Very good food! This place is my husband's all time favorite place in the UNIVERSE. I eat here with him about once a week. I love the wings, omg are they good! They've won some awards I'm told. Well it took me a while to finally get to this place and I must say I feel really stupid for not trying it earlier. Oh boy where do I begin. #1 This place is quite possibly the best place to eat in Champlin maybe even all of Minneapolis. #2 The place is quite possibly the coolest place to hang out in Champlin maybe even all of Minneapolis (sorry for the double up but it's true) #3 The people here are AWESOME. From the staff and the patrons who frequent this place they all make you want to stay longer. It's like the "Cheers of Champlin" someone told me. #4 Food- All of the food is very good. I highly recommend the Double Cheese Burger with cheddar cheese and the chipotle ole sauce ( must add this sauce). The wood fire grill really brings out the flavor in it. Pair with the fries which are phenomenal. Also my favorite was the whiskey glazed wings. #5 Décor- was very New York Retro which a great bar in the center of the room with maybe some of the best music playing in the background. Think "Corey Heart, REO, Foreigner, Depeche Mode. Please note that they have two rooms. One is the main bar room while the other is a dining room. I preferred the atmosphere in the bar but I did eat again in the dining room with some friends and did enjoy it. One other thing. This place is packed on the weekends and finding a seat at the main bar can take some time if you don't get there early enough. There are other seating areas at the bar that are not attached to the main bar BUT still in the "bar room" that are easier to get. Funny story: I initially went here to kill an 2 hours before my movie started down the street. I came in with the intention to only staying an hour and a half. Well you get to talking with the people there and one hour turned into two hours. Two hours then turned into four. Six hours latter I basically closed down the place at 2am. We tried this place for first time on St Patrick's Day. Showed up just after 6, without a reservation or call ahead seating. We were seated relatively quickly, the staff was super nice and the food was good. We sat in the dining room area which was nice but I didnt like that we felt crammed in. The tables were really close together and we could barely have a conversation because we so close to the tavle next to us we were basically in the conversation too. Arrived before Happy hour really hungry and unable to wait. I explained that I had not been here for a very long time and needed to have something undeniably wonderful. I requested that Zack the bartender come up with something I would exquisitely happy with and that is exactly what resulted. They have a huge offering of beers on tap and I ordered the Surly Furious while waiting for my surprise. I received a beautiful piece of medium rare steak with chimichurri sauce, roasted asparagus and skin on mashed potatoes. I have not had tender and flavorful beef for a very long time and this absolutely hit the spot. Service behind the bar is excellent, while on the floor spotty and a little slow in the bar area. I love this old Cabin atmosphere and patio outdoor space. I do not love the music they play and the television is always on sports, but that is a personal aside. The happy hours are great and I truly enjoy the wings. Turkey burger is off the charts and takes a long time but well worth it. Meatloaf is a great to go and is a huge portion as is pork chops. Plenty of parking and smoking is available right out the front door if you must. read more

Mavericks looks like a biker bar from the front, so we never stopped in. Some of our friends said they go there often and thought it was really good, so we decided to give it a try on a recent Friday night. We went early, so it was Happy Hour and they were running specials on drinks and appetizers. The drinks came quickly, but the food was extremely slow. It took about 45 minutes to get our meals, and there were only about 3 other tables full when we ordered. Food quality was pretty good, but not great. Looks like they're renovating the dining room, and it has a fresh feel to it. There's a gas fireplace that's open to the outside patio. It was too cool outside to spend much time there, but looks like it would be nice if it was a bit warmer. The bar area is about twice the size of the dining room, so the initial biker bar impression may not be too far off from Maverick's roots. read more

This used to be our favorite neighborhood spot - great food and specials, but also wonderful friendly service. We were there today. Total change in atmosphere as far as the "friendly" part goes. We were not allowed on the patio until 1 pm, tried to move a table so our party of 5 could sit in the shade (hot and sunny day, no umbrellas) but were told most definitely no, and were snapped at when we asked very nicely to have the music turned down a bit so we could visit. This is truly a one-of-a-kind place! Great people, great food, great prices. The blueberry pancakes are the best I have ever had. They are made from scratch and could be your Grandmother's recipe. This place is amazing, foods great and their service was outstanding. My girlfriend and I stumbled on this place one night after work. We walked in and the atmosphere was awesome I like how the place was laid out. It was very clean which always makes me happy. Our servers name was Barb, she has been there a long time and you could tell. Her knowledge of the menu was great. I asked her what her favorite thing on the menu was and right away she gave me exactly what I was looking for, her favorite things. Most times when I ask this question I get a server that just reads me the house specials or meals that are word for word right off of the menu, but she did not. I end up choosing The Chefs Revenge along with my favorite beer, Surly Darkness. I was presented with an huge burger that was packed with all the hot ingredients in the kitchen!!! :) That burger was made perfect for me by one of the chefs that is only part time but boy does that guy know his shit. The fries were okay but i am not as fry guy at all so ill let it slide. Point is, if you're looking for good food this is your place! They do deals like 1\2 off for people who work in the food industry on Mondays and $10 burger and a beer on Thursday. Good job guys keep it up!!!! :) read more

