My husband and I have been thinking of buying a home in McCloud and visit every couple months to get a feel of the town and the people in the town. This past weekend we visited McCloud for the Herritage Days celebration (8/18/12) and attempted to enter the hotel to get a brochure or ask about staying there on our next visit. As my father climbed the steps and approached the front door, which was open, a woman met him at the door and said, "We're only serving breakfast to our guests", then (literally) shut the door in his face. As we were walking around the street a bit later in the morning checking out the vendors, I saw the same lady from the hotel put a note up on the door that read something to the effect of the hotel only being open to guests, no public restroom. This isn't horrible in itself, but after she put the note up I heard her talking with someone outside the hotel. She was talking badly about people and complaining that people were trying to come in, but when she saw me and recognized me as being with my father earlier in the morning, she abrubtly quit her complaining. This experience alone will prevent me from ever staying at this hotel, I will also be sure to tell anyone I know who is visiting McCloud that the people running/working at the McCloud Hotel are rude. In all our visits to McCloud, this is the worste treatment we've ever recieved, in fact it's the only rude treatment we've recieved, everyone else has been very gracious, helpful & grateful for our business. They should really rethink the sign that reads, "Historic Hospitality". read more

I'm only rating the Restaurant. The wait staff is very helpful, polite and freindly. We were there for Valentines dinner. Small dinning room, so you need to make reservations. I had the special for that evening, prime rib and it was delicious. The crab cake appetizer is outstanding. A mixture of crab and scallops with a secret sauce, really to die for. Portions were a nice size, you do not leave hungry. The only reason I'm giving the a 4 star rating is because of the their limited weekly menu which is only 4 entrees. It would be nice if they could add a nice steak on the menu. They have a good wine list. The owner visits the tables and is a great sport, she makes you feel like your at home. Overall one of the nicest places to eat in the tr-city area (Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta and McCloud). It is worth the time to drive out to McCloud and enjoy this gem in McCloud. read more

Though the wooden flooring creaked and interior was old fashioned, as the hotel was established a hundred years ago, all the employees were very kind and we felt cozy and very satisfied with the hospitality and services. The foods served at the restaurant were all excellent and vegan menu made my vegetarian daughter satisfied. Dog friendly!! Very nice place for a family to stay with a dog. read more

When you are not expecting to find gourmet food in a little town you are even more impressed! Dinner was romantic and the waitress was more than happy, she was helpful. Had the BEST tomato soup ever! The chicken pot pie was hearty and the puff pastry was crisp and hot! The roast beef dinner had a surprise cranberry sauce on the side that was unusual and delicious. Breakfast was more than one could expect and the coffee cake was fresh and moist. Lovely time and our room was nice and quaint. Just like we want an old inn to feel like....cozy and quiet. We really enjoyed our stay at the McCloud Hotel. The interior feels historic, not dated, and the relaxed, yet classy, atmosphere feels like you have gone back to a simpler time. It's true that there are no televisions in the rooms or phones, but that's the way we like to vacation. The breakfasts are fantastic and they accommodated our vegetarian needs without a problem. The serving staff in the morning were great! As others have mentioned, the gardens are lovely. The rates were quite reasonable (we got the standard room), and the beds were comfortable. We will stay here the next time we are in the area again! Book early! We booked in March for a room in July and they were almost out! read more

Heading back home from Seattle, we choose to bypass Medford or Ashland usually our half way stopping point and try the McCloud Hotel. We found it online, and it was just what we had hoped for. It is nice to have expectations exceeded. We prefer historical properties, and this one is a gem. The generous public rooms, lobby with fireplace, games and comfortable seating to mingle. The porches also offer seating. The restaurant - Yum! We chose the gazebo patio dining area, lushly landscaped. The filet and chicken pot pie, well executed with simply ingredients done as we requested. The tab was so reasonable and our server was great. There is also an indoor dining room, we had breakfast there. Our room was really large. Often historical properties means charming but teeny, not at the McCloud Hotel. Yippee, a comfy king sized bed in our room. We had a first floor room, my wife has limited mobility. I was glad the hotel has wifi, spoiled by high speed, we just checked email and then enjoyed the evening. After traveling a couple of thousand miles on this trip.......expect that connectivity in rural areas if often absent, so checking email was plenty for us. We didn't try the lobby wifi. The grandeur of Mount Shasta is not to be missed, mountain biking and golf. We should have planned for a longer stay. McCloud formerly a company lumber town, so the town has repurposed the other charming historical buildings. The new owners are very attentive, and McCloud Hotel could easily be part of a destination event, girls weekend, or wedding weekend? The back garden and gazebo are intimate settings. Since many things in McCloud are called McCloud, a B &B, and another hotel. We were delighted with the choice of the McCloud Hotel. Thank you. read more

