I have never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. I visited Maz Mezcal with my legitimate service dog, expecting to enjoy a quiet meal. Instead, I was confronted by our server, Gladys, whose tone and attitude were hostile from the beginning. Rather than respectfully addressing any concern, she repeatedly told us to "leave," making it clear that we were no longer welcome. What makes this even more frustrating is that the restaurant was nearly empty. There were only two other diners seated in a different dining room, so the explanation that my service dog posed a safety concern in a busy aisle simply did not reflect what was actually happening. Had someone politely asked me to reposition my service dog, I would have done so immediately. Responsible service dog handlers understand the importance of keeping pathways clear. That was never the issue. The issue was the disrespectful way we were treated and being asked to leave because I was accompanied by my service dog. Afterward, I contacted the owners hoping they would acknowledge what happened and take responsibility. Instead, I received a response focused almost entirely on defending their employee rather than addressing her conduct or the impact it had. Their lack of accountability was as disappointing as the incident itself. Every person who relies on a service dog deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Unfortunately, that was not my experience at Maz Mezcal. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone who uses a service animal or expects to be treated with professionalism and respect. read more

This is one of the few Mexican restaurants in NYC that comes close to Tex-Mex, which is my favorite style of Mexican food. The service is very good, and the prices are fair considering the quality and generous portions. I definitely recommend it! read more

Was craving tex mex baddd and being from Texas, that's a hard craving to satisfy in NYC. Maz Mezcal honestly did not do a bad job, I enjoyed this meal. I got the Enchiladas Combinadas platter which featured three different enchiladas, rice, and refried beans. The chicken and cheese enchiladas were pretty good. Seasoning on the chicken was nice and the red sauce worked well with it. The beef enchilada I thought was just fine and lacked a bit of depth to it. Rice was fine and beans were great. I also got chips and the Salsa Verde on the side which was also okay. I did love the flavor and heat of the salsa but it was very runny and hard to scoop up with the chips. This has always been on my list to check out and I am so happy I did! The minute you walk in, you will be greeted by so many colors and patterns and the decor is absolutely beautiful. From the walls, the stairs, and even the bathroom tiles. I opted for the Sekaloff's Fiesta which included a sample platter of beef and chicken fajitas, quesadillas, flautitas and grilled rajas de chorizo, accompanied with guacamole and mole dip. I thought this was pretty great and my favorite bites had to be the quesadillas and the mole dip. The mole was delicious and nicely balanced. The quesadillas in my opinion were one of the best I ever had. The ratio of bread to cheese was evenly balanced and proportioned and then the fry on that was perfect for me. Each bite I had had a really great crispiness and then a barrage of flavor. I actually wish I had ordered some quesadillas to go. The only downside for me in this dish was that the beef fajitas were a bit tough to both cut through and chew through. Some of it was medium rare and the others were well done. I had a hard time cutting through them even with a knife. I never had flautitas before but I found myself really enjoying them! I do wish the chicken inside could've been shredded to make the biting a bit easier but otherwise a really great dish! Considering it is the upper east side, the menu is a bit pricier than what I usually pay for Mexican food however, I thought my money here was well spent . read more

Corn was really flavorful and served on a stick like a popsicle! Service was really good as well. For over a decade I thought this was the best mole in the city. That is no longer true. The recipe is different. I'm not sure what changed or who changed it but it's definitely sweeter and it taste like a little bit more like cinnamon. I don't know if there in it but that's what it taste like to me. And because it's no longer that I'll probably won't be coming back here. I often walk past this place, and it seems to always be busy, so I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered online and took it to-go. I got the Enchiladas Combinadas with 3 cheese enchiladas. It came with rice and beans and was $24.99 with tax. Honestly, I wasn't very impressed. I'm from Texas, so I'm picky about my Mexican food. My biggest complaint was that the red sauce wasn't very good. I wish they had a chile con carne or similar option. Overall, the food could be better and is overpriced for what you get. read more

