Shancheng Lameizi Hot Pot - Milpitas, CA is best experienced with people who actually know how Chongqing-style hot pot is eaten. I came with mainland Chinese friends and simply followed their lead - which, in this case, was absolutely the right move. The broth: beef tallow mala, restrained but correct This is a beef tallow (niu you) mala hot pot broth, Chongqing-inspired rather than the heaviest, most punishing street version. The base is aromatic, clean, and layered, without becoming aggressively greasy or one-note. It delivers depth and warmth while still letting ingredients keep their identity. This is not about shock value. It's about control. The dipping sauce matters - and this one was done right The dipping sauce was custom-mixed by a Sichuan native at the table. Oil-forward, yes - intentionally so. The key is timing: ingredients come straight out of the boiling pot while still steaming hot, then dipped immediately into the oil-based sauce. That oil does three things at once: 1. Lowers the temperature instantly 2. Softens harsh surface chili heat 3. Improves tenderness and mouthfeel This is how Sichuan / Chongqing hot pot is actually eaten. Without this step, the food is often too hot and too aggressive to enjoy properly. A partitioned hot pot concept (nine-section inspired), not a textbook jiu gong ge This is not a textbook Chongqing jiu gong ge with rigid historical proportions or classic temperature zoning. Instead, it's a modern, partitioned hot pot concept inspired by the same idea - keeping ingredients separate so flavors stay distinct while sharing the same beef tallow foundation. In this format, ingredient quality has nowhere to hide - and Shancheng Lameizi earns real credit here. Ingredients: freshness shows up immediately · Mao du (beef tripe) - crisp, clean, resilient; excellent texture · Huanghou - commonly referring to beef aorta, prized for crunch and elasticity; stays snappy even with longer cooking when fresh · Thick-cut meat slices - tender, well-trimmed, properly sliced · Dried tofu, wood ear mushrooms, leafy greens - fresh, vibrant, no off notes · Fish and shrimp items - clean and above average (no freezer smell, no watery texture) Everything held structure. Nothing dissolved into the broth. That alone says a lot. Fried dough sticks (youtiao): do NOT soak them The freshly fried youtiao (Chinese donut / Chinese fried dough) were light and crisp, clearly fried to order. Important note: they are not meant to be soaked in the broth. The traditional way is simple: · Eat youtiao dry and crispy, alongside hot pot items · No rice, no noodles at this stage It functions as the starch component of the meal - and it works beautifully. Beer pairing & pacing We paired the meal with Snow Beer (Xuehua), which makes practical sense with beef tallow hot pot: light, clean, and palate-resetting. Craft beer usually fights the spice and fat - this does not. At the end, noodles go in last, absorbing the fully developed broth. Rich, satisfying, and exactly how it should close. Service & experience Service was warm and attentive throughout: · Water refilled proactively · Staff checked in about adding broth · The pacing never felt rushed This is a place that understands hot pot is not fast food - it's a process. Final thoughts Is this the heaviest, most punishing Chongqing hot pot on earth? No. Is it authentically informed, ingredient-driven, and properly executed? Yes. If you come here trying to reinvent the meal, you'll miss the point. If you come with people who know what they're doing - and you follow - this place delivers. Dr. C rating: worthy of return, worthy of respect.

We ordered more meats after this! But $190 for 4 people is not bad!

What first caught my attention about this place was their menu.. they actually offer pig brain as an option!! ! Seeing it on the menu really set the tone for how authentic and bold this spot is. I was curious but definitely was not feeling bold enough to try it... When we arrived, I was immediately fascinated by the entrance. It's completely blocked off and private, giving the place an exclusive, almost hidden feel. Once inside, the first thing that stood out was the sauce bar and wow, it's hands down the biggest one I've ever seen at any hot pot restaurant. They had every sauce and condiment you could think of, plus little extras like individually wrapped snacks and even DIY desserts. I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan of most of the pre-mixed items, but the custom sauce I put together for dipping my meats turned out great. For our soup base, we went with the half spicy broth and half mushroom broth. The spicy side delivered that signature Sichuan kick, but the mushroom broth was the real winner for me. It was absolutely delicious, easily the best mushroom broth I've had anywhere. Rich, earthy, and flavorful from start to finish, it held its depth all the way through the meal, never fading into something bland or watered down. Overall, Shancheng Lameizi delivered a unique hot pot experience. Between the adventurous menu (still thinking about that pig brain!), the impressive sauce bar, and the unbeatable mushroom broth, it's a spot I'd recommend to anyone who wants an alternative version to Haidilao.

This place gets really busy. Glad we got there early for dinner. The food is good and wide selection of choices. The sauce and dessert area was well stocked. The chairs on some of the tables are benches and not very comfortable.

