I waited a while to do this review as i wanted to do it with a calm head. :) We went here on a Sunday afternoon after brunch. We sat in the booth in the window. There were initially 6 of us and one couple had to head home after a couple of hours, so then we were 4. Let me just say here and now that we are not a group of kids, we are a group in our 50's. We were there for hours spending money, buying each other drinks and having a nice time with friends. The young lady bartender seemed new and the little old man with the baldish head and the brogue (owner? manager?) seemed to be riding her on how long things were taking and this and that. He was pretty nasty to her and truthfully didnt seem particularly nice to anyone else at that. The restrooms were in the back of the place. After maybe 4 hours of being there I needed to use the ladies room again. It had gotten late and the bar was more crowded, but in the back area there is a long bench and some booths that nobody was in. No tables in the middle of the floor, just wide open. As someone was in the ladies room already I sat on the bench to wait. My friend came back to see what was taking me so long and he saw me still waiting so he took my hand and twirled me around, like making believe we were dancing. The old manager guy came running back and said "You two need to get back up in the window, stop that!! Go back up in the window" Like yelling at us. Seriously? We have spent a couple hundred bucks in you place and you are yelling at us like children? Well the ladies room opened up and I went in and when I came back out saw the man was pretty much ready to start a fight. It is now that he starts screaming "there is no dancing in here, we have no cabaret license, go back up in the window" I see now that there is a younger man (bouncer?) over his shoulder (expecting trouble?) I said to the guy that we were just joking around while I was waiting for the ladies room and there was no reason to be nasty. It is not like we were truly even dancing and had he asked nicely there would have been no issue. Well it escalated from there! The end of the long story - long is that we decided to leave and were kicked out at the same time, lol! I would never, ever go back here again. EVER. Did I say ever? Part of me wants to keep this review to myself, so I can always find myself a bar stool here. However those lucky enough to stumble across McCoys should know how to properly "McCoy"... McCoys is a no frills no gimmicks pub. They provide a world class staff, that I've played cards and rolled dice with on several occasions. Despite being absolute card sharks they always provide witty jokes and are quick to (over)serve. I'm pretty positive McCoys just never closes, I've been here until the crack of dawn, and I've walked past and seen them serve patrons as early as 10am. Guinness and Jameson flow here like the fast currents of the Amazon River. After a long weeks work, I'm not sure if there's a better destination in Manhattan on a Friday at 5. read more

Coke head haven after 7. Bartenders leave customers to wait to order while they look at you and wait for you to leave all while they do shots behind the bar. The smell is worse than a overworked porta potty in-the heat. The Guinness is disgusting and improperly poured, also they charge to much for drinks and will cheat you on the bill. To top it off cockroaches are everywhere competing with the flies for territory even on your drinking glasses. You would be better off buying a beer off a homeless person, it will be cheaper, cleaner, and much more safe than this drug den described as a Irish pub. read more

McCoy's had me shortly after we sat at the corner spot of the bar, and my friend asked the bartender to explain the difference between scotch and whiskey. He shook his head and then answered: "I don't make the liquor, I just drink it." And then he poured her another scotch. Classic answer in a classic old NYC bar. If friendly albeit smart-ass service wasn't enough, McCoy's showcases a vintage collection of football pennants that could've been swiped right from my childhood bedroom. Old school. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a framed photo of Yankees legend Don Mattingly hanging by the bar -- complete with Donny Baseball's porn 'stache from the late 80s. Sweet! My friends and I came here last Friday and had a great time. We initially weren't planning on drinking as much as we did, but the atmosphere and bartender were awesome! The bartender was extremely attentive and friendly. Once any of our beers were empty, he'd pop up asking what's next? I recommend either of the McCoy brews. They brew their own lager and red ale. The Guinness is also one of the best tasting pours I've had. The only downside is that the place is kind of narrow. My boyfriend who is a big, built guy kept getting bumped into while we sat at the bar by other patrons who did not apologize. And because it's so narrow, it gets pretty loud. We found ourselves having to almost scream for us to hear each other. read more

Small Dive Bar in Hell's Kitchen. Very Small. Has a medium length bar with enough space for barstools and a thin walkway behind it, a few booths in the back and that's about it. The window booth is probably the best seat in the house. Place smells like any good dive-bar should: A layer of Mr. Clean over years of spilled beer . Cheap drinks are a plus, but I only ordered beer. Despite being an "Irish" dive bar, the Guinness I ordered came in a pint glass, as did the Black and Tan. The bartender definitely gave it time to settle, but messed up the head ratio. I probably would not go back here if in the area... there is this pretty cool Bacon Bar Gastropub a few doors down. read more

