The person taking order does not listen to what we were saying, we are order for two tables, one table was for kids, WAITER PLACED ALL OUR ORDERS TIMES 4, we had so much food on the table and sooo many left over, ended up paying way too much than expected. One of the waiters tried to help. Cut down our bill from $750 to $660, we should have gone to Gen restaurant with $20+ per person and still won't be paying that much, with better food. I guess the problem here was communication. Please have a waiter that speak and understand english or better yet have the servers take orders. They understand what we were trying to say. Tried to order Coke seven times and this waiter keeps giving us water. Finally the server gave us coke, then the waiter came with another set of coke which we don't need anymore but still charged extra coke that we did not consume. What's up with that. I don't understand the controversy over Mayflower. My weekend HK style DimSum visits has always been met with very consistent quality food. This is the best place in the South Bay for quality Cantonese Dim Sum. The price is reasonable. The dimsum are well made and tasty. I could find nothing wrong with the food. In addition to the dimsum cart, they also serve good ala-carte rice porridge. The only other comparable place I can think of in the South Bay is Dynasty. Decent enough food, very lively atmosphere and not seemingly tailored to casual American visitors language wise, which is a good sign for the food in a place like this. Lots of people have mentioned the pushy service, and it is true, you have to say NO two or three times. A good variety of dishes on offer it seemed, but for what is in general as I understand supposed to be a leisurely experience of lingering and sampling the food, the place is way too loud and service too pushy for relaxation to occur in my own opinion. The food here is actually pretty good...but the service was the worst i have ever had. We sat there forever with no one coming by to offer water or tea. When we were ready to order we literally had to waive both hands in the air to get someone to come over. Every time we asked for something the servers gave us a look of disgust. The greeting was non-existent and part of the mediocre service overall. The room is large and not overly crowded with tables. It feels like it belongs in it's neighborhood. With no great anticipation small plates were chosen - shrimp dumplings (har gau), bbq pork pancakes, pea sprout dumplings, etc. and the overall flavor and quality was above average, the shrimp and mango roll among the best I've tasted. We had been told to make sure we visited this restaurant while we stayed in San Jose. We walked in and I got the immediate impression we weren't welcome. We were incredibly polite, but got passed over multiple times when trying to order. I ordered a rice dish and the waiter seemed impressed that the white lady didn't want silverware for her meal instead of chopsticks. My only assumption is that they have had extremely rude white people in here before and they were expecting that from us also. After a while, our waiter seemed to warm to us, but no one else would even make eye contact with us. Sad... because the food was good. Great dim sum but it is a little bit pricy and unlike ordinary dim sum, the food isn't brought around in carts but is ordered. Their Peking Duck is worth the $28 as most of the duck is given to you, the meat is flavorful but not masked out by sauces, and the skin is nice and crisp. I give credit to the food, such as lobster with noodles and duck with bread, which tasted fine. But, the service impacted much of our (my family's) visit for lunch. They did not change our dishes once. Our pot also ran out of tea and we already opened the lid, but we had to call someone over in order to get more. We came near closing time, and they were preparing for the night event by the time we were almost done. I understand there are setups to attend to, but you can't just leave a customer hanging! Wow! What terrific Chinese cuisine! THE best prawns of ANY Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area, delicious Chow Mein (with prawns and/or bbq pork) with those delicate, tiny noodles, seaweed tofu soup that is to die for with prawns, mushrooms and scallops and 3 or 4 kinds of abalone (which we have yet to try)! They have THE largest menu we've ever seen and are very consistent in their food quality which is important given their prices. We were recommended to Mayflower by our favorite waiter at the now-closed Ming's and we haven't been disappointed. Don't go on a Saturday night unless you want to wait due to many wedding receptions there! The take-out is exceptionally good compared with other gourmet Chinese restaurants. Dim sum overcooked! We were looking forward to trying this place but were disappointed. The flavor was fine but pretty much everything was overcooked. The steamed dishes were streamed a little too long so everything was too soft. The wrappers on the shrimp dumplings were mushy and started to disintegrate. Even my elderly parents thought everything was too soft. Fried items were super crunchy to the point that if they had left them in the fryer a little longer they would have been burnt. The beef rolled crepe - the worst ever. They put meat in there that was super chewy that we couldn't even eat it. Service was hit and miss, depending on which waiter or cart lady you talked to. I