The New Owners are doing a Fantastic Job making the Hotel better than it ever was. I have not been able to go eat again , But friends and family have and I've only heard Rave Reviews. These are very good people that are not only doing an excellent job with the Hotel, But are a wonderful addition to this small community. We are lucky to have them here. A couple Days at the Hotel would make a perfect gift. Sitting by the fireplace , sipping a nice glass of wine or coffee, watching it snow. What could be better?? read more

The McCloud Hotel is an amazing property. Lovingly restored by Cindy and Gary, the Innkeepers, everything about it perfectly balances preserving the historical building and features with providing luxury to its guests. From the stunning period exterior of the hotel, to the gardens delivering privacy and peace, to the unique reception area with original wooden beams and features, to the ample bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, the hotel has that unique ability to slow your pulse and raise your humor. The staff are both professional and friendly, always ready to help make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. When we asked about hiking in the Mt. Shasta area, a couple of the staff got together and provided us with 3 great alternatives. (We settled on Black Butte, a 5.5 mile hike with stunning views of Mt. Shasta.) The restaurant deserves a special mention. The quality of the food equals any you'd hope to find in a major city. As a vegan, I was particularly delighted to see a vegan appetizer on the menu and a daily vegan special main dish. Both were delicious! The wine menu was tastefully put together, providing a mixture of local, national and international wines. If this restaurant was located in the Bay Area, we'd be regulars. This is my second stay at the McCloud Hotel and each time the visit has been fantastic. The local area is a hiker's paradise, and the fly-fishing on both the McCloud and the Sacramento is out of this world. We'll definitely be back! read more

My wife and I stayed here during the off season ( March 2017) for our honeymoon and loved it. The restaurant is good and they were able to accommodate a vegan diet of the complimentary breakfast. Loved this hotel. Really nice country hotel with quality and class without being overdone or frilly in any way. This is a historic property that's been in McCloud for more than 100 years, recently purchased and remodeled tastefully by new owners (a couple from California). If you are going to visit Mount Shasta, most people end up in the town of Mt Shasta, which isn't bad at all - but McCloud is just 10 miles away, much quieter, and this the best hotel in the region. The restaurant is also very good, we ate there three nights in a row and enjoyed the interesting, high-quality wine list. read more

After weeks of anticipation to spend time in Tahoe over the winterbreak, the road closures sent us in a different direction - to Shasta. By now, most places were booked so we were fortunate to have found two rooms at the historic McCloud Hotel. We had a great stay! Super pet friendly, clean, comfortable and incredibly friendly and attentive staff. The breakfast that comes with the stay is great; not the usual limited continental breakfast, but a hearty breakfast, made to order (lighter breakfast options are also available). There are a couple of places within the hotel to get comfortable - by the fireside in the lobby to read and relax, or the TV/family room which felt like hanging out with family at home at watching movies on the big screen TV. And the hotel is very close to Mt. Shasta ski park - our reason for travelilng to the snow. This was much more enjoyable, and less expensive, than our original Tahoe plan. We will definitely return! read more

We loved the place. Cute and quaint and full of history. Board games sprinkled around the different sitting rooms. Very friendly staff. Rooms are good sizes, clean, but be careful noise travels in this old building. Dinner was delicious. Pot roast was one of the best meals in a while. Creamy tomato soup was also really tasty. Breakfast was OK but less impressive than dinner. Had the crustless quiche which was nothing more than scrambled eggs and leftover veggies baked in a ramequin. Would definitely return. read more