Needed a burger... saw an irish pub... First of all this bar looks way to clean from the outside So i was a little skeptical walking in. I sat at the bar and they had a limited menu with about 6 items on it. there were a few fly's that kept landing on the bar making me feel a little better about the super clean look. I order the "real mccoy" from the menu well first of all because its named after the place. The description read something like a two patties burger with triple the amount of cheddar cheese and l-t-o , onion rings and fries. For a steep price of 15 dollars. OK considering the single burger was a 7 once I'm thinking shit this thing is ginormous. BARTENDER CALLS A DIFFERENT RESTAURANT FOR DELIVERY OF THE FOOD.... The burger comes. still in the delivery tinfoil. two over cooked pattties on a dinky ass bun and frozen style zig zag fries. And the amount of cheese on this burger was barley enough to even call it a cheeseburger... let alone a cheese burger with 3 times the amount of cheese. I was hoping that at least if the burger wasnt good i would be eating somwhat of a cheese melt sandwich.... Food Fail. read more

If you have seen on Irish Pub, you may have seen them all. And this one is no different. Yes, at least this one has a few flat screen TVs to watch football on Sundays, but so do a number of other Irish pubs that I find more appealing. Take Landowne Road for example on 10th Avenue. And the drinks? A bit subpar (yes, even for an Irish pub). I had a bloody Mary, and it was, well...a bit bland. I had the bartender put extra tabasco sauce on the second one to at least give it a bit more kick. Having tasted the drinks, I passed on the food. I will stick to other Irish pubs where I think are worth more my while! read more

Really fun little irish pub if you ever find yourself aaaalll the way on the west side. I recommend for pregaming Terminal 5 shows. Most notable is the music they play: all the best classics. Fantastic dive bar in Hell's Kitchen. Their happy hour specials are great ($5 for well, select draft, and shots). I was there on a bender the other day and spent $11 after 4 hours. A lot of their drafts are brewed specifically for them, my favorite is the spiced ale. The bartenders are nice and if you get there early there is no one there. Also, they play fantastic music. I tried the Irish Cider here and it was actually really refreshing after walking around the city all day long. They have this tradition where if you finish an entire bottle of Jameson while you're there you can sign the bottle and add it to their showcase along the walls, seems pretty cool although we didn't attempt this feat during our bar hopping Saturday afternoon. Might come back with a bigger group and give it a try though. The service was great, bartender was really sweet and it seemed to have a really locals only kind of vibe which is nice when you just want to relax watch some sports and have a good time. If you're looking for a more laidback authentic Irish bar, I'd definitely recommend this spot. read more

Though McCoy's is probably a fine place to come get a beer, the fact that it was the only place with any room to sit down on a Friday night was probably my first clue that this isn't a date spot. It's an old-man's Irish dive bar, which is fine, but there's no real reason to come here over any of the other local Irish-type dive bars (Landsdowne Road, for instance). They have a limited menu of food, which actually comes from another restaurant down the road, though I have no idea if you can order from another restaurant and have it delivered. The front area has a bar, and bar seats, and the back has some booths where you can order beers and food from the aforementioned mystery restaurant down the block. Also? Some tv's line the walls, and there's a small booth where you can fit three or four people right in the front if you want to do some people watching while you drink your beers. Liquor selection is fairly standard, nothing more exciting than Knob Creek in the bourbon department. If you want a single beer, or can't find anywhere with a place to sit down on a weekend night, McCoy's is fine. But that's about the only time I'd stop in. read more

This place is literally a hole in the wall joint...so of course, I love it. $4 McCoys, Yuengling, and something else on a Sunday afternoon? Yes, please. Also, $3 Fuzzy Leprechauns, Woo Woo, and Kamikaze shots. Other good happy hours during the week, too. There's a great little table for 4 at the front for people watching (though there's a sign in the middle). when everybody else went to Hiro, a few of us opted to come here instead because we were famished. It's basically an Irish bar, and we all know how great Irish bars are, don't we? I don't know what it is about Irish bars, but they always make really good burgers. And they always have pretty good jukeboxes. What I loved about McCoy's is that the burger was pretty good, not great. But I was so hungry it tasted like a filet mignon topped with cheese and catsup. But the best part was the jukebox itself. Now, we're not talking about one of those internet jukeboxes. We're talking the ones with actual CD's in it. I played some Dylan, some Tom Waits, some Stones, even some U2, you know music perfect for an Irish bar. How cool was my playlist? Definitely a dive bar, in any respect of the word. However, being in a neighborhood where every bar must have lights and cutesy decor, this place is actually kind of refreshing. Cheap drinks, nice bartender, not actually too dirty or gross- just dark, which is sometimes just what you need. The only reason I don't come here is because of the clientele. My friend and I came here once and ended up having a really long/drunken/awkward night with some of the regulars and now I can't even walk in without re-living and praying that they won't be there. If none of this happened to you, though, and you're looking for a dive in HK, this is a good one. read more

