What I Booked: I'm new to Chicago and found Gold Coast Salon through Google, where they're listed as a "relaxed salon" with quality work. Their website clearly advertised full babylights starting at $190+. I booked an appointment with Ashlee on 5/15 and paid a $95 deposit. She immediately requested photos of my current hair and my desired results, which I provided (see attached photos). What Happened: I arrived early to my appointment on 5/29. After examining my hair, Ashlee quoted me $680-$700 for the service without blow dry or cut. This was over 3.5 times the advertised price. I understood the "$190+" meant the price could vary, but in what world does a jump to $700 make sense? That's not a reasonable variation, it's egregious and deceptive. I came prepared for the price to be higher than the base rate, but this kind of markup is completely unreasonable for babylights on already blonde, shoulder-length fine hair. When I expressed that my budget was $300-$400, she offered to "see what she could make work." She returned with a scaled-down option: face-framing highlights and a few babylights for around $390. During this back-and-forth, she claimed the high price was due to this being a "full color correction." Look at my photos. I'm already blonde. This is clearly not a color correction situation. When I pushed back on the pricing, Ashlee condescendingly told me that this cost might not be in my "beauty budget" but it is in a lot of her other clients' budgets. This comment was not only rude and dismissive, but completely missed the point: this isn't about affordability, it's about being misled by advertised pricing. The Unacceptable Resolution: Realizing I couldn't trust her judgment or spend hours in this uncomfortable situation, I requested to simply use my $95 deposit toward a trim and leave. She refused, insisting I could only receive the service I originally booked or be charged the full amount. I left without services and with my deposit held hostage. The Issue: This is textbook bait-and-switch advertising. Advertising services at $190+ and then quoting nearly $700 in person with no transparency about pricing factors beforehand is deceptive and potentially illegal. Their own booking policy states deposits "will be applied towards your services," yet they refused to honor this for an alternative service despite their egregious pricing discrepancy. I am pursuing this matter through my credit card company and appropriate consumer protection channels. Do not book here if you value transparent pricing and honest business practices.

And more importantly, they helped connect me with Maude for color and Dae for cuts. That changed everything. It's honestly mind-blowing how much finding the right people has transformed my relationship with my hair. I used to cut it once every 8-9 months, assuming it didn't make much difference for my straight, "boring" hair. Now, I actually look forward to my appointments every six weeks. What used to feel just "fine" now regularly earns compliments on both the color and the cut. And honestly I didn't think anything of it because they're the experts but as I was walking back to my hotel after the appointment and glanced at my reflection in the mirror, I was shocked to see the curls had almost completely fallen out! This is my frustration: environment: trump tower + luxurious experience + great view + Anthony Cristiano name + $110 blowout cost (before tip) does not equal L'Oréal hairspray! This equation does not add up. They use R + Co Shampoo and Conditioner which is what I would expect for a salon of this caliber but I must admit I am quite disappointed with the longevity of my results. I really thought I was going to have this beautiful , unfrizzable, elegant soft curl look that lasted the whole night but by the time I returned to my hotel my curls were gone and by the end of the night I had frizzy straight hair. Again, I think my frustration is because of the caliber of this salon and the fact that they used drug store hairspray and I had to ask for my flyaways to be tamed prior to leaving. All that to say while the experience was lovely, my closing feeling is disappointment as my results were quite lackluster. Perhaps for hair services aside from a blowout they do an exceptional job but this was not it. If you have a lot of fine hair that frizzes easily , this may not be where you want to get your blowout. Michelle started doing my hair in 2006! She put in extensions for my wedding, around 175 pieces. They were gorgeous, easy to maintain, never had any problems whatsoever. Fast forward to 2019, after some health issues, my hair started thinning a bit. I went to a salon in Lakeview that also uses Great Lengths - the same kind Michelle did on me years ago. Within a week, the extensions started coming out. By less than 2 months in, of the 60/70 we put in, I lost at least half. I've been going to that Lakeview salon for YEARS. I knew something was off. The stylist acted like he was so sad this was happening to me but offered NO ANSWERS and no help...just offered to put more in for free. I spent those months devastated. I thought something was wrong with MY HAIR and was seriously depressed thinking it was getting so thin that perhaps it couldn't hold on to the extensions. WRONG. I showed Michelle a video of the bond of one after it came out, and she instantly said, he didn't do a good job of putting the extensions in. The bond wasn't pressed and tight enough. So we started over, Michelle put in 175 pieces. A LOT. It's been 2 months. They are still PERFECT. Not only did not a single one come out proving she was right, but she also placed them expertly, and NO ONE can tell they're extensions. She is so amazing at what she does, and I have sent her multiple messages thanking her for saving me!!!
