There are several tables outside along the sidewalk, 2 of which have a bench so you could seat 4 people if 2 of them squeeze onto the bench. The outdoor seating is half covered and half semi-covered depending what time of day it is. I got the migas, which was a delicious dish. I left out the jalapeños though. Even the side of potatoes was delicious- seasoned well. Hubby got the chicken fried steak. I wasn't that impressed- the gravy made the chicken fried breading all soggy, and the steak was under seasoned in my opinion. The onion rings were great- breading had a hint of sweetness to it. Mashed potatoes were all right too The kids meals- Mac & cheese was really good, not bland. The griddle cake (pancake) was HUGE. Off to a very slow start. One sweet waitress brought us water after close to ten minutes after being seated and said our server would be with us shortly. After another five minutes the hostess was very curt when asked about our server. We had to ask again and she was even nastier. But then Bailey saved the day. We were approaching 30 minutes at this time. She swooped in with a beautiful smile and great attitude. There apparently was some type of crisis with our server. Anyway Bailey saved the day and turned our zero star visit around. If we had started with her, it would be a 5 star review. After several recommendations from neighbors and locals, we decided to try Maxine's after church and weren't disappointed. My daughter and I arrived around 11:15 am after attending early church service. When we checked in we were told the wait would be about 25 minutes. We waited outside where there were tables and chairs. It was early and still pleasant enough out, so the wait wasn't bad. About a half hour later we were called and seated at a table where another party of 2 were seated on the opposite end. The table was large with plenty of space between parties and the folks were pleasant so we had no problem sharing the table. It was nice to have friendly exchange with strangers in these polarizing times! The food was enormously fantastic in every sense! I ordered an iced coffee with caramel flavor and Willie's Hearty Breakfast which included a whopper of a pancake, choice of meat (I chose sausage), eggs (perfectly soft scrambled) and potatoes or grits. My daughter had the chicken and waffle -- the tender breast fillet was perfectly crispy and tasty. She said her sweet tea was the best she's had. The slab of meatloaf was enough to feed a family of 4. I didn't mid the meatloaf. I was just turned off by the mystery ingredient in the mashed potato's. I am a perplexed at what the heck they put in there. And I could not recognize any actual cheese in the macaroni. So disappointed. $20 with iced tea. read more

This was such a fantastic surprise. We had a group of 13 that spent the weekend camping at Bastrop State Park. Our month in advance reservation at another local brunch spot was canceled by the restaurant that morning, so we were scrambling. Maxine's was gracious in adding us to the list and we only had a 30-45 minute wait when it very easily could have been hours. They even managed to sit us all together! We had an amazing waitress (and I forgot her name now, I'm so sorry.) She was quick and attentive. Our drink orders were taken ASAP and on the table in minutes. She took our orders quickly as well, even catching the modifications without a hitch, in a loud corner. None of us had been there, so there were a few questions and she was unphased. We didn't even have a long wait until food was brought out! There was a separate runner that started bringing our plates, and she was a bit overwhelmed by the group size, but then our waitress showed up and took over. She remembered who ordered what and even caught one of the plates that came out wrong from the kitchen and got it handled quickly. All of the food was delicious. And for the price?! Unbelievable. I took half of my combo plate home and it was still great reheated for dinner that night. The biscuits and pancakes are huge, the potatoes are seasoned well, and eggs cooked perfectly. We all got refills promptly and she even brought many of us to go drinks since we told her we were driving far to go home later. I definitely recommend Maxine's and the wait is worth it. In this review, we're doing dessert first! Maxine's pies are phenomenal! When you walk in, you're greeted by a tall pastry case of pie options. I looked them over while waiting for our table, but didn't make up my mind which one I wanted. Then, after the meal our waitress explained the day's varieties, and allowed me to go back up to look at the case once more, once I knew what was what. I settled on the butterfingers pie, which I knew was a risky choice, because it looked and sounded rich and sweet. It was, but it was not overly sweet. It turned out to be a peanut butter butterfingers pie, and the peanut butter balanced out the butterfingers sweetness, but of course made it every bit as rich as it looked. The crust was good too! I've had so many unremarkable pie crusts that I've made a habit out of eating the pie filling and leaving the crust behind. This crust was worth