This place is ok for dim sum. I came here before for a Groupon deal when they first opened and I thought it was good then but I felt like the quality this time around wasn't so good. The Dim sum is made to order by checking off the items on a paper menu and then the submit your order like any other restaurants only thing is it doesn't come out at the same time and double check because they mark it off with thier fingers on the receipt kinda acts as a carbon copy paper where you can put a little pressure it and it marks the receipt like a black pen. Anyways one person accidently marked one of the wrong item and the server almost took back an item we never got. I feel the made to order idea was cool until I tried it. The outside of the dumplings texture was not what I am use to. I'm not sure if it's because it did not steam a long time or what but the outer layer was lacking for me. The inside fillings and flavors we're there but altogether it was not the biz. I probably won't be back for dim sum based on the food I tasted but it was worth a try. I always pick this particular mayflower for dim sum for a nice ambiance. Food - This may be the only mayflower I've been that doesn't go around with the carts. I remember I have to order from the paper menu for dim sum. I also had tried their dinner menu. I love the selection they have and it's pretty nice place to dine even for dinner. Nice Chinese food with nice seating so why not !?! Price - Oh god, please mark down for abalone... are you serious?!? The rest of the menu has fair pricing for both dim sum and dinner. But I didn't so much love the prices this Mayflower location charges in order to pay for that horse. Prices: A - $3 (sesame balls, steamed beef ball, bbq pork bun) B- $4.80 (fried taro puff, deep fried meat dumpling, sui mai) C- $5.50 (beef/chicken rice noodle rolls) D- $6.80 (har gow) K- $8 (special rice noodle rolls, jellyfish, stuffed eggplant/mushroom/green pepper) Fried rice: $16-$20 Xiao long bao (soup dumplings): 5 for $7.50 Unfortunately, no deep fried mango shrimp roll at this location. Many reviews like Mayflower's price point in comparison to Koi Palace's, but my food featured inconsistent temperatures, from lukewarm to piping hot. The service was decently gracious (phenomenal by Chinese restaurant standards), and the interior is a far cry from the vinyl chairs/sticky Formica tables I'm used to at other dim sum places. We went last week and it was an experience we will be talking about for a long time. We went on a weekend and it was very busy so they whisked us away to "upstairs" my parents looked puzzled because of all the times they have been they never knew there was an "upstairs". Well, upstairs we went and it was a large room full of large round tables topped with oversized lazy susans. It was relaxing and spacious. We received a menu and a pencil, with no prices listed we had to just take a leap of faith and go for it. We marked everything we wanted to try family style and off they went to put our order in. Our food came out piping hot in a very relaxed stagger. We were able to enjoy each item and savor all the flavors without the rushed feeling of "we need to eat it all now while it's hot". Everything was PHENOMENAL. We will be baathoroughly enjoyed every bite, even the kids ventured beyond just the fried rice we had ordered for them. We will be back. The reviews are right - the service during dim sum is pretty top notch. An empty plate lasted less than 2 minutes on our table. It is a little pricey, but on par with the rest of the Tri-Valley. I had read about people wanting Xiao Long Bao and I realize, after having their soup dumplings, that you have to stick with a true dumpling place to really enjoy soup dumplings. The Xiao Long Bao are not too bad here, but they don't really hit the high notes that I expect. Good har gow and siu mai and more. We had very unpleasant experience there last weekend. I picked this location simply because it is closer to where my elderly mom lives for easy commute. I booked three tables (from its banquet menu - $538/tbl) three weeks in advance and paid $600 as deposit. Very surprise to me - they did not seem to be normally/basicly equipped - no champagne glass and lacking of right size wine glass, the waiter and waitress seem to be very inexperienced not even with some of the basics - always filling more than half cup while serving wine without guest's consent. The food are not Mayflower quality at all, three of the eight are really tasteless, the so-called "fried rice with dried scallop & egg" are just rice with no scallop and egg. This is obviously the worst one among all the Mayflowers around bay area. What a shame for Mayflower for having this location under their name! read more

