I have not been in Max & Lucy's but I hear many people raving about this place so when a coworker told me he was going, I asked him if he could buy me something from there. I wanted to eat something on the healthier side so I told him to get the salmon. On their menu (from what I saw on their Yelp pictures), there was three different ways to get the salmon. The guy buying my food, got it with pesto. The salmon was a decent size with pesto and cheese on top of it. It came with two scoops of rice and toss salad with 1000 island dressing. When I took that first bite of the salmon, all I could think of how delicious and soft the salmon was. It was not dry at all like most places cook their fish, and surprisingly, the fish was not fishy tasting, and not salty at all. The salmon was very fresh tasting. I wish I had had more! I would definitely go back and try the other items on the menu... the meatloaf with mushroom gravy looked good... too bad they never had on the day we got food. Bummers. read more

This is my go to place for takeout breakfast and lunch. Everything I've tried here has been fresh, tasty, and filling. The pricing is average for plate lunches in town but that doesn't reflect in the quality. The quality of the food is fan-tastic! For breakfast, get the bento...egg done the way you want it...fried rice...and for me...bacon. The combination is perfect and it'll put you on the right foot with just enough carbs and protein to get your day started right. I'm a bacon lover (aren't we all?) and the bacon here gets a triple gold star. It's crispy, salty (but not too salty), fat that melts in your mouth before you chew...goodness. For lunch, my favorite, by far, is the roast pork. Yes...there's a theme here...I like eating pork...please don't judge me. Given my review of their bacon, it's pretty clear these guys take their pork seriously because, like how they've perfected their bacon, the roast pork is perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, perfectly tender, and perfectly delicious! Found this place on Yelp, because I was waiting for my vehicle to get serviced at Toyota. My other half and I went here and noticed the ambience was a home kind of feeling. It's like walking into grandmas home with pictures hanging of the kids and their artwork. Customer service: Mike was welcoming from the time we walked in to the time we walked out. He was patient with us because we informed him it's our first time and we don't know what we wanted yet. The cashier was a beautiful nice lady! She was very kind and pleasant and requested, we should have dessert. Food: There were many choices to choose from, as everything looked delicious in the pans as you look over the glass. I got myself the salmon Katsu with tartar sauce!!!! This was cooked to perfection! The crust was perfect and it is obvious they clean their oil out frequently because the crust was golden brown and no sign of black charred pieces from left over fried pieces. The salmon melted in my mouth, and to be honest the sauce is not required, it's just if you want extra flavoring in your mouth. I also got a side order baked chicken! That too was amazing! The meat fell off the bone and the chicken skin was perfect, slightly crispy yet soft. This reminded me of school lunches I ate in elementary, they made the best baked chicken! Thanks for bringing back the memories of the taste of a great baked chicken! My other half got the steak plate. He said it was okay and it was tender! When I had a piece it was good, the seasoning was right on the spot and there was a good proportion of fat and meat. Seating/ Restaurant: There are seating inside and outside of the restaurant. The inside can be tight if it becomes busy. It was only us dining in until everyone started coming in then did it feel tight and small in there. They also have seating outside their restaurant. They have been at the place for 9 years according to the cashier lady. The decor is family oriented. They have pictures of two kids which I presume are max and Lucy (name of restaurant). There are artworks created by the kids. They will close if they run out of food, but normally close 2 or 3. They have daily specials, so menu changes. What can I say, I love these little hole in the wall gems. Max and Lucy's shine bright! My first visit here I arrived after the lunch crowd. That wasn't a good idea. A lot of the food choices where gone. Yep, it's so good that they tend to run out. I'm not a big fish eater unless it's a poke bowl (sigh, bad Filipino). Much to my surprise I ordered the teri salmon and it was SUPERB! I knew I had to pay this place another visit, just to ensure I wasn't just hungry where anything is good. I've since tried their taco salad, yum. I've also had another fish dish, yep, FISH! I ordered the opakapaka and was I happy that I did. You're able to taste that buttery, lemon flavor in the fish. The breading is light, perfectly golden and simply amazing. I've also had their desserts and oh my, those are good too! The staff is amazingly friendly. I haven't been there and it not be busy, the staff (two people) are quick, efficient and provide perfect customer service. I will definitely be back again. Max & Lucy's surely