Unappetizing food, dull ambience, complimented with lazy and terrible service and equally terrible Cocktails. My friend called it the worst restaurant in NYC she has ever been to. My advise is to stay away unless you have no bench mark for Mexican food. Skinny cocktails were overtly sugared despite us specifying that we do not like sweet cocktails. We tried telling our server but he showed zero interest in making any amends. He was the classic example of an unskilled and disinterested person who can literally screw up your business. Spicy chicken mole was very sweet. When we told the server, he casually remarked that it's just written as spicy but it isn't suppose to be. I don't know what that really means. On insisting that he takes it back and ask the chef to make amends, he simply told us to add habanero sauce ourselves. Vegan platter was unappetizing in appearance and taste. There was no sauce or seasoning on it except salt. We were foolishly persistent and tried telling our server for the 3rd time as to how terrible the dish was. He simply nodded and left. Also tried charging us $3.5 each for habanero sauce and mango salsa, which is given complimentary at restaurants. We finally gave feedback to the owner, though it was too little too late. Our bad as well as we didn't know she was around. Appreciate that she was very receptive to it and offered to refund a part of our bill. Definitely make it a point to end up here a few times a month, and never disappoints. First off, their frozen margaritas are the BEST, so smooth, so many flavors and super subtle. Sometimes places go all out with so much syrup they end up gross, but not here. My favorites are the green apple and the coconut. Try them! Love sitting at the bar, but...due to Covid been trying to hang outside for a bit, and luckily the weather has been allowing this. Anyway, bartenders are AWESOME, attentive and on point. You always get started with chips and a trio of salsas...the green is spectacular! We usually just do drinks and snacks here, so I can't speak for the menu. The chicken quesadilla is excellent, and almost double stuffed! Love their chorizo nachos, and I LOVE when places do individual nachos (as well as the messy ones!) because then you know each chip is going to be good :) We've had some other things during on adventures (their queso dip is also excellent!) but usually just head there for margs and guac. read more

Came in on a Friday evening and was sat without a reservation immediately. As a group of four we ordered the elote, app sampler platter, chips and salsa, some tacos, and a quesadilla. The star of the show was the elote - it was perfectly seasoned and it left me wanting another ear. Also they have a spicy mustard salsa that I would happily drink. Outside of that, everything fell totally flat. The beef tacos weren't well seasoned, the quesadilla was stuffed with chicken and we couldn't even tell there was cheese in it. Winter Beer lives very close to this restaurant and raves about it. So, we decided to meet here for lunch. When we arrived we asked about the outdoor seating if we could take a seat. The staff looked confused so we just took a table outside. When we were seated I asked for a napkin because I wanted to wipe my hands. This was met with confused looks. They dropped the menu on the table and 15 minutes later they arrived with silverware. Again, I asked for a napkin to wipe my hands and didn't get it until almost 30 minutes later. Before we even got a chance to look at the menu, they kept coming by to take our order. Winter Beer got a margarita ($11.50) and I asked if the soda was fountain or canned. They said they would check and let me know. They said they had both and I asked for a can of Coke ($3). We placed our order and that was basically the last we saw of them until we flagged them down. After we ordered maybe 10-15 minutes later, they gave us a bowl of chips and a platter of three sauces. I thought the salsa was delicious. We ordered a plate of nachos to share. Usually, when I order nachos ($9.25), I get huge stack of chips and meat. Basically big enough for a meal. I was disappointed that we got 8 chips with meat and sauce. This was barely enough food and a huge disappointment to me. I don't think I ever seen nachos that looked like this. WB ordered the Enchiladas Verde ($21.95) and they enjoyed it. I got the Arroz Camaron ($27.95) and thought it was okay. I found two pieces of shrimp that was under cooked and had a bit of gray on them. The rice was very salty and tasted like someone just poured a ton of Goya seasoning (Abodo?) on it. The rice with the side of beans tasted a bit better. While consuming our entree, we had asked for another refill on our beverages. I made it very clear I wanted another canned soda. My friend got their beverage within 10 minutes. I had to constantly remind them for my soda. I had to stop eating and was waiting for my beverage because of how salty the rice was. Almost 30 minutes later they bought my soda and of course, it was a fountain soda that had no flavor and was flat. We ordered Tres Leches ($9.50) and Sopaipillas ($10.50) for dessert. I like tres leches cake but this one was disappointing. The cake itself was very dense and hard. The frosting was very overpowering and it felt like this was boxed cake mix with milk poured on it. I had traditional tres leches at quite a few Mexican parties and they were 10,000x better than this. The Sopaipillas were no better. They barely had any taste to them. They were topped with cheap tasting honey (I am looking at you those cloying sweet teddy bear shaped honey jars that are like dirt cheap and taste like it) that was just overpowering. This place was severely lacking with the customer service and the food. The prices do not match the quality and portion size. I will probably never visit again even if I didn't pay for it. I feel like if you never had authentic Mexican food you might enjoy this otherwise, this place will be a disappointment to you. read more

