I found out after the fact that McChord Field has two commissaries. Big base! Their 'Main Commissary" is further south on the base. This one though, is quite large and has about anything you could want. Bakery, deli, pet, H&B, meats, frozen items, good size produce section with a small organic area. Seriously, the store pretty much has you covered. The staff we encountered were all very friendly. The store is clean and well laid out. They serve Boars Head deli items which are pricy, but in line with the area prices and they have a small 'grab 'n go' section of premade sandwiches. The bakery has birthday cakes and such. I'm not sure you save a lot of money by shopping at the Commissary as I only picked up a few items and am not best qualified to determine that, but it sure is convenient. Plenty of parking. Self checkout with your own bags, or be prepared to tip the helper who bags and takes your items to your vehicle. They are unpaid by Deca (or so I am told by a relative who did this for a while after retiring) and tips is how they make their living. Mcchord doesn't have 2 commissary. There is one on Mcchord and the other one on Ft Lewis. They made it so that you can drive from one to the other on the base without having to go on the Freeway. Around Christmas time McChord carries a lot of German food products. We like shopping at McChord so much more. read more

I spent a whole hour trying to call anyone at this comissary & Noone answered. We tried numerous times calling with Noone to reply. & it was a emergency. To ask if anyone found my husband's phone. Drove all the way back from Lakewood to this comissary that Noone handed in a phone What a waste of our time Really upset!!! read more

Great, smaller commissary. No need to go to the larger commissary on Ft. Lewis as this store has everything we need and the staff are super friendly and helpful. read more

Nice. I was surprised they were opened on a Sunday which is good because everything else appeared to be closed.

The ladies at self check out we're so rude. I can not believe how rude they are when they work on a military base with soldiers there everyday to buy the food. I hope that they treat them better Ina. Regular basis then how they treated us. read more

Great selection and great deals. Free Folger's coffee in the morning. Expanded self-service no-limit check-out stations. "Club Warehouse" exists behind their dairy section where you can get discounts by buying in bulk. Some prices are still steeper than off base stores. Shop smartly. Also, join the AFCOMS discount program for coupons and shopping information. And finally, please/please/please avoid this place on or immediately after military paydays (The 1st and the 15th). read more

I've been shopping at the McChord Commissary for over two years. The hours are convenient and they carry a good variety of grocery items. The produce selection carries a variety of items including organic, and the prices are good. There is a seafood counter with a nice variety of fresh seafood items. This Commissary also has a bakery which offers a nice variety of fresh baked goods including cakes and pies. The deli is a good place to grab something quick for lunch or dinner. There is an aisle of bulk/club pack items ranging from snacks and other grocery items to cleaning products and personal care products. One area I always check out is the warehouse which is where the beverages are at as well as the area for markdowns. Items that are damaged or discontinued are marked down and placed in this area for sale. Sometimes you can get a really good deal! One of the things I like about this store is that they offer self-checkout. I prefer to do it myself, mainly because I want to bag everything myself. The regular checkout lanes have baggers who are contracted by the Commissary and work only for tips. They'll bag all of your items and even take them out to your car for you, and you tip them what you feel is an appropriate amount. If you don't want to have your groceries bagged but don't want to use self-checkout, you can still go through a regular lane and request to bag everything yourself. I would suggest self-checkout instead, though, because the baggers tend to be offended if you decline their services in a regular checkout lane. This Commissary tends to be a busy one and the parking lot is always full, so I try to go earlier in the day. Like all Commissaries, they have a 100% ID card check. So if you're not an authorized patron, don't expect to be able to shop here. A valid military ID card is required for all purchases. read more

Husband and I went here yesterday afternoon for a few things to cook dinner at a buddy's place and ended up spending $98. That's half our regular grocery bill--for one night! The problem with the commissary is that they don't offer a store brand and their selection as far as sizes isn't so good. For example, we had to buy a large bottle of vegetable oil when we only needed a little. And a huge thing of salt when we just needed a few teaspoons. The only way you really save a lot of $$ with the commissary is if you normally buy name brands, cause that's all they carry. Unfortunately, their discounted name brands are still more expensive than any store brand I've ever shopped. I suppose I could see the commissary saving a lot of money for larger families because of its bulk options, but for a quick grocery run, we would have been better off with another store. I have to say they had a great selection of products overall, and I was really impressed by the produce and meat selections and prices. In a perfect world, I'd buy my produce at the commissary and everything else store brand at the local grocery store. read more