know it's a while back but we had our new year's dinner there and it was the WORST place on earth!!! DO NOT GO. HORRIBLE food, BEYOND HORRIBLE service. They told us it was going to be a 15 mins wait but we end up waiting for over an hour! The hostess is beyond impolite! She's the rudest person I have dealt with in a long while. WORST service ever and overrated ! The food was just meh. The waiters are rude and totally ignored all your requests. We have to ask four times for ice water and forks. The food took forever to come and we found sticks in the beef chow fun. This review is for Dim sum Lunches only: I figured out why this place has such bad reviews in general. This place caters to their "regular" clientel. The other customers should be able to figure out who the regulars are by looking for the ones walking over to other distant tables and greeting people like they are family, or the older couple that gets the main guys (usually in the black outfits) and dim sum ladies stopping at their table to talk FOREVER. I think because the main guys concentrate on building rapport with the regulars, the newbie guests get overlooked. I have seen this often when one of them plays with my little girl while another customer is desperately trying to flag him down to get the check. I can understand how that is frustrating. I think its important to go to any restaurant regularly, if you want super great service. Perks are only a few extra returns and smiles away. Learn the main guys names. We went to Mayflower the Saturday evening before Mother's day to avoid the Mother's Day crowds. That was a big mistake because there was a wedding banquet going on that night which took up 90 % of the restaurant. We made reservations and the seat was not ready when we arrived. They shuffled our group into the back near the restrooms, in which they had partitioned off a separate area for diners away from the banquet. We sat in a small crowd room - no difference from any typical Chinese restaurant. The service was so TERRIBLE. Everyone knows that Chinese restaurants are not known for their service, but we definitely expected more from Mayflower, given that it's considered one of the top Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. We were pretty much ignored and had to call the wait staff several times to refill our tea and drinks and give us new plates halfway through our meal. It's unacceptable other diners were treated to sub-par service just because there was a wedding banquet. They should not take any reservation because of short of hands on that day. When serving the desert, the waitress scooped the red bean soup and distributed into 10 cups. She with her mad face did not do it one by one; she just spread the soup into where the cups were located and the white table cloth was dirty all over by red bean soup. But the worst had to be that they brought us a seafood clay pot dish mistakenly. Since we had ordered a banquet menu for 10 ppl, we did not notice this was not part of the menu. It wasn't until after we had finished more than half the clay pot that the manager came by and apologized that we had been given the dish by mistake. Most places would usually say, that this was their fault and not to worry about it. Nope, instead, when the bill came, we were charged for the clay pot! It wasn't even worth it to argue as we all just wanted to get out of there. I do not think I will go to Mayflower again. Their food was not good as expected because they were too busy, but it's just not worth dealing with their bad customer service. read more

One of the worst dim sum restaurants I have ever been too. We went there at exactly 10 am thinking it would be jam packed. There were hardly anyone there until 11 am when the rush hour began. Before 11 am was the worst for us. There were no waitors or waitresses who were serving us for the longest time. The food after 11 am were cold and just really bad. My family and I were there for two hours and I will never go back. The food was really subpar. 70% of the food I ate were cold that day and I was really sad. We had a birthday dinner here last September. We spent about $200 for 4 people. We used to go to Canton Delight in Cupertino for last 10 years to eat Peking Duck, Seafood Soup, Seafood Fried Rice, dungeness crab dishes, lobster dishes, steamed spotted prawns(expensive anywhere..but SOOOO~~~~~ good!!) and steamed Rock Cod(this, too is expensive, because they steam the live one for you..). We were so disappointed when Canton Delight closed. So we tried Dynasty in Vallco Mall, but it wasn't good at all. I've been to Mayflower in Great Mall to eat Dim Sum a long time ago, but my husband said Mayflower on Barber Lane is better. We were able to find all the food we wanted at the Mayflower!! We were so happy!! Of course, food is different here and there, but they come pretty close and we were almost satisfied. Canton Delight used to serve Peking Duck in two courses, one dish with the skins and flat tortilla-like breads, and the diced duck meat lettuce wrap. Mayflower sells the duck meat lettuce wrap as a separate dish. Next time we go, we will try a set menu to try other dishes.. There was a wedding banquet right next door so it was bit noisy, However, we had a good food and a great service. If you don't mind spending $200 for dinner, I recommend this place.(It will cost this much at other chinese seafood restaurants, too if you order fresh seafood..) read more
