Decent Mediterranean cuisine for the area. I ordered my lentil soup and platter for takeout. The food tasted pretty good, but I felt they really shorted me on the portions. My cup of soup was only filled halfway and I barely got any rice to accompany my meats. I'd probably consider coming back and eating in to see how they serve the portions. read more

Discovered a new favorite! The meal I had, a beef shish kabob dinner, was everything I had hoped for, meat was tender, the hummus smooth and creamy with a hint of nuttiness, yummy dolmas and topped everything off with baklava, so good! Best middle eastern food I've had in ABQ, which is nice, since my other place closed down. Can't even remember what I got, but it was great. Once again, I'd give them 4.5 stars because of slowness, but maybe super-slow days make that happen. Nice, clean, well-designed place, the waiter did the job right, and we will be back. It's in the brickyard, so if you go during peak hours when UNM classes are in session you may have to hunt for parking, pay for parking, or walk a long way. read more

Bottom Line First: Tasty, economical food from friendly folks in a pleasant interior located near UNM just off Central Ave. Usual UNM parking hassles apply. WILL I GO BACK? Likely not, which is a shame given the good food at decent price. The location kills it for me. PROS: - Cheap enough prices: Sweetened peach green tea $2 Kefta wrap & fries $8 Tax $0.75 - Food was well spiced & very tasty. Kefta wrap (spiced burger in tortilla) had flavorful impact to the last bite. Spiciness was hot enough to register without overwhelming. Flavor was full and robust. - Dipping sauces were tasty: mild yougurty sauce (like tatziki without cucumber) & a hot chile sauce (slightly sweet like harissa but with extra heat added). Spicy red sauce was hot enough that I favored the yogurt sauce after a few trips through the land of red with the kefta wrap. - Turnip pickles pinkish in color are made in-house and are mildly vinegary. Crunchy al dente texture. Excellent discovery. - Other greenery & veggie bits on plate were ordinary stuff. - Food came to table well heated & hot. Kefta wrap came bundled up in aluminum foil. Bottom of tortilla had some nice browning on it were it had spent time on the flat-top being heated. - French fries arrived in heated metal bucket/cup that kept them well heated to end of meal. - Service from waiter was friendly & courteous. No grouchiness from the staff. - Interior is clean and pleasant. Palette is restrained & subdued with splashes of bright red to liven it up. Stamped metal panels and alphabet woodblock theme offer pleasant texture and contrast. Very pleasant color scheme. Easy on the eyes. CONS: - Location, location, location! Just south of Central Ave on Harvard Dr SE, Mazaya Cafe lies pretty much at the heart of UNM area Parking Hell. If you can't find on street parking (impossible at lunch time), you have to figure in a couple dollars or so more for lot parking. - Not quick hit-&-run food. Total time for lunch was just over an hour. While food tasted great to me and arrived very hot to the table, it took a long time to arrive. Lunch in a half filled (or less) state of seating took about twenty minutes to half an hour after ordering to arrive. While I have pretty much unlimited time on my schedule when I go out to eat, their prep time may pinch your schedule if you are in a hurry. - Service, while friendly, was not particularly attentive. That may have been my own fault in sitting toward the back of the seating area, behind a partition wall out of sight of the kitchen & counter at the front of the house. Easy to forget customers back there, although about half of the customers were back there with me. - After the meal I waited long enough sans service that I eventually went to the front counter without a check to pay. I dunno, maybe that is the way I was supposed to do it. Felt awkward nonetheless, although the waiter remained friendly and courteous throughout the process of ringing me up and checking me out. - Four TV's showing four different World Cup soccer games lining one wall. Thank goodness, only one game had the volume turned up. I suspect the waiter, like the other male patrons, was watching one or other of the games. So I will cut him some slack on the attentiveness issue. read more

We have gotten food here many times and loved it. Today we got the lamb Kebab plate medium rare which was a big disappointment. The meat was tough and full of gristle. I hope this does not occur in the future as we would like to continue to get food here. read more

Despite the great reviews, I would say the food here is mediocre. The flavor of the chicken and lamb didn't stand out to me as anything out of the ordinary. I did like the soft pita and colorful humus with olive oil. I also enjoyed the well cooked but still crunchy kabob veggies. I thought it was odd that they had only non-alcoholic beer. Location wise, the restaurant is in what looks like a college town with lots of trendy options and I'd view this as positive. In terms of the inside of the location, it was clean and decorated appropriately for the food genre. The way the restaurant is arranged, it's a little awkward to order because you're standing in the aisle which accessed the rest of the restaurant. read more

We stopped here because of the "Himalayan" and "Nepalese" in the restaurant description. We didn't actually find any dishes we would recognize from these regions on the menu, but we were seriously impressed with the Mediterranean food we did have. We tried their babaganoush, and were surprised to find it came with a hearty, whole wheat flat bread. Very tasty! The lamb Kebab was pretty close to out of this world, and came with unexpected sides of a savory pilaf, more of the hearty flatbread, and some super tasty hummus. The kibbeh appetizer was divine, if small, and the Momo (which may have been the Himalayan/Nepalese selection, just not one we recognized) was awesome, provided one loves the flavor of cumin. All in all, a good experience that we are likely to repeat. read more