They love their regulars, and will pay attention to their tables all day long, but if you're not in that clique....better send smoke signals to get a server to come to your table. We literally watched our server go AROUND our table with empty glasses to wait on tables next to us. Then she hangs at those tables and schmoozes with them. It was like we didn't even matter. My wife had to go to the bar for drinks. After all the dinners we had there, we're done with them. "Chef's Revenge." Was once a fun menu item, but the last few times I ordered it was as if they threw a few meh scrap items from the kitchen and attempted to church it up as it it was something special. Fishy smelling rice with tortilla chips as an entree? Ummm NO. Lesson learned. Go there for drinks....I guess you're good to go. Go there for food....good luck! read more

My friend and I went for breakfast on a Sunday and it wasn't packed to the point of annoyance,we were waited on right away and checked on frequently. Very friendly staff! Awesome food, great service, and cool atmosphere. My wife and I decided to have a late night dinner and at the last minute decided on Mavericks. We go there quite often for lunch but always forget about it for dinner. Well they didn't disappoint. I had the house made meatloaf dinner with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus while my wife had the Coq Au Vin. Both were very good and obviously prepared from scratch with care. Drinks were good as was our dessert. Service was attentive but not overly so and quick. Value was also good as I thought the prices were very reasonable for good food (if the food was less than good I wouldn't say this). The Champlin and Brooklyn Park area needs more places like this. We will definitely be back and will bring our foodie friends next time. read more

Usually better everything but..... I was bellied up to the bar, so about 10 ft from the kitchen, and there was a hair on my pork chop...wth? Took over 10 min to get my second beer as SHREK the bartender was too busy flipping glasses, sneezing on ice and flirting with his girlfriend, totally gross n was sweating over drinks while working, hence why I ordered beer. This place seems to be hit or miss, i've had good food, i've had bad food but this weeks adventure was the worst. A great place like this should focus on getting top notch workers since it's so intimate but Shrek the bartender was more interested in his girlfriend and her friends then most of the peopl at the bar, saw alot of eye rolling and mad looks on how long it was taking him to pour. I love the quiet little neighborhood bar vibe of this place! They have a cozy dining room with a fireplace and a quaint bar with a lightly fun retro vibe. Last time we went, my boyfriend and I both got the chef's revenge. It's a surprise meal - menu says no questions asked, no requests made. It did not disappoint either of us! Fantastic! I had 2 small chicken breasts with mashed potatoes and a delicious cream sauce. I'm lactose intollerant...but it was so worth it! He had a steak with shrimp and some kind of specially prepared cauliflower. And the drinks are amazing. I seriously love this place. read more

It is unfortunate that I have to write this review because before this, the few times I have been to Mavericks the food and service were great. After my experience on Sunday I will not be returning. My boyfriend and I arrived around 10:45 am for some brunch. First, we were not greeted by anyone for close to 10 minutes, the staff kept walking around and ignoring us and the other guests waiting. Finally we sit down, and a nice host brings us some water. I asked her if we could order some coffee and she said she wasn't able to place that order for us but someone would be over soon. 20 minutes later a man comes over and gets our coffee. The coffee was served in the smallest glass you have ever seen. I asked if we could get more coffee, and he said that because everyone keeps order it they can't keep up and this is the most I could get. I said fine, and told him we were ready to order. He said he was sorry but he couldn't take our order and we would have to wait. This made no sense to my boyfriend and I, since he was the server that go us our drinks. The host came around 10 minutes later and said we were behind two others that needed to order before us. During this whole experience the man who got us drinks did nothing but stand around at the bar. The lady behind the bar seemed to be keeping up with about 15 peoples orders and drinks. Finally the "right" server comes over to us and takes our order. We got our food around 1:00 pm. By that time we were starving and finished eating in about 5 minutes. My boyfriend at this point was done and went to wait in the car. I then had to wait for 20 more minutes for us to get our bill back. The server brought the bill right away and I gave him my card. He then proceeded to take 3 tables orders, enter them all in, get drinks, and do a few other tasks before running my card. He never asked the other man working to run my bill over to me, or the host. He finally brought it over, and offered no apology for our services. I have never not left a tip before in my life until Sunday morning. By the time it was all said and done we were there for 3 hours. I would suggest hiring more staff, or not letting the ones you have working stand around for their entire shift. We loved everything about this place. We are here a few years ago and can't figure out why we haven't been back! Food seems to all be made in house from the salsa to the barbecue sauce. I had the fajitas, the wood smoke flavor complimented the fresh flavors of the peppers and black bean salsa. My husband had the ribeye with the blue cheese crumbles....Yum! We ordered the hummus as an appetizer and it was a family favorite, even our 2 and 4 year olds enjoyed it. The atmosphere was also enjoyable we sat in the bar area. It reminded us of all the restaurants we loved in our old hometown of Madison, Wi. We will definitely be back. The service was great too!!! read more

