Visited my local McAlister's Deli located at 8840 N Michigan Rd and this had to be one of my worst experiences ever with them. Their world famous ice tea was terrible, not even half sweet and I gave it back and asked for lemonade. It seemed the entire staff was overwhelmed though there wasn't that many customers inside. While waiting on my order a Grub Hub guy came in to get a pickup only to find himself waiting along side us for his order which took well over 15 mins. We left him still waiting. There was a lady who was getting a refund on her meal which had the manager tied up for some time and it was not a smooth running store for my visit. We checked out orders which were all there but lacking was butter and sour cream for the baked potato. Seems that would come with it but maybe I'm wrong. I know in the past I've never had to ask for it and once home, utensils, napkins, butter and sour cream was all there. I noticed a huge puddle of ice tea on the counter in front of the container on the right side of the work area that needed attention but it was there the entire time for this stop. Knowing anyone can have an off day/night is understandable but all the years I've gone to this store in particular, and the first time since early summer last year, I'll never go back again. I found this restaurant close to the hotel I was staying in. It's freeway close. I ordered the Reuben sandwich with potato salad. The service is friendly and quick. The Reuben had lots of flavor and the potato salad was great. The restaurant is clean and open. There is outside sitting. read more

One of my fave fast casual spots that never disappoints. Call ahead if you're taking the food to go. They are pretty quick so it only takes 10-15 min for the food to be ready. The lemonade is thee bomb.com. Yes, that good. If you like Arnold Palmers, then mix the lemonade with the sweet tea. Last time I went I got a strawberry lemonade with extra strawberry. Talk about delicious. The cookies are HUGE. Chocolate chip is my fave. I usually get the grilled chicken spud. It's a HUGE potato (more like 2 potatoes put together) topped with grilled chicken, cheese, green onions and tomatoes. The pick 2 is good too. I have not tried very much at McAlister's because I can't pull myself away from their Pepper Jack Turkey with honey mustard. I've never liked honey mustard for the record. Honestly, I feel like they bullied me into loving it by forgetting to leave it off my sandwhich per my requests, the first few times I ordered it. Now I can't have it without it. I'm not sure if that will translate in real life (as in, if I were home making a turkey sandwhich, I doubt that the honey mustard would work for me). It doesn't matter though. I LOVE this sandwhich. The food was extremely disappointing. I ordered the half Savannah chopped salad and the veggie chili with steamed broccoli. The Savannah chopped salad was mostly made from low-quality, old iceberg lettuce and only had a few pieces of spinach. There was very little gorgonzola cheese and only a few bits of almonds and cranberries. I had to bring my own dressing to ensure this didn't jump way up on the calorie scale. There were only a few small pieces of grey chicken that were also underwhelming. The salad looks nothing like the advertisement photo for it. The veggie chili was decent, but the sodium level is off the charts. This was an expensive lunch and not one I would ever pay for again. McAllister's is one of my favorite places to go out to eat but I won't go back to this location. It was filthy with trash all over the floor, dirty tables and the staff was less than helpful. I'm not real sure why they gave us a number when ordering when we had to go up and tell them that our food was ready after it sat on the counter for some time. It's not like they didn't know it was ready, One of the workers even went as far as to move it out of the window to put it on the counter but we had to ask for it. I got soup which was room temp when we got it. My husband got a sandwich and Mac and cheese. The sandwich didn't have the sauce on it and the Mac and cheese was cold. We had dinner there two nights ago and the food was delicious; I had a California turkey reuben & a white macadamia nut cookie ($7.29), and my husband had a southwest chicken griller ($6.99) & a cup of fire-roasted vegetable soup ($1.99). I went to McAlisters because of a gift card someone gave me, but I usually don't go because most of them are out of my way. This recent visit, I was convinced of why I should go more often. So here are my top 3 reasons of why I will be returning: 1.) The Service - when I approached the counter, about 3 people wanted to help me with my order. They were all super friendly and ready to help. I was not sure what I wanted to order (the menu is a little much) however, the employees were patient and dying to help! 2.) Time - I kid you not, I ordered my food and not even 2 minutes after we sat down our food was ready. With a sit down kind of place like this, it normally takes a good 10 minutes before the order is ready. 3.) Cleanliness & space - This store was very clean and there was a lot of space to sit and eat. This is important to me because I had my little one with me with her stroller, baby bag, and my purse... I have ordered from this place numerous times. Today I experienced horrible customer service. I will NEVER order again from the Merrillville location. I usually order deliveries on DoorDash. I wanted the points so I ordered on the app. I never received my order, which is not Mccallister's issue. The Dasher either took the food or delivered it somewhere else. I called and told Mccallister, they told me they couldn't do anything about that. I was disappointed so she said she can place another order or refund it, I took the refund. Unfortunately it takes 5-7 business days to get refunded. I called DoorDash to complain about the Dasher who didn't deliver my order BUT indicated that they did. I wanted DoorDash to found out what happened and let the Dasher know that they are aware of the situation. DoorDash offered to pay for my food. I told DoorDash no thank you because Mccallister is giving me a refund. The DoorDash representative insisted on paying for my order. I agreed, they put me on hold and called Mccallister then told me I should get my food by 3pm. I originally orderly my food about an hour earlier so at this point the food would be delivered 2 hours later. Well I never got my food. I called Mccallister back and they told me my food order was canceled. The new Dasher texted me telling me my order was canceled and Mccallister wouldn't give them my food. I called DoorDash back, they told me order was confirmed. I called Mccallister back, they said my order was canceled by me and they couldn't do anything about it. I explained to them that it was a different order, same response, they couldn't do anything about it. I called DoorDash again and they call Mccallister again while I was on the phone. DoorDash explained everything but Mccallister won't make another order. I guess they think I was trying to get over when DoorDash was paying for my food not Mccallister. I ordered there numerous times and never tried to get over. Maybe they had people I the past getting over but this wasn't the case. ESPECIALLY since DoorDash was going to pay for it. Wow, cashiers need a lot of work. The manager didn't really seem to help things either. She was obviously overwhelmed but not an excuse to speak rudely to customers or employees. She didn't speak to me but I witnessed several poor comments to other people. She said several times that she's the only manager working right now. With that being said, the food was actually really good. I had The Italian with chips and a cup of Southwest Chili. The Sweet tea is also very good. Total came to about $15. The food was ok. Nothing impressive. The cashier was minimally personable. She didn't want to be there and you could tell. Later when I need a to go container no one was around (they had gotten busy) so I had to walk back up to the counter to ask. A different cashier was helping people while the one that had "assisted" me earlier was just leaning on the counter next to her- while her coworkers bustled around to take care of the line. If that wasn't bad enough she purposefully avoided my eye contact as I tried to get her attention. The cashier next to her, who was busy helping customers, was the one to stop what she was doing to get the container. And did so without the slightest hint of being put out. No real incentive for me to return to any McAlister's and this was my first time ever trying them. read more