Your standard military commissary. On base, good hours, cheap prices. Military prices for groceries are usually around 5-10% cheaper than your standard supermarket prices. Even better if you're a coupon clipper. a pound of ground beef will be around $2-3. At least .50 cheaper than a bargain grocery retailer like Winco or Walmart. read more

first and foremost let me start off with the fact I have TBI (google it). that being said let me tell you what happened. also, the one star is for the person that I am speaking about in the story to come, with that I say this I love the commissary itself I go there a lot. the commissary gets a solid 4 only because the prices can get price gougey. so here I was confused because you know I have brain drama which affects my mind and understanding of things. things that used to be simple to do now take me a minute or two to put 2 and 2 together. online at the usajobs I was looking for a job because I am on a fixed income and need a part-time job or full-time whatever, anyhow it says they were hiring in the area of the bases here in Washington state but I chose McChord and lewis as a backup. also, a McChord they it said they are looking for someone to this and that. in my confusion, I was wondering if one had to do with the other and so I proceeded to not fill out that app and instead filled out the one on usajobs cuz you know veteran. I asked to speak with a person in charge and they were all busy in some pow wow of big wigs so she was busy, which I was cool with and I see them all doing their boss thing. so, I was lead to the front desk and boyyyyyyy was I in for it. I'm not good with questions, to begin with so I proceeded to ask her to try to ask her about the 2 jobs and if they had anything to do with each other and before I go any further, I tend to cut folks off because if I have a question I have to ask it then and there to which I did and I apologized for all while I was nervous anxious and stuttering....... her response "wellllll if you would have let me finish, I would have told you one is federal and the other has nothing to do with us nothing at all they are contracted blah f n blah blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" I was angry internally only because I was confused as to why I was being chastised and or being scolded for asking questions. then she proceeds to speak to me like if i dropped a deuce on her desk, "we are not hiring where does it say we are hiring i should know i do the hiring we and i can tell you we are not hiring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (at this point she has gone to her desk and pulled up the job she is opening it and proceeds to in a raised voice tell me that "well we are not hiring this is a just in case job opening" "but it is not here we are not hiring") arguing with me instead of simply answering my question, she was acting like she was the boss and she is in charge of the whole kit and caboodle. I was devasted and I was soured in mood, I went in all smiles someone with shell shock like me usually isn't all smiles but here I was in rare form smiling and willing to ask questions going outside my zone and I get verbally assaulted by some sour rude /above her pay grade acting /in deep need of customer service training / acting like those spouses that wear their spouses rank on there attitude/ power-hungry human. then I brought up "I am currently going to school and" was interrupted by the lady losing her mind over the question like if I worked there and asked for the time off to you know get a degree and move up something that obviously she never did and is bitter about so f anyone else trying to get an education sorry I digress... "noooo, we do not give anyone any leisure time off" "no we do change any times for anybody for whatever reason, not in this business!!!" I was like wtf is this the service like is the commissary going to war and we need all hands on deck like the lady it is not that serious, are you upset that you can't call the police on me "Karen"?! we are not in the pacific or even Afghanistan i am sure I can handle your store hours or what have you. "Imagine if everyone wanted time off if they wanted to go have a leisure time with their kid if they can't come in because they want to _______?" I'm like still shaking my head and was even trying to keep a smile, then she brought up about a prospective employee declining the job because she was worried about parking. I know what was that about, anyhow she yelled at me as if I did something wrong and I was still calm, unlike her sourpuss self. so, in the end, I had two good ol'boys in the hallway ready to pounce on me at least that is what I got when I thanked her about-faced and went on my way, they were mad dogging me and I was like I wish a motherfcker would!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she made sure she made it known she doesn't want me there threatened the moment I mentioned I was a veteran. do not know why but again hours are erratic which is understandable but how you wanna chew me out for being in school and or simply asking a question. she was totally off pudding steer clear..... read more

I've been shopping here for years. Pretty standard commissary. Reasonably well kept store. Only problem I've run into was recent. Because of a computer problem (the register) I was double billed. I was reassured that wouldn't happen, but it did. Trying to get a refund (seems like it should be easy) is taking awhile. It's been almost 2 weeks and I'm still waiting. Now I've been told it could take a month. I think I'll use cash next time. read more