eating. There was also a selection of fruit pies and cheesecakes. It was a little picked over by 12:30 on a Sunday, as to be expected. That leads me to my next point. We arrived at about 12:30 on a Sunday. There was a short wait for a table for 2, but a longer wait for bigger tables. The décor and ambience were cute, as expected. I was a little surprised they were playing modern-ish pop music in the background. As for a main course, I didn't have much because I wanted to save room for dessert. Also, my husband is on a keto diet, so he can't eat his sides. He ordered an omelet, and I had his toast and grits. I probably should have ordered the biscuit and potatoes instead. For my protein, I ordered some scrambled eggs a la carte. I sure wish we could order entrees without being obligated to pay for empty carbs as sides. (Although I don't count dessert as empty carbs, because that's full of joy!) I want to come back here to try almost everything on the menu, but it's probably best for my health that it's way outside of Austin! read more

There was a wait for seating but they have a four seat bar but it was unclear if you need to seated for that or not.....? There isn't very much room to wait inside so most waited outside in a cool blustery Dec Texas morning. The hostess was charismatic welcoming human. The meal: the great! Cute little place in the heart of Downtown Bastrop has sidewalk tables and indoor seating. We waited about 15 min for a table for 2 of us. We ordered Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and brown gravy as well as Fried Okra which was awesome. My steak had way more breading than actual cutlet and when I tasted the cutlet, it wasn't flavorful. The white gravy was good. My mashed taters were homemade and tasty but the brown gravy was super salty and I scraped it off. The coconut cream pie was like an ice box pie and I tasted more cream than coconut. The service was super friendly, awesome locals, the place was crowded and bustling for a Saturday brunch the food tasted fresh, not frozen - my whites were a bit runny and I asked for them not to be - the jalapeño Benedict was amazing, I like how the make the biscuits, the potatoes were cooked crispy like we asked the decor looked like it could use some updating. It was cleanly, though. The drinks didn't run empty and we were sat within 5-10 minutes. Looks like a great place for kids. I'd like to try other things on the menu. The blueberries on the French toast tasted fresh, but I would've liked them with more of a syrup and I felt my French toast was a bit overdone for me personally. I like it a bit more al dente and it's on thin toast and I prefer the thick toast - but that's a personal preference. They have outdoor seating to people watch, I'd like to come back and try more food the bacon was good and perfectly cooked for me! The prices are really good for the portions. The charm of downtown Bastrop...well, I kinda wish my hometown of DS had it. Our Mercer Street is more spread out. Buildings while old don't match Main Street here. Our restaurants are more spread out too. Usually off 290 with a billion cars going by. Had a nice breakfast with the GF at Maxine's. We sat near the kitchen; not always the best spot. But, it was nice to hear our server ask the kitchen to make my bacon to order. Eggs were cooked to my liking (over easy). Biscuit was also on point. As I was writing this review, I noticed another yelper had issues with the home fries in February. For my visit, said taters were perfectly seasoned and fried. GF ordered her usual blueberry pancakes. Nice visit, charming interior, friendly country folks. Need to head back for lunch. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way back from Austin unfortunately we had to wait 1.5 hours before we actually ate something. They told us a 30 minute wait time... it ended up being close to 45 minutes. Finally when we sat down they took another 20 minutes before they took our order.... Then another 40minutes before we ACTUALLY got our food. The waitress also hardly asked if we needed any refills on our drinks. The food was okay! This is a quaint spot in downtown bastrop that has some yummy foods & desserts. Parking in front may be limited but there is additional parking in the back lot. I was told the catfish is really good here & I had a craving for some so we chose Maxines. Im very very particular when it comes to catfish & this catfish definitely is delicious & fresh. It was really really good. Others at the table ordered a reuben sandwich, burger and fried shrimp plate. I heard no complaints at all. Even the onion rings tasted really good. The lemonade they have is tasty as well. Next time I go in I will have to try the desserts. I hear the blueberry cheesecake is delicious so that will be on the table next time. lol If you're in Bastrop, give this plce a try because I believe you cant go wrong with anything on the menu. The chicken fried steak "Full size" was on point. very tender and the crust wasn't hard at all The mash potatoes were very good, lets just say homemade taste.. The mac & cheese was a big thumbs down it tasted more like kaft box man and cheese.
