My husband and I have been to this restaurant four times now, and this visit we decided to bring my parents. They absolutely loved both the atmosphere and the food! One of the nice perks is the complimentary black fungus side dish and seasoned peanuts, which are always a great start to the meal. This time we ordered the poached chicken with scallion oil, squirrel fish, Peking duck (with the added soup), and cauliflower. Overall, everything was delicious. The scallion oil paired with the poached chicken was especially flavorful. We've had the squirrel fish before and loved it, but this visit it wasn't quite as good as we remembered. The Peking duck was excellent--the skin was perfectly crispy--and the cauliflower ended up being everyone's favorite dish. The service was outstanding as always. I used to happily recommend this restaurant to friends because it was one of the few places that served authentic Suzhou cuisine. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was disappointing enough that I probably won't be coming back. The biggest issue is the food. Many of their signature Suzhou dishes have been removed from the menu, which was honestly the main reason to visit in the first place. The remaining dishes also felt very different from what I remembered, and not in a good way. I'm not sure if they changed chefs, but the quality has definitely gone downhill. For example, the sweet and sour pork ribs tasted sweet with almost no tanginess at all, and the salted egg yolk shrimp was overwhelmingly salty. If the restaurant is no longer serving the dishes that made it special, there's really not much reason for me to choose it over other Chinese restaurants in the area. The service was equally disappointing. We ordered a large meal and had barely started eating when staff repeatedly came over to check how far along we were and subtly rush us out because they claimed other reservations were arriving. The strange part was that there was no line at the door and plenty of empty tables throughout the restaurant. It made us feel unwelcome and rushed, which is never how a dining experience should feel. Overall, this place has lost the qualities that originally made it worth recommending. Jiang Nan Delicacy takes over where Vung Tau 2 used to be close to Coco Tea and Juice. The parking is challenging during lunch peak hours. The interior is stylish and modern. They do have some separate rooms for larger groups of people. The service was nice and friendly. The menu is via QR code on each table. I was pleasantly surprised when she brought some complimentary appetizers of roasted peanuts with salt & seaweed and also a cold woodear mushroom appetizer. Both were delicious! The woodear mushroom was seasoned with a black vinegar, garlic slivers, and some red chili peppers. I ended up just ordering the Suzhou Style Poached Pork Belly Noodle. The broth was rich, deep, and flavorful. The noodles were delicately cooked al dente so it still have a nice chew. The tea Egg was cooked through and pork belly was tender but firm. I had been binge watching a lot of cdramas lately and in one drama, I saw the squirrel fish and in another drama, I saw the garden rice cake. While I was searching through Yelp, I found this restaurant which servers both dishes so I sent hubby to buy food from here. We ordered the squirrel fish, one garden rice cake, and grandma Chinese bacon vegetable rice. As for flavor, the squirrel fish was good but you'll definitely have to eat this with rice. The tanginess from the sauce was slightly overpowering, should you decide to eat it alone. The garden rice cake was ok. The exterior had no flavor and the inside was filled with jujube paste. A new spot to get Suzhou classics, I was shocked to find something of such high quality in the Bay. As someone who grew up around Suzhou cuisine shared with me by relatives, I can attest that the dishes here capture the same sweet and savory flavors found in Jiangsu. When ordering, the absolute must is the 'Squirrel Fish' (松鼠桂鱼). The most famous Suzhou dish, it features a lightly battered and fried fish with sweet and sour sauce drizzled over it. Given the complexity, it's a dish that's hard to come by in most restaurants so definitely take advantage to order here. Other classic dishes include the sweet osmanthus lotus root stuffed with sticky rice and the dongpo pork. If you're looking for a spot to try high quality, classic Suzhou, Jiangsu cuisine, this is a must-try. Its very hard to find good Peking duck in the bay area, especially one that let you do "one duck three dishes" - skin with powdered sugar, duck skin and meat wrap, deep fried duck rack (optional duck soup). Im most impressed with the duck skin with