My husband and I stayed at this glorious historic country inn for four nights in early April and found it to be a haven of peace and tranquility. Just ten miles from Mount Shasta, on the main road of the small town of McCloud, yet it feels like you're in the deepest country. It reminded me of the best of New Zealand, where I grew up, grand country living where the pace is slower, the air is sweeter, the people are kinder and you quickly throw off the tensions of city life and start to relax. Cindy and Gary, the new owners, have put in a spacious new two-bedroom suite with a luxurious copper soaking tub and tasteful tile, carpet and bed linens, which looks like something out of "Vogue Living" or "House and Garden". Their complementary soaps and shampoos are excellent and, even better, you can buy them to take home or give to friends as gifts,The food was excellent, steak, steelhead trout, blissful leek soup fresh vegetables not to mention a range of decadent desserts. They also offer a split of champagne and chocolates which await you on your arrival. Our bed was super-comfortable with a view of Mount Shasta from the deck. This is country hospitality at its very best. We're already planning our return visit in the fall. We drove from Los Angeles, visiting friends in San Francisco on the way, but next time we plan to take the train from Union Station in downtown LA which stops at nearby Dunsmuir, just a ten minute ride from the hotel. Cindy will pick up guests who arrive by train, no matter what time thy arrive, so that's another relaxing option for getting to the hotel with no driving. Next time we'll take our extended family and book up several rooms. Such a perfect place! read more

We stayed two nights in a double queen (the only one) on the second floor overlooking the back garden. Pricing was reasonable. The room itself was very large and very comfortable. Beds were good. The bathroom had both a tub and shower (if you stay in this room watch out getting into and out of the shower which has a low entry - one head bang was enough for me). Bathroom amenities were nice. There is no in-room TV, which we knew. Breakfast was excellent with a lot of choices. Portions were just right. There are some self-serve choices to go with the ordered food. The lobby has games to play and lots of comfortable furniture to hang out on. Up to now, the hotel gets a 5. Here's why it's a 4. 1. I was told when I called for information before I booked that there was WiFi in the rooms. However, when I checked in, I was told there might be WiFi in the room but there would be WiFi in the lobby. WiFi in our room turned out to be like 56K dial-up. Painful at times. I like my privacy and don't want to hang out in a lobby, especially if what I want to do is at, let's say, Midnight. Since I was told one thing and came to find another, that's a problem. 2. At breakfast, over two days, I overheard four guests, including a very polite little child, ask for minor substitutions in their breakfast order, e.g. one slice of bacon and one of sausage instead of two of one or the other. Each was told, rather abruptly, no. This seemed strange and was uncomfortable to over hear. 3. Housekeeping was less than stellar. Our room was not really cleaned well. We returned after a long day to find no toilet paper and had to go down and find the owner to get us some. McCloud is a nice option to stay in as its quiet. But, there are really no restaurants (and none open on Monday or Tuesday, except Floyds Frosty which closes at 7PM). The McCloud Hotel itself serves dinner but also skips Monday and Tuesday (strange because you'd think they'd have a captive audience on those nights). You need to assume you'll be driving 20 minutes into Dunsmuir (or Shasta) - no big deal really and Dunsmuir has Great Food. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. read more

My wife and I recently attended a wedding in the quaint little town of McCloud California located at the base of Mount Shasta. I use a wheelchair so when it comes to booking a room it can be a challenge at times. When I called to make reservations I inquired about a room with accommodations. I was informed that they indeed had a room on the first floor that would fit my needs. Upon arrival Cindy (innkeeper) and her daughter were very helpful bringing our luggage in and getting us set up. I was pleased to see that the room was indeed accessible to those in a wheelchair. Some of the rooms have a theme, ours was fishing. It was nice having breakfast available as part of the stay to start our day. The people in McCloud are very friendly and easy to talk to. If you're looking for a place with all the whistles and bells, this isn't it. No TV. No phone. Perfect! Our stay for the weekend was fantastic. read more

