No live person taking orders (?) A little late review - but I was in Kealakekua and decided to make a quick stop at this McD for a drink and snack. Parked the car, walked in ... and ... did not see the usual cash register and person taking orders! Tried waiting around for a couple of minutes, but nobody came up to the counter. Wow! They have those kiosks where you can enter your order, swipe your credit card, and then you see your order number on one of those progress screens, and the staff gives you your order. Sheesh - talk about trying to automate everything, cut down on labor to increase the bottom line! While it was not much of a problem for me, I wonder what happens when someone wants to use cash? Don't even waste your time, money, and health with this place. Ordered online through the app around 7:30pm arrived there to see the drive thru closed and doors locked, the lights were still on and I seen people in there looking like they were closing up and cleaning. There's no signs anywhere saying they were closed, an employee finally showed up to announce they were closed. Again to no explanation as why they closed early, and told me they canceled my order. I got no notification of that btw, I asked if I'm getting refunded and the employee looked puzzled and says somehow I will. I left enraged and with a starved family and no food. I can't even understand how irresponsible this place is. I constantly see workers not being clean or sanitary with the food, they never get our orders right, customer service from the evening employees are rude and slow, they also never ever give you napkins or sauces with your meals. Appearing to be one of the older McDonald's in the area, this one has spectacular views of the Pacific if you dine in the parking lot. The food has some Island favorites, such as Saimin or Portuguese sausage with rice and eggs. I really have not had this type of food for over 20 years, and appreciated the taste of this breakfast favorite, which reminds me of the Hawaiian spirit. Stopped by this McDonald's location on our way to the volcano national park. IT IS OPEN and renovated! The location is perfect. The restaurant is on the smaller side but it seems newly renovated. They even had FRESH flower arrangements! The staff were very nice and accommodating. read more

Yesterday I came to this McDonalds at 7:30pm and placed an order for 4 mcChickens a ten peice McNugget meal and a few other menu items including 3 large fries. We left and had a long drive home to feed our hungry toddlers. And when we got home, we checked our order and it was missing all the fries. The next day we went back to ask if we could have our order fixed and we were told there is no way to fix it because their systems fully reset every day. The manager Evan told us there is no way to help us and never even apologized for the inconvenience. If you go to this McDonalds always check your order and don't expect friendly service if something is wrong! read more

Not sure how this McDonald's slipped through the cracks in terms of style, but it looks more like somebody's bungalow that got converted. Parking is available in front. The driveway in is a bit on the steep side though. The kitchen has all the fixings like any other location. I tried the Portuguese Sausage breakfast. It tastes a bit like garlic sausage, but tastier. If I could give less than one star I would. This specific McDonalds has grown increasingly worse each time I come here I will no longer be a patron of this establishment. The manager on duty is rude to the employees as well as customers. The other employees are reflecting that attitude toward the customers as well. I've seen racism and insensitivity to handicapped people as well. The food comes burnt and ill prepared it's no wonder there are so few employees with the way this establishment is run internally I would walk out too. I will be filing a formal complaint. Yikes, avoid this location if possible. Understaffed during the peak of lunch hour, had one unmotivated dude behind the register with about 10 people in line. Between orders, he kept checking his cell phone. Meanwhile one worker (i'm guessing maybe the manger) was hustling to try to get orders out, while one very sloth-like female employee kept wandering back and forth between the counter and dining area. Finally, the only worker who was actually doing anything (again, i think she was manager) yelled at her to get out of the way and go to the dining room and clean it. She slowly moved to the dining room, where she stood, with a broom in her hand staring at patrons. When they'd leave, she'd swoop in (not really, more like crept) to clean under the table. It took me 15 minutes to get my fries & tea (from the time I entered the restaurant ). Fast food? I think not! This location needs help. read more

I hate this place for the crazy girl that works the drive-through. On 4/16 around 10am for breakfast on our way to Kealakekua Bay park but they were already serving lunch. Asked for a sprite with no ice but the crazy drive thru girl couldn't even do that right. Asked again for no ice and she gave me attitude and looked at me like I was messing with her. 3.5 stars. Came here for breakfast and got the spam, eggs, rice, and Portuguese sausage and a few sausage Mcgriddles. As someone not from Hawaii, the spam, eggs, and rice was not something that you can't get really anywhere else, so I had to try them - it was SO good. I really liked the combination of everything and I thought it all went together really well. The spam was surprisingly good and the sausage was excellent (for McDonald's standards). The McGriddles were standard (and delicious), but the fact this McDonalds offered something unique (and it was delicious) made this a really good experience (as a tourist). read more

Read a lot of negative reviews. However, we had a pleasant experience. The guy at the drive thru was very patient and answer all my weird questions and even gave me tips. We ordered a medium coffee. It's real Kona Coffee. I was pleasantly surprised. Since McDonald coffee normally tastes water down. Their sausage egg mc muffin was fresh. The English muffin was soft and lightly toasted in the appropriate areas. The sausage patty was plump and juicy, unlike where you would normally get a dried up piece. The medium coke was a little over filled with ice. Spam, eggs, and rice was nothing out of the ordinary. I can make this stuff at home and it would taste the same. Only complaint is that this is hawaii after all and you are serving Asian folks. Carry siracha or any form of hot sauce would have been nice. read more

We stopped by here on our way to Ka Lae for a lunch and for haupia pie. We were a little disappointed about the lack of haupia pies, but we did get to try their peach mango pies and macademia nut iced coffee. The pies authentically tasted like mangoes, and the coffee was a little bland. If you're heading to the south end of the island, be sure to eat before you go. Came here for a fast dinner pick up and thinking that it was you know gonna be "quick" but it unfortunately it wasn't waited 10 minutes just to order our food mind you it wasn't busy i was the only one waiting in line while there was a guy also waiting for a ice cream which took them almost 10 minutes for them to make! Because they were to busy joking around and laughing that customer was pretty upset as well. I got to stay in my car throughout the whole process of getting my amazing meal, which consisted of : a double layer of sear-sizzled 100% pure beef mingled with special sauce on a sesame seed bun and topped with melty American cheese, crisp lettuce, minced onions and tangy pickles. Absolute heaven! Once again McDonald's has set the bar for all other contenders. And, serves as a beacon for the local burger establishments as they grope blindly in the dark trying to keep up.