The Food Have not had hot pot for a while, and a friend recommended Shan Cheng La Mei Zi so we decided to give it a try. They mentioned they quite enjoyed their side dish that they offer. We ordered their split soup base with spicy and mushroom. We also had their Beef Combo and Vegetable Combo, along with some a la carte items. The quality of the ingredients was pretty good and presented nicely. But I can see why my friend was hyping about the side dishes. They have a variety of snacks and side with their sauce bar to go alone with the meal. There are items such as hawthorns, shrimp chips, jellies, etc.. It was a nice snack and appetizer to go along with the meal. It was an enjoyable experience and I would recommend trying at least once. The Miscellaneous Shan Cheng La Mei Zi is inside a large plaza, so there is a good amount of parking. The restaurant itself had some nice interior design aesthetics. Their menu has a good selection of items. But I was more impressed with their selection of snacks and side dishes. It was a nice addition to the meal. Their service was also good, no complaints there. This was an interesting hot pot experience, and I would like to return to try out their other selections.

Not sure why there are so many scathing reviews for this place but it actually was quite good and my family and I liked the variety. Service is basic since it's hot pot and you cook yourself. Ambiance is definitely loud. Walking past here I did see they had a pretty good lunch special!

Good vegetables and half broth options. Price was fair. I thought quality of meat could be betters the beef tongue was very lean and chewy. The beef and lamb were good. My wife likes tripe and intestines so hot pot with these options are typically a hit for her. Inside the restaurant is very big and there's several rooms. It was quite busy on a Friday night.

Lunch special for 2 people only $39.99 !

One of my favorite hotpot place in Bay Area ! Nice, clean environment, delicious food, variety of free appetizers and desserts. Friendly staff also !

Good stuff. If you're expecting a Haidilao experience don't go here because this is more authentically Chongqing. The flavor is spicy as hell. The decor was nice. The service seems to get flamed a lot but this is hot pot. Do it yourself. Very filling

This is notably one of my favorite hotpot chain restaurants. While there isn't an AYCE option, I really love the large and unique variety of à la cart menu items to select from. It can get expensive if you go to town and not track what you're ordering. They also have really flavorful broths. Spicy is really spicy, so proceed with caution! If you're adventurous and want to try something exotic, this is the place! Challenge your friend (or yourself) to some pig brains! They have all kinds of funky stuff, you'll have to check it out for yourself. Make sure you order some "fortune bags." You'll have to trust me on this one. They also have a condiments/snacks/dessert bar. Definitely save room for the desserts! The restaurant was very nicely decorated and clean. They have hair ties and glass wiping cloths at the entrance. In the restroom there are complimentary toiletries for freshening up after your meal. Service was quick and friendly.

I think this is a great hotpot spot with lots of options. You can get up to 9 soup bases with the nine boxes square pot, but we only got two soup bases. We got the tomato soup and the mild spicy soup. I think the tomato soup is not as good as HDL's and I would like to try the bone soup next time. I can't handle spices really well but the mild soup was still fairly spicy. They have a huge side bar and lots of free snacks and sauces. Please do note you have to pay $3 for the sauce bar. My favorite item from the menu is the fungus with fresh shrimp curd. The fungus soaks up the soup and paired so well with the shrimp. The meat we got were fresh. The booths were huge and the lights created a nice ambiance. The staffs were helpful and extremely quick. I would recommend this place to my friends!

been thinking about this place so often and finally had the opportunity to stop by again and it did not disappoint! for myself and two other friends what we've ordered this time around was just the perfect amount and we were able to share a lot of various dishes which I love and appreciate the variety. we had ordered the fatty beef belly , the angus ribeye, and short rib for meats. for the rice cakes, spinach (cook it in a non-spicy soups if you have the option because sometimes the oil might soak up through the leafs and it could be quite difficult to eat), enoki mushrooms, seaweed (came in slices not knots - which is actually pretty difficult to cook), lotus roots, tofu skin rolls, and potatoes. 10/10 still recommend this spot (already wanting to go back as im writing this review). The ambience is very relaxing and pretty intimate and great for small parties. and the service was pretty attentive and I appreciate how quick everything came out!

I ordered Togo today, I asked for small container for the sauce and the guy said they charge it for two Dallas something and he's said they will put the sauce on the side but I didn't see any sauce.

The place is beautiful, it reminds of ancient China days. I love it!! The service is spot on, they are super attentive, friendly, and easy going. We ordered more, but we started eating I forgot to take more photos. We also got Kobe, prawns, and combination mushrooms. I like Seapot too. It's definitely different, this is not all you can eat. Seapot is modern looking. You don't get some of the exotic stuff that you would find at Seapot. For examples brain, pork blood, I believe I saw pigs ears, and chicken feet too. I don't eat those particular parts of animals. If you're someone that enjoys that, this spot is for you. This is our second time there. I will definitely come back, that's how much I enjoyed it. The food was fresh and impeccable.