I had the ultimate pleasure of staying in this historic place in June just as the new owners Nancy and Robert were taking charge of the reins. I could tell right away these two are professionals and know how to run such a special place along with how to treat people in a way they will remember. Their prior days owning and managing a similar place back east are immediately evident. Yes, the hotel is old - it is on the National Register and has a wonderful history of being the lodging for the bachelors that mined in the area - McCloud was a 'company town' and seeing the original structures, including homes for married employees and management, is in itself intriguing. Nancy is warm and personable and goes out of her way to assist and make your visit special. She is a darn good cook also and the 3 course breakfasts where she even makes the bread for the french toast are "events" in and of themselves. All the period furnished rooms are large and charming, many more like suites and some with jacuzzi hot tubs to make the need for TV a non-issue. Staying here is all about experiencing first hand the ambiance and comfort of a day gone by... I plan to go back in the fall sometime and guess where I will be staying? read more

This review is only for the restaurant, as we did not stay at the hotel. It is a very, very small dining room, so you need to make sure you make reservations, or you may not get in. The service, and servers were great. They obviously have had some training and take their job seriously, and made the dinner pleasant. The food was absolutely excellent. I had frest trout from the area, and it was perfect. The price was typical for a dinner for two with a bottle of wine, appetizer and dessert, somehere in the $100 range. Highly recommend, and we will definitely be back which is the best compliment you can pay any restaurant. read more

Loved staying here. Beautiful property, complimentary wine and a delicious breakfast. The restaurant was intimate and as a single person eating out, I felt really comfortable and had a terrific meal of a salad and crab cakes. The host and staff were terrific. Great wine with dinner and I hung out in the lobby and read a book, sitting in a comfy mission-style recliner. I've not stayed here (yet), but we had my son's 18th birthday celebration with family and a close friend over Labor Day weekend. Nancy, Robert and our waiter Karen served up a meal that in any context would have been spectacular; in this hotel, on this occasion, it was one for the ages. Among early courses, the tomato soup with pastry top and crab cakes were standouts, all the salads were beautiful, organic and delicious. We all (!) opted for the short ribs, if other menu items are half as good they'll still be winners. The menu is refreshingly concise (5 entrees?) and the prices very affordable, nothing was over $16 the night we visited. This is fine dining at typical Siskiyou dinner prices, and there's a fully decent wine list also. The ambience of the outdoor, trellised patio was spectacular on one of the last warm evenings of the summer. We will surely be back as the nights cool off to try the indoor dining room also. Reservations required, this is a gem and it's great to see this storied property (and the town of McCloud) get the quality establishment it deserves. Five stars! read more

This is a darling old hotel with expertly done touches seasoned travelers appreciate. It has all of the charm of an old victorian hotel, but with modern comforts such as extra soft pillows and blankets, a dark washcloth on the sink for removing makeup, plenty of close in parking, coffee and tea all day long, and best of all, the fastest wifi connection I've ever experienced in ANY hotel ANYWHERE. And it was free! The breakfast, also included, was delicious, with excellent, sincerely friendly service, and rivaled one that an expensive restaurant would offer. We're not talking plastic bins with old muffins and fruit loops. This was an elegant, full service restaurant with gluten-free and vegetarian options. The grounds are carefully manicured and beautiful, and offer many different little seating areas where guests can gather and visit. Flowers and twinkling lights make it extra special. There are several of these inside the hotel as well. This gem of an establishment is located just at the base of Mt Shasta so that each time you step outside you are gazing up at its imposing majesty. McCloud Falls, a very accessible hike for all, with three amazing waterfalls is located just about 6 miles away. At night, a quick step outside offers stargazing that will drop your jaw to the ground if you are from the city. We viewed the Milky Way right through the center of the sky. My partner and I spent a weekend here in October. We enjoyed the fall colors and the crisp evenings, yet still warm, daytime temperatures. The town had a sweet little Harvest Festival that made us feel like we were stepping back in time. We ate at the Publick House nextdoor, which was casual and delicious. It was a very relaxing and romantic weekend. However, I kept thinking how great this hotel would be to come with friends or family, because it has so many gathering spaces within, and on the grounds, and so many accessible hiking opportunities nearby. We just came back for our second stay at the McCloud Hotel, and it was just as good as we remembered it. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are spacious, and the hotel is beautifully kept. Best of all, they serve breakfast as a part of your stay, and I would say that I've had breakfast at 5 star restaurants that couldn't even compete. I would suggest you make dinner reservations as well. The roast is so good it melts in your mouth. The McCloud also has books, board games, and tea or coffee available for your consumption in their lounge area. It''s a wonderful way to spend an evening after a hike down by the river.