My go to dim sum place in east bay! The wait is long and no reservations so make sure you come in early especially if you have a larger party. We brought my wife here to celebrate her passing one of her exams. Like many of the people I follow here on Yelp, I rate it somewhere between a 3 and a 4. The place is beautiful. Decor was definitely a priority. While I'm not 100% sure, there was a big fucking gleaming horse in the entrance way. Everything is sparkling clean. I'd say that the amount of time they spent on getting this right was evident. We ordered black bean clams as they were out of sea bass (which my mom loves), tofu with baby bok choy, and a crab corn soup to share. The crab corn soup was pretty amazing. It was not to overly done w/ corn starch and had the right amount of corn, egg, and crab. While the crab was delicious, we were all skeptical if it were truly fresh from the crab that night. As for the rest of the meal, the tofu and baby bok choy was enjoyable, but not anything magical. Nor was the black bean clams. I've had better black bean crabs. What killed it for me (even though my mom paid) was the price. Expect to pay about $4 more than anywhere else in the free world for Chinese food here. But in defense of their higher prices, you'll have great service and an exceptionally clean and pleasant dining experience. Very good food but too expensive for normal, everyday meals. With large tables and a varied menu, Mayflower is perfect for groups including family gatherings, friends get-togethers or office parties. Their menu has something for everyone. Shrimp & pork siu mai, which are just OK, are classified as a "B" dish. Cost is $4.50 for 4 pieces. The roast pork and s&p calamari, considered "K" dishes, are $8 each. Loved the roast pork. Crispy skin & "meaty" meat, not too much fat. Calamari was a bit greasy. Didn't care for their version of steamed BBQ pork buns. They didn't have enough of the bun to counteract the sweetness of the BBQ sauce. The bun was not as fluffy as I would like. Also, the meat was tough. On my latest visit, my friend & I shared salt & pepper prawns, sticky rice in a lotus leaf, shrimp wonton soup & fried crab claws. I didn't realize there were different kinds of s&p prawns. I persuaded my friend to try the kind deep fried with the shells on. The prawns tasted fresh & were a good size. They were also plump & juicy. Unfortunately, the batter was thick & greasy. If fried correctly, the batter should be light and not greasy. The shells should be crunchy enough to pop the whole morsel into your mouth & eat, shell and all. This is the real, original popcorn shrimp. Today, the shells were just edible but I had to be careful chewing. My friend chickened out. She peeled the shrimp before eating them. I usually love sticky rice stuffed with chicken & preserved egg. The whole thing is then wrapped in a lotus leaf & cooked. The smokiness from the lotus leaf permeates the rice, counterbalancing the sweetness of the rice & the saltiness of the preserved egg. I didn't care for Mayflower's version of this dish. It was a good portion. However, the dish was a bit too sweet & lacked the smokiness I was expecting. The soup with shrimp wontons, carrots, baby bok choy & assorted mushrooms was yummy. The only thing I didn't care for in this soup was what I think was a slice of a giant portobello mushroom. Not a good mushroom to use in a brothy soup. It absorbed so much of the liquid that it became spongy. The piece de resistance were the crab claws. The claws themselves were tiny with not much meat. What buffed them up was the shrimp forcemeat wrapped around the claw. The whole thing is then coated in Panko, deep fried and viola, from wimpy to hefty. So bad for me but so deliciously good. K _ _ P _ _ _ _ _ offers a better version of this dish. Service was silent & aloof but quick & attentive. Servers here actually make eye contact. I got water & tea refilled promptly. Language was still somewhat of a barrier with some of the busboys but the majority of the staff understood English well enough to understand my requests. The one instance of incomprehension occurred when I was trying to order a pot with a blend of 2 teas. The problem was quickly solved when a bilingual server was summoned who was fluent in English. Expensive but not as much as Y _ _ _ S _ _ _ in San Francisco which is prohibitively expensive. In contrast, Mayflower is merely somewhat expensive. Good quality ingredients but not all dishes are good. Overall, flaws are minor. Mayflower will definitely get on my short list of special occasion restaurants. read more

We came here for a family dinner and I was looking forward to some good food, as I've enjoyed eating at one of their other locations. They've got a nice interior, very clean and pretty spacious, definitely going for the upscale Chinese restaurant feel. We got the Westlake beef soup, honey walnut shrimp, Peking spareribs, Fukien fried rice, crispy noodle chow mein, and a couple other dishes, so we had a nice variety of things to eat. All the dishes were pretty tasty, but the portion sizes were very small compared to most other Chinese places. That and everything was super expensive! Like $3-4 more than a similar dish at another Chinese restaurant (and their portion would most likely be bigger). If the food wasn't pretty solid, I'd definitely be giving this place 2 stars instead of 3. Even though I'm giving 3 stars, I definitely won't be back. We are a dim sum loving family! Unfortunately there aren't a lot of places nearby that have legit dim sum. We usually hit up Koi Garden but opted to try this place out to avoid the long wait. Service: We were seated relatively quickly, within 10-15 minutes on a usually busy Sunday lunch. They offered tea and water right away, and gave options of which the we would like. There aren't carts/servers going around with food, which is how I prefer my dim sum, but the menu was extensive and we selected a bunch of dishes to give it a good try. They came out quickly and hot, with empty plates being cleared quickly as well. Food: FRESH daikon cake! Excellent texture on the Chong Fan noodle and all the shrimp dishes were perfect texture. A purple-haired lady served our table, no greetings, no smile and nothing, her only interaction with us was to provide a vague answer for a dish when asked.