McCoy's is a standard dive bar with a long, wooden counter packed with Hell's Kitchen-ites. The neighborhood vibe really makes you feel right at home. The bartender is also an obvious fixture in the pub, because when asked about the current location of some specific frequent visitors, we received a response of, "Oh, they are out of town for the weekend." I have rarely seen such a show of management-patron commitment. The bartender also inducted me into the mix by turning down my request for common Absolut with a simple, "We do not have Absolut, but let me give you Grey Goose instead." First of all, why would I ever decline such an upgrade?! Secondly, I later scanned the bottle display, and my eyes settled on Absolut's signature clear bullet with its blue lettering. My chest swelled with gratitude at the kind gesture, and I felt like I had been inducted into a special insiders' club. Though the space was fairly narrow, the stools were mainly empty on this Memorial Day Weekend Sunday evening, so I was able to spread out and relax. Sport games played on television sets around us and a few of the rear tables were occupied by small groups of friends. All in all, my McCoy's experience was low-key and enjoyable. read more

It's not McHale's. It does have excellent burgers. When my sainted Irish grandmoother took me home to Drogheda, we stopped in a lot of pubs. And although McCoy's doesn't smell of the peat, it really did feel kinda authentically Irish (until the flatscreen TVs went in). Bar in front, booths out back. The booths aren't oblong as in most American restaurants. The sides of the booth spread wide, barely separating one party from the next as if on Sundays every family in town was expected to congregate there after mass and exchange local news. Undersized tables almost like footstools. Irish-ish. Bartender sometimes draws a little shamrock in the head of your Guiness. I've tried to tell people the burgers are excellent, but most people were already mesmerized by McHale's. Well, no more McHale's. Many others were already mesmerized by Island Burger on the same block as McCoy's. Fine, if you enjoy the decor and the ambience at Island Burger. I buddy over on chowhound tried to convince me McCoy's phones its burger orders over to Island, and passes them off to customers as McCoy's own. I'm pretty sure that's a lie -- but so what? To eat an Island Burger in an Irish pub? Sounds good to me! Get's a little bit sporty and yuppie, but hi ho. read more

Pleasantly surprised at this place. Its a little dive bar in the middle of hells kitchen but kinda cozy. The bartender was a friendly cool guy. And it seems like no one can make a true cocktail anymore unless you go to some specialty place and pay a lot... I realize its trendy now to get organic cucumber infused fermented watermelon juice or some crap and pass it off as a cocktail. Still its maddening when I order a drink like a stinger or rusty nail and the bartender asks me either what is that? or what's in that? Well not this place. They know their drinks, plus they were decently priced for this area, $8 for pretty strong drink...yup the only thing out of a bartenders mouth when I order something should be "yes sir/ma'am." read more

This is your basic dive bar open from early morning to early morning. Narrow, dark with tables in the back. I don't believe they serve food...but I have seen people order in and have it delivered. There's really nothing special about McCoys. It is a pretty non-descript Irish pub in Midtown West with a pretty ordinary beer list, but yet I gotta say I kinda liked it in there! Maybe it was that someone pumped enough money into the jukebox so that the Clash was playing for an hour straight. Maybe it was that even though the Clash was playing for an hour, I had no problem hearing my buddy speak Maybe it was that while 9th Ave was packed with people, most of the tables in McCoys were open. Maybe it was that for a Midtown establishment, the bartender was totally laid back and not pretentious. Maybe the stars were just in a alignment and it was a combination of all these things. I really don't know. But, I'd totally hang at McCoy's again. It's a great place for a chill night to catch up with a friend... read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars because I had an exorbitant amount of fun here. We randomly walked in, just looking for an easy place to get a drink and then somehow that turned into completing the Jameson bottle challenge. Amazing. Jameson bottle challenge: the bartender (hopefully Adam, he's love) opens up a new bottle of Jameson for you and friends and if you finish the bottle you get to decorate it with Sharpies and it goes on display at the bar. We had SO much fun making new friends who agreed to buy from our bottle and Adam even found this weird jar of pickles for us so we could do picklebacks. Such a funny experience. It's just a tiny, unassuming pub but it doesn't have that douchey-midtown-Irish-bar feel which is wonderful. Awesome, awesome little pub. I've walked by McCoy's a thousand times but until I ducked in after getting caught in that ultra-violent electrical storm that decimated Central Park last week I never entered. This is the most authentic Irish/Scottish dive I've ever set foot in in Manhattan--cue the surly, painfully hung-over looking bartender who could pour a perfect Guinness from a coma, the most svelte female at 10 stone plus but you'll try and take her home if you get one more beer in you, the poker game in the back and belligerent brogue up front. Was a bit disappointed by the fact that She had to order three different beers they had on tap until they finally had one in stock. Then when checking the bill after the night was done I noticed I was over charged by a beer. I wont complain too much but that is just sloppy on both the bartender and my part. I stopped in here for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. The female bartender was really drunk. I like dive bars but I expect the staff to be more sober than me, especially at 5 pm. I set the bar pretty low, so a blind drunk bar tender generally doesn't bother me enough to make me leave. I left because she got into a shouting match with some guy who walked in and apparently tried to use the bathroom without buying a drink. It was so heated that I thought they were going to fight. She picked up the phone to call the police on him, but she escalated the whole thing. It was a sad shameful scene. This dive bar is not for the faint of heart. The staff needs to sober up and seek professional help. read more