sugar, first time seeing this in the states the skin is cut without any fat. The squirrel fish tastes super as well. Tastes like home, authentic Shanghai/suzhou/jiangnan food. We were susceptible about this shop being hyped, and we didn't have high expectations when entering. The first dish being meatball soup set the bar. I'm not personally a meatball fan however this one attracts me with right amount of sauce and ingredients. The sour-spicy dish is usually a regular everyday dish, but it tastes so well with fried dough. Also it's not too sour or spicy as what a shanghaiese would like. The sea bass is a bit saucey. Fried veggie rice is meeting the standards. What is worth notifying is their free appetizer being very flavorful. My mom had been wanting to try out this new spot that took over one of our favorite spots, the legendary Vung Tau II. This spot was delcious. Highly recommend the garlic grilled prawns - they are HUGE and plentiful, coming on a sizzling stone platter. - This spot wasn't a hit with my dad - he said the food was too oily; I on the other, thought it was amazing. - I apperciated that the server asked if there were any allergies on their own acord - the only thing was.. I haven't been to this Milpitas plaza in a long time but they seem to be getting a ton of good restaurants and stores! Jiang Nan Delicacy is one of the ones that belongs in this category. [[ Location ]] If you go around 5pm, there will be plenty of parking in this large plaza but we finished the meal around 7pm and it was pretty packed. This is because this place has Lions Market, the Chang Fen place, Highland Noodles, etc. There's a lot of good food here and it can get packed. [[ Restaurant ]] Like other reviewers have said, the exterior might not look like much and is covered with shades but the inside has a touch of "fine dining" to it. Everything was very clean, modern, and had a nice feel to it. Definitely a great place to take a date or have a nice meal with your loved ones. [[ Food ]] This is where this place shines. I love EVERY dish that we ordered although the portion sizes weren't always the largest. The taste is exquisite and I feel like they nailed popular dishes that you can get elsewhere with more refinement. I don't think you really can go wrong with any dish here. Hot and Sour soup with Chinese doughnuts - Very good hot and sour soup that had the right amount of slow heat build up without being too sour to drink. Newly opened Chinese restaurant in Milpitas! They specialize in Suzhou cuisine, which is from the region near my hometown - so I definitely wanted to check it out. The interior is very clean and modern, and the staff were very friendly. They only take reservations for parties of six or more, so we walked in shortly after they opened and were seated right away. My favs in the five dishes are the 生煎包 (fried dumpling) 4.5 * and 菜飯 （rice with bacon & veggies) 5* all other dishes (see pics) are about 3.5* to 4* Need to come back to try the signature dishes of this cuisine that includes a fried fish dish & braised bacon meat & pork meat ball & many others... I would like to try some other items here to get a better idea of what the signature dishes are. This place is a little pricier than the average Chinese restaurant but food is tasty. Interior is nice and clean. I don't know too many restaurants that serve Jiangnan/Suzhou cuisine so I say kudos for the originality. I heard this style of cuisine tends to be on the sweeter side compared to dishes from other regions of China. Our first time today, we decided to check out this place with typical Shanghai dishes. The food was above average of most Shanghai restaurants. Positives: Shanghai fried rice was tasty. We liked the Squirrel fish, the *sauces* of short rib and eel. Lacking: (1) Chinese tradition is drinking tea. We were served with ice water! (2) Menu is QR code web based. Menu has no Chinese while the translation in English was not precise. It was hard to figure out what is what. Why not make printed menu? (Attached receipt with both English and Chinese.) (3) First course served was Lotus root desert while Chinese tradition desert is last course! (4) Short rib made from stewed meat, not the Shanghai deep fried crispy short rib. (5) Eel was from frozen and the texture was mushy. (6) The rice in the fried rice was a little under cooked. (7) Service was minimum while business was not busy. The least they can do is changing plates while fish had bones, short rib had bones, food had different sauces in the plate. This is my third time coming and I tried four new dishes on top of a dish I tried previously today. I seriously enjoyed all the dishes! Portions for some of the dishes were small but the