is nostalgic in every sense of the word, whether it be the bright colors of the establishment, the wholesome comfort food items on the menu, or the family-oriented customer service you receive upon every visit. Very rarely, if at all, do you ever leave without a full stomach and a general feeling of contentment. I accidentally stumbled upon Max & Lucy's when out on lunch one day and attempting to find sustenance. I must've visited close to closing, which is why there weren't that many options upon my first visit, but the lasagna that I was given was as close to perfection as can be with large chunks of mushrooms, spinach, meat, etc. overflowing under the pasta sheets and smothered in a hearty marinara sauce. The salad accompanying the lasagna also didn't disappoint with its freshness and a complimentary balsamic vinaigrette. Overall, I would highly recommend Max & Lucy's for a bite to eat if you're in the area because it's truly a staple of an eatery. Don't believe me? Located - On Halekauwila street next to HSFCU. Food Local favorites is what's offered here. Foods like: roast pork, meatloaf, ahi katsu, teri chicken and so forth. I come here for two particular dishes; the Roast Pork, which is very tender and savory. Then there is the gravy. It's very rich from all that meat fat. They give you the option of brown or white rice and mac or toss salad. The second dish I get here is the Meatloaf - This is the dish that gives me the kanak attack. They are very generous on the slices and this dish also has that awesome gravy I was just talkin about. I can tell they use lots of seasoning. The only con to the food here is that the food can sit out for a while if I get there after 12:00 making temperature warm but the taste is still good. Price for the food is definitely a plus. The average full size plate will run you between 6 and 7 dollars on average. Service They can get busy during the lunch rush so don't expect them to treat you like royalty. The main thing is that the line moves quickly and they're friendly. Environment They have a decent amount of tables and even a TV which is always on ESPN. I wish yelp was able to offer half stars. Because I would give this place a four and a half out of five. I love homemade comfort food done right. When it comes to fried chicken the ratio of the meat and batter needs to be balanced. I'm talking about chicken being rolled and drowned in flour then deep fried making it look like its on steroids. Everyone's had one of those;). It's where you bite into 4 inches of breaded skin only to find an itty bitty piece all the way at the bottom. Well that was not the case at this joint. I sprinkled some Tabasco on top and continued eating. The Mac and cheese was interesting. I tasted the cheddar, but the cheese was clumped together in parts of the macaroni while some had none. It wasn't evenly spread through. Although, it was a bit salty the topping of the breadcrumbs was a great touch. I did order one roasted which was good. There was great seasoning on the skin. Ran into this place by accident. Local style home cooking. I got a combo with teri salmon and 2 pieces fried chicken. The salmon was tasty but I did not try the chicken. THe plates look like they run from $10 - 15. I would hope for the price that my 2 scoops of rice would be a little fuller and round considering the amount of protein I think I would need a little bit more rice. They should also be a little bit more friendly or inviting as I am a person who believes that customer service plays an important role when reviewing a new place or any place for that matter. 3 stars for the salmon. That's it. After trying the chicken and it suits my taste I may edit the review. But, for now, 3 stars it is. Parking is difficult in the area as well. read more

Well I got my plate and was quite pleased with the baked Chicken which was quite plump and moist, the Roast Pork was pretty good although like most places a bit salty but not as bad as others. It was quite a decent size lunch and I was looking at my neighbors plate and getting lunch envy as his Panko Crusted Opakapaka looked good. Very good stop for lunch if you're near the court area. I had the roast pork plate ($6.75), which I always get, and it's flavorful and moist. They also pour a generous serving of gravy over everything. The mac salad that comes with the roast pork plate is surprisingly flavorful, more than just an afterthought side dish. Delicious, casual healthy-ish plate lunch food at a reasonable price -- and great service, to boot! Max & Lucy's is definitely a new (to me) go-to place in the courthouse area! I had heard through the grapevine about a lunch spot that had the owner's kids' artwork up on the walls, and I thought, "Well, at least it'll be cute." And it really is! The menu board artwork, like the children's artwork, is colorful and whimsical without being ridiculous, and the menu is varied without being overwhelming. The lunch specials vary by day, so now my friends and I know we'll have to go back on a Monday . . . and a Thursday . . . at the very least! Two of us today had the eggplant lasagna. Now, between the two of us, I'd say that one person is definitely more of a healthy eater than the