Food is good, when made as ordered...but unfortunately customer service as declined greatly. Managers no longer round dining area, help refill drinks, pass food or greet guests. Last two visits manager was either sitting in dining room allowing staff to cuss in area and then just walk out. The next visit manager gave a disgusting look at the customer when it was the cashier that screwed up the order. But manager again did nothing just went back and again ignored situations. Reading my old review makes me laugh a little bit... I've now been to McAlister's QUITE a bit more, and have tried the famous baked potatoes. Now that is all I order when I'm there. Granted, I'm on a bit of a baked potato kick (why don't we eat baked potatoes for every meal, every day of the week?!), but I think most people would agree that their potatoes are pretty delicious. The service seems to have dropped in caliber over the last few months. I went to this location with some out-of-town guests; there were three of us on the ticket. It took the cashier a good 20 minutes to get the order down, and when she did, it was still incorrect. We eventually just gave up and ate what we were given; she was nice, just really unprepared to be working in that position. They also used to have people circling the restaurant offering refills. There are still people who do, but the last three times I've been there, I've had to go up to the counter to get a refill. It's not all that bad--I'm willing to walk up for a refill--but it's a little annoying that I see various waitstaff circling around, but not offering refills. ...Great, I just ate dinner and now I want another baked potato. I had high hope for this place because of the menu variety and what I have heard about everyone else recommending me to try it. I had the French dip and it was nothing short of disappointing. My sandwich was made with cheddar cheese (really, French dip sandwich with cheddar?) and the au jus was 1) taste like something that came out of a packet mixed with water and 2) COLD!!! Very disappointed. However, my sides, which was the pasta salad and the chicken dumpling soup was decent. I might just had a bad sandwich, but who knows. Service was great. Everyone was friendly and really willing to help (except maybe he register lady who took my order. I think she must be a needing a break really soon at that point because she was nothing short of cranky). Overall, I guess I will give this a try and may be try another sandwich and soup. I stopped by on the recommendation of a friend while on a business trip in Lafayette. I wish I could recommend it myself, but the food was just mediocre and the service was absolutely horrible. The girl behind the counter made no effort to make me feel welcome... never returned my greeting, cut my order off two seconds in because I hadn't given her my name (sorry, wasn't aware of the protocol), and told me to wait over at the bench for my order. Keep in mind it was not very busy, surprisingly as it was 12:30, so there was no need to rush me through like a backed-up McDonalds drive-thru. I understand it's a deli so I'm not looking for white glove service, but I dunno... maybe a smile? Or... have you been here before? It only takes seconds to make someone feel welcome. I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Salad, which was nothing special. Could have been more chicken in the salad, and the fat-free peach dressing that had enticed me was this gelatinous bland mess. Not recommended. I'm always looking for great food finds when on the road, but this one just didn't make the mark. Even more disappointing is that they have free wifi, still hard to find sometimes in central Indiana. Not sure I understand how some people leave reviews about a restaurant on just one visit and one type of food they ordered that they happened to not like and be so negative about the whole restaurant... Just because one had a not so good meal, doesn't mean the entire restaurant makes every available item on the menu as bad as that one particular unfavorable meal. Get over yourselves, really. On to my own review: Every single time I have visited this place, I have enjoyed the various sandwiches and especially their potato salad. So today was the worst experience I have had at at McAlisters. As I waited inline to order I observed the following, the kitchen staff was struggling to get orders correct and communicate to the front what they were out of. I overheard they were out of potatoes (it was just 12 oclock.) When I finally made it up to order I asked the girl ringing me up if they were really out of potatoes , she had to go ask as the front person setting up the plate choose not communicate what the kitchen had told them to the 2 girls No potatoes. So the folks who had already ordered theirs were left unaware of this. So I order something else ,,fine and whatever. Then my daughters order bread bowl with broccoli cheddar soup comes to the table with no bread bowl. When I asked the guy had no idea what to do. I showed my receipt and he was like oh I will get it. He come s back and says the bread bowls are frozen still and was about to walk away when I said I paid for a bread bowl. He says he will go ask. He comes back with a bread that is used for the hoagie sandwiches. Fine i guess. I really can't believe the shift manager did not come and talk to us about this screw up. Went to McAlister's in Lafayette IN at about lunch time and the place was packed. The wait was not bad but the food I ordered was, lets face it average. I ordered the Muffuletta at the Lafayette restaurant and it was no where near New Orleans style of taste. I have had a real Muffuletta at Central Grocery in New Orleans and this one in Lafayette was dry, had very little olive salad and limited ham and cheese. The Sweet Tea they are so proud of is no better than what I make at home, actually not as good. Although the food is better than most fast food joints is really doesn't live up to it billing. I will say that I have been to one of McCalister's Delis in the greater Indianapolis area and the fare was better there. Since I will probably not be back in Lafayette for another 10 years I will not seek out this restaurant when I am in Lafayette. read more

