server was cool, he could've been a little more enthusiastic. 5+ stars and super shout out to the management at Maudie's North Lamar. I am on a strict elimination diet and called ahead to see my options. The manager went through options over the phone, and when I arrived, visited my table, confirmed she saved me a piece of meat that didn't have seasoning on it, gave me veggies I was able to eat, confirmed which things were allergen free, and even passed off a personal bag of tortilla chips. Really- I couldn't have asked for better service. The food, (chicken fajitas) were totally delicious, and even better, no reactions to the food. read more