taste was great and I never feel uncomfortable after eating. Service overall was good and one of the servers was even careful on deciding where to place the dishes since our whole table was full. Only small suggestion is that the other came to ask our table and the table next to us how we're liking the dish. The table next to us had two people and each ordered a small meal. Both our table and their table said the food was great so later that table next to us who had two people each received a dessert in a cup and was told it was on the house but our table of three people didn't get any. It doesn't leaves a good impression on customers when treatment isn't the same and it's done out in the open when both tables expressed a liking for the food. Also, it wasn't like we ordered only a little (ordered 5 dishes for 3 people). Interesting chinese opera like music was playing in the background today and about four tables were filled throughout our dinner. Chef's cooking is seriously delicious! Was very excited about this restaurant opening, finally a new Southern China restaurant open in East Bay(kind of). Restaurant's deco is nice, simple and elegant. Services are super nice and very attentive but the food was a big disappointment. Not many options from the menu, and the food tasted very much like pre-made then re-heat. Had very high expectation for the Shrimp Meat with Fresh Gorgon Fruit, it turned out to be a big disappointment because the shrimp was very fishy. I understand it's hard to get fresh river shrimp here but it's not hard to use ocean shrimp to make this dish tasty. We had to mix with a lot of vinegar to make the shrimp edible. Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish $66.70, they used frozen pre-made package for this dish. The sauce was nice (pre made and ship from China), fish was not crispy which means they just re-heat it, not cooked from the kitchen. Most of the dish tasted like re heat because the color of the food just way too dark. Any dish with soy sauce will turn darker and darker after each time re heat it. They completely destroyed Huaiyang Crab Roe Large Meatball Soup , it just 3 very dry meat ball. The chef basically just needs to heat up the pre-made food. Kind of like my kids cook the left ver at home. I give 2 starts, 1 for the ambiance, 1 for the service. Food in general is high price with low quality(3 of us spent over $320) If you have never tasted authentic Jiang Nan cuisine and want listen to a little bit Pingtan during meal then you can try this place. A Truly Outstanding Dining Experience! Our server checked in frequently to make sure everything was to our liking, and the restaurant, including the restrooms, was spotless. The tableware and tables themselves looked brand new! This was, without a doubt, the best "Pine Nut Fish" I've had in the Bay Area! It was also incredibly large - definitely a must-try. The Peking duck was another highlight; the skin was perfectly crispy and completely grease-free. Plus, it came with hawthorn berries to wrap inside, which was a fantastic touch! Similar to japanese egg tofu but made fresh w/ black bean. The tofu was made with black bean so it makes it grey but doesn't really have the fermented black bean taste. It was still very good. 2. Went there for early dinner tonight. Terrible. After walking in, there were a couple playing some chinese musical instrument & either singing or talking some foreign language. Total annoyance throughout dinner. Paying customers should be allowed to eat in peace. My sister treated us, but I looked at the menu, absolutely overpriced. To add insult to i jury, they have no paper menus! Imagine how's that like for someone like me with glaucoma issues. The wrap for the peking duck was ice cold. The waitress even neglected to remove the saran wrap from the peking duck condiments. Unbelievable. I don't care for chinese food too much, but the waiter couldn't even understand we want some vinegar with the shrimp dish. The egg rolls have nothing inside, I think they're charging $3 each. Once when the waitress removed a dish, she came back with the bowl & asked if we still wanted some remnants left inside by pointing inside. That was nice but why just transferred that to a little bowl automatically? When the soup dish bowl came out, the waitress just left? How were going to drink it with no bowls & spoons5? The wait staff is nice, but they need to be better trained for the food prices they're charging. The kid sitting next to me didn't even had a table setting until we asked. Even the table water jar has a weird cap, I spilled the water twice. Glass bottle on a glass table top don't really go well together, good thing it didn't shatter. Would I go back?