I am a big fan of Max Mezcal and last nights visit DID NOT disappoint. The service is top notch, never an issue with waiting for your server. The crew is on the ball and will take care of you in a professional manner. I ordered the mole chicken. The mole was full of flavor and spice which made everything nice. The chicken was prepared perfectly and was juicy not dried out. Marry that with the mole and you have an amazing dish. I also ordered the mezcal margarita which was fantastic. The owner/person at the front scolded my son for dropping some taco cheese on the floor. It was a very odd reaction given that he is 6 years old and is just a kid. It ruined our experience and night out and she made him stand up in the MIDDLE of dinner to clean it up. The food was very delicious. The drinks were great. The service was top notch. Growing up in East Harlem, I've always been around Mexican food, and it's one of my favorite cuisines when dining out. This was my 3rd time coming to this place since my friend used to live next door and loves this place. The vibe here is fun. They've done a great job at decorating with lots of Mexican artwork and bright colors. They have outdoor seating, a bar area, a smaller dining area upfront, and an additional dining area in the back. The service here is always friendly and attentive. The food here is just ok, in my opinion. I'm not sure how to describe it since it's not bad, but it's definitely not food that I would daydream about or crave to eat again. On my last visit, I ordered the shrimp quesadilla. The quesadilla was pretty small and a bit oily. The presentation was also lacking with only 2 sliced tomatoes and guacamole on the plate. People seem to be drawn here for the margaritas. I would highly recommend the tamarind mezcal margarita, it was really great! The regular margarita was mediocre. If you're a fan of great Mexican food, the food here will probably be underwhelming, so it's best to come for the happy hour and stick with the drinks. read more

It hurts me to write how disappointed I am in this restaurant. This place was awful!!!! The attitude of the manager was so beyond horrendous and inexcusable. I really didn't like the fact that the tortillas of the quesadilla were fried & it barely had any taste. The ground beef tasted like Taco Bell meat! Sat at the bar with a few friends after work. The place was not very busy but it was still a fun but chill ambiance. Definitely not a happy hour for early 20 year olds, but great for smaller groups of friends who want to be able to hear each other talk. Also some of the bestttttttt bar service I've ever had! Such sweet bartenders at this place! I got the prickly pear margarita and it was a very balanced flavor, not too tart and not too sweet. We also ordered flautas and the vegetariano combo, both were good but the vegetarian food was actually the crowd favorite and the portion was great, however I thought it was a bit pricey (makes sense for the neighborhood though). As someone who really enjoys authentic Mexican food I would rate the food a 3/5 but the bar service and drinks deserve a 5/5 so settled on a 4! read more

My neighborhood restaurant, Maz Mezcal on 86th street, between 2nd and 3rd Ave. on the Upper East Side, is AWFUL. Terrible food, awful service, and awful management. We were two people for dinner, the back room was empty, a woman in the back room gestured to the 4 top by the window, before we could sit at the table, one of the servers/bussers told us we couldn't sit there and sat us at a deuce (2 top). For most of our meal, it was only the two of us in that dining room, no one else was in that back room. We ordered nacho combo and it was terrible. It was an oval plate with individual tortilla chips with melted cheese on each chip and some ground beef or chicken on it, the tortilla chips were lined in a circle on the perimeter of the plate, in the middle of this oval circle of singular tortilla chips with some cheese and meat/chicken, was shredded lettuce and a few scraps of peppers in the middle of the plate, with the smallest mound of guacamole. I ordered a side of guacamole, because that little mound in the middle of the plate was the sorriest looking guacamole lump, and the side guacamole that came was a small ramekin of the guacamole with garnish. The presentation was just awful, sad looking tortilla chips with cheese and meat/chicken that tasted warmed over and old. The dessert, we ordered buñuelos and churros, was even worse. Buñuelos are a traditionally Spanish dessert and it's fried dough in a twisted form, like the shape of an 8, with syrup on top; what came were what looked like tortilla chips with with whipped cream and sprinkles. The churros were disgusting, they tasted so old I spit it out into the napkin. I never complained about the food, but I left those desserts uneaten. Towards the end of our meal two people were seated at the 4 top by the window that we were told we couldn't sit at. I told the busser/server, the person who told us we couldn't sit at that 4 top, that it's not right that we were told we couldn't sit at that table, and now another party of 2 are being seated there. I never yelled at the man, I simply told him that it wasn't right especially given that the dining room was completely empty. He said it was the manager/owner, an older woman with a cane who greeted us when we came into the restaurant, who decided what party could sit there. Next thing I know, the woman comes to talk to us, I thought she was going to apologize and explain the situation, but instead she came with a terrible attitude, chastising me and telling me that I had no right to be angry at the staff, that she makes the decisions about who can sit at what table, and that she wouldn't have sat us at the 2 top we were sitting either, because there's a couple who always sits there. I was appalled by her, the food, and the service. The funny part is that because I've worked in the service industry when I was a teen, I can never leave less than 20% tip, so of course I left a little more than a 20% tip for terrible food, terrible and very rude management, and terrible service. read more

So here I am, more than 10 years after writing my original Maz review and I am still as much in love this place as I've ever been. Even in the middle of the current pandemic, I've still been making sure to hit Maz Mezcal at least once or twice a month. The food, drink and service are all just too good for even Covid to keep me away. I love everything about Maz Mezcal. They consistently make the best margaritas on the planet.