Although it's called Chili Garden, their Sichuan dishes are not as good as their Northeast dishes, which are the most authentic. After coming here a few times, I recommend the 锅包肉 (Sweet and Sour Pork) and 拔丝地瓜 (Sweet Potato). I've ordered a few of their Sichuan plates, but none are authentic enough that I can recommend. The prices are a little steep for the amount of food. Since I'm pretty sure the boss is a Northeastern Chinese, I recommend ordering dishes that are from that region, and be prepared to embrace some quirky flavors of other Chinese cuisines that aren't present in their authentic counterparts. The staff were a bit rough around the edges, but they did what was expected of them. The place is spacious with several tables and on a Saturday evening there were plenty of tables and no wait. We were seated immediately. Scan the QR code for the menu. We got the Japanese tofu sizzling plate, chongqing style spicy noodles, and achoy sautéed in garlic. The Japanese tofu was definitely our favorite of our meal. It came out sizzling on a plate and each piece of tofu was silky soft inside with a savory and umami sauce on the outside. Perfectly balanced and seasoned. The chongqiing noodles were okay - tasted fine but didn't blow us away. I thought it would be spicier and more numbing but it wasn't too spicy. The noodle texture was normal and the flavor felt like it could use something more. The achoy with garlic was good although I personally felt it could use a little more garlic. The staff do walk around and so you can flag someone down if you need someone. They won't bother you much during your meal. No American Express accepted here, only visa and Mastercard. Overall, it was good and we'd certainly come again for the tofu, but it didn't feel outstanding in total.

The service was quick and attentive, and the restaurant itself was nicely decorated. The best thing we ordered was the Sizzling Yellow Croaker with Fried Garlics (9/10). The fish was super crispy, and the sweet, garlicky skin was incredibly addictive. I would 100% order this every time I come back. We also had the Shredded Cabbage with Sliced Pork (8/10), which was nice and tangy. The cabbage soaked up all the sauce, making every bite packed with flavor, while the pork provided a great contrast to the vegetables. The House Special Fried Rice with Pickle & Beef (7/10) wasn't anything extraordinary, but it served as a great base alongside the other dishes. The pickles were an interesting addition, as I've never had fried rice prepared that way before, but I definitely enjoyed it. Finally, we decided to try the House Special Spicy Frog in Stone Pot (6.5/10) since most of us had never had frog before. The flavor was outstanding, with a great umami depth and just the right amount of spice. The frog itself was a little difficult to eat because of the large number of bones, but the meat was tender and juicy. Replacing the frog with another protein probably would have made it more favorable, but I still enjoyed trying something new and didn't regret ordering it. Overall, Ping's Bistro is a great spot for outstanding Chinese food. Every dish we tried was enjoyable, and there are still so many items on the menu I'd love to come back and explore. Though I prefer my food a little bit more flavorful, Ping's Bistro really shot every single flavor up. The Steamed pork belly with preserved vegetables was served first, and without a doubt, is one of the spiciest. It's a good size for sharing, but the preserved vegetables on the bottom was mushy and came in a very small portion. Though supposed to be a part of the dish, seemed to be thrown in just for some extra flavor. Though I selected mild spiciness for the Spicy Boiled Fish, it was still REALLY spicy. Maybe it's my spice intolerance, but this dish lights a fire in your mouth. Also, this dish is mala, so it numbs your mouth. Some people may enjoy this sensation, but it's a pass for me. The fish was really soft and tender though. The fish was my favorite part of the Spicy Boiled Fish. Not only there is fish underneath, it was surprising to see other ingredients like lotus, vermicelli noodles, and much more. The salted egg covered pork was extremely salty and oily. I was surprised to know it was boneless, and I felt like the salted egg crust is too thin, which let the taste of the pork overthrow any type of salted egg taste. The Country Style Sautéed Pork with Eggs and Black Fungus was again one of my preferred dishes, though it was extremely oily. I really liked the egg, black fungus, and bell peppers in this dish. The eggs and black fungus were soaked with flavor and the bell peppers balanced out the heaviness. The pork was also alright, but more on the tougher side. If you were to come to Ping's Bistro, I would advise you to order the Country Style Sautéed Pork with Eggs and Black Fungus. The floors were really sticky, but other than that, everything was alright. The water was poured messily, but I guess it's no big thing. The staff were really quiet and avoided interaction. When they serve your dish, they never wait an extra second before they leave for any questions or requests. They just drop the dish and zoom away. From my review, just remember: saltiness. I'm not convinced that I'll come back again, but I'm glad I tried it out.