other, but we both loved our food! The lasagna is really more like stacks of eggplant parmesan, with cheese and spinach between the layers (I had to remove the spinach because I have an allergy, but it was easy enough to take out without disrupting the rest of the dish), and the marinara sauce was tasty without being overpowering. And then, as if we didn't have enough already, the owner came out from behind the counter and gave us a container that contained a fresh-out-of-the-fryer fried chicken for each of us! He insisted that since it was our first time, we had to try a variety of items. So nice! In addition to the selection of entrees and drinks (bottled AND canned), Max & Lucy's offers a variety of homemade desserts in really reasonable-sized portions -- so they're somehow even more tempting . . . because you know you can finish one off quiet easily. First and (possibly) last visit to Max & Lucy's. After rave reviews from my coworkers, 4 of us ordered the steak plate ($9.25) for pick up around 11:30AM. Portions inconsistent. My plate had 3 pieces of steak and the whole thing was covered in half rotten mixed greens and brown iceberg lettuce. We had to reportion all the plates back at the office to be fair to all of us. Steak - unseasoned, full of gristle and cut crooked (some pieces were 3/4" thick, some were little ends about 1/4" thick) Salad - half rotten, see picture. Dressing, mini sized and out of the bottle. White rice - hard, dry and burnt, tasted like yesterday's rice from the bottom of the pot. Very disappointing when my coworkers were so excited to go back here and the Yelp reviews were so positive. Another place off the list of joints around the office. So this place is a hole in the wall, but I have to say they do some pretty decent food. I got the steak with rice and "potato mac" (potato salad with pasta). I liked that the steak I got was served pretty medium - almost medium rare by default. I wasn't expecting that. Short order and takeout places usually cook well done to avoid complaints and just have one uniform standard. The steak however was way too seasoned. The salt and pepper dominated and it kind of took away from the steak a bit. Also, it's not super high quality steak; there was a pretty decent amount of fat on it. But don't get me wrong, the steak was still good. The rice was good too; it was white rice but they put butter in it so it wasn't just like eating plain white rice. I've never had potato mac before and that was alright, although I thought it was over seasoned as well. I might like it if I tried it from a few different places to get more of an idea. So I think over seasoning is kind of a theme at this place. It's better than under seasoning, but it can still throw off a meal. Another good thing however is the price. For a little bit over 10 bucks, I got a TON of food. So even with a couple kinks at least you're getting bang for your buck. I think if they could work on that a bit more I'd bump the rating. read more

Must be an off day for their roast pork; it was overwhelmingly salty... I took one bite and had to spit it out to avoid a stroke...and I like salt/shoyu but this was way too much. Flavor is everything; no one likes bland food, but at least it gives customers the option to adjust it with salt or shoyu, but there's no going back once it's gone over board. However, they have the most friendly service that I gave them 3 stars instead of 1. With that said, it's their friendly service that made me decide to give it another try next time. read more

I've been living in Kakaako for couple months, and I just found out about this place! I've simply been missing out. Even though I've stared at the menu on Yelp for a while, I still had a hard time deciding when I got to the place. Following the recommendation of the fellow Yelpers, I decided to come around 11am. This worked out wonderfully because the crowd started lining up about 30 mins after. I went with Teri salmon, and, boy, I was not disappointed! It was super moist and full of flavor. The owner (I think) poured extra Teri sauce on the brown rice for me, and I was drooling at that point. The only thing I had to watch out for were bones, but they're pretty big so it shouldn't be too big of a problem. I also got the tossed salad, which was full of greens, instead of your typical iceberg lettuce. I got the lilikoi dressing, and it was perfect for a semi-healthy lunch. I also checked in for a free drink! For the desserts, I was sad to find that they were already sold out of lemon bars so I got the butter less chocolate cake topped with various nuts. We came in moments before they were closing and a man and woman gladly welcomed us and he offered us the rest of the ribs and anything else we would like. We ordered ribs, chili and chicken. They have a reputation for having better fried chicken than Zippy's and for my first time here and a Zippy's-lover, I put it to the taste-test and although the fried chicken is flavorful and crunchy, in my opinion, it still doesn't surpass Zippy's. There is an option for brown or white rice and the rice isn't dry like other places as the day progresses. There is canned drinks or fountain drinks, but not that many options.