This is the first time at this location. It was smaller, but they kept the line going quickly. It was right at dinner time so I thought we'd be in line forever. I always get my favorite orange cranberry club and a half and half iced tea. My sandwich was good and they kept our tea full! One more star on our card and we get a free tea. The efficiency and friendliness of the staff here is above and beyond. We dined in Sunday after service and it was packed. Although the line was long, we got to the register quickly and our food was served fast and fresh. Staff walks around to check on people, remove empty plates, and get refills for customers. I was very impressed. My friends and I stayed for three hours to talk and catch up, and they still checked on us! Even being a big supporter of locally-owned, non-chain restaurants, I have to give McAlister's props where props are due. I work around the corner from this one, and they have never disappointed. Aside from the wonderful packaging they have making carry-out VERY convenient, they are sure to wrap soups and hot sides with plastic wrap to doubly ensure no leakage. The staff is always friendly, our orders are always correct down to the smallest detail, and a couple of times I've been given free tea or sweets. Side note...a cute cashier there flattered me one day last summer. He made my day. Oh, I'm leaving out the best part: the food is great. I've tried 7 or 8 different things from the menu, and have yet to find something I don't like. Great lunch spot. read more

Super awesome Lady that helped us was extremely nice. Food was great flavor and service was great too. I like the order and sit down type places it seems like a restaurant but without the servers. Seems like it makes for a more relaxed meal if you want a refil you just take your cup to the counter. They also have people coming around to ask. And they don't expect a tip either. They just enjoy serving you and making you happy. Which in reality I think makes for better service to everyone. The restaurant is very nice and clean inside and out. Just ate here for lunch. Not pleased with the outcome of my order. I ordered the sweet chipotle chicken sandwich. It was not hot nor did it have the sweet chipotle peach sauce. Hands down for me, their sweet tea is the best product they sell. However, I don't want to shortchange some of their other items. The baked spuds are huge with a multitude of topping choices. They have a selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches as well. We use them in the office quite often for catering, especially the potato bar, and they have been very dependable. read more

Recently decided to give McAlisters another try...Meh! I got their full Muffeleta sandwich. It is a a traditional size Muffaleta (about 10" around, divided into quarters.) This was just ok..lots of meat (what no mortadella?) The bread was dry and the tapenade was sour...like I said...Meh! Also got a grilled chicken baked potato. The potato and all the toppings were good. The issue I had is that like any red blooded american I like my potato MY way so I proceeded to order extra green onions and sour cream. The potato did have extra green onions as requested, but when I got home I discovered that there was NO SOUR CREAM...WTF?!?! No sour cream wit your baked potato...downright communist! Also, when leaving, i decided to get some pickles and peppers to go as well and was disgusted with the state of the condiments bar (peppers/pickles/pepperoncinis). I went to get some of the whole pepperoncinis and it appeared that there were rotting peppers in the bottom of the container...thanks, i'll pass! McAllister's is usually choice for my co-workers and I for ordering lunch. My co-worker returned with the food and my order was incorrect. I placed a phone call to McAllister's to make them aware that my order was incorrect and the employee, Kyree, that answered the phone- responded to my statement with an "ok??" No apology, no remorse, he actually stated, "I don't know what you want me to do?!" Definitely not the reaction you would receive at Chick-fil-A or Starbucks when your order is incorrect. Don't bother asking to speak to a manager as they're "too busy" to take a call for a complaint. Worst customer service ever! I will not be returning to this location. read more

It took a few phone calls but we were able to agree that the error was on the part of the store and I was able to eat my lunch before I really got hangry.