My family and I had a delicious dinner on Monday night and I accidentally left my purse in the booth. The next morning I realized my purse was missing, I quickly began checking every possible place where I could have put it and of course fearing the worst (the wasted of time replacing everything). I called just before McAlister's Deli opened (10:15am), after giving a brief description of my purse, the manager told me they had it. Everything was in it including the cash! I am always clueless of where to eat in the Lafayette area. Friend of mine reccomended this place. At first I though we were going to a smelly deli to eat cold sandwiches but I was very wrong. Very comfortable atmosphere, not cold and white like I thought ha. They have a great selection of sandwiches, warm ones, soup and spuds. I have actually been there a few times before this check in. Each time I get a different sandwich and soup and I have never been let down! Update: no longer a newbie. I freaking LOVE this place. Their Harvest Chicken salad sandwich rocks, the Savannah salad is spectacular, but the potatoes are just 'eh. I've got the Black Forest & Chili potato & they just weren't that good & didn't have enough toppings to spread out for the whole potato (about half). I've had other sandwiches--Ruben, New Yorker, California Reuben & Veggie Wrap, & they're all exceptionally good. I think they do sandwiches & salads really well. But! I will say they're just too pricey. It's just over $10 usually for half a sandwich (&, other than Muffeletta, think regular slices of bread but half) & small salad. Don't get me wrong, it's enough food for a single meal but when I pay $10 I'd like there to be enough for leftovers. Ultimately, while good food, I can stop at nearby Camille's for equally (more) healthy food & slightly less. And if course Subway or JJ's subs are going to be cheaper. The amount left in my saliva burned all the way down to my stomach. Was like drinking a bottle of phenol (think turpentine + floor wax + embalming fluid + mop water). The manager "kindly" offered a free coupon for another meal. As if... Folks, they use artificial smoke in their food, as do many fake food places. Guess somebody got the recipe wrong. 1 teaspoon, NOT 1 gallon. (That college student worker must have failed math!) Google "artificial smoke flavor". It's used everywhere. I know because this experience made me super-sensitive to it. Now I cannot STAND grilled foods or barbeque and cannot even be in the room with an open bottle of BBQ sauce. Even toast makes me wretch! For the past four times I've gotten food to go from here in the past six months, the staff has forgotten one of my orders. It's one thing if they've forgotten it once but this is ridiculous. I keep telling my co-workers to stop picking up food from here because we end up wasting half of our lunch break waiting in line even though the staff said it'll be ready in 30 minutes and then one of us has to drive all the way back there again to pick up the rest of the orders they forgot to include in the bag. I had the worst experience I have ever had at a McAlister's ever... not only did I wait over 30 minutes while being sick and with my nine year old for my to go order but it sat on the counter for over 20 minutes and no one called my name or even asked what name I was waiting on. The girl who finally decided to ask my name proceeded to tell me "oh your order is right here" when I asked why my name wasn't called she said "oh I did you just didn't hear me". When I proceeded to tell her it had been sitting there for 20 minutes she replies with " actually it hasn't been 20 minutes but whatever"... I'm not sure what kind of training is involved with your employees but maybe some customer service training in how to talk to customers should be taught. The girl at the register was pleasant and patient with my nine year old when she wanted to order her own food. The manager was apologetic for her rude employee working the food window and said she would address it but I am doubtful about that. I cannot say if I will ever return... this experience has soured my once good picture of McAlister's. Very disappointed... Food was just ok... hardly any turkey on my turkey melt and it was cold by the time I got it... the only good thing about my experience was the tea. Other than that I'm not enthused.. I was just in here tonight and I come in very often, but I wanted to shout out to the crew working tonight. Talk about the term dream team. The place was crazy busy, but I heard no complaints and saw no tired of waiting faced people. The food was made quickly excellent job kitchen, everyone was working hard and smiling! I knew restaurants can feel squeezed at times due to rush hour etc... But tonight, it was literally a fully tension/stress free zone, happy place to be. So smoothly run.