We live close to Mavericks and have been going there since it opened. Mostly as it's close and we're lazy. The food is 50/50, sometimes great, sometimes "what were you thinking?" We went last night with neighbors. They sat us at a table in the dining room, we asked for a booth. Instead of moving the place settings 2 feet to the booth, they made us wait in the hall until the booth was set up. Weird. Our friend asked to taste a porter. He had 2 different glasses of it, neither was a porter. Then our friend decided to order the chicken nachos special, but go light on the cheese. The server said on nightly specials, no modifications. Must have said it 5 times. The modification would have been, use less cheese than you planned....Would have saved expenses right there. So he ordered something else. Cheese is a dietary issue for him. The female friend and I ordered the chicken stir fry special. Very dry and on fire. Stir fry is not supposed to be a spicy dish but gingery, garlicky, soy-y. Not good. My husband ordered-as always a burger. It was excellent. The woodfire grill makes burgers amazing here. I think they should expand their burger menu and knock of the nightly specials and for sure, when there are 2 tables filled in the dining room, don't make your guests stand in the hall while you move their napkins and forks.. read more

We live just up the highway in Anoka and go to Mavericks on a regular basis. I have been to Mavericks so many times, it's odd to read that some customers have had a poor experience. Last Saturday we stopped in for dinner and were seated at a table in the bar. Drinks came right away. Two for one mixed drinks during happy hour. Wonderful chicken wings and crunchy onion rings. I ordered the ribeye steak that came with asparagus and horseradish flavored mashed potatoes. Big chunks of blue cheese on top of the steak. This is not bar food. Just plain wonderful flavors. Our waitress was friendly and we had a great time. It's like that every time we go to Mavericks. Breakfast is good too with really strong coffee. The only problem is that on occasion the place is so busy we can't find a spot in the lot and end up going elsewhere. read more

I lived in the Andover area for a year, and Mavericks was a go to place when I needed some serious comfort food. I live in SLP now, but still try to get up there once in a while because it's so good! I've been here for breakfast, dinner, and weekend daytime beers, and I've never been disappointed. If you've never been there before, look alert as you're getting close or you might miss it -- Mavericks kind of sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Inside it feels to me a lot like a spot you'd find up north, and there are always several regulars hanging out. I personally like that -- it feels like a neighborhood hang in a city that doesn't really have those. All of the food I've had here is good, but the meatloaf you can get for dinner is fantastic. My parents go here all the time, I haven't been in a few years but we went for Sunday brunch (10 people ranging from mid 20's to 92!) and was not impressed. First of all, the waitress/manager/owner had forgotten about our reservation so we had to walk around to the other side of the restaurant (wouldn't be a big deal except we have 3 elderly people in our group with walkers.) It was Sunday and the guys wanted the game on (it was on in the bar area but not in the dining room where we had been relocated.) She said she would put it on after she got our menus, but forgot... finally did about 10 minutes and 1 touchdown later! We had 3 different people waiting on us--which is fine/understandable, but not exactly ideal. The youngest of the servers lacked a little service tact (asking "Does anyone need more water?" multiple times, taking away plates before majority of the table was done) I'm going to assume he's new, probably hasn't served much. My dad ordered an iced tea and said it made him feel sick (due to the high amount of powdered tea mix--?? just say you don't have it then!) Food came out at 3 different times... awkward service to say the least. Food was good, not wonderful, but good. Overall I guess it's what you would expect for what it is/where it is, not probably the best choice for brunch with older people. read more

My husband and I like the food at Mavericks and like others have said think this is a hidden gem. HOWEVER, service is not good. Twice I have called and made a reservation for the dining room for a special occasion only to be called back the day of the reservation and told that there is a private party in the dining room and we will have to sit in the lounge. The lounge is a dive bar. I love dive bars but not for a special occasion. Since they have waited until the day of the reservation to call me I have been left high and dry without a reservation for my special occasion. If you do get in the service is very slow but they have said it will be because the food takes longer. The service is not only slow but also very inattentive. Bummer. I love a hidden gem but will have to find a different one. I have been burned twice now so won't try again. read more