This is a hidden gem around the UNM area. The food is tasty and reasonable priced. I had an opportunity to talk with the business owner, he is friendly, funny, and very open to feedback. This cute little Mediterranean cafe is absolutely wonderful. I've been a few times and it never fails to feel authentic and it's always delicious. I got the vegetarian platter, and it comes with hummus, a salad, falafel that's to die for, dulmas, a lettuce/salad mix, and another dipping paste that has pomegranate. It is incredible. My favourite part is definitely the falafel and dulma. The falafel is so tastey and well made and the dulmas are extremely fresh tasting. It's a lot of food too for a fair price. I eat out A LOT and have been traveling regularly for the past few months, and this rates among the top for me in recent memory. I came here based on the 33 reviews/5 star rating. It exceeded my expectations The owners from Nepal were very welcoming and friendly right off the bat, and were passionate and excited about their food and me trying it. They told me everything is made fresh in house and it sure tasted like it. I got the chicken shawarma wrap, and didn't pay attention to what it came with so was surprised to also get a delicious homemade tasting lentil soup seasoned just right, crispy fried pita bits that were surprisingly good and not hard, and fresh cut fries cooked in peanut oil. All this for a little over $8! Excellent presentation--the kind you'd expect at a fancier restaurant. I said I liked garlic sauce so he gave me extra. The shawarma was a very manageable size, and more importantly, well balanced and proportioned ingredients with flavorful and tender chicken. I ended my fantastic meal with a cardamom Turkish style coffee, which I thought was just right in cardamom flavor. Bonus: good wifi and when I was done, they were very cool and welcoming with me staying longer to do some computer work. I wouldn't have done that though if it was really busy, but it was a slow Sunday evening. The interior is modern, clean, and welcoming. They nailed it in every area--service, food quality and portion size, interior, and value. I'm planning to come back to try their kebabs and Nepal style dumplings. If I lived in the area, this would probably be one of my go-to spots! Very highly recommended! read more

Stopped here for dinner on a one night layover in Albuquerque. Excellent chicken shawarma and lentil soup. Pistachio baklava was also good, as were the local beers on tap. Great service. I would definitely come back if I was in the area again. read more

If you have eaten here more than once you may find that the staff is kind of a family experience...they all seem to work well together and treat you like family. The food is always spot on, and i have not had any complaints at all with any of it. Today i decided to try ordering out from Mazaya using GrubHub, and you need to know that the food arrived hot, and the presentation was as good as sitting in the restaurant. I have ordered delivery from some other places, and found food put into containers too large or small for the order and basically a mish-mosh, but Mazaya delivered on quality and presentation. I even had substitutes in the notes and they took care of me as if i was sitting right there. Kudos once again to the Staff at Mazaya... see you for dinner soon! read more

Mazaya is a regular lunch spot for me and my coworkers. I looove their lentil soup and their vegetarian platter is great. We love that the hummus is plated to look like a zia symbol and the baba ghanoush is smokey. I also get the shawerma platter that has great flavor. Having a party of six, I would expect the server to ask how to split the check before giving it. That delayed things even more at the end. To correct this mistake, he offered a drink on the house. This dish was visually stunning. However, it also did not meet the expectations set by the visuals. The vegetables and balsamic sauce were the heroes, while the duck breast was small and a third was just fat. Considering the prices of this place, we expected the visuals to match the flavors, but they were unfortunately not the same.

I was in new mexico to visit my cousin and she took me to Mazaya cafe for lunch. I was really surprise when i tasted there food. We ordered chicken momo and falafal and ofcouse tge himalayan tea. The chicken momo was so tasty and juicy and the spices was just right. Also the staff were very polite and welcoming. The manager also took his time to ask us about the food and service, not many restaurants do that. Before getting back to Nj i went there couple of time but everytime it was same great service nad food. I am surprise how could they hav some bad reviews. Lamb kebab hit the spot and vegetarian platter the best choice for the people who is vegetarian. Momo is the best as the appetizer which was made from the spices of Nepal. I had a wonderful experience at Mazaya cafe,, thanks to the friendly staff and the immaculate cleanliness of the establishment. I tried their vegetarian platter, which was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. As a vegan, I appreciated the option to substitute the regular pita for a wheat pita. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal, and I hope they consider introducing rice with no butter and vegan plant-based meat options in the future! read more

Best lamb in town! I love this place! The kabob platter is a generous portion. It comes with salad, dolmas, hummus, rice and roasted veggies. Their lentil soup is amazing. But the highlight was the Moroccan mint tea, served traditionally in glasses and poured from high up. I haven't had tea that good in awhile (and yes I go to the Teahouse).
